Seafood lover here! I have to admit that the Portuguese seafood is the best it feels like I'm in paradise while I'm eating 😅 just love Portugal with all my heart, well done Mark you're a star.
Stayed in the North of Portugal for a while (Viana Do Castello) back in 2016-2017, and every day I had fresh sea food. The best in the world. Portuguese people are very nice as well.
I've been in Portugal twice! The food is to die for! My girlfriend is from Portugal, she has some explanaining to do as she haven't taken me to the seafood mountain 😂
Actually in Portugal we're not that much of seafood lovers 😅 There's the occasional sardine, tuna, shrimp and lobster but those things... Require WORK to eat them. You have to dodge the occasional bone and break carapace to get to the meat.... And the protein feel-full ratio is not that beneficial. Soooo yeah... Meat gets the throne. Seafood is light food you know... It's understandable that your girlfriend hasn't mentioned you this... We just don't think too much of it. This is like "Food tourism" in a way... They're looking for specific cultural things that the country has a specialty in it. For sure... You won't eat good seafood like this in other countries, that's GRANTED. If you want a "seafood rollercoaster"... Yup, Portugal is the place
@@Trip4man Thats not really true, at least not in the regions closest to the coast. Shrimp, mussels and clams are always present as starters in any event here. @LshowKnows from what I've seen and eaten, it's basically 70% seafood in Porto area and Lisbon atleast. And it was delicious 🤌🤌 But I totally fell in love pastel de nata ♥️ I ate so much of it, I embarrassed my fiancé 😂. My favourite pastel spot is in Porto, it's called Manteigaria😍

Sorry to the people of Japan, they are also great, but they didn't get there, just barely...

Both Spain and Portugal are highly underrated for food. Their seafood is outstanding. Even their canned seafood is much higher quality than what you get in America.
I am Portuguese and lived in Spain for a long time before coming back. Although you are correct in both of them being underrated, I think they are very different cuisines. My feeling is that on high end cuisine the Spaniards have us beat since the times of El Bulli. They consistently have multiple restaurants in the top 10 or 20 of the world because their expert chefs are REALLY good and they have some incredible ingredients. But for day to day, traditional food the chance of you walking in a restaurant and feeling really happy with what you are eating is higher in Portugal, and my wife (who is russian) pointed out a good reason for it. See I (and a huge percentage of Portuguese including men) can cook 95% of what I eat in a Portuguese restaurant, of course not to the same level of expertise, but quite approximately, so when I go out and ask for something that I know I can eat, I have a clear reference of what things are supposed to taste like or feel, and that puts some pressure on the cooks to be better at what they do. I have travelled quite a bit and that experience of just walking in a random restaurant or tasca and always feeling welcomed and well served only happened to me in one other place, Italy.. Sorry for the long reply.

Great video again Mark. We grill a dourada on charcoal almost every second weekend, so I am very used to the wonderful taste of grilled fish, but the way the sardines taste in Portugal is just mesmerising so I don't make those at home, and enjoy them only when I'm back in Portugal. And it is always worth the wait. But people, apart from the plates that Mark ate, which all had hefty price tags, the most wonderful thing about Portugal in general is, that you can go into almost any restaurant and have a fresh fish option every day.
