Porto is arguably the most underrated city in Europe. Anyone who hasn't visited is missing out.
And keep it that way, there is so much confusion at the city center, it's unbelievable.

Porto is a gem of a place, the architecture, the food, the wines and especially the people! There is nothing not to like about any of it.
We just visited Porto & can attest that it is charming !! Have dinner at VINUM at the Grahams Port warehouse in Gaia, on the other side of the Douro river. The nighttime view on Porto is magnificent and will enhance an excellent meal. 👍

They let dogs poo all over the pavement without penalty and then because they allow bikes to ride on the pavement there are trails of poo everywhere. Not to mention the culture of spitting in public being acceptable. I expect u never lived there.

Portuguese people are so humble - my husband is from Portugal - you get there portions double of the size what you get in London and less than half of what you pay here - cant wait to go back in 2024

Fish in Portugal is fantastic and is cooked in the simplest way, with just salt, charcoal and olive oil on the plate. So good

What do you mean olive oil? I am Portuguese and almost never put olive oil in fish. Many fishes are oily enough, they can´t be overcooked though. Salt is enough

There is 3 things Porto people have mastered. 1st is cooking, 2nd is drinking, and the 3th is having the most fun possible.
First touristical destination for Galicians. We love Porto so much that we sometimes say “Galician most important city” 😍. (Joking). So adorable.

I grew up watching Jamie Oliver’s cooking shows with my grandma. It’s one of my most cherished memories. She didn’t live long enough to see him go to her hometown and drink wine with her son’s neighbour ( the port winemaker lives in our building and has been a good family friend for many years now ) !
But man, she would have loved it ! Thank you Jamie !

Fish in Portugal is exceptional, and the people are a delight. I was in Lisboa in 1983 and just chatting to some guys fishing in the Tagus with rods close to Cais do Sodré station. They sent me home with a bag full of fish to cook in the Youth Hostel and we feasted that night. I later went up to Porto, but I think most of my refreshments were beer, but I had a fantastic time. That was 40 years ago, but I expect not a lot has changed (apart from getting a lot more expensive than it was in 1983).
Everything's changed my friend. For better in many ways I think

Jamie, am Anglo-Portuguese, my family is from Porto, very much like the places you visited. Pity this was such a rushed visit. Take the kids sometime, check otu the river beaches, there is really nothing like it, avoid August. Perhaps drive inland, Douro, Minho, Marao, Amarante, you will be in heaven, it is uniquely beautiful - because, you have not seen anything seen yet X:)
Love these 24 hour whistle stops. Especially the characters of the city that you meet and of course the food. Love you Jamie.

Jamie, if you're ever back in Porto, check out my favourite restaurant, A Cozinha do Manel on Rua do Heroismo. Nothing flashy or fussy, just great, authentic Portuguese food in a traditional setting. The duck, veal, venison and blood sausage are sensational. Oh, and the goat.

I am so upset I did not know this was coming... I live in Porto and would of loved to recommend some top spots for local dishes!!! Cheers and glad you liked my adopted city!!! ☺ ☺ Also, The Majestic Cafe is a treasure inside and out and is one of the oldest coffee shops in the country. I have only been once but fell in 😍 😍

Pata-roxa is known as morgay in Cornwall, spotted dog-shark everywhere else. Lovely in a fish stew.
I'm quite glad you're spreading the word about my hometown. It's a city from about 200 B.C.! It's so rich in culinary diversity, traditions, architecture. Its first name was "Portus Cale" (warm harbor), which gave our country the name Portugal. You went to some of my favorite places. To me, there's nothing like eating fish in Afurada. People are very friendly, genuine. It's such a shame Spain takes all the credit for our best products. It's about time we get our incredibly dishes and tourist sites out there. Had I known you were coming here, and I would have provided you with some family warm welcome and meals, full of TLC.

Porto is one of the most underrated cities in Europe, Shame Jamie didn't have time to take a little trip up the Douro river, its just such a beautiful place the north of Portugal .
