- Philmont Scout Ranch is located just outside of Cimarron, New Mexico. To say the two are connected is really an understatement. Cimarron provides housing for Philmont employees and places to shop and dine for both the staff and our annual pilgrimage of Scouts and Scouters going on a backcountry trek or attending a conference at the Philmont Training Center. Many former Philmont staff members have retired in Cimarron, and for many, Cimarron represents the gateway to a lifetime of memories that formed at Philmont when they were young. Philmont and Cimarron also share in the benevolence of Waite and Genevieve Phillips, with each receiving gifts from the family that are still impacting people today.
One of those memories might be the July Fourth Rodeo hosted by the Cimarron Maverick Club for the last 101 years. The Maverick Club and Philmont were tied together 15 years before the Phillips family donated their New Mexico ranchland and home to the Boy Scouts of America. See how this connection began and how it endures today through a peek at a couple of historic rodeo programs in the Philmont Collection.
