Artifact of the Week 20240830 - Gettysburg Badge
In 1913, the Boy Scouts of America provided community service for three significant events. On March 3rd, Scouts in Washington DC provided crowd control and rendered First Aid during the Woman Suffrage March. The next day, March 4th, the Scouts continued these activities in support of the inauguration of Woodrow Wilson as President of the United States.
The performance of the Boy Scouts at these events left a mark on those who saw the Scouts in action. In July, Scouts in the Philadelphia area were called upon to help support quite possibly the largest reunion in history to recognize the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The Pennsylvania Reunion Commission recognized the involv...

This week, Trevor and Tucker tell us about the Cimarron & Northwestern Railway's role in other industries in the Cimarron and Philmont area. They also explain why a business that many perceive as a small operation in the larger scheme of things is significant in its contribution to the development of the Western United States. Finally, we get to learn how research can not only help tell one sto...

In the Philmont Collection being held at the National Scouting Museum, we have several artifacts that represent the history of logging and railroading here in Colfax County. These items help tell the story of the Cimarron and Northwestern Railway Company and the Continental Tie and Lumber Company and their significance to the history of Cimarron and Philmont. Three former Philmont Staff members...
Artifact of the Week 20240809 - Billy Clark Story
Просмотров 10321 день назад
For members of the Order of the Arrow, the name Billy Clark is synonymous with Cheerful Service. But outside of the bedpan story, very little was known about this unassuming Scout from Troop 1 in Philadelphia that E. Urner Goodman believed envisioned Cheerful Service as he founded the OA. Then, in 2020, OA historian Bill Topkis got a break and, through a series of events, was able to connect wi...

For more than 30 years, the history of the Order of the Arrow has been on display during the National OA Conference. In 2012, the exhibits got an upgrade and became the Goodman-Edson Observation or GEO. If you aren’t familiar with the GEO, don’t feel bad, many Scouts and Scouters are not. This week, we talk with Bradley Taylor and Karsten Smith to learn about the history of the GEO, how it all ...
Artifact of the Week 20240719 reedit - Wood Carving
Просмотров 107Месяц назад
There is a ritual that I think nearly every Scout since day one of Scouting America has probably experienced. It is the right of passage that comes from cutting a finger trying to complete the Wood Carving Merit Badge. For me, wood carving was an elusive goal. Admittedly, I don’t have the patience to master the skills necessary to turn a block of wood into something amazing. But there are a num...

The idea of Scouting being able to bring people from all over the world closer to one another and to pursue enduring peace has been at the heart of the movement since Baden-Powell started to bring his plans to life in 1907. While B-P may have felt he failed in delivering on that goal, the fact is that Scouting can make a difference every day. This week, we will learn about a couple of times whe...

When James E. West was hired as the Executive Secretary of the Boy Scouts of America, he was focused on one thing: developing a program to build character, physical fitness, and citizenship in boys ages 12-15. In his mind, this was the prime age for influencing a young mind and shaping the boy into the man American Society needed. Others felt the BSA needed to develop a program to start earlier...

Philmont Scout Ranch is located just outside of Cimarron, New Mexico. To say the two are connected is really an understatement. Cimarron provides housing for Philmont employees and places to shop and dine for both the staff and our annual pilgrimage of Scouts and Scouters going on a backcountry trek or attending a conference at the Philmont Training Center. Many former Philmont staff members ha...

When Baden-Powell returned to England after the Siege at Mafeking, he was surprised to see his training manual, Aids to Scouting, was being bought and used by kids and youth-related groups to learn about self-reliance, discipline, woodcraft, and more. Because the manual was written to help prepare adult men to be better soldiers in the British Army, B-P saw its lessons as valuable, but they nee...
Artifact of the Week 20240621 - Boys' Life Story

We recently wrote an article for the International Scouting Collectors Association on the common errors repeated in telling the story of the origin of Boys’Life Magazine and how it was acquired by the BSA in the summer of 1912. As a courtesy to their readers, we agreed to allow their June 2024 publication to be released before we cover the topic as part of our series here. However, it wouldn’t ...
Artifact of the Week 20240614 - Adult Female Leaders

There is no doubt that without adult female leaders, Scouting America wouldn’t survive today. From humble beginnings as unregistered Den Mothers assisting Den Chiefs with Cub Scout Dens to leading Packs, Troops, Crews, and Ships. From serving on District, Council, and National Committees and contributing to Scouting America as the National Commissioner, women have always been a part of the succ...

So hopefully, the technical issues are behind us. This week, we are looking at the history of female youth members of Scouting America. From the opening of Exploring in 1969 to the first female members of Scouts BSA in 2019, girls and young ladies have made significant contributions to the programs and units they have joined. In addition to learning about the history of their membership, we wil...

Service to others has been a hallmark of Scouting America since its founding in 1910. Every week, Scouts and Scouters are reminded of this as they recite the Scout Oath. During The First World War, a young Navy Ensign was assigned to handle courts-martial for young sailors who found themselves in trouble while on liberty call or leave. This troubled the Naval Officer and he vowed that when he l...
