    • @Colaman112
      @Colaman112 3 года назад +32

      Not a third, it is said that phoenix feathers are the rarest wand core, so there would be less phoenix wands than other types. But all of the ones that do exist would in fact be brothers if they used the same phoenix.

    • @leefontaine2934
      @leefontaine2934 3 года назад +19

      Phoenix wands are supposed to be very picky in choosing the wizard, so there probably isn't many of them in circulation. Plus the unique effect of twin wands not working properly only applies if the wands cast spells simultaneously against each other. This could also mean that many wands of other cores also have brothers.

    • @Amcsae
      @Amcsae 3 года назад +40

      I wonder if the feathers have to be from the same incarnation to be "brothers." That would significantly cut down on the matches as well.
      I. E., if your core feather if from the phoenix's 1,745th lifetime, and your opponent's core feather came from the same phoenix but 3 regenerations later in the 1,748th 'life', maybe they wouldn't match up.
      I was always confused about the twin core thing anyway, as being rare... how many hairs are in a single unicorn tail? Half of Hogwarts could have matching cores!

      The only known instances of the Twin cores phenomenon Harry/Voldemort in the Graveyard duel and the Boot brothers in their fight against Gormlaith.
      In both cases the concerned parties have extremely close ties, The Boots are brothers fighting alongside each other so their wands magnified each other.
      Whereas Harry and Voldemort by that time share Lilly's protective charm and part of Voldemort's soul. They were fighting against each other so their wands did likewise.

    Okay, here's the thing: if it was Phoenix ash, they wouldn't need to keep that fact secret. Having your own Phoenix is really rare, and there's probably some alchemical weirdness that has to happen , which their infrastructure would allow them to make most cheaply. I think that the key is how fast the fire consumes the user.
    The fire doesn't hurt the user, which to me indicates some protective or healing magic. Easy enough, if you have a phoenix, you have their tears. Treat the ashes with the tears and some complex spells to enhance the particular effects of those ingredients, and you're good - except you just have inter ash at this point. You ever try to light ashes on fire? It's not easy. They need to add an ingredient that can burn, instantly, in any condition. This is the big secret. And this is why the flames are green, when phoenix flames are orange. They aren't hiding the ingredient just from competition. They're hiding it from the law - specifically from the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office. They're using muggle-made firestarters! That's how the flame pops up so fast, why it's green, where most of the sheer mass of the powder comes from *and* why Arthur was able to get the Dursleys house hooked up to the network! Think of it - Arthur looks and seems like a spineless simpleton, but he readily stands up to bullies like the Malfoys and he's definitely a lot smarter than he seems. Doubtless he would have found out about firestarters and wondered about them. Maybe he lit one, maybe with some of the plastic packaging still on it, and saw the various colors of flame? Maybe he put two and two together? Maybe he happened to know of some aspects of magic that would enhance the effectiveness of muggle chemical products, through some of his investigations? Maybe he showed up at the Floo Network Authority's office and asked to speak to their liason to Floo-Pow. Maybe he confronted them with this evidence. Maybe he said something like, "now, I'd hate for this kind of thing to get out - it'd throw half of the magical world into chaos! But I have personal responsibilities, you know. And if you could help those along, I could much more easily keep this quiet. You know, for the good of the magical world."

      As far as the ministry being inept I imagine Fred and George were just referring to the average employer who works in desk duty, I feel like the wizards who work in magical law enforcement on active duty would’ve been highly proficient, but again I doubt anyone else of the time besides Voldemort (and possibly Dumbledore) would’ve realistically been capable of performing such a magical feat. Sirius was able to use face-floo transport, bcoz my theory is that Dumbledore had all the fireplaces in Hogwarts connected to the OOTP headquarters.

Even an electron microscope, that they wouldn't have because they need electricity and it's not like the magic community is very acquainted with its use, I don't think it would help in this case. More likely they would need something like a mass spectrometer and I'm pretty confident they don't have one of those either. And in any case, you would need to know the composition of phoenix ashes first, so you can compare... I'm thinking something like a potion would be a better option here. But yeah, Phoenix ash is probably the key ingredient in the Floo-Powder recipe but not the whole thing, it’s most likely that a little goes a *long* way.
    It could even be that Floo-Pow has contracts with practically all the magic-folk who have ownership of phoenixes in the UK and/or Europe to provide the phoenix ash, which is otherwise useless without the rest of the recipe, with compensation of course.
    After all, there has to be a decent number of Phoenixes to provide their feathers as wand cores so it stands to reason that there are enough to provide ash for floo-powder, if the recipe only requires small amounts for a large batch.

    The Phoenix theory for floo adds up, but not for olivander. He works with three core types specifically and one is Phoenix feather. Also we know that a Phoenix doesn't usually give more than one feather. So there has to be a huge amount of untamed Phoenixs running around.
    Or it's a dark answer, they have a Phoenix caged in their offices and they use avada kadavera on it to force it to produce ashes. And when a Phoenix is reborn is it still technically the same Phoenix or has it's mentality changed somewhat making it able to gift another feather after each molting.

Since Dumbledore used the phoenix itself to teleport and didn't get burnt, I'd say the phoenix flames are already cool enough to travel. However you do have a point since it has to also react with a preexisting flame.

    I'm not sure if I just didn't catch you say it or if anyone else said it yet, but your theory could also lead to Olivanders owning Floo-Pow. Since no one answers their door, that could mean they're off doing more important things. Like, maybe making wands. And since they'd only just need to be collecting the ashes, they could totally just have a simple charm to do that for them while they're doing whatever else.

  • @trevorritzke2099
    @trevorritzke2099 3 года назад +5

    I mean, wouldn’t there be way more brother wands if Olivander had his own Phoenix? I mean, with the Unicorn tail hair, Olivander actually says that he goes out and grabs them himself, giving a story of him almost getting kicked to death by one. These creatures love purity and distrust men almost to a fault, especially after they are not virgins and whatever you can say about Olivander, he is undeniably a creepy old man and I can not picture him being pure. The fact that he can get the unicorn hair himself more likely means that he goes out into the wild and harvests all the ingredients for his wands now while I do believe that the floo powder has at least some Phoenix ash in it, what would make more sense is that Olivander and the “Floo Pow” people know where Phoenix’s nest. A secret area few know about and they go there to collect either the tail feathers or the ash.

    • @rachelhamm19
      @rachelhamm19 3 года назад +5

      I think it's likely the Floo Pow company owns several phoenixes and Ollivander has some sort of deal with them for feathers

  • @noodles669
    @noodles669 10 месяцев назад +1

    But i dont think Olivander has a phoenix, for one thing every single phoenix core wand would be made from the same phoenix, making all of them twin cores, which is a pretty rare thing, and we have seen olivander get phoenix cores from other sources, like fawkes

    Floo Pow and Ollivander 's obviously have access to "Phoenix Nest". Where they can collect ashes, tears and feathers for the various kinds of uses that magical people have.
    Other ingredients are also included in making floo powder.
    There are different types of phoenixes too, so maybe the by-products of the different types create different effects.

      He isn't complaining that it isn't decimal, but that the numbers used in the system (17 and 39) are really weird. Something like 12 (as in the number of inches in a foot), on the other hand, would work nicely because, unlike a decimal-based system, it can be easily divided into thirds.

    You need to do one on the two way mirror in the order of the Phoenix. The plot device is messy but needed. You have Harry who says he will never open the package at Christmas but why doesn’t Sirius tell Harry immediately in the fire of umbridges office: “hey just use the mirror I got you!” - instead he lets Harry talk on. This mirror would have saved Sirius life - so I feel like (1) Rowling used it to compound the tragedy or (2) she herself forgot about it.

  • @tamsinmackinnon2309
    @tamsinmackinnon2309 2 года назад +1

    This theory is quite likely, but consider this. Harry’s and Voldemort’s wands have a connection because the tail feather cores come from the same phoenix. But if they have a tamed phoenix, the tail feathers would all come FROM THE SAME PHOENIX. Therefore, every single one of ollivander’s phoenix feather wands would all be interlinked, and I think people would have noticed if that was the case.

    Floo powder yes, makes perfect sense and thank you for answering a question I never even thought to ask, and raising yet more plot holes of these hilarious books.
    Ollivander though, no, I believe he has to have some other way to track down phoenix's and collect their feathers from nests, and it must be different ones, because otherwise every wand in his shop with a phoenix core wouldn't be able to duel each other and that's not good selling merch.
