I met this talented man at Anime Expo 2016 and I can honestly say, he is one of the most hardworking and such a kind and humble person I have ever met. There was a long line to get his autograph and he really took the time to draw in every single person's art book or drawing board etc. Even though the workers at AX told him that maybe he could not take those people waiting on standby because of the time, he insisted on letting them meet him and give them autographs anyway. He really wanted everyone to have a chance to meet him and draw in their books. I have never met someone who would take the time to draw and sign a autograph at the same time. And he never let anyone get singled out :) He's truly incredible and I'll never forget him. Thank you Yoshitaka Amano. It was a dream come true to meet the artist of my favorite video game series that he brought to life. Thank you
That's really awesome, thank you sharing.
The bests always has humble spirits. Hideo kojima did something similar in Mexico when he refused to leave until sign almost all the fans. He gave 3 hours overtime
Nice share, Amano's artwork has been inspiring me to create my own art most of my life, I love hearing this about him.
My wife got me his anthology Sky and now I have to meet him and get him to sign it.
Nomura has the cool anime-type aesthetic, but Yoshitaka Amano has this beautiful watercolor-esque, almost classical style that really resonates with me.
Amano is like a very oriental (Chinese-Japanese washed ink "shuimohua" or "Sumi-e") approach to the works of Harry Clarke poulwebb.blogspot.com/2017/07/harry-clarke-part-2.html
you summarized it perfectly. amano is the fantasy of final fantasy
@@oddysayYeah, his mystical artstyle suits Final Fantasy better
@@EvelynL.1112 Glad someone agrees ! what other games do you think would be interesting to see translated in amanos divinely mystical style. personally i think the tales series. could go well with his style
FFXVI needs him as art director. Its past time Square Enix showed us all their creative vision for graphical design and make the next main game of the series completely based on Amano's art. It would be stunning.
I wonder how he'd perform with an Okami sequel.
garbage !? come on man that's a bit harsh. i mean obviously it's not on tier with the legendary games : 6/7/9. but it was still a very good game. i personally think XV is the 4th best in the series.
Amano did most of the character designs and monster art for FF1-6, before Nomura took over
Your forgetting the game design part
@@IRahkuBz did you play it on release or after all the updates? cuz on release it was trash enough that I did not want to touch it ever again
“Hey Amano, draw Cloud.”
Amano: “Ha ha ha, well, I didn’t really do the character designs for FF VII... maybe you want a Warrior of Light or maybe Tina Brandford From FFVI-“
“Draw Cloud.”
I would ask him to draw me Front Mission
He would be like ok 🤔 ☁️
Can you please draw Astraea for me
I would ask him to draw a Kefka or maybe a Vivi
GO FORTH GARL VINLAND
As someone who has a tendency to be absolutely obsessed with FF, I love Amano's artwork. As a 11 year old kid, I thought it was strange; me and my friends would swoon over how cool Cloud or Zidane is (Nomura's and others' designs) and always kind of put Amano's to the side because it wasn't contemporary enough. As I get into adult years his art just has so much more meaning behind it, it has a rich traditional Japanese look to it mixed with imaginative elements. Lots of gold. Really unique and cool.
I thought Zidane is Amano's design
@@creamcreak Fun? fact: FF9 was the same as FF7 that characters was designed by other artist then Amano would do illustrations based on that designs. And in FF9 case, it was designed by Murase Shūkō, character designer of Gundam Wing and many other anime of all people.
Amano has the kind of art that is just signature to him. I’ve loved his art since I was a kid it just looks so surreal and like nothing else.
@@creamcreak I only swooned for Sephiroth xD
Yoshitaka Amano's art is absolutely beautiful. It really stands out as an aesthetic of it's own.
It's a shame to interview him about his work with FF7, it was the game where he really took a step back in the character design, and handed the reins to Nomura. Any previous game would've been more insightful than 7.
THANK YOU, man I was thinking the exact same thing! It's similar to having a once in a lifetime interview with George Lucas, and you only inquire about The Force Awakens.
6 really was the peak for both Amano and Uematsu in my opinion. not that they aren't amazing and truly the greatest art design duos in just about any media on other titles but in FF6 they really shine. I cry almost every time when i see Aerith's face at the end of FF7 but 6 has me in a prolonged state of awe throughout.
@@Hapasan808 🙄 stop complaining
@@leeroyleeroy Only if you stop making shitty avant-garde videos.
@@Hapasan808 Wow you checked my videos from 10 years ago 👏 Coming from the obese dork weeaboo who gets upset over Star Wars, Goosebumps and pretends to know about Japan 😂 How about you move out of your parents basement you cliché.
He's a living national treasure. He should be granted a lifetime award.
I love watching behind the scenes footage like this being a artist myself.
Evelyn L. Years of trail & error lol but most artist get inspired by others then build on top of that then you got some who can make it look easy.
yeah same.
I designed some good characters myself but not as good but I'm still proud of my drawing more or less
People underestimate the role of Amano. he should be brought back has an actual art designer for the games
I would love to see a current gem game that looks like Amano’s prints.
I completely agree with everyone saying that Amano should come back art director again. Sure Tetsuya has cool designs and very contemporary looks but he’s had the reigns of Final Fantasy for long enough and so Amano should take them once again. We’ve only ever seen his art direction in 2D, but imagine what he could do in 3D. It would be a wonderful sight to see
I love this man’s beautiful art. He’s a gift to the world.
His works for final fantasy VI we're legendary. The game fully enveloped his style perfectly.
One of the best characters done in ff Edea from ffviii was based on Amano's work. "I was trying to do an Amano's style character "-Tetsuya Nomura.
Incredible. Thanks for the great interview Polygon!
Wow, that article is great as well.
It's lovely to see Amano talk about his work, thank you!
Amano-san's work made final fantasy fantastical and mysterious
thank you for interviewing my favorite (and most influential to my personal style) artist of all time.
his art is exquisite, every cover of FF series is memorable, FF8 is a personal favorite, thank you for your work Amano sensei.
I'd love to meet the man in person one day, though I don't believe myself to be that fortunate. I think his positive attitude is enough to inspire me for 10 paintings at once! What a man, what an artist!
Great series of videos! Thanks for this!
i love his art style is so awesome, he is a legend!!!!!
He also does the artwork for the Vampire Hunter D novels!
I wish more people know how legendary this man is. He deserves worldwide recognition
there is no words to describe your art , master.
You forgot the most important question, Terra's hair is blonde or green?
Amano drew her with Blonde hair originally but Nomura recommended that she have green hair to set her apart as something different from a regular human. I personally like her better with green hair.
The sprites were first and she had green hair (so that she wasn't confused with Celes). The staff even jokes that if they did sprites based on Amano's artworks, almost all characters would be blonde.
Stuff like this is why I'm subbed to Polygon. Keep it up y'all - this rules.
this is rare video !! I love it
its so precious
Someday I will put many of those paintings and make a wallpaper for my room.
the most important reason why i become final fantasy fan because i saw his art which very beautiful and unique.
I meant him twice in person, once at Dragon con and Onicon and his one of the nicest artist I had the pleasure to meat. I inspired by his work.
Great video!
his imagination is unbelieveble, take a look at all his art for games and anime...amazing
I love these artist in their studio clips and Amano is a true Artist and draftsman, some one to look up to.
Games journalism is alive and well as long as Polygon exists. Keep making shit like this guys n gals.
Favorite artist hands down.
Es una persona muy especial, su virtud es única.
Good god, that original old style looks so good!
His design of cloud and sephiroth really brings out that fantasy world theme with his design
Just a Living Legend ! His art ......
He is also and has been the logo designer for all the main franchises
Sad, I hoped to see more of his work. I love especially the work he done for Final Fantasy 4, 5 and 6 ... i really like that style, you can see some around in this Video.
My favorite ARTIST of all time. It's not that he's the most techical, but his works always evoke a feeling or an emotion to me. I was always mystified by the character portraits in FFIII (FFVI jpn). And even though his versions of the VII characters aren't entirely accurate, they are still amazing and appreciated. I always looked at his work like "fine arts".
I dream of a day where he gets to art direct a whole ff game. His vision is so unique, mythical, mysterious, grandiose. Hes the soul of final fantasy and what makes it feel so timeless, for me at least.
I would proudly hang that silkscreen of Cloud and Red-XIII on my wall for all to see. An Amano piece would be a treasure to own
So wicked to watch this
His art is some of the most beautiful art to me, esp when he teamed up with Neil Gaimen.
I'd love to know more about this!
Man, if I could get my hands on signed art by Amano, I would die right then and there, happy.
Legend🙌🏽
Sephiroth in Amano's style is GODLY!
My dream is to see this artist at a Adobe conference. #crewlove final fantasy VII is the G.O.A.T.
My biggest costume design inspiration
The most iconic are Amano's monster design, its rarely change since the first FF and like when you see a Malboro and Behemoth its from FF.
It's incredibly most of Final Fantasy characters born from Amano's head
I remember in the back of the FFIX PS1 game manual, it had artwork of zidane and princess garnet. It looked dark, and gothic but flowy and elegant at the same time, and now after watching this video, I know who the creator of that art was :)
A living legend.
I'll rather a new FF with full Amano's artstyle than Nomura's one.
! ! Yoshitaka Amano!! !.Gracias por Ser el "Creador de Sephiroth"! ! Y los otros "Maravillosos Personajes de Fantasia Final! ! Y el Creador de Vampil D Hunter! ! Mis respetos "Señor Yoshitaka Amano " ! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Ffvi illustration one of my favorite
He's left-handed ! How cool
Masterpiece!
The best illustrator in the world. He is known as the "sublime artist"
Mi hija es fan de final fantasy y dibuja súper profesional apena tiene 18 años espero algún día llegue a ser una ilustradora famosa 👌💓
Damn that editing had me fooled that he is ambidextrous!
Amano and Yoshida are the best character designers for square. Yoshida did FF tactics FFXII and FFXIV also vagrant story.
damn i want that big hand drawn print of FF7 with his autograph
So he's the one who draws the fancy Victorian meets old school Japanese mideval style art. Very cool
Sephiroth in the style of Yoshitaka Amano looks like Alucard from Castlevania.
I really wanna get his autograph in person so bad. Unfortunately im still a kid, cant travel and go in anime expos
cool. i liked Final Fantasy 7!
Watching this while waiting for FF7Remake!
i wish this was 2 hours long
Aw i wanted to hear more 😂
Ok!! next Yoko Shimomura!!
I want to draw like him.
Couldn't help noticing that this video was uploaded 7 years ago and then FF7 Rebirth comes out next month.
once i saw the 1st pic, i know right away he's the one behind the legendary FFVI. terra, celes, sabin, edgar, locke, shadow...etc
what kind of paint is in the "big art color" pouch on his desk, is it acrylic? I've seen those same bags in other videos of him painting
The video game industry has some of the most iconic artists in the world next to the Renaissance artists but society still thinks gaming isn't art...
Until BioShock came out
i would love to see kefka and gogo in the quality if ffviiR
Amano and Sakaguchi were the soul and body of Final Fantasy
You forgot Uematsu
@@vexcarius7100 Uematsu carried the spirit
Even Yoshitaka Amano ships Cloud and Aerith !
Can you keep your shipping nonsense out of here? It’s really irritating
Claire Farron I’m free ! I do whatever I want. You could have just ignored it ! 🤷♀️
does it involve any backflips?
I would've rather heard about FFIX or 5 or the first game, but sure, FFVII works. I only bring this up because FFVII (and projects after it) had more artists on staff than their earlier ventures, and I believe FFIX was the most artistically directed around Amano's style between 7 through 12.
It might just be me but I kinda wish that his concepts were actually used for the character models BEYOND just the traits. I mean like… to make the models feel like they’ve come from his style. I don’t know, just me but I really wish that were the case.
As a kid, I liked Nomura's deaign because they are "cool" but as I grew older, I learned to appreciate Amano's design because it's more "artistic" and less "childish" compared to Nomura.
An artist like him or Takehiko Inoue (both work with Hironobu Sakaguchi) is what Final Fantasy need. Nomura is a very good character designer but all we need is a classic touch for the next FF. Final Fantasy is lack of medieval fantasy touch right now. They need to get it back to it's roots to make Final Fantasy great again. If Amano didn't want to take the job as the next FF designer, they could hire Itahana or Yoshida at least. They're proven can bring medieval looks to FF series.
It’s a shame he didn’t do new artwork for FFVII remake. I wonder if he would design a new logo for the part 2
what medium does he use?
As much as i liked the video that was completely different from how it was described in the article. I didn't see Aeris/th once
Stephanie Smith She was in the silkscreen print laying down as Cloud looked over her. It was hard to see her since the box with english translation mostly covered her up lol.
ohh i see her now
It's sad that the most of his speaking doesn't make sense in Japanese because of the bad editing.
I love vampire hunter D
He didn't just work on FF7.. He's been there since the beginning.
Yess, since Final Fantasy 1 until this day. Damn what a dedication...
I thought Nomura illustrated FF7 characters, not Amano?
Next game after VII where Amano was character designer was IX and then the "Crystal Chronicles" spinoff series
A shame that it's so short
i must suck to always be asked about something you did
30 years ago...
its like, ya know, between then and now, I've been alive... I think?
I have 2 tattoo pieces from his art
Is that a attack on titan fan to his left!!!? 😱
He is like the japanese Alex Ross
when you read berserk for the first time... T_T
日本の宝です。知っている人は、あまりいないけどね。
