Oh! Fun facts! 2:45 - all those are only part of his artwork...he keeps every single piece of illustrations/char designs he makes because he says each feels like it's a child of his. Rarely has he ever given any away. #2: he used to be somewhat of a procrastinator. When he first was hired by square to make character designs, theyd come to his house to pick up the art and he'd make them wait by serving them tea and talking to them while he rapidly made the characters. Square was delighted by his work(and impressed he could pull it out so quickly) that they didn't mind lol
The square of the former days was very much a ragtag team of superbly creative people, sadly the company collapsed unto itself over its own outgrown ambitions in 2000.
I met him one day, when he came to visit campus. Everyone must have been on deadlines (others told me later they were sad they missed it or didn’t even know about it), because his event was (strangely) only partially filled during that day. I spoke to him, and he drew an image in black and white on the back of one of my own mini drawings on bristol board (I didn’t have any other paper, or a copy of his book) in the mini portfolio I had with me. I consider it quite the honor he made the drawing for me as a gift, considering the above, Lola Lola. He was quite thoughtful!
After studying art in college, I’ve been having a hard time to find flow in my process. I feel better about my art then before learning about the art principles in school. I come back to this video because Mr. Amano’s process helps me remember the feeling of that flow. There’s something raw and beautiful about his work.
It’s been 2 years and even if nothing has changed visually or physically, I hope that your growth and creativity never ceases to exist and blossom. Artists are extremely under appreciated in todays world, my grandfather and great grandfather were artists and my father, after art school, was too depressed to continue his art. Seeing his passion die over years has taught me to always appreciate the beauty of art and artistic expression. Please never give up on art and creat great things, if you genuinely lost the passion that’s okay you don’t have to continue. But if your inspired and willed to do it but lack motivation, I hope you find it again in this lifetime.
There aren't many artists that build an entire world that feels so plucked out of a dream. Amano's my favorite. If you like him there's an American artist Winsor McCay that feels very much like a post-steampunk version of Amano
I am unable to adequately express how much his artwork meant to my conception of Final Fantasy. The FFVI manual and strategy guide artwork, especially combined with Uematsu's music, took my 11 year old imagination to places only hinted at by those adorable character sprites. I can still barely put it into words. Glad to see he's still at it!
Same. The FFVI manual was my first encounter with Amano's work and Uematsu's music. I was 12. It still inspires me today. I've bought artbooks, bought cd's, went to concerts, cosplayed versions of his illustrations. I've done some of those "draw your character in different styles" memes and used Amano's style as one of them (it's a lot of fun to mimic).
Final Fantasy 6 / 3 is still one of my favorites epically for character design. People who've only played 7 and plus are not true fans until they seen the classics.

Amano seems to have healthy boundaries towards his own art. When I listen to him it feels like he doesn't know what's happening when he draws but is still doing it with his whole heart and soul. I wish I knew how he does that.
Absolutely, Yoshitaka Amano's ability to translate his imaginative visions directly onto paper is indeed remarkable. It's a rare talent that not only showcases his skill but also grants him a sense of freedom in his artistic expression. This efficiency and freedom allow him to create art that truly captivates and transports viewers into the fantastical worlds of his imagination.
Artist Paul Klee referred to the drawing process as 'taking a line for a walk'. You often start in a general direction with no idea where you're going, just keep moving and see where you end up. Amano seems very comfortable with starting in front of a blank sheet of paper and taking that sow wander into the unknown
In portugues(Brazil) "A mano" Means when you friend or people who are close to you do something that make you feel bored... Like -ah Man! -Damm dude They really means that. ;)
To me, Amano's style has such a surreal, dreamlike quality. There's this energy and emotion to his work that's hard to describe, but it exists there, flowing freely and vividly through each of his works.
It blows my mind that this one man has single handedly inspired one of the most iconic jrpg series of all time. And he basically just does cover art and character design. His actual images aren't in most of the productions they are produced for, and yet his cover art is some of the most beautiful I've ever seen and his character designs permeate every title. Ps. I LOVE Angel's Egg.
i'm still praying we one day get a new final fantasy that actually tries to replicate or directly translate amano's ethereal style instead of just using it as a jumping off point for general visual design.
I was about to comment the same thing. Imagine if Square experimented with new art styles to differentiate each new iteration of the series (a la like Nintendo does with Zelda)? The difference between FF9 and the other games was probably the biggest 3D artistic leap we've gotten, but there is so much potential to dip into new techniques rather than reiterating the same art design philosophy over the last two decades. Like, I'm playing Okami right now, and I can only imagine how gorgeous a AAA game with a similar style would be.
Thank you for saying this. Squaresoft and Square Enix are just two totally different entities. The beauty and simplicity of the older games is now lost to overly-detailed sharp graphics, voice acting and cut scenes.
The closest thing I've ever seen to Amano's style being rendered with today's engines is Omega M in FFXIV. My God, the 3d model team did a stellar job on him. I remember my jaw dropping seeing Amano's style brought to life like that.
I come back to this video every month or so and watch it a few times. Just a beautifully shot and composed video. It makes me feel good. Thank you for your work.
So freaking humble! Literally just pure passion. Love seeing artists like these, where they didn’t strive to get attention, when artists create for the sake of just creating.
I relate to him so much when he said that till now he doesn't know what's his style, I've been drawing for quite awhile and I don't seem to have a touch, like my illustrations keep getting different each time, but as he said drawing what we feel like it is probably more important
Yeah don't stress about it too much. And many who say they have a style in reality have a look that's defined by their limitations as artists/lack of draughtsmanship. Going for an intentional aesthetic is something else again.
Amano is one of my favorite artists, I saw his artwork firs time when finding beautiful artworks about Vampire Hunter D. His illustrations decorate the light novel book's covers and stunning ink illustrations potray scenes of the stories. His character designs and illustrations are just amazing.
This whole video made me smile. As a fresh architect, I feel restless these days. I don't know my style or if i'm doing the right thing. Now i know none of that matters, just do what you love. Don't overthink too much. Just do something that you enjoy. This reminds me to go back to the first time i start my design journey : my love to create things. Thank you so much for sharing this !
Thank you, uploader! For Westerners who want an English book of his art work, I highly recommend "Worlds of Amano" which was first published in 2007 or Fairies, as well as all the "The Sky: Art of Final Fantasy" books (there are 3 total I believe). Some of these are available to read online & purchase. Many modern games designers pay tribute to Amano's style, a good example being Ubisoft's "Child of Light" (2014) where the movement of the protagonists' flowing hair was specifically based on Amano's linework
I remember going to his art gallery a few years back. I was amazed at all the different mediums he used to show his work. I had only known him for his animated movies like Vampire Hunter D and the Final Fantasy series. I got to meet him and he said that he was always trying different styles so that he wouldn't lose interest.
Amano's work is on another level, and so inspiring! Angel's Egg is incredibly stunning visually. What a world he's created. (also FF artwork, Vampire Hunter D, etc...)
Thank you. I love this man, and I want to know everything I can about him. He's a modern art genius and deserves more than anyone alive today to be in the art history books.
😯 Amano was one of the co-creators of the film Tenshi no Tamago (1985), a drawing appeared with the protagonist in 03:04. I really appreciate his work. (thanks from Brazil for this channel)
Im loving this. Amano is my favourite videogame concept artist , and to get to know more of his way of work is a blessing. People like this are masters of this day and era. They teach so much with only a song, a video, a piece of paper etc.
What a legend. For someone to just conjure up such stunning creations is nothing short of truly special. This man is deeply rooted in what video games are today and thanks to him we've fallen in love with wonderful characters and a truly stunning art style. Amazing video, thank you.
I have so much appreciation for artists that can dedicate their talents to bringing these worlds, creatures and characters to life. Amano has had a legendary career.
Thank you so so very much for sharing your gift with all of us on this earth. Your characters reach out and touch all of us. Your Imagination supersedes you. Your patience and expression of your artwork are just absolutely magnificent. Arigato. ^^
Final Fantasy means so much to me. The original FFI was my first encounter with the series, and I've been a fan ever since. I know it won't happen, but if I could ever meet and shake Yoshitaka Amano-sensei's or Nobuo Uematsu-sensei's hand, I would get super emotional... despite the fact I'm almost 40. The music and art of this series have special places in my heart. Always will!
i have nothing but immense respect and admiration for this man. the whole body of his works is a marvel, simply a pleasure to behold. yoshitaka amano is one of the most fascinating, unique artist of our time, and his influence on design in video games will stay with us for a long time. great video as usual. i am as always in love with your composition work and pacing. every frame and shot feel meaningful and manage to convey a pleasant, inviting atmosphere. the subtle soundtrack fits well the pensive feeling of the video. splendid work, thank you :)
I love his art so much! Read his biography right away when it came out and got to see some more of his art and how he has maintained his style from the very beginning 💙 thank you for this mini documentary! I hope I get to see an exhibition of his art irl sometime in my life !
Yoshitaka Amano is truly a Gifted Man . His view and his talent are true inspiration to me , even though i'm not an artist with the brush . I truly wish the best for him and his paintings.
thank YOU! i never saw many of these arts from amano, honestly i only saw FFs arts from hin. its so amazing! i loved the final ones, his new arts, they are so amazing!
i’m an aspiring video game artist, and i used to look at different concept art for western video games. i’ve never played final fantasy but i saw his work for the game while researching and was immediately captivated by how different his style was to the concept art i’ve seen. it’s really dreamlike and fantastical and just so beautiful!!
Amano has always been a huge influence on my artistic journey. Its wonderful seeing him work in his studio! Seeing those final fantasy illustrations I've seen through my whole life being held by amano on the original paper really struck a chord with me. I didn't realize how small some of those final fantasy character sheets were. To think that from such small, normal sheets of paper, he was able to to introduce millions to worlds he dreamed up is amazing. thank you for the interview!
That basement floor with all his archives was quite impressive to say the least... Each drawer included many of our childhood memories. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for all your invaluable work interviewing the masters. To leave this insight into their works for generations present and future is an accomplishment few little can boast of.
Thanks for the kind word, we really think that there is more than can be done. We had this idea of making Archipel an "archive" log of Japan's creative minds, which is still something we want to pursue.
His artstyle is so pretty, really love how he puts colours together. Besides that, its the timelessness of his works that truly impress me. Thank you guys for uploading this!
One great minuscule pleasure for me is watching artists of any kind in their studios showing their art and process ! It brings me happiness and inspiration !
Love Amano he's one of my inspirations to do art I love his style and all the details no matter how big or small the work is. I think the hard part for most of us today is probably being compared to other people any time you draw something even if you never heard of something people always go it looks like such and such. I think more people should appreciate the artists work rather then constantly comparing it to some one else.
I could spend days in the designs and colored patterns of clothing and back grounds and faces. Thank you for your comments about your art and your style. Oh and about making a living as an artist. That part I’d like to forget. I don’t have a video game though all my grandchildren do. I’ve only seen glimpses of your paintings and drawings on u tube. Your relaxed attitude about the ease of making art for you was refreshing too. Thank you.
As much as I like Nomura's artstyle, he'll never be on the level of Amano to me. His works all have this weird ethereal look is just impossible to replicate. To this day my phone's wallpaper has been a crop of Terra in her magitek armor overlooking a city drawn in amano's style from his japan book.
Completely different artstyle between Nomura and Amano. That’s like comparing Van Gogh with Michelangelo. Both are great artist and we should keep it at that.
I think they're just two different styles. Nomura style is more Manga-like (he wanted to be a mangaka in his youth) and Amano style is like more artistic, his works almost reminds me of an oniric experience. I love them both but I don't think is right to say that one is better than the other. They're just different artists with different styles.
Nomura concepts are way more diferent. I always think that he is more an Stylist than a creator. No one can change a design like Nomura , and still be able to see other people's work on int.
If i have to compare, Yoshitaka Amano is like Yoji Shinkawa for Konami. Whenever you see their artworks, you'll always think "OH! Final Fantasy!" or "Metal Gear Solid!".
Really huge fan! This is first time ever i seen his face and work on field. I truly fall in love his work when i discover Final Fantasy 6 artwork. Thank you, i never thought this will happened.
Thank you for showing us an interview of Amano. Shame it wasn't a longer video. I hope we see more video game illustrators in future. Keep it up, you guys are doing great!
This was a really informative watch, did not know who made those amazing illustrations in the final fantasy games i played, but know i want to know more.
Amano's rendition of Elric of Melnibone is still one of my absolute favorites. This man is a beast and I can't thank you enough for this video, Archipel.
man from Akihiko Yoshida-sensei (ogre series) and Yoshitaka Amano's style love them they give off this feeling, a desire that will immerse you into that world. Another great docu Thanks Archipel!
Seeing this interviews of people that I admire since childhood, accessible for foreigners... Thank you so much for your work
I absolutely agree. These videos are a real contribution to culture.
Thank you for watching, we're glad to be able to share these glimpses in Japan's creative minds.
Agreed! So great to see his beautiful work gain more recognition globally, like his recent work with Vogue
This channel is the best thing I found in 2020

His artstyle is so pretty, really love how he puts colours together. Besides that, its the timelessness of his works that truly impress me. Thank you guys for uploading this!
Thanks for the videos! watching those masters is such an ispiration for us artists and people that just admire arts! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for sharing this. I remember seeing these illustrations as I grew up, pulling me into this world. Amano's a legend.
Thanks for watching!
One great minuscule pleasure for me is watching artists of any kind in their studios showing their art and process ! It brings me happiness and inspiration !
I feel instantly entranced when I see his works. They’re so flowy and have a liquid quality to them that no one else could ever hope to replicate
one of my fav artists of all time
This channel is priceless. 🙏Thank u for allowing us a look into the lives of these incredible artists.
Thanks for the kind word!
Thank you for sharing this video 👌🏻🕊✨
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this interview, i didn't know how much I need it until I saw it
Glad we could help :)
Amano is a legend, his artwork is absolutely incredible
I could spend days in the designs and colored patterns of clothing and back grounds and faces. Thank you for your comments about your art and your style. Oh and about making a living as an artist. That part I’d like to forget. I don’t have a video game though all my grandchildren do. I’ve only seen glimpses of your paintings and drawings on u tube. Your relaxed attitude about the ease of making art for you was refreshing too. Thank you.
Studied many artists, but never saw one who awed me as much as this master
You are a great designer that I really admire. I especially like the works of Final Fantasy 6
I have the same background on my phone! Amano is number one. Cheers!
A legendary artist. Thank you for this peek into the man's life, Archipel, top quality as always.
Thanks for watching!

作家の、特に絵描きの作業風景はいつみても興味深く面白いなあ!
His art style gives the Final Fantasy series' logos and illustrations a mythological and mystical vibe. Amazing :D
And I was just now playing FInal Fantasy 7 to. Yoshitaka Amano is one of my favorite artists of all time.
man from Akihiko Yoshida-sensei (ogre series) and Yoshitaka Amano's style love them they give off this feeling, a desire that will immerse you into that world. Another great docu Thanks Archipel!

Thanks for watching!
This interview is as great as it is frustratingly short !
Thank you!
Such gorgeous stuff. I can't get over that strange quality in Amano's work. Final fantasy would lose all artistic identity without him.
His office is sick man! He is such a legend!
Amano is my favorite artist ever and my biggest inspiration. I really want to thank him.
