There are three people Final Fantasy can be thankful for: Hironobu Sakaguchi, Nobuo Uematsu, and Yoshitaka Amano. Hironobu's vision created a legacy that has seen success, Nobuo created some of the most iconic songs, and Amano's title work is legendary. I can appreciate an Amano piece of art, and his work on Vampire Hunter D is among his best. His art stands out as among the most distinct in the world.

I really want Square Enix to make a Final Fantasy game that brings Amano's art to life in 3D. The technology we have is good enough to do it unlike in the PS1 era. They uploaded a video for FF15 called "The Big Bang" that took an Amano painting and made it 3D.

I wished the new Final Fantasy Origin game would be a remake of the first one with this art style instead
Many FFXIV bosses are basicly 3D renders of Amano's illustrations and paintings. Business Development Unit 3 worked some nice miracles translating Amano's art into 3D so flawlessly as they did.
Amano’s artwork has always been a favorite of mine. Like Yoji Shinkawa, Amano manages to make pieces that feel familiar yet distinct. And the fact he’s self taught is nothing short of inspirational.
I met Amano sensei in 2019 and even had to opportunity to see him do a illustration live, it was amazing how quickly and and precisely he moved across the canvas.
"Despite being self taught" Because he was self taught that he is what he is, the driving force and sense of purpose of this man, to learn by himself, is immense, the others can't make it even with help.
This sounds great to preserve Amano's artwork, it's a place that brings the art to life, can be seen from anywhere in the world and can last forever; is the ideal museum
This man is probably one of the people I look up to most. I am in love with his mysterious and captivating art style. I hope that one day I’ll be able to develop my own art style similar to his but with my own unique twist.
I've enjoyed Amano since I was a kid. I'm so glad that I was able to get ahold of the Liliana, Dreadhorde General card that he did the Japanese artwork for Magic The Gathering. It was an amazing piece.
I had the pleasure to see his artwork in a small exhibition in tokyo lately. I can only say I nearly cried. His art is so full of movement and detail that it is hard to grasp. He is so unique
It was a very smart idea for the "Dissidia: Final Fantasy" series to use the then-unused designs that Yoshitaka Amano created for concepts for each mainline game.
I love this man's art SO MUCH, it's literally the only reason I ever played a Final Fantasy game to begin with, I just fell in love with his FFVI art and I *had* to play it.
I have loved Amano´s art for decades... and Frazzeta from some years after.. I didnt knew Amano draw inspiration from him.. art its an never ending circle... thanks for showing this.. Ill sure check the kick
I bought my very first wall scroll, a full body D against a full moon by Amano that can be best described as nothing short of breathtaking, in 2001 in the AnimeIowa Dealer's Room. To this day, it remains my favorite piece of art in my collection. The man possesses an extraordinary-nay, a staggering command of watercolors.
I'm not a Final Fantasy fan or would have known Amano's name from looking at his art but the moment I saw the thumbnail i thought “damn this artstyle would look great on a Moorcock novel” and lo and behold... Great video for an amazing artist that shaped worlds dear to many
I still have my sealed box set of "The Sky" by Amano. As someone who has grown up with FF, I essentially grew up seeing his art on the covers and concepts. Definitely holds a place in m'kokoro.
8:54 is how I've always wanted a remake of something like FF6 to look. Take Amano's artwork and make it "flesh". No hyper-realism like the FF7 Remake, but use what we all imagined those pixels represented, what the box art conveyed. Seeing Edgar and Eiko and Queen Brahne in these 3D models true to his art shows it can be done. Make it so Square (unfortunately the company is a mess and will never do it).
I met Amano once at Otakon in the late 90s. He signed and even added to a Vampire Hunter D poster that I had. Unfortunately I lost the poster to a flood in my basement a few years later.
It's even worse. Many westerners still today discriminate against this type of "oriental" drawing and even anime, as these drawings were INSPIRED by western drawings such as Disney's.
It's even more damning when people don't just call it art or animation. Instead they distinguish if it's from a certain region or country and judge it by that.
Big fan of Mr. Amano! Its so interesting hearing the story behind Final Fantasy and the artwork. The artwork is so timeless and beautiful it begs you to explore every inch to absorb the smallest details.
I’ve seen speculation online that Yoshitaka Amano has also taken great inspiration from the artist Leon Bakst. When you look at Bakst’s costume designs for the Ballets Russes you can really see flourishes that Amano includes in a lot of his work. Both are favourites of mine so I hope this link between them is true!
bruh, this is like seeing the boss of Trial 2 in Endwalker and how [they] look like an Amano artwork brought to 3D but with SO MANY MORE pieces! I would legit buy a VR headset for this, holy shit.
I saw the artbook with the thumbnail's image in my bookstore recently and *immediately* knew that it had to have been drawn by the same person who drew my favorite canine medicine salesman. I nearly climbed the shelf to get to it! I hadn't known about Amano's involvement with other works or franchises, and honestly (and unfortunately) had assumed that Mononoke was his only big art credit. I wear it as a badge of supreme weebdome that I accurately identified it as being from the same mangaka from 5 feet above me and down a different aisle, haha. Thank you for the informative video!

I found one of his art books at a used book store from 1989. I got 12 images in and had to see if anyone else recognized his genius, just to be shocked at how many things he’s been involved with. It bends the mind that he had the ability to produce so much art
As a teenager, I saw a Wolverine and Elektra graphic novel illustrated by Amano. I never got to read it, it was expensive and I was broke, but it looked amazing
I was lucky enough to have run into him in NYC during one of his gallery show. He was so down to earth. He took the time to talk to an up and coming artist ( me ). My intention was just to ask for art tips but while he and his translator discuss what I said something got lost in translation. He approached me and grabbed my sketch pad and then he proceeded to sketch "Vampire Hunter D "on it, at the same time telling me in his broken english what he does to get ideas for inspiration. My jaws dropped in surprise and was utterly grateful for what he just did. I now have an original Amano art in my home. After telling my friend that was with me at the time , what just happened. He then got himself a sketch as well. Amano is such a generous person.
Thank you for this vid. Fantastic. Amano is my favorite living artist and has been for almost 30 years. It's been great watching him grow artistically. Amano ... Wow what can you say about this guy? He has basically been brilliant his entire career. I wasn't aware of just how talented he was at such a young age so thanks for mentioning that. Makes sense. He was already making big moves regarding his future when other people are simply trying to make sense of themselves. He knows where he's goin and he knows how to get there. Talent always finds a way. What impresses me about Amano is that he has the work ethic, direction and motivation to go with his talent. When all these things come together, good things happen. The dimensions of his art sometimes borrow stylistically from Klimt and others but he always finds a way to make the art his own while always maintaining his unique vision along with his professional principles which include hard work, dedication to his craft and his efforts to continue growing as an artist. I'd say it's worked out pretty well for him! AND US. Then there's his artwork... man o man. It's hard to describe how amazing it is to get lost in an Amano landscape. There is attention to nuance and detail that isn't really overstated. Masterful. A lot of his work seems kind of subtle in its sense of engagement, imo. Once you see art from Amano you never forget it though. It's not flashy at first glance but the subtle sense of confident poise in his art, relaxed figures, unique color schemes and sense of movement work at you long after viewing it. There is something spiritual about the sense of composition, or me. I'll be looking at a piece of his and then all of a sudden I'm in a different place. It's no different than listening to a piece of music that takes you somewhere better. People sometimes complain about the placidity of facial features in Amano's work but it always seems like the characters are both serious and contemplative in how they are drawn. This adds drama and internal dialogue to the scene. There's something so pure about the way his artwork seems to flow on and off the page. The character forms seem like they are almost in movement because of the exaggerated contours and sweeping pencil lines which mark his work. There are quite a few little embellishments in his work, clothing patterns, little squigglies, pencil outlines etc which have become a sort of signature. His final fantasy character and concept art is legendary but I like how this video draws upon the fact that he's more than that. My favorite works of his are probably from Neil Gaiman's "Dream Hunters" series. Particularly "The Sandman". It's a fascinating story that draws on eastern influences in a western writing style. Highly creative, highly imaginative with leeway for interpretation. Gaiman and Amano coming together just might be about the most glorious an amano nerd can hope for.
Thank you so much for making this video!! The artwork of Final Fantasy is the very first thing that attracted me to the series! FFV has to be my most favorite cover art with the dragon, however FFX is equally as fascinating to me, I knew from looking at 10's that there was going to be a sense of spirituality to the game.
The artwork from a game guide magazine for final fantasy caught my fascination. And led me to start playing final fantasy game. It's was the style and colours that got me..
I’ve never seen another artist who could capture movement quite like Amano. All of his pieces look like they’re moving. Even static poses somehow have movement in them. Not to mention his ridiculous use of color and patterns, his style of art is truly his own. One of my all time faves for sure.
Oh wow! I've only heard about this today but it is so exciting! Amano's artwork are some of my favourites and it would be great to see it in VR. My favourite logos are 8 and 10. 8 was very romantic and different to other FF logos. I love the detailing and color scheme in 10's logo.
You just made me aware of the campaign; I'm going to add to that kickstarter right away. That artwork has been inspiring along with every Final Fantasy title to date and he fully deserves the recognition for his efforts.
I always dreamed that the Final Fantasy games, when the time was technology allowed, would be artistically directed by Yoshitaka Amano. These 3D models of his works show that it is possible and masterful. The reality is that the series has become very generic on an artistic level, except for a few details (oddly enough, those that come from Amano's art). Square should consider this.
It should be noted that Amano is a supporter of the LDP - to the point that he drew art of Shinzo Abe and his cabinet as samurai - despite the fact that they oppose everything that would make Japan better and are among the reasons for many, if not most, of the country's problems.
You know i could sit here and watch a video with Amano's artwork, overlayed with Nobuo Uematsu's music playing. It'd probably be melancholic but beautiful at the same time.
First Time I ever heard of this! But yeah, 3 years ago I Took and Art History Class and did an Essay piece and presentation on Yoshitaka Amono! Some of this information I already knew. But I knew nothing about that Virtual Art Museum! :)
I remember playing the original FF way back in the day on the NES. It was only the second rig I had ever played (after Dragon Warrior), and a large part of my love for the game was Amano's artwork.
When I was younger, I was rather dismissive of his artwork (and yes I know that was very stupid for teenage me to do). But, over the past few years, as I've taken up drawing and wanting to make something of my own I've become more and more enamored with Yoshitaka Amano's artwork, right down to trying to find books containing nothing but his artwork. There is truly no other talent like his. Also, the music in this video is pretty gorgeous and fitting. If only you could direct us to where's it's from.
I just found this earlier this week, pretty much thanks to your KS campaign. Went looking at other campaigns that would be in a similar vein, and saw this one. Come pay-day next week, I am going to back/support them.
This exhibit makes me so happy to see! Will definitely be checking out their Patreon and sharing this video. He’s been my favorite artist for decades and his work on VI has made it very special to me. A remake based on his work would be amazing, much better than a ‘pixel remaster’. SE needs to stop being lazy and going for the quick buck.
I wonder if Araki redesign has influence from Amano, some Jojo covers look a lot like FF illustrations, ofc I know the magazines influence him a lot as well, the woman who draws for Castlevania also has a lot of Amano feeling imo, could be a coincidence as well
That vr museum is my new favorite thing. I'm gonna Kickstart the hell out of it. Just take my paychecks. I don't need to pay rent. I'll live in the virtual world from now on.
I love this, but the 3D aspect and especially material surfaces and lighting looks several generations old. Is this just a very quick mockup or is this actually the engine it's being made in?
9:15 shame the virtual environment doesn't match the quality of the artwork. Vampire hunter D deserves a gothic castle with lit candles, Final Fantasy as well. Not 10 min worth of modeling space museum.
Tatsunoko I remember those Japanese Cartoons from the early 90s. Bob in a Bottle and Samurai Pizza Cats were my favs from back then. Years later I found out about Yatterman and found the villains similar to Team Rocket from Pokemon. Would have loved it if only we got that series in the west.
Imagine a world where a Final Fantasy V Remake exist and its a full Amano art fever dream.

Breathtakingly beautiful! I've always wanted an Amano art book. I think its time I find one.
As a huge Amano fan, this is the most exciting project I’ve heard about in years 😊. Thank you for bringing it to light.
Probably my favorite visual artist alive.
Looking forward to the release of the VR museum. Glad that its more than met its goal.
The total pledged amount has nearly doubled for the Kickstarter campaign since this video was uploaded!
You just made me aware of the campaign; I'm going to add to that kickstarter right away. That artwork has been inspiring along with every Final Fantasy title to date and he fully deserves the recognition for his efforts.
i set an alarm for when the kickstarter launched. i immediately signed up as VIP! i can not wait to see this released. Amano is my favorite artist.
8:00 just HAD to include the train suplex 🤣
Thank you for making this video. I had no idea Amano did illustrations for Michael Moorecock. Incredible!
This is pretty cool. Wow. What an incredible thing to have happen!
His art style is beautiful. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for introducing me to two really amazing artists :)
Amano work always stood out, so unique. The Final Fantasy 8 logo is my favourite, Squall and Rinoa embrace is beautifully conveyed.
You know i could sit here and watch a video with Amano's artwork, overlayed with Nobuo Uematsu's music playing. It'd probably be melancholic but beautiful at the same time.
I hadn’t heard of the campaign. So I’m very grateful for this video 🙏🏾
His style is beautiful and one of a kind. I have no doubt it will be displayed in a museum if it's not already.
I love Amano's art, my copy of The Sky with the autograph is my prized possesion.
First Time I ever heard of this! But yeah, 3 years ago I Took and Art History Class and did an Essay piece and presentation on Yoshitaka Amono!
Some of this information I already knew. But I knew nothing about that Virtual Art Museum! :)
Never even heard of this dude before, but the moment I saw the thumbnail I realized that he did my favorite cover art for The Book of the New Sun.
I remember playing the original FF way back in the day on the NES. It was only the second rig I had ever played (after Dragon Warrior), and a large part of my love for the game was Amano's artwork.
I kinda liked all of the logo that he made in FF series it just catches your attention in some way haha
He's one of my biggest inspirations as a artist
I wonder if Araki redesign has influence from Amano, some Jojo covers look a lot like FF illustrations, ofc I know the magazines influence him a lot as well, the woman who draws for Castlevania also has a lot of Amano feeling imo, could be a coincidence as well
Heard about it here, but you can bet your last Phoenix Down that I'm telling every single person I know about it now!!!
I will forever put him on a pedestal just for his character design for vampire hunter d
the painting at 949 is still, to this day, my laptop lock screen.
I own FIVE and what people don't realize is that his painting are HUGE!!! :D Love him!!
I had the FF9 art book when I was younger and was obsessed
I had no idea this exhibit existed.
I’ve wanted a 2d FF with his water color paintings as the art assets
That vr museum is my new favorite thing. I'm gonna Kickstart the hell out of it. Just take my paychecks. I don't need to pay rent. I'll live in the virtual world from now on.
Amano should have done the box art for elden ring tbh
YASSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! Exactly their we GOOOOO
I disagree. The box art is fine as it is. However, I'd like to see art of the game in Amano's style...
@@Player-jh4ko well after watching this video I'm really curious to see Amano do a box art for bloodborne 2 atleast
I love this, but the 3D aspect and especially material surfaces and lighting looks several generations old. Is this just a very quick mockup or is this actually the engine it's being made in?
Yoshitaka Amano and Yoji Shinkawa are my favourite artists in existence
I was lucky enough to go to his exhibit in shanghai and it was fantastic
Thank you for making this video I never heard of him
9:15 shame the virtual environment doesn't match the quality of the artwork. Vampire hunter D deserves a gothic castle with lit candles, Final Fantasy as well. Not 10 min worth of modeling space museum.
OMG he did that cover of vampire hunter D?! i remember seeing it as a kid and thinking "BAD ASS!"
For sure about to check out his kickstarter! 8 is my favorite logo but they're all amazing.
mate, great video.
What's the name of the tune in the background playing from minute 1?
He illustrated the covers for the JP release of the book of the new sun tetralogy by Gene Wolfe.
