What is the nature of the 3D render engine AF will be using? Ray-Tracing? Volumetric lighting and shadows? All that good stuff? How is it with complex scenes?
Give it a try and see! It can do shadows, but we chose to get the shadow with our tool since we needed to composite it and they don't have shadow catchers yet.
What would your solution be to get that shadow moving perfectly with the 3D element? I imagine when u pressed play with this setup the shadow didn’t move correctly
for somesthing so steady - it'd be quick to keyframe the three points - BUT what I love to do is make three 3D nulls for the start, end and slant locations - place them in 3D space properly and then add a toComp([0,0,0]) expression for each into VFX Shadow - then voilà - perfect 3D placement even with a moving or tracked camera.

Precomps still have their place, there just won't be...dozens of them.
After Effects really needs to rebuild. Its super slow and is getting worse.
Indeed, if you go for a node compositing you will never go back to AE for anything different than motion graphics.
