- Today, I'm gonna take you along with me as I embark on my very first journey into the world of mechanical keyboard modding.
We're gonna start by cracking open my keyboard, getting into the nitty-gritty of all its core components, and then upgrading it with some new switches, some foam, and keycaps that I found online.
By the end of this vid, you'll see my keyboard transformed from a regular blue switched keyboard into a beautifully thocky one. So, if you're curious about mechanical keyboards or just wanna chill and vibe with me while I mod mine, then sit back, relax, and let's get to it!

damn 70 bucks for switches is wild, highground is truly the apple of the keyboard market
Yeah fr there a reason they are the number one TikTok brand
@@Twisted_Knob fr
bro look at lubed glorious lynx switches, $107 just for a 75%
bro should've at least looked up a review before buying "cry-pound" switches. I know for a fact he got persuaded to try them seeing one of his fav streamers, RUclipsrs use their stuff in their own setups.. what bro donno is that they're often associated/sponsored by highground to feature their overpriced trash in their videos.. sad he so casually got ripped off 😞
@@redpandaclips. or just buy outemu mechanical switches 🤷♂
thank you bro, you inspired me to get this keyboard and mod it myself, i got the same exact keycaps and i used gateron milky yellows for my switches and mine sounds so good, i did use some foam laying around my house and used the one it came with, i have 5 layers yes 5 layers of masking tape and it sounds so good. thank you bro
dude same except i used the akko v3 creamy yellow switches and mine sounds perfect! my dream keyboard for sure
the room lighting bro is sweet!
Thank you!

PLEASE USE ELECTRIC TAPE IF YOU HAVE A BATTERY
What happens if I use any other tape
@@moizshaikh2285it can ruin the battery or melt the tape
electric tape is better anyways its much thicker than painters tap and sounds much better atleast in my keyboard
there is no proof of masking tape ever causing problems with batteries. electrical tape leaves residue.
@@sorenkairmasking tape can set on fire so it’s safer not too…. Rip rk61 1.0
Very well documented video, although I do have some things to point out starting with this hobby. Perhaps the stabilizers could've been modded and tuned in order for them to have a smooth and nice feeling. There are many mods and things to help shape a better sound profile for your stabilizers such as lubing and more. Also, your switches are good sounding however I think they are slightly overpriced as you can probably get cheaper switches that feel or sound the same or perhaps even better than the Higround Titan Hearts. Switches such as the Gateron Yellows and Ink Blacks are much cheaper and are better than your switches. Again, these are suggestions only, if what you currently have makes you happy, go for it!
Thank you! I wanted to mod the stabilizers as well, but it seemed quite complicated, and I didn't want to mess it up :/. With the price of the switches, I don't know much about switches, but I like higrounds products and liked the sound of the switches. I know they were a bit pricey, but I don't mind!
@@PeytonToenjes Modding the stabilizers shouldn't be a big hassle especially for a beginner. Even for me, I have modded the stabs of my RK61 and I am still yet to experience the full rabbit hole of the keyboard hobby. I suggest watching a few tutorials and perhaps just trying. :)
Ik it's too random but is it necessary 2:28 in modding keyboards?
for almost every mod it is, yes@@KhyaTakhe
yap yap yap yap yap
this guys keyboard went from: HOLY SHIT, IM CLICKY AND LOUD to holy shit, im thocky as hell
Props to u for actually making it sound good I tried to mod my rk61 but it sounded like crap but my viewers really like it
Good thing you like thocc, the rk61 is really easy to he thoccy. simply adding a tape mod. uust 2 layers was enough to make it thoccy
I wanna mod mine, do i need everything in the video to get the sound?
yes but get stabs and also different switches if u haven't done it yet
HUGE improvement, hats off to you
you can tell a keyboard is cheap when it has 15 screws.... oh? im talking about mine-
Got me in the first half
Damn
I got the rk r65 its really nice :)
@@senseiBlue6 nice mate, ive been using an 8 dollar keyboard for almost 2 years now
@@Div1nen gaddam my old one lasted only 2 months it was membrane
Your thumbnail is sick, great video
cool, only complain i have is using higher end switches on a rk61 why get higher end switches that cost as much as the whole board when you could have just gotten a better board like gmk67 or gas68 for around 60 - 80 bucks that have more impact on the overall sound profile overall, budget switches are more than enough if your lube them correctly and could even sound better than more expansive ones. for example, akko cs switches they sound great, and the packaging could function as a lubing station.
Probably the guy wants just a 61 key keyboard instead of a 67, i couldn’t find any bare bones 61kb without being a complete rip off
Put PE foam and add some Polyfill (If it doesn't fit, just use Polyfill instead of EVA) on that bad boy and you'll get your Thock, my guy.
Nice man its really sick! Im going to do it with banna split switches and a Japanese keycaps!
whats up bro, saw your vids last night. Pretty cool that we have the same name but keep it up. A little advice though, try to have fun while you are recording, it makes the videos that much more entertaining. That said, keep up the good work!
Did the exact same thing for mine like 4 months ago. That’s crazy
W bro you should make more keyboard content i would definitely watch it 🔥🔥
titan heart switches are actually slept on
Love ur vids, recnetly watched all of them!
Thank you man, much appreciated!
i have the same keycaps with the gmk67 and ktt kang white switches, the space bar is the loudest keycap
sounds amazing! were there any tactile differences after modding?
Well the switches are linear so there isn’t tactility in them
Been into keyboards for around 2 years now, and despite what people may seem to believe how a cheap RK Keyboard can be modded into something nice it can only do so much. For the same price a lot of keyboarss can be bought that sounds amazing stock, RK has updated their keyboards as well. Kinda amazing how in a span of a year keyboards have become so cheap and so amazing, Keychron was very expensive and I regret buying them because they don't sound as great as my leobogs, or my nuphy... To someone who wants to start to get into the keyboars hobby my best cheao keyboard recommendation are the Aulas or the GMKs, try to stay away from royal kludges basic boards that didn't have a price cut
Nice video bro!
thank you!
Im thinking about buying the RK61 with these keycaps, with akko piano pro switches, ive never modded a keyboard before, and im wondering, do I need to buy stabilizers, what lube would be the best, if i need to add foam or tape, and what mousepad would look the best with it? Also awesome vid
Damm bro i wish my keyboard sounded like that may have to do the same thing.
There are defiantly better switch choices then titan hearts especially for that price range.
I'm sure there are, but personally I'm perfectly happy with the titan hearts!
Yeah, if you’re happy with them that’s all that matters.
the mods are more than the keybourd itself
Indeed
@@PeytonToenjesthose switch’s are a ripoff btw (hi ground is notoriously scammy and overpriced))(ps if your happy I’m happy)
Really nice keyboard mod!
@@Thatnewguy-ro7kg thank you!!
Nothing worse than clicky keys. Great mod. Love the silence
Video quality is top notch 👌
Love from India.
do those switches sound similar to cherry MX browns? also kinda strange but what camera equipment do you use it looks great.
I'm not sure, I've never used brown switches. I use a Canon G7x Mark ii. I'm planning on upgrading to a MUCH better DSLR camera in a few months!
@@PeytonToenjes ahh i see what DLSR where you thinkin?

@@PeytonToenjes Ahh great choice the yt videos are gonna be smooth bro
What is the prerequisite for all keycaps to work on the switch? I want to change my keycaps but I don't know where to start!
Hello! Hoping you can reply, just wondering if you have had any issues since with the masking tape with the battery in the keyboard? If not please let me know 🙏
Nope, not at all! Seems to be working just fine for me
that sounds insane at the ending
u bought same keycaps as me!, nice, i have them with the wooting 60he
Hey Peyton! newly viewer of yours. I was wondering if you could help me decide what switches to choose? I’m trying to pick either Gateron Milky Yellows (pre-lubed) or the Akko V3 Creamy Yellows. Both sound great but I’d appreciate your opinion! Thanks.
milky yellows>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I used the same stuff thank you for helping me
❤❤
I think good quality keycaps make all the difference. The Esc button seemed extra thocky compared to the others
sheesh ur editing is sick asw
i think you should switch to a gasket mounted keyboard if u want the foam to actually work
are the keycaps nice... i am thinking of buying the exact same for my razer huntsman mini
Perhaps you could go for some new stabs, the ones that came stock on my rk61 are horrid (PS: I grabbed the exact same keycaps)
Fantastic video! I ordered some keycaps, switches, and the 2 foam plates for mine today, wish me luck!
Good luck, man!

very helpful
I have a question, my mother is afraid of breaking the keyboard by removing the old switches, putting the tape, foam etc. and in the end she advises me to only put the keycaps? Can you answer me please?
I understand being scared to break a keyboard by modding it, but if your keyboards PCB is hot swappable I don't see what's stopping you. Just don't be super rough when pulling the switches out, and you'll be fine!
@@PeytonToenjes Thank you
@@PeytonToenjes Finally I think I will only put the keycaps with the brown sitches
i love those keycaps
me too
im getting this keyboard soon and im doing all the research in one night at 12 am 💀
Hopefully this video helped in a way! Goodluck with the keyboard bro :)
@@PeytonToenjes hope it does! im buying gateron milky yellows and im gonna do a tissue paper mod (its also my first mod)
hey how do you film like from above your head im planning on modding a keyboard aswell
Not sure what the difference was but when I bought my RK61 a week ago from amazon, it already came with sound dampener and foam. All I had to do was tape mod it to make it sound great
newer version
does tape mod make the spacebar not rattle? i just got mine and the spacebar is a little rattly
I have the rk61 and we had the same backlight color too
yeah i clicked here because i got the same keyboard with the same keycaps
Ik it's too random but 2:28 why did he do that, is it compulsory?
is the keyboard good without modding? i am looking for a budget gaming keyboard
in general yeah, a bit of the quality depends on what switches you choose before buying. but for the price you definitely get what you pay for, not bad but not great!
I'm confused. Didn't the foam go over the case cut out for the on an off switch?
I'm actually not sure, lol. After I modded it, the foam was slightly in the switches way, but after I used them a bit, it was fine.
Is gateron switches compatibles with royal kludge?
The rk61 has a hot-swappable PCB, which means you can basically use any switches you'd like!
dosen't the rk61 sound plasticky and scratchy in stock?
it doesn't bother you having all the function images missing on your new keycaps? that would drive me crazy.
No, f1 - f9 is on the respective numbers, and f10 is on the 0 key.
@@PeytonToenjes yeah i know, i have this keyboard. and if you switch modes your right side becomes the arrow keys. your keycaps are missing all the notation of the function buttons, like Insert, Page Up, Page Down, Home, End, etc.
I love watching videos of things that I cant be bothered to do myself
i enjoy watch the videos that i can't even dream of having what they have
Can you recommend these keycaps ?
What mouse do you have?
The Steelseries aerox 3 wireless!
Nice video!! do you have some free diy things i can buy to upgrade my rk61 sound?
hey what's the mouse that you use?
How many millimeters? Is for the Eva foam?
You Deserve more subs
is masking tape safe for keebs with battery or should u use electric tape?
If i were you i would use that money on a 100$ keeb as its prebuild is better for sure but nice vid btw
Thank you, and I'm sure you're right, but for me, the experience of modding a keyboard is better :)
@@PeytonToenjesi see 😊 i would do mods on keeb if i had a decent budget aswell but sadly not 😅
I thin if you took it a step further to lube the switches and stabilizers, i feel like you would be able to get that thocky soung you want. all in all, great video.
The Titan Heart Switches are already pre-lubed, and the stabs are meant to be prelubed, but there basically was nothing on them. Either way, I didn't feel comfortable taking them apart.
Also thank you!
it sounds so goood
But the spacebar is rattley
is it possible to replace the battery with a more powerful (and lasting) one?
put tap under the space bar 2 to 3 layers
u can take tape and put in in the space bare 4 layers it would be great
rk 61 ou gk 61? is worth buy gk 61 with yellow switches or buy rk 61 and put some yellow switches?
nice work
Bro I got the exact same key caps and put them in the same place lol😊
i would lube the switches too. if they are pre-lubed than thats just more proof at how bad higround is.
Should i buy an rk61 or a MageGee 60% mk box?
yo whats the name of your monitor???
We can put 3pin switchs in RK61 too?
the keycaps so expensive
Well you did amazing for your first time Modding the keyboard
Thank you!
it sound like my royal kuldge rk61 but with i have brown switches
what about the rgb? the keycaps arent shine through
after doing the mods i just didn't use the rgb on the keyboard since like you said the caps aren't shinethrough, but also not using the rgb makes the battery on the keyb last SO MUCH longer
@@PeytonToenjes do u maybe know any black/White keycaps that are Shine through but still Look cool Like the in Ur vids
Can you do the tempest mod with a mech keeb with a battery?
