Built out a Keychron Q1 with Alpaca switches, filmed and lubed (205g0 for stems and housing, 105 for springs), Mekanisk aquamarine screw in stabs (basically a version of durock V2's). Tape mod for the PCB and also put small strips of tape between the top and bottom half of the case. it took a long time... it was expensive, but I'm so happy with the results, just feels creamy and smooth and it sounds amazing. Full build including tools, lube and all was about 500$, but it was so worth it.

Been wanting to get into custom keyboards for a good while. After some consideration and research I have finally ordered my first set to build one myself! Excited to see how different the keyboard will sound and feel compared to the one I have now. Update; Lubing is the most tedious thing I have ever done, but the feel of the finished keyboard made it worth it. A slight rattle in the spacebar, but otherwise easily the best keyboard experience I have had to date. Not as expensive as I first thought either.
@@rishikdulipyata ordered a white GMMK 2 Barebones 65% (Nordic). Very simple, only needed switches and a keycap set that went nicely with it. A bit tedious, but following this video made it easy to put it together, the barebones comes ready to go in and of itself, the main time consumer is taking apart and lubing all the switches.
Thank you so much. I just joined this community last year and was thinking of getting a custom myself. This video is a big help. Thank you thank you so much Hipyo >
I went for the GMMK Pro with a polycarbonate plate and the Aquaking V3 switches, Durock V2 stabs (holee modded) and MT3 keycaps. And I must say I really love how this keyboard turned out, the sound and buttery smooth feel of it is absolutely amazing. It's also very stiff (which I like a lot). It came with extremely overlubed stock stabs, which is why I decided to replace them for the Durocks and maybe save them for later. Removed all the lube with some alcohol and I also applied some band aid on the PCB. The PCB itself bended a bit, because of the plate not fitting the durock stabs properly. But after assembling the board everything is perfectly fine. The metal top and bottom really keep everything properly alligned and it doesn't cause any problems at all. The only issue I have with this board is the software and specifically the RGB lighting. Both are very basic and could use some improvement.
I just built my first custom keyboard, I went with pre-lubed gateron bowns and after watching this kinda glad I did because it does not look like much fun trying to lube switches.
This might sound a little weird, but I'd like to say thanks for explaining how much work goes into these so I would learn that I really can't get into this hobby right now. The video was clear, informative, well-presented, and entertaining, don't get me wrong, the problem is entirely on me. Between working a full time job and going to school, I quite simply do not have the time, energy, or patience to spend that much money on tools and supplies to build a board from scratch. (Not to mention that I have no idea where I'd find space to do this, between tiny house, clutter, and pets getting into everything.) I don't do small, fiddly work all that well and if I didn't have a dog eat an escaping spring I'd count it as a miracle. So yeah. Great vid, I loved it, I even subscribed to your channel because I find them entertaining to watch, but holy hell, I am never going to actually build one of these.

Thing is, I already know all these terms and the overall steps; the part I am having trouble with is selecting parts which I know will be compatible. What chassis work with what PCBs? How do you make sure your plate will match up with the pcb? I know it's not solely the board size, because there are lots of different layouts. Also there's always so much pressure to buy stuff because of the group buy nature of small-run custom boards. It make my head hurty

That looks like a lot of work.. My good that sounds smooth!! Maybe I will try to build a keyboard in the future. I just got my new prebuild yesterday, but hey who says a man only can have one keyboard right?!

HAHAHA!) ! I thought I was the only one that had some weird obsession with "the feel of the keyboard" (according to the wide eyed, tight lipped expression my husband gave me in Best Buy 32 minutes into my rant about butterfly keyboards on apple laptops) but its so nice to know that not only am I NOT the only one with the weird obsession (take that husband!) but I can escape this madness and get myself a real keyboard with some freaking weight to their keys! Oh my bank account is going to hate me. :) I hit subscribe. I look forward to the diss track. can I request a diss track about The Mistake that is apple butterfly keyboards. I have some.... feelings.... i'd like to hear fully expressed by someone that's not me so I feel less alone in the world.
This guy is terrifyingly good at guessing what I’m feeling, I was about to say something about the numpad, and then I got bored right as he said I was getting bored…
Thanks for your videos. The showed me the actual state of intelligence of the cool keyboard modding community. Instead of doing something useful on their own, they feel themselves as great engineers by spending money on useless stuff as switches and fancy key caps and pretending to improve working keyboards by changing switches and brush them with lube. This is just ridiculous. I think I'm too old for this. But beside of that, you are doing a great job with your videos.
My girlfriend understood that I'm getting into the hobby of mech keyboards and have no idea where to start. She jus told me, "tell me all the parts and whatever else you need and I'll buy them for you for your bday." I have no idea where to start, but watching this video really helps, thanks Hipyo
What I am really looking for is a way to customize the keys themselves because I am building a keyboard for a specific job in a specific industry. For example, I want to be able to hit a key on my keyboard and have all the letter and numbers switch around based on what i am doing.
Lmao - bought all my components a few days before watching this video, and even when its a joke -- I am so happy I got the 75% layout, and you made the joke that 75% is the only right answer for layout - when I was struggling with this decision for my first barebones keyboard... I currently use a 100% Red Dragon pre-built mechanical keyboard and the thought of living without my numpad is pain - but I see people buy separate numpads in this community... I was surprised to find the fondness to smaller layouts in the mechanical keyboard community. Also the stark lack of full keysets for a 100% or even 96% layout! Feels like a whole new world and can not wait to try out more switches, modding stabs and lubing switches ! Thanks for the entertainment :)
After watching several of your videos, which are generally well presented, I've come to the conclusion that what most people interpret as "BUDGET" and what you understand it means is vastly different. Just because you can buy a buy a Lamborghini for several millions doesn't mean a Porsche for a few hundred thousand is a "budget" car.
Already got the Akko red and blue samurai keycap set, only thing left is to buy a pack of 110 switches for around $20 of novelkey mystery switches and a Gmmk pro with PC plate.
I'm on the first 3 mins of this video but ngl it's so entertaining to watch. + Truly informative + Great tips for a newbie like me hihi thank you kind person!! 😊🙌🏻
finally built my first keeb, its a pla 3d printed case, split ergo board (redox handwire) with vaseline lubed cherry mx reds. the "plate" is the top housing of the case and it has no pcb. cant type on it at all since i dont know how to touchtype and keys which should be on the right side like b are on the left. 10/10
I think the holee mod is worth is because it made the stabilizer keys sound better and completely changes how they fell. Now all I have to do is wait for my lube kit and dialectic greese to arrive to I can fully upgrade my keyboard

I hit subscribe. I look forward to the diss track. can I request a diss track about The Mistake that is apple butterfly keyboards. I have some.... feelings.... i'd like to hear fully expressed by someone that's not me so I feel less alone in the world.
That Hipyo noise is just *muah* chef's kiss
What about an "as quiet as possible" keyboard? What do I need to know for that? Or if I want to add like 15 extra buttons as well as function keys?
I really enjoy your narration and humor. You kept my attention the whole video. That’s hard to do!
0:13 i want that keyboard
I’m glad you made this, but you posted it literally the week after I built mine! Good work tho hipyo! Love the vid!
When he clarified lube as "switch lube" ...I feel like that didn't really make it any better
I don’t think this comment made it better
This guy is terrifyingly good at guessing what I’m feeling, I was about to say something about the numpad, and then I got bored right as he said I was getting bored…
Thanks for your videos. The showed me the actual state of intelligence of the cool keyboard modding community. Instead of doing something useful on their own, they feel themselves as great engineers by spending money on useless stuff as switches and fancy key caps and pretending to improve working keyboards by changing switches and brush them with lube. This is just ridiculous. I think I'm too old for this.
But beside of that, you are doing a great job with your videos.
I literally decided to make a custom keyboard yesterday. This video is a Godsend
I hate premieres
Shut up let utubers do what they like

I am one of the four wondering about the number pad. I just can't live without it.
My girlfriend understood that I'm getting into the hobby of mech keyboards and have no idea where to start. She jus told me, "tell me all the parts and whatever else you need and I'll buy them for you for your bday." I have no idea where to start, but watching this video really helps, thanks Hipyo
THE FOUR OF US KEYPAD ENJOYERS... RISE UP
How much love can one person put into a video about keyboards? The answer is Yes.
Duuuude! I loved the video ❤️
I want to get into custom keyboards so ty for making this
This is the video I was looking for. Thanks!
I'm just now getting into this. So planning on starting with a cheapie with hot swappable switches and see how slowly replacing everything goes.
What I am really looking for is a way to customize the keys themselves because I am building a keyboard for a specific job in a specific industry.
For example, I want to be able to hit a key on my keyboard and have all the letter and numbers switch around based on what i am doing.
Will be coming back to this video once my space65 comes in. This will be my first actual build since my tofu came pre assembled
thumbs up, no one hates this man! no dislikes since watching ur vids
"How do you do it, switches keys aaaaah" - that's EXACTLY how I was feeling before your video :') thank you so much
of course you upload this the day after I built my first keyboard
Me: cool a keyboard video
Hipyo: this video starts with 50landing
Me: 0.o I love 50landing!
Just build my first keyboard.GMMK pro with gateron clears and aura keycaps. Was a pain to lube them but all your videos really helped!
HES BACK
who knew a video about keyboards could be so hilarious 😂
Came for the offhand interest in building a keyboard in far far future the algorithm gave me, stayed for the wonderful transition music
Already got the Akko red and blue samurai keycap set, only thing left is to buy a pack of 110 switches for around $20 of novelkey mystery switches and a Gmmk pro with PC plate.
im getting my first custom soon im using a gmmk and milky yellows and this video has helped allot
Well i am proud to be one of the four who are typing about the number pad...
Quick tip, if you end up doing the holee mod, unless you like mushy stabs, you can try using clear tape
I wish this video was here when I started the hobby it would of had made it so much easier for me.
that sounded great at the end... I'll bet whoever this build was for liked it...
10/10
I love that the discussion about lube included a little hair on one of the switches 😉😏
omg i'm a huge fan of 50 landing too!! i didn't know you liked his music
I actually will be building my first keyboard soon so this will come in handy
same
Howdy hey, tysm for this video, I will probably take notes the next time I come back to make plans for my dream keyboard!
I think the holee mod is worth is because it made the stabilizer keys sound better and completely changes how they fell. Now all I have to do is wait for my lube kit and dialectic greese to arrive to I can fully upgrade my keyboard
Me yesterday spending 2 hours deep cleaning everything on my normal market mechanical keyboard and thinking "this is so enjoyable, I always liked those beautiful custom keyboard, someday I might get into that"
and then this appear today
welp... subscribed
