- After looking at other options for a bed lift, and being unsatisfied with my choices of kits to purchase, I decided to make my own. This saved me about $400! I want to be able to put gear, bikes, or a motorcycle under my bed. For maximum flexibility, I wanted it to move completely out of the way, rather than just tip up to reveal storage. The bed floats on cables. The cables can be cranked in, which causes the bed to ride up them. The cable crank has a braking mechanism, so it locks in any position automatically.

You may want to drill holes in the plywood base to allow air flow on the underside of the mattress to prevent mold.
Hopes or I bought stuff from sailing supplier that resembles artificial turf with breathable membrane which is supposed to allow it to breath.
Holes are cheaper.
He can accomplish that by laying 1"x4" slats under the mattress, spaced a couple of inches apart.

Love the clean look of those crimped cables. I also like that there are no nuts to come loose as you drive down the road.
I like the cable idea. Seems more robust that the straps I've seen in other designs. The wall runners are also neat.
Cool! I did something similar in my bus using 4 pneumatic cylinders. I'm actually sitting at my desk under it at the moment :). But I had to go through a lot of hoops to make that go and down up evenly - one way valves and pressure reducers plus the solenoids - etc.. I like your design a lot. Mine's not 'man powered' but it does run off solar!! Thanks for posting the video good stuff.

Shorten your four individual cables (cos you never want the bed all the way down to the floor, THEN it will winch closer to the roof!
@2:17 For future reference, that's a "center punch". There are manual(hammer operated) and automatic(spring triggered) versions but they both do the same thing, create a little dimple for your pilot drill :)
I think his had a dimple on the end which would make that a finish mail set to drive a headless finish mail under the wood surface to allow wood putty on top.
Punch would have pointy end.

To add height when cranking, instead of coming straight from the 4 pulleys to the crank, go at an angle from the pulleys toward the shower side, then run through a hole there to a pulley on the outside, and run back down to the crank. That should increase the length of the run of the single cable from the junction of the 4 cables.

I was thinking the same. They’d be quieter and smoother when winching and not rattle when you get in and out of bed.
I’d put stop pins for the minimum hight so the mechanism isn’t under tension when the beds in use, the same stop pins could be moved to the top when it’s stowed. I’m also not keen on self tapping screws as I’ve had a few work loose in my work van. I’d probably use dome head (square shank) stainless steel bolts and bolt though the body and the uprights from the outside. I used the same method when connecting studs to the walls inside of my shipping container shed where a knew there was gonna be something heavy hanging from it.

If you moved the winch mount closer to one of the corners of the bed, it would make your cable longer and have more room to raise up. Just and idea.
So when you go to sleep at a Walmart, where does the stuff you have to take out of the way go to? Love the idea. Also, the link provided for pulleys is different from what you use here or did you fabricate the double pulleys? Good explaining as you go along. Some more close ups inside would help more, but think I've got it. Thank you for posting this!
You might want to add a metal sleeve in that bigger hole you made by the crank so as not yp wear wood away.

Hey--a DIY bed lift that actually works! Could also use a 12 v power winch with a back-up hand crank when power isn't available. Would like to have seen a diagram of pully cable threading.
Not much on technical descriptions but hey, it works.
you can separate the four wheels for more distance the will gives you more what you need

Thanks for sharing, your video gave me an idea how to do my platform/living room lift :) but maaan, its not easy to adjust it just right especially with electric winch attached to it and being scared that around 70 kg or over will land on your head 😂
If you use bottle screws to connect the 4 separate cables to the single one it would be fine tuneable from left to right and front to back. They’re more than strong enough for this type of application. I doubt the max weight is more than 660lbs including 2 people and I’d add stop pins to rest the bed on when in use to stop the mechanism from being under stress and creaking in use.

Looks great! My husband and I are planning to do something similar in our van, possibly with a motor though. Do you notice the noise coming mostly from the crank, or is it the railing? Any ideas/plans to minimize that?
A little bit of grease goes a long way - Sounded like there were 2 different sounds, one from the crank and one from on the rails.

I checked your build specs. In my opinion, you spent in excess of $600. You could have bought a complete garage lift kit for less than $300. Add another $100 for misc. parts. Admirable but, not frugal. Could have used a Marine 12V winch for about $70 additional.
Very nice project. Thanks for making and sharing the video. I would trade the crank handle for a hex nut though. It would look nicer and then you could use a cordless drill and socket to do all the work of lifting/lowering the bed. BTW... the "little doo-dad" at 2:22 is called a punch, or nail setter. 👍
What is the brand of the pulley
The tracks are extra large. Is a pull system really necessary? I'm thinking just having stoppers then lift the system with myself.

I love it. I've taken several naps on it. I like it more than my home mattress.
He could’ve just moved the winch to the foot end of the bed and that would’ve given him enough diagonal length to get the bed up to the ceiling. The added advantage would be that the winch would be out of the way when getting in and out of the bed.
4 bottle screws connected to the 4 eye bolts would allow for the bed to be levelled when parked on a slope.
maybe you would put a beam from the winch to the other side. the force tries to pull the bed frame together.
How many times have you gotten up in the middle of the night when nature calls and cursed the hand crank gears? Other than that good concept.
If they do a 6-8” mattress, the height will be above the gears, no problem. I think you’re more likely to curse when you hit that handle every time!
I give you 80 out of 100 for your effort and more importantly not given up, but I thing I have seen better ideas in other videos.
Why mount the winch where you have to crawl over it to get in bed? Off to the side would have made more sense. And if your cables pulled more parallel to the tracks and some grease on the pulley axles would make it a lot quieter. Lastly why eye bolts at the top when a bolt and fender washers through the cable eyes would be stronger over time?
how do you down the bed?. when you changes the direction of the crank. the weight of the bed it don't get down quickly the base. how do you control get down the bed? . . . sorry I don´t have much english.
The crank has a brake. Wherever you stop cranking is where it stops and holds. It works both directions.

I still love it. It is super strong and convenient. Being able to lift it has come in handy a few times, but it usually sits in the low position, because that's the easiest position to sleep on it. It makes storage much easier, though. I added tie-downs so it doesn't bounce while in motion, and drilled some more holes in a couple of positions so that the bed could rest on the rails at various heights. I've seen some variations inspired by this bed in other rigs, with some improvements, since I published this video. The best I saw was a version where somebody repositioned the corner pulleys so they were hidden under the bed. It made the bed platform a lower profile, helped it sit lower in the down position, and keeps the cables out of the way. I also saw somebody use an electric winch, instead of a hand crank. I thought about doing that, but I kind of like the analog feel of man power. Nothing more off-grid than a man-powered mechanical solution! If I ever change my mind about that, it would be a pretty simple upgrade, though. As far as cost, I'm happy with it. It's cheaper and stronger than some of the kits I've seen for RVs, and it's built for the space. If I could change anything, I probably would weld a metal platform together and use smaller pulleys to lower the profile of the platform. But, that would also be much more expensive. The tie-downs are also a must-do, as you can see in my bed lift follow-up video.
Do those unistrut trollies rattle when going down the road?
They do not. I really hate rattling and squeaking, so I would have definitely noticed.
how did you keep the cable on the bottom pullies from coming off the pully as they are not captured?
The weight of the bed and having the bed strapped down keeps the cables on the pulleys. The straps were added later, and aren't covered in this video.

Rope will wear out and snap often. Not safe.

The vehicle you’re installing in, no concern for GVW issues/ materials seem like they are maybe as heavy as you could have found. Certainly durable, but gas, breaks, suspension busters.

Ignore the assholes with their negative comments! I think that people don’t realize that most of the “kit” elevator beds require power. I think you came up with a pretty good plan that requires no electricity. I am looking for a solution to creating an elevator bed (manual powered). The spacing is different from yours, and I don’t know how to overcome that. I want to use a full-size bed, not across, but length-wise, in the center of an 8-foot wide trailer. I am hoping for space to move on each side of the bed while it is in the down position. I contacted Rocky Mountain Tiny Homes to request help (which I am willing to pay for), and Greg said no. Not just no, but basically no way. How do these companies function with such shitty customer service? I know what I want is do-able, but I can’t seem to work it out. I am disabled, want a decent place to live, but that pesky bit of massive brain damage gets in the way of me figuring out the mechanics.
2 reasons I can think of why he may have said "No". First, depending on what your interior wall covering material is, your walls in a wood frame built home are going to be at least 4" thick each, so interior width on an 8' wide home is 88" or less. This means you'll have less than 3' total clearance alongside the bed lengthwise. Divide that by 2 sides of the bed and that's only about 17" on each side. But the bigger problem is how do you anchor your platform lift framework??? It needs to be secured to the walls for stability, so if it's built in the middle of the room, how would you anchor it? And if you do anchor it to the studs as needed, and just use a very wide platform for the mattress, when it is lowered, you'd have no way to step around it, without stepping up, onto the platform and walking across the platform itself, then down to the floor, but the lift brackets protrude about 2", so now you're down to 15" clearance on each side of the mattress. Enough for storage space but not really for walking, unless you just walk on one side (30").
That's gotta make noise when driving. THis seems a cumbersome but cheap solution. If you want to spend money on this concept you're far better off with a happijac system but that's way more expensive.
At $100 for each plus shipping for just the tracks I don’t think I wouldn’t call this cheap. Seems quite study though. The tracks and trolleys are really designed for the loads to be on a different plane though.
It’s a very cool design, but unless you really need to adjust the bed height in 1/32” increments or whatever the ratchet mechanism provides, this is likely overkill cost wise.

Im concerned about the tension you’re putting on the front and rear beams. The winch and pulleys are pulling the center of the beams together and only the frame top is resisting. You should add a front to back beam to resist this compression. Also, you’d get more height if you relocated your eye bolts on the pillars higher or made the location that they enter into the frame lower. At the top of the travel, the angle of the cable is almost horizontal, so it require much more force to continue upward.
