  • Thanks for tuning in and thanks to all of those who have subscribed, commented and are following along. It is appreciated. In this video I will finish up the base of the camper by finishing the pass-through to the Tacoma and the 4 other anchor points. Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions on my build. Stay safe out there. TbT #diycamper #FourWheelCampers #Tacomacamper

    You realize the cab and box move about separately. A commercially available tube to provide a seal between the two my end up being a better approach than the foam strip of insulation. You'll want to keep an eye on that. Sorry, you know how picky viewers can be! Nice job.

    Wait...so they are going to be solid walls and NOT canvas???? This build just keeps getting better. Can't wait to see it! Waiting another month is going to be torture! LOL!

    • @TravelingbyTacoma
      @TravelingbyTacoma  Год назад +4

      Yep, that’s the plan. I think I have it worked out and it’s going to work out well. We have a rooftop tent already so I wasn’t excited about more flapping fabric and loss of heat…plus canvas ain’t keeping Sasquatch out. Lol. Thanks for following along and commenting. Much appreciated. TbT.

    Id be careful of the pressure on the rear truck window with the flex and bed movement.
    You could use pvc or aluminum pipe for a softener at those corners for the rachet strap. Find the proper radius and cut 1/3 of the circumference of the pipe and it will work well as and edge protector.
    You could also use rubber belting. (These are just ideas incase you dont have a solution yourself)
    This thing looks great! Subscribed and looking forward to following the rest of the build

    • @TravelingbyTacoma
      @TravelingbyTacoma  Год назад +1

      Thanks. I took off the foam from the pass through and there is about. 1” gap between the window and the camper. I’m going to use a soft rubber gasket around it instead of the foam becomes of what you mentioned. Don’t want to explode my back window. 😬. I used a heave 2 in wide piece of rubber in that area to keep it from chafing seems to be a good solid and easy solution so far. I’ll that in an upcoming episode. Thanks for the sub it’s appreciated. Yes, Very nicely considered. I'm vert curious about how well the nails serve to hold it together. I realize most of the structural connections are made using nuts and bolts but with the amount of vibration anything going down a road is subject to, I just wonder about that. Great work and a very well thought through construction it seems. Youre probaably wondering how the tie-down straps will work. Me too. Keep us posted! Thanks.

    • @TravelingbyTacoma
      @TravelingbyTacoma  Год назад

      The nails are to hold it together when fabricating. All of the connections have wood glue and 3.5” wood screws holding them together as well. The L metal on all the edges will tie it together more also. Should be plenty strong. I’m
      Not taking it on the rubicon trail lol just forest and desert roads.

    Just found this, brilliant. Like the way you’ve thought the engineering problems out. Here in England not many units like this about and was about to start a build like this myself and was going down the same thinking as yourself with regards to the pop up element of the roof with hard walls rather than material. Also was thinking of finishing outside with fibreglass or black aluminium checker plate for waterproofing and appearance . Keep up the good work and looking forward to your next video. Colin

    • @TravelingbyTacoma
      @TravelingbyTacoma  Год назад +1

      Thanks! I think the insulated hard walls is going to be a good thing. So far so good on making them work and the weight isn’t too bad. Top cap is built and I’m waiting for the lift struts to be delivered this week. That’s the last prince of the puzzle as far as the outside goes. Im going to paint the side walls with marine grade polyurethane paint and the roof will be covered with Filon from an RV supply. Good luck with your build and thanks for commenting and watching. Cheers. TbT.

    Great build so far and keeping it light you wouldn"t even know its behind you . The Pass through might be a problem as your cab and box will shift and slide I did the same thing you did with foam and my dad told me to use a Mini bike tire instead of having it so close to window as it allows more travel and wont break back window
    take Care looking forward to next part

    The front has the bracket to bolt against the truck, do you think the back will slide side to side if you take turns?

    • @TravelingbyTacoma
      @TravelingbyTacoma  Год назад

      No, the camper will have back heavy duty ratchet straps and the camper is super snug in there. I also added 2 more front straps for a total of 6 connections to the truck. The base of the bed is ribbed as well and with the addition of the skids on the bottom of the camper they kind of lock in together. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.

    • @TravelingbyTacoma

      I’m going to use Interlux marine paint for boats. I’ll use their wood sealer first then primer and finally polyurethane topcoat paint. It’s good (but expensive) paint. I’ve used it in the past and it’s pretty great stuff. The black bottom paint is just a basic exterior paint nothing special.

    What do you estimate this campers total weight will be when finished?

    • @TravelingbyTacoma
      @TravelingbyTacoma  Год назад +1

      Right now its about 275/300 pounds with my best lifting it guestimate. I hope to be about 550lbs or less (dry weight) when done. I will weigh my truck empty for the base starting weight of the truck, then again with it on the truck and no interior build out and again after I build the interior. This way I will know how much weight I can add on the interior build (cabinets, storage, water tanks, etc.) and not get too heavy. I'll add all of that to a future video(s).
