You are deeply and inspiringly obsessed. I love it. Thanks for sharing.Cannot understand your reasoning for painting all the aluminum, as it's mostly inert. Your work is amazing.
Thanks. Just painted for looks. It looks way better black than raw. Raw would look janky and unfinished to me. 🤙🏼
that is the coolest camper shell ever
Thanks !
Now you have to take it out for an epic camping trip...🙂
It’s already planned 🤗 😉👍🏻. Thanks for watching and commenting. It’s appreciated. TbT
You should be proud of your achievement. Well thought out design, economical use of materials and you've managed to produce an aesthetically pleasing product.. Thank you for sharing your journey. Cheers from OZ
Thanks mate! I am and we're having fun with it. I'm working on a few additions so hopefully have a video on those out soon-ish as well. Are you a motocross/dirtbike fan (@cyclemoto) ?
@@TravelingbyTacoma Indeed, long term road and dirt moto rider in addition to 4x4, well spotted! Would love to see a long term review of the camper including the type of terrain it was taken on. I'm not sure if I overlooked it but it appeared as though you didn't add any rubber seals to the door? Thanks for your response. Cheers
Cool, I’ll probably do a 1 year review when that comes it’s been on my truck about 6 months now and so far so good. I average about 18mpg. The door and roof are well sealed with neoprene rubber weather seals and have many miles on dusty road and not much dust intrusion if any. I grew up riding and racing moto in SoCal -I’m 50- . Don’t ride anymore, but haven’t missed a supercross or outdoor race in 20 years. Your boys (Jet and Hunter) are great for the sport, congrats. Poor Reedy, the old 22 must be so butt hurt those young ozzy’s are out doing him. 😂 I was always a Reed fan, but he’s kinda got an ego, Kenny 94 is my guy. Looking forward to the 2024 season, gonna be a good one. 🤙🏼
The camper looks great. Nice job. Very well done. Goes well on your truck.
Thank you, much appreciated. TbT
Looks great. Personally I would put large windows on each side.
Thanks. Maybe, but I’m 6’5 and you can’t be in it when the top is down. If I had eyes on my knees maybe. 😂😂😂. You’ll see when and if you watch the interior build out why there are no side windows. Thanks for watching and commenting, it’s appreciated. TbT
Great job keeping it light. 500lbs is impressive.
Thanks!
I’ve been hesitating on building one out of ply but that paint job convinced me. Looks mint
Thanks. It’s holding up well. Use good plywood and don’t leave anything unsealed or unpainted, water will find it. Mines holding up well and I’m pretty happy with the results and feel good about its longevity. It will require maintenance as any painted surface will of course, but that’s part of the fun. Good luck and thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
@@TravelingbyTacoma appreciate it. Started building one last week so your videos have been super helpful. Did you use a metal flashing on the underside that sits on the bed rail then goes down towards the wheel well?
Cool. No no metal on the tub part on mine. Just a lot of glue and screws and sealed the seams as best as possible. Then I painted it will a few thick layers of heavy duty exterior water resistant black paint. It really doesn’t get too much exposure under there. Good luck. Hope that helps.
Looks great! One of the best builds that I’ve seen. Not to critique, but the only thing I would change is to cut the front and back fold up walls in half, hinge them, and permanently attach to the roof. This would stabilize the roof when you pop it up, like a 4 wheel camper. I look forward to seeing what you did on the inside. Bravo! 👏
Thanks for watching and commenting. I’m happy with the current setup. Good suggestion though. TbT
Tidy as! good on you for having a go at making something! Cheers from Australia
Thanks mate. 🤙🏼
Well I have to say that's an excellent job I can't wait to see the inside. I watched all of the builds back to back and now like I said I can't wait to see how you finish the inside. Good job!

I've just watched this entire series and its very educational and inspiring. Thank you. I am shocked that this ended up around 500lbs, and for ⅕ the cost of the cheapest comparable unfinished campers available, just unbelievable.
Thanks for watching all the episodes, glad you liked them. I’m basically done with the interior now and looking forward to weighing it again completed. I’ll put the completed weight in a future episode. New episode on the interior should be out this weekend. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
Thank you. Well done.

Awesome job. Consider flipping your gas struts so they won’t be as likely to rust.
Thanks… Yeah. I flipped them spacing issues. They’re like $28 bucks a pair so if they start to fail I’ll replace them. Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching and commenting. TbT

Misfits playlist eh? I dig it! Thanks for the great build series. Totally gonna build a similar design for my F-150. I really appreciate that you've shared this project. Cheers!
Haha. Yeah, I’m kind of stuck in my music from when I was 18 lol. Music is shit these days, I feel sorry for my kids. Hope your build goes well and my series helps you plan out your design. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.

I absolutely love this thing. Light weight, low wind resistance and beautiful! You certainly have a right to be proud. I'm not going to tell you how far off I was on my guess at the weight. BTW I thought the corner stabilizers were genius!

@@TravelingbyTacoma awesome build...nice job man.Question about your small ''boat'' style windows...when you open it does it stay open in place or you need to hook it up???
They stay open but they open to the inside fyi. The hinges are stiff and will hold up the window when open. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
Hi TBT, I have to say you did an INCREDIBLE Job!!! I watched many of these truck cap popup/campers, some good, some so so. I have to say this is one of the best builds! Kudos to you. You stated you may make a layout & share. That would be GREAT and I think all your subs would like that as well. Just putting in my 2 cents & giving you an idea to help build your channel. If you share the layout & material list in a link, you should have people like & share your channel first to get it & help build channel. Questions: 1) Do any bees or bugs build a nest or enter in between the top and sides? 2) I'm in NJ & here sometimes we get heavy snows, can the roof have a foot of snow do you know? 3) Are you thinking of putting in a vent on roof or if you put in bigger windows as you talked about on sides that would help pull air up and through. Isn't it hot inside even though it is Insulated? Thanks for all the sharing & really enjoyed your work! ENJOY!
Thanks for the nice comments. I’m not sure when or if I’ll put out design plans. I’d like to get some trips under my belt and work out any issues before I’d officially recommend my design to anyone. This is a work in progress and engineering as you go type of build…which is the most fun by the way. So far no bug issues. I tried to weatherstrip any were there was a gap for water most importantly and secondly mosquitoes. I’m close to being done with At process and I’ll have some more views of what I did in later videos. We may add a larger window and a roof vent at some point too for more ventilation. I’ve spent a lot of time in there building out the inside and it’s pretty nice with both windows open now. Still, we’ll do some test runs this summer and work out the bugs. Thanks for watching, following along and commenting. TbT
Nice one. Although your total weight is correct, the weight of the camper is more than 500. You forgot to the tail gate and other things you took off after first weighing!
Not sure I follow. The truck was weighed without the tailgate and other components I removed and then weighed again with the camper. The difference is the camper weight. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
Awesome 👍
Thanks 🤙🏼
Wow that's looking really good, the boat paint and contrasting trim does the trick, nice work and only a taste over 500 lbs...with drama & suspense too. I guess the latest Calif weather has tested it for water leaks. The interior should go fast if you're keeping it minimal, then onto camping!
Thanks. Yes, so far so good on the weather/leak testing. I was happy with the weight. The interior came out super good, I cant wait to show that off. Probably episode 13, I have some other stuff for episode 12. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
@@TravelingbyTacoma episode 12...June? "other stuff"
episode 13....July? "interior"
episode 14....Aug? camping
or maybe a little sooner since it's already done, after all..."I can't wait to show that off" the suspense of it all...😬 queue the drama music
I know, I know, I've too much time on my hands to type all that out, but this is the best build on youtube, can't wait to see what you can't wait to show off.
Haha. I have a real job and all that so usually it’s a once a month thing. Glad you’re liking the series. ✌🏻🍻
@@TravelingbyTacoma Aarrrgh!🫤
😂
Instead of the canvas corner holders, I think you could have done shocks on the two sides and that would have kept it stable and lifted it even easier? I think. What do you think?
I thought about that approach, but with the. All joint there is still too much movement front to back the would need to be some type of ridged riser. The canvas works well. Im still open to another approach that would eliminate them though. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
I guessed 500 pounds. Nice build!
Good guess. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
Hi buddy ..I'm almost watching every your video of building this Camper . Thanks. Responded to your other comment. 🤙🏼
@@TravelingbyTacoma Ok.. Thx buddy ..no prob. enjoy your Camper. 🤙🍁🚚 🌿👏
is it necessary for the upper area to sit on the bed rails? I would like to do about the same thing but go straight up the inside of the bed walls.
I do love that camper. Thank you
I don’t think it’s necessary, but I’m not an engineer so whatever you decide. The majority of the camper weight sits in/on the bed floor for my camper and not much support out of the bed sides. It actually doesn’t touch the top of the bed sides, but I put some hard rubber spacers in there for some stability. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Really helpful. Thanks.
Why did you go for an expandable top and not a fixed high roof?
I’m 6’4+ so a fixed high roof would way too tall to drive with and have any fuel economy. The pop up roof allows me to stand comfortably when popped up. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
Sweet
Thanks!
560 pounds👍👍
Good guess. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nice build Jason! I like the way you sealed the gaps on the pop up walls. I haven't done that part on mine yet. Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks! I’m getting close…a few more weeks and It’ll been done. Hope your build is going well.
It's going well but lately, I've been too busy. The camper had been taking a back seat. I started doing the inside: bed, table, storage. Will be sealing the roof very soon with a Raptor truck bed liner... Cruising my fingers on that. Cheers!
I hear yeah. It’s a long road, but I’ve enjoyed the process. 🍻
I have also. Very much so actually. Thanks to you. I bought 4 Rieco-Titan jacks. Not cheap! Solar system it the works as well.
Nice. Yes, my final part of the camper is the electrical part. I’m goi g to start basic (battery for running a fridge and lights) then figure out the solar charger part later (sooner than later probably). But I’m a carpenter at heart and having trouble wrapping my head around the electrical part. Leaving it to the end will help me focus…I hope.
I love what you did. Looks great. One point I think it's missed is that passengers also count towards payload. Not sure if you were in the truck when you weighed it.
Thanks! I’m aware people are part of the payload calc. We should be under GVWR when fully loaded still. I’ve upgraded by suspension and got E load rated tires for the added weight. It’s been in there for over a month and so far so good. Lost a few MPG’s (about 3 we average 18mpgs currently) My buddies 4wheel camper is close to 1400lbs on his taco so I’m no too worried about mine. No way I’ll be that heavy…but if we are, we can go on a diet. 😂😂Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
@@TravelingbyTacoma Yeah, I'm not the payload police. You'll be fine. I was gonna suggest Airlift 1000 bags. I used those on my overloaded truck once upon a time. 😁
Haha thanks. I’m going to see how the upgraded leafs and e rated tires do and if it seems kind off, I’ll look into the airbags. Thanks for the suggestion. TbT
Have you done the evaluation using foam boards with fiber glass sheet as the outer shell? I am still debating which route to go.
No, sorry. I used what I know...wood, screws and wood glue. So far its all holding up really well. No leaks, no cracks and several thousand miles and many nights using the camper. I've seen the material you're referencing and it looks like a great option as well. Good luck and thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
How did you attach the 8x22 steel plate to the 2x2 angle on the lift mech. Also what thickness plate did you use. I have the same lifts.
I just drilled 3 holes in them and bolted the steal plate to them. The plate is actually (just measured 22x 6 and 3/16 plate steel) I’m
Sure this voids any warranty for the lifts and may change their lift capacity so do all this at your own risk. Easier solution is build your camper wider (like I should have done lol. Good luck. DM me on insta if you want a pic.
Bad ass
Thanks!
looking good! excellent work. Hard to tell from the video but is there weather stripping or some kind of seal to keep dust and moisture out while driving and the pop-up is closed?
Thanks. Yeas there is some around the front of the roof that wraps around the sides to create a seal when closed. That’s still something I’m working out. Driven in the rain a few times so far and no leaks yet, but haven’t been out in the dirt yet and dust is sneaky. Part of the process, I’ll make it work either way. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
Top notch build series. I’ve been watching since the beginning. I started my camper and have completed the tub . I’m struggling with what overall width to go with. I’m using the same brophy jacks. I want it wide enough to be able to clear the jacks but narrow as possible. I came up with 72” wide but it looks like you were able to go only as wide as the top of the truck bed . Are you able to clear the jacks at that width?
Haha, yes I forgot to mention that in my video. I actually added 2 pieces of steel plate about 9 x 28” long to the Jack plate. I it helps but still not wide enough to drive under and drop the camper on the truck. The platform I built helps with sliding it in as well as the aluminum roller tubes. Not perfect and I would have made it wider if I thought that far ahead 🤷🏼♂️. I don’t plan on taking it off and on too much so it not a huge concern. Good luck with yours and thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
Great job! Any chance you'll share the dimensions? I'm interested in the length/width of the fold down sides.
Thanks ! The length of the camper is 8’ and the fold up sides are about 24” tall. Interior height when up is 6’4+. I may draw up a plan when I’m done and share it. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
Hey bud, where did you get the lifts to lift the camper up?
www.etrailer.com/Camper-Jacks/Brophy/CJ31.html?feed=npn&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwyJqzBhBaEiwAWDRJVGPZhjUR8iTzmkotB43n0cHG4hW8GHQMmKlWapiZSAAs5Y0iREBgSRoCuF0QAvD_BwE
Without an interior build out - I guess a bit high at 600 lbs. That's pretty darn light for an insulated hard side truck camper.
Not a bad guess though, since a 4wheel brand camper can weigh up to 1500lbs complete. Interior is almost done as well. Came out great,
I’m pretty excited. Thanks for watching, guessing and commenting. TbT
Very nice!!! But I have to ask, how are those trim screws holding? It seems they were installed and removed so many times I'm wondering if they are still holding well, or did you add some caulking or sealant to help them stay in.
Yep each screw has some sealant in each hole, a bunch behind the edge aluminum and then all the edges sealed again. They’re wood screws so if you don’t over tighten them they’re fine to take in and out a few times. Any that weren’t or spun got replaced with the same screw type 1/4 in longer. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
When you said you spent a year ... on the exterior ... 😱👀
Basically a year for the whole build - I have a full time job too. Could probably build it in 4 months if I was retired. I always walked away when I got tired or frustrated to make sure it was done right. Also didn’t do much work over thanksgiving/xmas that year too. 🤙🏼
@TravelingbyTacoma encouraging. I've been trying to build up the courage to do my own build for my diesel Canyon long bed, but am worried I don't have the mental fortitude/interest to keep it going to fruition.
By the way -- the BEST build series I've ever seen. Extremely well done 💯
Thanks, much appreciated. Yes it’s a full on commitment, but if you don’t have a time crunch and can’t afford a 4wheel camper like me… it’s a great project. I have a desk job now basically (used to build houses) and it was the best escape, creative outlet and fun to get to use my hands again for something I was passionate about. It’s been done, there are 3-4 other people out there that built camper off my design and sent me pics. Super cool. Good luck. Thanks again. 👍🏻
Incredible job! Cost?
Thanks! Right around $5k. Would have been less, but paid a professional to make the cushions which I’ll show in a walk around video soon. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
Do you have any dimensions I can access that isn't a task for you? I have the exact same model as you and you've inspired me. I'm a fabricator though so I'm using 1" aluminum square tube and it would be *SO AWESOME* to have the numbers and not waste any aluminum. It's not cheap.
I'd be totally open to subbing to a patreon or something too if you want to go that route!!
Thanks. I don’t have any extensive plans for dims yet. I may draw something up when I’m 100% done and make them available. A few tips from my build: I used 8’ side pieces so there were not any seams in the side panels. I made mine 6’5” tall inside for my height, but if you’re shorter make it fit you (but it will reduce the bed higher area when you’re in the bed) if you make your pop up shorter. I should have made my camper wider so my lift jacks could lift the camper and I can drive out from under it. Everything else is just measuring to your preference. I didn’t want my camper to hang off the back so I made it flush with the back bumper. When you build out the inside I’d suggest putting the majority of to your weight on the passenger side since the tacos fuel tank is on the drivers helps with taco lean. Hope that helps and have fun with your build. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
@@TravelingbyTacoma I'm going to try to CAD out some dimensions as soon as I get a chance. I'll share them. Thanks for the weight distribution tip!! That's some good to know stuff!!

@@TravelingbyTacoma Thanks much!!! When I initially went to the site, they just did not look like what was in your video. They look like just what I need. Again, thanks.
I added a plate of steel to mine to make each one wider. The L on them stock is like 2” I added another 8” x22” steel plate for more lift surface. I made my camper too narrow to use the lift and drive under when installing. The addition of the plates help give me some width if that makes sense. Good luck 👍🏻. TbT
four foot bed. So you can stand up in it but you cant lay down in it???
It’s a 5’ truck bed and the sleeping bed 6’5” long front to back when pulled out. Watch the (Full Tour) video episode 14 to see how it all works. I’m 6’5 and when it’s popped up I can stand straight up. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Do you have build plans for your camper?
No, not yet. I may draw up a set when I’m 100% done and make them available. That won’t be for a while though. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
How much did you invest ?
Under 5k but, I paid for my upholstery (seat pads and bed foam) to be professionally done. That was $1100. I also used a lot of reclaimed (basically new plywood I collected that people were throwing away) 90% of the inter buildout plywood was free that I collected driving around industrial buildings in my town. Biggest investment was time, but I thoroughly enjoyed the build process. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
Great job, I'm thinking of building my own camper. Thanks for all the info. How much it cost you (just materials) with your build to date?
Thanks. Good luck with your build hope my build helps you plan. So far I’d say I’ve spent $3500ish.
