    I built a roof rack for my old Gen 1 Pajero and had copied a system that my Sprite swift had. Unfortunately I had sold the caravan a few years before I got the Pajero. Long story short, those air struts and I had a long fight and I shelved the idea. The struts worked well on a home built trailer I acquired that has a lid that I can barely lift.
    Seeing your video has given me renewed energy to build that pop up roof rack. My pajero has a sliding roof so that's why I want a pop up roof rack.

    That first part was such humor! Gas strut calcs is a head spinner. But here is my method- weigh in kg the roof at the point you are going to lift it at. Add25% . Divide by 2 cos you have two stuts and then multiply by 10 to get the answer. so 40 kg at the mount point, plus 25% is 50kg. divide by 2 and multiply by 10 gives you 250Nm struts x2.

    Hi mate am from UK 🇬🇧 just watching your videos on the camper roof OMG 😮 you didn't half make it hard for yourself well over thought all you Needed to do was borrow a gas strut a one of your cars use 3×2 and some bathroom scales to see what the pressure was and on the back end of roof 😊😊use bed mattress spring pistons they are the same as what camper van retailers use but quarter of price 2 for £30 ebay but if you didn't want a slope you could use the wood and scales trick😂

    Coming to this video late. Newton-Meter makes sense in terms of the force required to open and close the roof as its a rotational measurement of force. Looking to do something similar but simpler and on a smaller scale. I think it will make my life a lot easier if I place each gas strut vertically in the corner lifting straight up.

  • @davidj7607
    @davidj7607 2 года назад +1

    curious why you need the hinge? could you have done it with 4 struts and chains on each corner to limit how high it would go? thank you for sharing...

    • @MariusBotha
      @MariusBotha  2 года назад +1

      Sorry. somehow missed this comment. The hinge is what keeps the roof goin up and down in a straight line. If u have gas struts and chains only, That would only happen when all of them are extended fully and locked. On the way down and up it would be all over the show increasing the risk of pinching the canvas.

      Hi there. So sorry for only replying now. for some reason ure comment didn't show up as un replied Really sorry. I didn't go with the fiberglass as I'm scared when shit goes wrong like closing the roof onto something that u didn't see while out on a trip it would be really bad. a 1mm sheet would get a hole punched in it very easily. I finally got some 3mm alu board that's got 2 this sheets of thin alu on the outsides and a 3mm plastic insulation between them. Very sturdy and nicely insulated. If the top gets cooked the inside will still be ok to touch.

    Gas struts - here is a possible way to adjust the struts, be warned, it’s trial and error, and will need a device to hold the shock and a lever long enough to collapse the strut
    1. Mount the body end of the strut in the jig,
    2. Attach the shaft end to the lever
    3. Using a grinder/Dremel/saw, make a very small notch in the shaft very near the mounting end - this notch MUST be made so the finished mounted strut rod WILL NOT collapse so the notch enters the body
    4. With strut in the jig, collapse the strut so the notch enters the strut body passing the seal. This must be done quickly so very little nitrogen escapes. Repeat until you have released enough nitrogen so the strut has the pressure you need. This can not be reversed if too much nitrogen is released.
    This is trial and error, the size, depth, location of the notch must be outside of the useable stroke of the strut.
    The jig can be as simple as mounting the body end of the strut to a work bench, drill and bolt one end of a 2x4 to the bench so it pivots, bolt the shaft end to the 2x4 to create a lever. The mounting point and dimensions all depend on the strut length and pressure. If the strut is weak enough you can actually use your body weight and collapse it using the floor.

    can you sent the drawing for pop up roof of camper tuck to me ?

  • @skylinevspec000
    @skylinevspec000 3 года назад +1

    think of it like this. 100n is 100kg of pushing power. Pressure wise, mentally imagine the inside of the tube, the piston will have a base that has the pressure behind it, The piston base is a little less than 1 square inch but for simplicity lets call it 1 square inch.. To push 100kg you need to put in about 1422 PSI of gas. Think about how much air rushes out of a regular compressor at 140psi...
    Its more complex than this but to work out the gas strut you need basically take the weight of your roof and divide by the number of struts then add on a little as wiggle room
    Angle of strut matters and is roughly a percentage loss based on the angle within 90 degrees. If the strut was 90 degrees its not pushing at all. if its 45 degrees its about 50% pushing pressure.
    This is all super simple maths and assumptions, its more complex but this will get you by in most situations.
    It would have been funny to see you blasted, its good you can have a laugh, ive seen people have their skin torn off from pressure and oil..
    Thx for the vid

    your lucky its only nitrogen gas , i had an empty LPG tank in my car as dual fuel, it hant been used in years, i took an angle grinder to the straps, with my dad and a weed sprayer full of water, got the straps cut successfully, then as i was turning the grinder off with a cut off wheel, my middle finger grazed the wheel thankfully only skin deep behind the nail bed, trip to the doctor and tetanus vaccine and bandage i go back home to finish the job, taking the bolts out of the tank, unknowingly opening the valve assembly, thankfully it was only compressed air and Ethyl Mercaptan witch is the additive for the odorant added to make LPG (propane) and natural gas smell to detect for leaks, so the rest of the day all i could smell and taste was the Ethyl Mercaptan witch was like eating a whole bulb of raw garlic, in my nasal passage and back of my mouth, lots of mouth was and a couple of nasal flushes,,, if it was full of gas i could have been overcome by the gas and could have not been around from asphyxiation
    i have watched this whole series on the build, i must say a well planed build and from designed in CAD to the full build is what makes me want to keep watching intrigued to see how the final idea has come to life
