  • Honda adds a middleweight to its US 2019 Neo-Sports Café lineup with the introduction of the CB650R. The CB650R slots between the fantastic (and affordable) CB300R and the ultra-premium CB1000R.
    --
    The 2019 CB650R is powered by a 649cc inline-four engine that was purpose built for life on the street. Although it shares the same cylinder bore measurements as the CBR600RR engine, Honda assures us the engines are completely different. And you can tell from the moment you lift the kickstand. As opposed to a conventional middleweight 600, the CB jumps away from stoplights with added vigor. Yet it still has that same fun, rip-roaring sound and four-cylinder power rush, only more usable.
    The powertrain has been tweaked, as has the chassis-so much so that Honda dropped the “F’ designation from the model name, replacing it with a “R.” But how does it ride? We go through the ins and outs of this new naked bike in this episode of MC Commute.

    Now, THAT'S a Honda!!! Inline-4 screaming, hustling into the corners...this is the review I've been looking forward to!
    Amazingly, that display, despite all the glare, is AMAZINGLY clear and easy to read, moreso than the other bikes you've commuted on lately. Maybe it's the riding position?

    Just got one in England - £6,999 ($8,900) with a quickshifter thrown in. Only ABS and TC here, no option without. It's great value in England, £500 more than an MT07, but much better quality all round. With 94 bhp it's the best value you can have here. An MT09 has much more power, but the difference in insurance costs is huge. Excellent suspension, slipper clutch, quickshifter, floating discs, LEDs all round and a great stock sound. I'm delighted with it.

      I'm jealous! Good look with it! Based on this review I would definitely have one if I could find the room. Again, based on this review the bike looks to be very predictable and easy to get used to. Even at this price it looks like Honda just may have a hit on their hands. I would like a round tach but I'm an old fart. Old farts like these kinds of things.

    Picked mine up today, similar feel to my Street Triple '13', which I loved. Its firm with great feedback. Front brakes were great straight away but back brake needs bedding in, no feel. Clutchless gear shifts a breeze and gear box in general has a great feel. Ive put an R&G tail tidy on which is on the large size, not sure im 100% sold on its looks but quality is good. Ive set display at max brightness and its still dim through dark visor. I tried hard to get vibes at 6000 revs in all gears and none on mine. Throttle can be a bit on/off at low revs, typical of euro 4. ABS only in Oz. The front indicators are permanently on with front light which is a safety feature and not sure if unique to Australia? Of cause they flash when indicating and looks brighter so perhaps more leds lit. Mirrors are good enough. The clutch grab is at the end of the lever travel which is a slight stretch for my preference. I will be getting adjustable levers, screen to shelter screen and quickshifter before slip on or full system. Highly recommend this bike and Ive ridden alot. Will suit someone who likes to be a bit aggressive, to hoon.

    I LOVE inline fours! I got out f the service in 1971 and bought a CB500F. Wow. Best looking built to that time. The pipes were trash. I drove the bike to work and the pipes rotted out every two years. Still I went to Sturgis and the Calvary Stampede, rode down from Shreveport to Houston every couple of months to see my parents. Honda builds an engine that will run forever if you just keep the fluids up. Change the chain and sprockets and you can keep moving, year after year. I now have my second Goldwing(1978 and 2015) and I am a confirmed Honda owner.

      I have a 1980 cb650c inline 4. (550 chassis) bumped thr displacement up to pass emissions. The 4 cylinders on any of the 70s honda city bikes sounds the balls. Especially the 750s

      J Wro they really did sound sweet. I had a Z1 after the 500 Honda and the four pipes on any of those bikes were so much sweeter than all the single pipes you could put in those bikes back then. The Six cylinder sounded like an F1 engine.

    Excellent review - fun and facts. And always good to see the bike in action over a realistic journey. Good bike too - that price is high but likely soon forgotten over something like an mt07 - great fun, but many more shortcomings. And a bigger bike for everyday use? Forever hitting the 'sensible' speed limits far too soon and probably with less fun. A smallish I4 is a treat.

    Always loved Honda for the reliability and build quality, but their design up until now seemed somewhat uninspiring and dull to me. This neo sports cafe lineup, though... absolutely gorgeous bikes, every single one of them. Just ordered a CB650R the other day, can't wait for it to arrive.

    • @dsofe4879

      @Thgt Ggyh maybe if you're coming off a Tuono or Superduke, but I've owned one for a few weeks now and it ain't boring to me. Super linear powerband inspires confidence and makes it easy to thrash around, even for a fairly inexperienced rider like me. I'll probably be riding something different a few years from now, but for a first "big bike" I can absolutely recommend the CB.

    • @dsofe4879
      @dsofe4879 4 года назад +1

      @Thgt Ggyh well, agree to disagree I guess. Can't say it feels anything even remotely like a 300-class bike, unless you're cruising below 6000 rpm all the time. Haven't raced a 390 duke yet, but I find it hard to believe a bike with literally half the power and torque is faster in any scenario, even with a 100lbs weight advantage.

    • @dsofe4879
      @dsofe4879 4 года назад +8

      @Thgt Ggyh yeah I can tell you're looking for an internet fight, but I'm not in the mood so you're not getting one. Don't really need to have ridden any specific KTM to figure out that those numbers don't quite add up. Have fun with whatever bike isn't boring to you. I'm happy with my 650R.

      @@christopher7310 After borrowing an MT07 for a month long test period and ending up on the CB I wouldn't say "extremely" overpriced, not by a long shot. The overall build quality on the CB is honestly miles above that of the MT. The CB is turnkey bike in every sense of the word. Better components, better fit and finish, better looking. After riding both, it is clear the CB is the more refined bike. The MT feels every bit an entry level bike and that shows in the more approachable price tag. Now with the CB I think the OEM quickshifter should be standard, and with that said $500 cheaper on top. I wouldn't call that extreme, but maybe thats just me. It's a great all around bike for a single stable owner.

      When you are riding your Honda in 10 or 15 years and it looks and rides just like the day it was made while the other Japanese bikes are long since gone, you won't be remembering that extra grand or two you spent to buy it.

    Honda has high powered V twins that would serve the 650 twins well, possibly bringing down the msrp making them a great bike for the value or at least that's what I think.

    Great review as always. You should do a comparison video of the XSR700, MT07, CB650, Z650, and the SV650.

      I would like to see this. I bought the new sv last year and love it but I really love the way this cb650r looks. I like my vtwin grunt. I like the more hooligan nature of the mt07 but hate the looks and the kawasaki was pretty vanilla and the looks do nothing for me.

      @@a-vic7559 SV650 great bike, especially if your budget is tight. MT07 for the thrills also not bad on budget. Z650 for reliability, bit bland though. CB650R for a medium of reliability, thrills and comfort, not so budget friendly though.

      Yep agreed. When stationary its ok, but once moving Adam tends to lean down a little bit. Bias it up when still and it should work great. But I'm just happy MC commute is continuing on a free platform with another great host!

    Neutral usually happens on hard acceleration the 1st-2nd shift and false neutrals on 4th-5th that pops back in when backed off IIRC, frequency decreases when the bike gets some mileage though. It's a good update mechanically but I prefer my '18 CB-F decepticon headlight. Prefer the '19 CBR-R over the '18 CBR-F though. It's expensive and heavy but it's a more substantial and solid feeling bike than the other 650 [twins]. Also I bought last years F as my first bike and I have no issue recommending the Honda 650 to a rider 5'10"+ and 170lbs+ that has done riding school. Also good call on the Metzlers, I rode with those Dunlop D222 for 9500mi and they are garbage confidence robbing tires, I'm on Power RS now and it's completely different animal in turns.

    Good day Sir. Nice video. But there is something i want to ask.
    Is it safe to your motorcycle when you turn it on and start the engine as soon as possible even if the engine check (the yellow one on the panel) is not yet off? Thanks for your answer.
    Because all of my friend (mechanics) says that you better wait the engine check to turn off the light before starting engine

    Yes, it is quite vibey at 6,000+. It seems to differ from bike to bike. The one I test rode was smoother than mine. It's quite thirsty too. I'll see what dealer says at first service.

      yeah I got a lot of vibration too at 6-7k rpm but it's still new i've had like 400km on it... my friends who had this kinda bike since January say it will get smoother after the break in period

    Adam - it wasn't so long ago that you were carving a SV650 on those OEM Dunlop Sortmax and you said how good they were!Perhaps the SV flattered them but I don't think they are as bad as you make out in this review.
