- Royal Enfield attempted to make a splash in the US with the reintroduction of its single-cylinder-powered Continental GT, in 2004. While we appreciated its tasteful lines, the performance and build quality left something to be desired. Fast-forward to today, and Royal Enfield has a new and most certainly improved 2019 Continental GT.

If it is the bike that rides in the Himalayas, it can tread anywhere. it's true. period.
New bikes are getting too expensive. People are tired of bikes that take years to pay off and manufacturers who just assume buyers don't care about the total cost just how low the down payment will be. RE have brought out some proper bikes you can save up a good chunk of the asking price for and pay the balance in a reasonable amount of time.
If you take into account inflation, new bikes offer a hell of a lot more for about the same price as those of yore.

Having seen this bike in person, it honestly looks more like an old Triumph than the modern Bonnevilles do. We have a RE dealer locally, and he's already sold most of the Interceptor 650s hes gotten

They honestly look amazing! I just kind of found out about these things today, I mean i knew of RE's buth this new Continental GT, all the features, the warranty, stock Pirelli tires, and price? I wonder if it is a decent idea to buy one of these new.
@@gsabella4 go for it mate, been loving mine. Had it for about 2 months now and can't fault it. Turn back and look at it every time I walk away. Also the three year warranty and rsa is a nice assurance.

Royal Enfield in the UK set up the Indian factory in the 1950's.To sell the bikes they made for the Eastern markets.When Royal Enfield in the Uk stopped trading,the company in India carried on!
Factory was setup in India to deliver bullets to Indian army.
Enfield UK was in loss and got bankrupt
Indian partner brought the equipments and restarted the company
It's 99.9% indian 0.01 % UK bike brand
Indian army saved the Enfield... When it was in losses, it was the Indian army who placed orders for these bikes and and then decided to manufacture it locally.. Madras motors and royal enfiled then jointly manufactured these motorcycles.. But the enfield was in ruins again as the Japanese motorcycles came into the Indian market... The Rd350, rx100, Suzuki shogun etc dipped the sales of the enfield... It was then taken up by eicher( an Indian manufacturer of commercial vehicles)
They started bringing out changes in engines, etc.. And now enfield is back in the game again..💪
When Royal Enfield existed in UK, bikes made in India were badged Enfield India. Later Enfield India bought the rights to the title “Royal Enfield”.

I have been a motorcycle enthusiast for 25 years. And as far as I can tell, the Royal Enfield brand has the most beautiful motorcycles on planet Earth right now. Nothing even comes close. Except the Triumphs. But the color schemes and overall layout of the Royal Enfields, are just spectacular.
Himalayan needs slightly more power, the chassis is too good !
I'd MUCH rather pay $6k for this bike than finish restoring my 1976 KZ750.. Plus it would have a warranty and modern reliability.
Buy. It, when people ask what ride you have, you can say you have a Continental GT.
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks Yeah. Honestly, since I already have a Bonneville T120, I think I'll pick up a RE Himalayan (hopefully they'll release a different version soon with a motor that can handle 85-90mph highway cruising speed).

The 535 single was a fun bike but had a number of short comings. The 650 is a huge improvement. Kudos to Royal Enfield for listening to their customers and bringing out the upgrade.

So I always knew of Royal Enfield at least the name since the early 1980s but it wasn't until very recently watching Jay Leno's garage and videos like this that I feel like I really knew them and to be honest I want several Royal and feels I think they are incredible

I predict RE sells a TON of these 650's (GT and Interceptor) here in the US.
Indian And the other half will be guys in Anglophone countries who love classic looking reliable bikes.

@@gsabella4 I finally got to sit on one yesterday. I'm 6'3" and it wasn't too bad. I could see me with one of these for daily commuting. Hoping to set up a test ride. For Long trips, I have a Road Glide. I cant imagine it competing in that arena :)
@@eliljehorn Yes, make sure you keep your glide as the seat on the RE is pretty soft on a bit longer jaunt and starts to hurt after a while. Harley does seats well.

This bike is just a beauty, one of the most Beautiful Nikes out there imo
Got one of these for the garage. It’s slow compared to my triumph but it’s such a blast to ride it doesn’t even matter. I highly recommend this to anyone that wants a cheap bike or is looking for a second bike for when you want to change it up from time to time. I also see this as the perfect companion for the guy that has a big Harley touring machine that wants to have a sportier option for around town.
It's also good for modding without fear of screwing up an expensive bike.

Bybre is actually a subsidiary of brembo. The brake pads and rotors are brembo, the caliper as well is a brembo caliper but just with bybre branding.

He didn't imply they were copies, just stated they weren't actually Brembos. That's because the Brembo brand is reserved for their high end parts, not their parts made in India for small to medium sized bikes and scooters, specialising in volume for the BRIC and S E Asian markets.
The rotors have the brembo branding in red colour....its a small b in red.

I rode this bike 2 days ago, it's a very friendly bike to ride, the power is a little low but the brake is awesome. I had a situation when I had to brake hard and the Bybre brake worked fantastically.
Looks like a proper street bike. I like it.
Actually in India - RE enthusiasts Swap the actual pads Just the pads with Aftermarket brake pads from Expensive brands - the steel braided lines & master cylinder and brake callipers are are capable of handling different brake pads too.
Also in India Enthusiasts change the chain after it’s gone to DID brand chain.
The halogen headlights are also very easy swap here in India Many swap for a coupler to coupler swap of headlights
@@mrvk699 It sounds like you have a lot of experience, and I want to ask you a question. Is the oil cooler really necessary or can I remove it? I'm from the USA, and it's not as hot here. I'm thinking the oil cooler is something they added for the Indian market.
@@BEEBEE159 Buddy, I have done my Undergrad Major Degree in Mechanical Engineering as Well. Will never recommend you to play with Crucial Parts of a Internal Combustion Engine - and Removing An Oil Cooler from The Royal Enfield bike is equivalent of you Removing Complete Heat Exchanger from Your Car. If you remove the Oil Cooler The engine would not Complete the cool down Phase and May Burst a Crankshaft or worst Engine Seizure due to Overheating.
Don’t do that. If you need more power you are free to void your manufacturer Warranty and proceed with a Third-party ECU Tuning Kit.
@@mrvk699 Thank you for the reply. I noticed that the original classic bikes the Royal Enfield is based on don't have oil coolers on them. The engines, from the outside, look very similar. I'm thinking of the 1966 BSA Lightning 650, for example.

I have sat and ridden this so I think I can answer this question.
1. The seat is too thin. if you are even slightly heavy, causes the seat to be pressed down and you will basically be sitting on the frame.
2. It's engine looks massive for a 650cc twin. It looks misproportionate and the engine can get hot. Also the pegs strike your legs if waddling through traffic.
3. Tachometer and switch gears are very basic and don't look or feel great.
Overall a decent bike sold for a good price.
No tubeless tires.. that is the only con I can find.. you can do 150+ without much effort.. and look at the price...or try intercepter 650
Awesome to see "elemental" type bikes being built. I love cruisers, crotch rockets and adventure bikes, but the good old "Standard" style has it's charms. The price is right!! The roadside really takes any worries of reliability away. Thanks for taking over the commute and making a seamless transition. Could you give us a slightly higher view with your cam? the horizon ahead disappears quickly! Thanks and keep up the good work!

But, proper positioning in the lane gives you the fastest escape route from bad car drivers and it doesn't matter which state your in.
I had a harley rider rididng in the middle behind my van last summer and guess what, he ran into the back of me because he couldn't see past me ( it didn't help that he only stomped on the back brake and fell off when he slid sideways).

Honestly your review is the one I've been waiting to watch, because I remember your review on the previous version of this bike and how horrible the bike was in build quality. Glad to know this bike has a lot of glowing reviews, and that RE got it together and built a good bike this time around.
Randy Farrell - RE still offers the old single cylinder bikes but have also improved their quality quite a lot. Still desirable as a bike for people who long for elemental single cylinder Brit. bikes from the 60s or just want to slow down the pace of living and ride a simple machine that still has a disc front brake and fuel injection. Often much beloved by their owners.
Parallel twins are the very least sexy of engines but my tiny, ancient 200cc Twinstar hauls me at 67 mph with a swapped sprocket plus panniers and fairing from way way back when Honda put out those "Custom" street crawlers. Chihuahuas love'm. I wonder if mine is the only fully dressed in the US left. 👍to India and Royal Enfield for turning things around and also, solidarity to the workers who are asserting themselves in the motorcycle manufactories of India. Quality is best sought as a universal.

Love the MC commute but I just realized that we don’t really know how good the headlights work at night on the bikes you test. Love what Royal Enfield is doing. Please ride the Himalayan as well. The new 650s suit my commuting needs. Thanks.
I live in India and I have the Interceptor 650, the more upright twin of the Continental GT 650 and I love this bike. This bike has two natures, one is laid back and calm, the other comes to life with a twist of the throttle. It has just enough power to keep me entertained while not being overwhelming to a rider like me who just came from a 19HP 225cc Honda. RE just hit the spot with this bike.
On a side note, the Interceptor and Continental aren't actually doing great in terms of sales figures in India. The bulk of RE purchases are the old Classic and Bullet bikes.
Well, outside India the brand is doing pretty well, i think rn it's the third best selling bike in the UK (Interceptor) and here in Southamerica the brand does sells a lot too. I'm saving money for a Continental GT

Everything is good but the waiting period on this bike in India is 4 goddamn months.. I booked one in February, still waiting

@@davelawson2564 production capacity is just 2500 units per month. Out of which 50% is exported to other countries. In New Delhi waiting period has increased to a painful 5 months. I am still waiting for my motorcycle. Been 4 months already. Promised delivery period was 3 months back then.
Oh wow. Here in the US my local dealer had 4 of these bikes available. Obviously Royal Enfield is putting a lot of effort into expanding their sales outside of India.
We have ready stock here in Thailand. Been contemplating on getting one. It's a really cool bike.
@@davelawson2564 they are doing this for so long. Not trying to sell too many bikes because if they sell too much they can't provide better after sale service which is integral part of this brand success.
It's a bigger manufacturing facility and I cross it everytime when I travel to Chennai from my hometown. The company has 4 shifts there but still couldn't meet the demand that they are getting!

Really really want a GT, between a Moto Guzzi V7 and this for the best retro motorcycle on the market today. The Kawasaki W800 gets a nod as well. But this is perfect 650 and 750 air cooled bikes forever!

I'm on my 2nd Moto Guzzi V7. (The first was stolen.) Does everything I want it to do, including a 20 mile each way commute along narrow country lanes, fast dual carriageway, and busy urban roads. My wife and I have been camping on it. We often do 100 to 200 mile days. It will comfortably hold 80-90 mph and still accelerate. (I tested this on a private road honest!) Lovely bike. I like the Enfields. For me, the Guzzi's shaft drive wins the day for all year round all weather riding. I love the look of the Enfields, though, and hope they do well.
The Moto Guzzi V7 is a wonderful motorcycle, also. But, there soon will be more Royal Enfield dealerships in America than Moto Guzzi dealerships. And for that reason alone I am glad that I bought a Royal Enfield.
@@Larry-ir6of Guzzi's marketing and dealer network outside mainland Europe is poor. Enfield's marketing is excellent. My local Guzzi dealer gave up his Guzzi dealership to sell Enfields and has never looked back. I see 10 Enfields on the road for every Guzzi I see. I love the Guzzi, but I'd consider an Enfield now they have moved on from the Bullet.

@@davelawson2564 I agree. However, the Guzzi engine is quite simple (2 cylinder OHV, pushrod, air cooled) and most service and repair places will be able to work on it. Manuals and specs are available online. Moto Guzzi are part of the Piaggio group which has a huge network in the UK. However, Guzzi dealers are few and far between. I gather spares delivery can be on the slow side.
Amazing the world we live in now. In the past, a bike manufactured in India might not get much attention in the US...too many unknowns, not made in the US, etc.
But today, a Royal Enfield fits into the typical industry manufacturing model of most cars and motorcycles...designed in one country, parts from another country, manufactured in another country, dealers in major markets across the world.
This bike has me intrigued 🤔
I enjoy all of your reviews and this one was no exception, you provide a unique style and approach, straight up to the point, real world explanation of what you feeling on the bike as it happens. Very important that you are reviewing options like this bike, vehicles that are not so popular but could be a hidden gem. At this point I am downgrading from a Road Glide, and just looking for something small for around town and inexpensive to own and maintain, something with character, good looks and comfortable and enough performance to keep me entertained and I believe this bike hits all of those requirements. I suffer from carpal tunnel, so riding stance and handlebar vibration are issue for me. At first I was torn between the Kawasaki Z400 which has a bit more performance or the Honda CB300R that has the cafe looks that I adore. But, both bikes are under power, not for highway riding, issues with vibration, tall sport bikes comfort issues, so other than the extra weight, this bike seems to offer a good alternative compared to my other two options. I extra warranty sounds good, but I never count on it, they always find ways to disqualify you when you need it the most, so I just buy and maintain at my own risk.
Nice review. I am a returning rider after 30 years or so. I let my heart rule my head and bought a '20 CGT 650 Black Magic back in Jul '20! I am just awaiting the imminent arrival of a pair of TEC slip on mufflers that seem quite similar to the S&S. It is just plain fun to ride and stupid good value for money.
Would also appreciate a commute review on the Interceptor 650 and your thoughts on this bike compared to the Triumph Street Twin.

This is the only bike that's worth looking at from this brand. The other 350/535's are straight out shitcraps!
I wonder how well these are going to sell here in the US. It seems peope are buying them and are hyped.

I just bought a meteor350 and the two 650s they had (a continental and an interceptor) were both sold by the time I took delivery of mine.
They had a few Himalayan bikes and 2 other Meteor 350s.
While my Meteor isn’t really a highway bike, it is very impressive for a 350cc, 425lb bike. Very torquey which makes it feel bigger than it is and gets phenomenal fuel mileage.
I can get to work on back roads, so the 75mph top speed is fine for me.

I know the market is a bit different and it may take them some time as well. @शिरीष ರಾಮಾಯ no way, I have the gt650 and have ridden the 535. The frame on the 650 feels sturdier and the rake angle is more as well, steering is quicker.
@शिरीष ರಾಮಾಯ @शिरीष ರಾಮಾಯ I agree but did you know just by loosening two bolts on each of the clip ons you can drop the 650's handlebar upto 1-1.5 inches on the fork arms with zero other modification. It can be made more aggressive than the 535 also.

I got to ride the GT and Interceptor and they where both great bikes. The INT was a little more comfortable from an ergonomics perspective but the GT was much better looking when sitting next to the INT. My knees hit something on the engine/frame/tank on the GT when really hugging the bike in turns. At $6K for a brand new bike any complaints are really just nitpicking. I could see a lot of people picking up a GT for more customization. Great bikes, hope other manufactures are paying attention.

@@nervotica7991 here in India re costs 4000 USD and Kawasaki w800 costs 12000 USD and both provide same performance but build quality wise Kawasaki is better but I guess it's a single cylinder?
@@VishalPandey710 The W800 is a 360 degree twin with bevel shaft cam drive and a long stroke engine. The RE is a 270 degree twin with a short stroke engine so power comes on a little later in the rev band than the W800. Different riding dynamics.
@@nervotica7991 I think the RE is a desirable bike, but I adore my W800 Street! Just love to listen to, look at and especially ride that bike. It has reinvigorated my riding experience.

Harris performance's main claim to fame is their racing pedigree, they were involved in the Yamaha 500GP racing bikes from 92 onwards and ran the Suzuki superbike team in the mid/ late 90's

That camera angle is killing the fun of this video. Rode this bike a while back and it's a really good bike just needs better suspension and you do feel the weight on your wrists when you turn. It's a cafe racer staying true to its lineage as a classic motorcycle brand, stop asking for led headlights on a cafe racer.
If you were reviewing a Yamaha MT-07 I would accept more some of your comments - does it wheelie - but it's not. It's a gentlemans motorcycle for riding out with your friends and chillin'. You didn't have your chillin head on when you rode this bike imo.
I agree with you. This is a different category machine meant for Leisure more then for race and fancy stunt. That wheelie was painful to watch.

So much going for this RE Continental. So much to love about it, it’s not the best but it sure is the best for the money. Don’t forget the suspension is made by Gabriel! An American company who manufactures suspension systems for 4x4’s and trucks alike. I’m a fella from England who rides a 2019 Kawasaki Z900rs but would definitely buy one of these RE’s tomorrow if I had room in my Garage.
Love the twins, I've bought the Interceptor 650 and I felt in love with it, only downside is fuel economy, I do 200km and the fuel light starts blinking, with the Classic 500 you can do 300km with one tank.
Classic 350 you can do even more

Alfa I was riding at about 55 mph on secondary roads (in the USA that mean not on highways. And also on side streets in stop and go traffic.

No the AEWs are the best sounding plus they are near the legal territory.
