Thanks for a very informative vlog - this is the kind of information that is invaluable to someone like myself who is about to dip my toe into narrowboat life.
Good of you to show up at the supper table today…😂😂… at least we know you haven’t gone missing or drowned in the cut. You look rested. That’s good because overdoing it for too long a time takes its toll. Important to get into a manageable pace. Take care of yourself and 🥂 as always. 👍🇨🇦
Hi hopefully you can get some curtains up soon On the topic of your fire going out overnight I've bought a thing called a coal cage load it up before you go to bed and it's still going in the morning just remove it when u get up and load new coal / ovals onto the hot embers and its back burning away in 5 min
Right from the start, I can see one reason I couldn't live on a narrowboat--there's no way that I can carry anything as heavy as coal bags anymore. I really like the idea of a composting toilet. We use far too much water with typical plumbed toilets.
Hi James, it's great to see you using the ash from the fire for your toilet, I thought that would have just been thrown away, but they say you learn something new every day. The fireplace does look better when it's cleaned, but like you say it doesn't have to be absolutely perfect. Looking forward to your next vlog.
Hi James and thanks for the update and the fuel costs seem very reasonable overall. Great job on the fire place and the information about the lock repair was very interesting. Catch you next time. Keith
Just out of curiosity I did a search on the web to find out where I could buy coal, here in the united states. I would have to drive 200 miles from where I am now to procure some. Coal is just about banned here in the US. Most all coal mines are shut down. The only coal used in the US is for older electric generator plants. Coal is considered a major pollutant. I have never burned coal in my life. I am 60 years old and coal is considered to be an archaic form of fuel. I don't think that I have ever touched a piece of coal.
Your tile cleaner appeared to be basic baking soda, which would do the job for a fraction of the cost… and also works very well to polish up the glass on the burner. With winter upon us and fires burning all the time, those tiles will take a beating. You’ll do yourself a favour to spend five minutes a week scrubbing them down. Nice video, thank you! 😊
James, at 13:09 there's a spirit drifting across the screen. Saw one on one of your other videos. The boat is haunted fella. ;-) ;-) Obvs, only if you believe in that kind of thing ?-)
Lovely clean fire but why didn't you clean the glass? Damp cloth (or paper towel) dipped in a little ash rubbed on the glass. Another clean cloth ( or paper towel) to rub it off. Takes a minute but looks so much better x
If you now live on your narrowboat with no fixed address how or where do you register your car? How do you get a bank account? I only ask this as I would like a similar lifestyle change and you make straight to the point honest videos
It's such a joy to hear from you. I hope this weekend is proving to be as pleasant as you hoped. I'm just glad that the difficult week is behind you. Take care and be well, James. When do you think your boiler will be up and running? - Leigh
I’m sure that if you dig hard enough, there’s a succession line that would make James and his narrow boat the king of England. Sorry just go off a useful charts video.
Hi James. I was starting to worry about you, being away so long. That looks like the modern equivalent of Vim or Ajax. £70 a month for a phone? Madness. GiffGaff unlimited is £35 All the best, mate.
James have you decided on a flooring choice and what timeframe do you foresee installing it? Thought maybe this winter while stuck inside might work out. Cheers mate
Blimey James, taking a dump in plastic bag full of ash. You're really taking all the supposed magic out of boating. What do you do with the turd/ash bags if you can't dump them down an elsan? Once you start using your water for showering etc you may find you need to get a bigger water tank.
Nice use if the ash tray waste James! I’m going to use that method thanks 😊
For the stove. Dip a rag in water, then dip in the the ash, a great way to clean the stove glass and another way to use some of the ash.
Seat covers, curtains, flooring, hot water. Come on James time for some more DIY.
You are not wrong mate. Boiler is nearly here. Curtains kinda on order. Flooring ordered delivered this week. It’s getting there
Great to see you so settled in the life on the cut, thanks for the update, love seeing the fuel boats. You take care.

Love the vlogs james. Keep them coming
You inspired us to put the same tiles in our porch, they look lovely. We have some left over sealant that you’re very welcome to 🤩

Hi James, you look like you have settled in. Have a great weekend 😊
Hi mate. Now we’re heading into winter, try to keep your fuel tank full, saves the condensation problem.
Missed you James!

It won’t be actual coal, it will be a smokeless fuel, think we just call it coal from days gone by, we can only use smokeless fuel in England :)
Nice shot of Sandy’s in Twickenham !

All the best, mate.
Hey bud - all good - just had a bit of a full on week!! My tariff includes my kids phones so I can manage their data
smarty which is owned by three 20 quid a month unlimited no tethering restrictions
Just wondering, Do you have a lock on your gas locker and a secure spot for your coal storage? I may have missed that, thanks.
Nope - good call though 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I was wondering the same thing.
So here you can find another use for your ash, clean your hearth and your fire glass, again use it on a damp cloth.
Only wood ash for glass! 👍
Yeah I knew about that one but in fairness my glass is really quite clear still which really surprises me -
Hi James! Are you going to put some colour on the walls? And what are your plans the flooring?
James have you decided on a flooring choice and what timeframe do you foresee installing it? Thought maybe this winter while stuck inside might work out. Cheers mate
How much on coal James ? If I was you I’d review that in the spring mate.
Just a thought as you mentioned your car James, how do you keep it close by?
Better than using the mug for number 2?
Where do you store ash when it is still warm?
