A visit from the Fuel Boat [Ep 27]

- In this weeks video the fuel boat Bargus gets a prop foul after delivering coal to the moored boaters at the Salt barge pub. I then leave Marston and head down the Anderton Boat lift onto the river Weaver as I'm due to be blacked at Northwich dry dock the following week. The weather turns for the worse once I get onto the river so I batten down the hatches and crack open the Rum.

That’s proof that the canals are the basis of a hard life. Better today of course but there has been many many years of hard grafting as we have been shown by informative videos. Three cheers for today and many further improvements.
Brilliant reason to retrofit a weed-hatch whenever possible! He wasn't half low in the water... Those were genuine waves on the water which made the music oh so perfect 🤣

Mind you, that coal-boat does underline the injustice inherent in the system………..I mean, where’s the ale-boat? Or more importantly, the emergency bacon sandwich fast-reaction force?
😂😂 hahahaa we wouldn’t cope without the fuel boats … it’s such hard work carrying them bags of coal down the muddy towpaths … there are a few booze boats on the system but mostly at festivals and not delivered to your boat like the coal boats do 😂😂🍺🏴☠️❤️

Haha there is nothing worse than lugging heavy coal bags down the towpath … I love the fuel boats 😂😂

When I played in pipe-bands I was the lead drummer, which meant I ended up with all the drums/stuff to schlep from my car across huge fairgrounds to where our band was set up. I've been known to add a handle, axle and lawnmower tires to drum cases. ;-)

I love the drums … I can’t play kit but I do have a djembe onboard that a fiddle with every now and again 😂😂 do you still play ?
@@TheNarrowboatPirate I don't play kit either. I was always a rudimental snare drummer. I played in pipe bands for 7 years, and fife & drum corps (American colonial style - nothing to do with Irish/etc.) for 25 years. (Although I traded in my drum there for a fife - easier to carry!) I've played fife in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2007 and in the EMT in Sydney Australia in 2010.
We'd session with djembes in the pipe bands though, although I never played.
I can't believe Puddle was actually snuggled up against the stove! You need to make sure you can close your flaps before you moor up! Lovely sunset :)

The lift reminds me of a visit to the Falkirk Wheel in Central Scotland where you get loaded at the bottom and it swings upwards to the top to join the Forth/Clyde canal!
Ahoy Jim, I’ve been on that when myself and a load of boating pals hired boats to do the Scottish canals … it’s was fabulous 😃🏴☠️
Not many canals in Scotland ,Great Glen and the short Crinan canal both built to avoid long sails round the north of Scotland and the Crinan to save you going round the Mull of Kintyre(cue Paul McCartney!).😁

We live aboard …. We would love to be ‘off grid’ but while ever we stay tethered to social media, phones etc, it’s a pipe dream! Great vlog, love the supply boats.
Thanks Nigel, I run a business off grid using printers and computer all day long, so it can be done 😃😃 i have a Jackery power bank to run all the work stuff and then my boat batteries are just for the fridge freezer, lights and tv 😃😃🏴☠️

The cruise to Anderton definatley showed us what winter life is like on your boat. I loved "The Thrusting Cutlass" which accompanied our journey - great piece of new music for me.
Our second time on the boat lift down onto the River Weaver. What a beautiful sunset after the rain storm.

Love the vlog. I had a 2week holiday on a narrowboat 2 months ago, did the Warwickshire ring. Loved every second of it. Going to save up and in about 7 years quit work buy a narrowboat and cruise the canals.

Ahoy, thank you for watching 😃 during the summer i trade as the Pirate Boat as canal side events so dress the boat up and usually have a big cannon on the front and that little brass artillery one was the nearest I could get for the back 😂😂 its to help me plunder and pillage villages and other vessels 😂😂🏴☠️

I watch a ton of narrowboat vlogs, narrow them down to the people that are fun. I am in the US and want to rent a boat. I'm single and from a vlog from the silver fox said that the companies won't rent to a solo boater. Is this a given in your knowledge. I don't expect you to know seeing you own one. But I'm sure it won't hurt to ask. Keep it 🙂 up and I was an owner of a pug also. Best to pudding pup. Lol. Hope I didn't put my foot in my mouth in case he's not with us.

😂😂 I went from the top of the lift to the bottom … we only have the van over winter and when I’m cruising I just send her a postcode of where I’m moored - so no messing about having to go back for it 😂😂

I have been watching few canal videos recently and always enjoyable to watch. I enjoy walking down the canal banks in Hebden Bridge and Halifax areas and seeing where all the boats are from.
Silly question but don't you have a problem with the exhaust fumes with the exhaust pipe being in front of you when cruising.

Thanks for watching, I was moored in Hebden and Tod last winter, it’s a lovely up there 😃 In regard to my exhaust, unfortunately the original motor narrowboats were all designed on this style with the mid engine and traditional boatmans cabin at the back and although my boat isn’t too old (built in the early 2000’s) whoever had it built originally chose the old style tug design with a old 1969 lister… but I do absolutely love this layout … sometimes I do get stingy eyes, especially in a tunnel 😂😂 but I’ve just got used to it now haha 🏴☠️

Question regarding your great music titles - What with the cold weather and the trouble you had with the engine - should not your composition of Stiff Ripples be better called “Stiff Nipples”?

No, but we do have license / waterways fees to pay 😲 and have to find ways to create our own power, otherwise we are sitting by candle light when drinking our rum 😂

I just found this channel yesterday, so I'm going back, trying to catch up a bit. Heidi, is there an episode, in which you tell the story of how you got started in the narrowboat life? Fascinating subculture, I wonder if we have anything like it in the states.

Mm was there a flow On-The-river l just wondered after being on static water, l mean a 60 ft boat , hope you’ve got plenty of thrust in that prop , I have worked boat in a 6 knot tide for 40 odd years
