We forgot to mention to also CHECK YOUR GEARBOX OIL and change if necessary. And don't be like us and use an adjustable spanner for your engine bolts, use actual sized ones if possible :)

Hi Wes and Amy :) May I ask where you got the absorbent pads from?
Really good instructional video, can I suggest that when you have pumped the oil from the engine sump, you then put about a litre of fresh oil in the sump, then pump that out, all it does is makes sure clean oil washes out any of the remaining old oil in the bottom of the sump. Just a suggestion.

Great stuff. You can also take the WASP filter apart and rinse it in diesel periodically. I haven’t been brave enough to do this yet but saw it on a Narrowboat Will vlog. It was nice to meet you the other day. I hope the anglers weren’t too annoying. Andy NB Eleanor.

Never prefill the fuel filter, you'll just end up sending contaminants straight into the pump and injectors. The filter housing has a plunger on top, so when you change the filter, remove the outlet hose and pump the plunger until diesel comes out of the pipe. Refit hose and give it a couple of more pumps. As for the air lock, it will just bleed itself out if there is any, just keep the revs up until the engine runs smooth again.
That’s just how we prefer to do it, hence the disclaimer at the start.
First class job, well done , I have one of the first type of filter wrenches which they have at Lidl once a year and they are brilliant
really good video but I would recommend an oil flusher to flush any old crap oil out of the system

hubby said your starter belt is slightly too loose check the tension in the middle of the belt at largest distance between the two pulleys hope this helps

Well done doing your own service it's the best way to know your engine and fix faults . justables are ok but they can round off nuts and bolts making them hard to remove or tighten .

I love this video made it look so easy compared to the vlog hahahahah vaccum pumps quite good I have one I can send down the oil dip stick hole saves all the pumping hahaha, your belt explination was spot on 90.c no more so many boaters will only look for cracks or tears, another good point to do is buy everything again so you have spare.... Amazing video tho guys you could add a engine mount check every now and again with a breaker bar I have seen engines come loose into engine bays 🙄🙄🙄🙄 where they vibrate loose on the mounts.... Keep up the great vids 😁😁

Hi both, do you think your gearbox oil needs changing at the same time 😊
Each engine is different and it seems that different boaters do it at different intervals so we kept it out just incase 😊
There's no such thing as too often, but there is such thing as not often enough.
I'm not a fan of using a screwdriver on the oil filter; if you do it wrong you won't be able to run the engine until what is left is removed and a new filter fitted. Just *make sure* the black sealing ring from the old filter isn't still attached to the engine! Otherwise you're going to need an awful lot of kitchen towel. 🙂
Also the alternator is _usually_ supposed to have around 5mm of deflection with moderate finger pressure at the center point (longest stretch) but the main thing is not to overload the bearings with it being too tight. If it's too loose you'll know about it as it'll squeal.
*Edit:* No valve adjustments on that engine?
Yeah we really didn’t want to use the screwdriver and as we said it’s definitely a last resort! Good shout about the black sealing ring 😊 not sure what a valve adjustment is I’m afraid!
@@BoatTime I've just had a look and you _might_ have hydraulic (self adjusting) tappets. Appears there are a few engine models out there for narrowboats and you'd need your service manual to find out. Generally older engines require the periodic adjustment of the valves; it's a simple procedure and helps prevent rough running and potential engine damage.
One suggestion is to equip yourselves with the proper tools for the job, adjustable spanners are not a good idea from an engineering point of view.
For sure, we need to invest in some proper ones!
