- Ralph is busy with my very wet and sad looking Vetus and I’m busy sorting the fireplace and the bow of the boat. I find rotten flooring so there is a big task ahead

Lucky lucky James no engine required.
Your sloe patrol expertise is going to give you all the necessary skills to make this boat brilliant.
Take care.
Who ever gifted you this boat is a gem of a human. It could not have gone to a better person. You needed a break but this boat needed you, too. Much love to the subscriber who did this. It has benefitted you, your children, your viewers and everyone involved. I hope it comes back around to him! Also, I wondered why you were taking that nice stove out but THANK GOD you did! what a mess. Cheers, James!
He is a gem you’re right. I’ve met him a couple times and he’s got some stories to tell !! My story resonated with him and he wanted to help me get more space for the kids as his boat was just sitting there, not being used and costing him a few grand a year to slowly decay. He knew I could give it a new lease of life and he also knew I had no upfront funds to do it with. He offered to front the initial costs and recoup his money from the sale of sloe patrol. Therefore the love and support given by everyone to sloe patrol will not be lost when she sells, as she provided this boat….along with that gem of a subscriber. I’m glad everyone seems to be enjoying the videos and the build because I am loving this !!!
new career as a boat flipper hey, or renovate for others!!!! money to be made :)
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Wow, what a wonderful story! It's truly heartwarming. I agree with Lynn...this boat needs you with your know-how and skills, and I'm sure your wonderful benefactor without a doubt knew she would be in good hands! It's wonderful how it's all working out, and lovely to think that Sloe Patrol is making all of this possible for you and your family
@@alanrichardson1672 what are you on about - I wasn't offering.
@@alanrichardson1672 he's not doing it on a 'professional ' basis though, he's not a rich man, he's intending to live on the boat. You can't really begrudge someone having a bit of luck for once, if he makes a mess of this, then he makes a mess but I don't blame him for having a go.
YEAH!!!! That is such good news about the engine James!!! So happy for you. This is really happening, and it will be you and the children’s home before you know it. You look tired but happy, and less stressed. It seems that this is exactly what you needed. Thanks goodness for the kindness of strangers. The man has done a very good deed. I really respect the gracious way you speak about him, and you make sure to point out that the condition of the boat is not his fault. You are a good man. Your children will have these vlogs as a testament to that. Thanks for sharing, and hope the engine bay cleaning goes well.
😊🤗🙏 Kathy
The hard work and confidence you are showing in renovating this boat is going to make wonderful entertainment for all who know and follow you. Well done James.
Thanks pal
Glad you’re enjoying the vids
Looks like you lucked out with the engine! Almost BRAND NEW! Minor repairs are easy - and hopefully cheap!
If you can get that Granite Hearth out in one piece - you could easily re-use it or sell it if you don't like it. Granite can be VERY Expensive!
What wonderful news on the engine james you must be relieved and thanking god for the grand person whi gifted the boat to you good luck now the oldies Ann and David👍🤞🙏🏻
Good result with the state of the engine. You must be so relieved :)
That's a load off with the engine. It looked like the fire place and the gas pipe were a time bomb waiting to happen. I'm loving this build James. Power on. Cheers
Incredible progress, you're crushing it, James. Please don't work too hard, self care is also important. Cheers!
I’m having a week off at the end of may for crick boat show and I’ve got weekends with the kids so can’t really do much with them in tow - I’ll kick back
yeah..under boat de-scaling..that's hard work
Loving the new boat build, good luck James
Wow that is awesome news on the engine. Nice stove for a big house. That slate hearth be good to. Buggar on the damp. Better found now though. All the best.
Just a blast from the past watching This loving it 😃
Good luck with the renovation as I have found out lately you will need very deep pockets
Sorry hit the thumbs down by mistake, I rectified it, loving these vlogs James! Best wishes Christine x
Evening young James. That engine lift was like a heart operation at Royal Papworth hospital lol 😆 that was fantastic that no water had penetrate the engine and hydro locked it up 👍🏻 Ralph seems like a genuine geyser 👍🏻 Looking forward to seeing it run and fitted back in project 57 👏🏻 You not doing buy me a coffee James so we can all at least help a little 🤔 You still got the Dagenham dustbin fiesta? Quick turnaround for the alternator & starter motor 👍🏻 You work so hard matey. Cheers for another cracking video Stevie 😎
Great news on the engine 😊. This is SO exciting James 😊. Just imagine what everything will be like when you are ready to set sail with your family. Good luck 👍
Yeah should be a better ride
With some projects, everything touched just points to something worse. With project 57/58, lady luck is with you. The condition of the Vetus seems like a small miracle. And I bet the floor rot is limited to that corner. Yes!
Whew. Sigh of relief that the engine is good. And your ballast is dry. And, thanks for the music!
Small observation. With the amount of 'Pitting' on the sides, seriously think about a Two Pack resin based protector. It may be a tad more expensive, but will last you up to 10 years.
The fireplace I took out of my boat was the same, tiles just glued straight to the plywood lining under the gunwales which was pretty scorched 😱
Disaster waiting to happen, and scary to think how many older boats on the cut are probably the same …..
Good news about the engine. I would check for rainwater ingress around the frame of the front door if the sealant is failing or cracking. If it leaks, it can run down the inside of the frame below the door and into the floor. Much of it will evaporate, but where it is trapped under the hearth it cannot escape.
Amazing - I thought this engine would be a write off. Great to see you’ve got decent guys helping out with this!
Vetus will be proud to watch her start for the first time after submersion - they are a damn good lot here that’s for sure
I'd treat yourself to getting the boatyard to grit blast the engine bay and get it coated in the best paint money can buy - so it lasts. Great news about the engine :)
You can’t really grit blast engine bay as it fills with material in minutes then it all has to be sucked out and carry on. Elbow grease is the best method annoyingly and so far I’ve scraped it all and taken off main rust - the rest to be honest is not too bad - wire wheels for a day should do it. Then red oxide then garage floor paint which is the most hard wearing paints for an oily wet bilge
Not checking the injectors and dropping the oil pan to inspect is just asking for future trouble.
So happy for you and your family ! Thats so wonderful that the engine can be fixed up. Look after yourself James with all the hard work your giving the project.
Love seeing the new project getting underway at pace!
Pace is the name of the game. We’ll that and doing a good job
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt That's what drew me in to the channel when you first launched it!
Keep em coming James , preparing myself for the same 👌🏼👊🏻
Good news on the engine 😊well done on your progress so far 😊 nice video 😊thank you
I’m hocked mate I can’t wait to see how it goes good luck and keep up the great work 👍👍👍
What a project James , another great video, Good luck with that Floor hope that's the worst!!
That fire area looked terrible once it was out. That black discoloration means it was close to bursting into flames!
Hope all is well. Best wishes to you and the family.
Hope your energy and enthusiasm keeps you going long enough to have it ready to be moved into the water when you need to be out of there. Best wishes, Kevin
Me too - to be honest I hope it lasts past tomorrow as I’m spending the whole day grinding back the engine bay. Then the next day stripping and painting the vetus and then the next day stripping and painting the baseplate.
Urgh- I now want this dirty work to pass
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt 1 day at a time James, with plenty of liquid 🙂
Hey James I'm enjoying this. It's like rebuilding slow patrol. Keep them coming. Wish you all the best in the coming weeks.
*Sloe
Thanks so much Tim - I’m loving this even more than sloe patrol tbh - this one is a real joy to work on - glad you’re enjoying them
Hello there, really enjoying these videos and your choice of accompanying music is excellent. Best wishes.
I love the inspiring music, I am expecting something amazing and you always deliver... 🙂
Love the safety glasses on your head 😂😂 H&s as always x
Happy to be going on with you. Happy day.
Doing well James. Best wishes
For me the engine was never in doubt, it’s a marine Engine that’s water cooled, so the water couldn’t get in, the starter and other things yes but they can be replaced, it looks a good solid engine that if you maintain it every day should last a long time. But hey all’s looking great 😊
Good video thanks lee
Cracking on.....😊👍
This seems both daunting and exciting. However you appear to be far more content than you were when working in London. it is great to see and be part of your adventure, again. 🏆
OMG you have no idea. Content doesn’t come close. Imagining being back in boardrooms talking about bloody business rates and property taxation is nearly as painful as imagining me spending the next two days sorting out that engine bay !!!!
Thanks as always
You have landed on your feet with that engine that was great to hear its a runner as for the granite keep it for your fire place glad it was just the wood that was wet and you sussed out the cause Happy days ahead
great news about the engine. Also good call in removing the tiles, interesting to see how close it was to the whole boat burning. Code 20 years ago isnt the code now but I dont think that fire place ever met any code. Rotten floor isnt a really big issue as you have identified why it was wet (hole in roof). Good day all round.
Yep all in all - a good day. Lighting that fire with that protection would have been a bit scary after a while
Hi James, well the boat is coming along lovely mate I'd love to have the energy that you have to get my widebeam finished,if project 57/58 turns out as good as slow patrol it will be a lovely boat mate. I saw your last vlog and watched you tackle your fireplace, if you're thinking of selling your harth I would be interested in buying it off of you if it's the right size. Keep up the very entertaining and very good work mate, your vlogs are top notch. Cheers.
I must say on sloe patrol I was a bit surprised about the complicated stove install I thought tiles fair enough but the other legislation I thought was a bit OTT. I don't anymore that charring of the wood behind the stove that use to be there is frightening, beggers belief how it got a boat safety cert. 😲 glad the previous owner didn't use the new stove which was no doubt bigger.
Have you thought about putting your bedroom at the bow, and the kids at the stern. Reduce hallway and maximize your space.
very nice indeed
Who the fluck gets ‘gifted’ a boat like that… Jesus. But I’m over the jealous. Karma came around I guess... I hope mine does. Have a great time fixing it up you lucky bastard ;)
Oh Lord, my blood ran cold when I saw those heat/scratch marks and then saw the gas line! Oh Lord!
What colour engine paint will you be going for I think you should put it to a vote
You could go a nice pink😂
Great news about the engine! Hopefully the rot is in just that location, fingers crossed!
i would assuem, its the condensation cused by the fire that used to be their, and the cold brick and.or granite below it., i bet a therrmo break of soem sort woudl be an idea to stop ti happening in the future. (im just guessing btw im no expert)
I said that engine would probably be fine, and I'm very happy to see I was right! Even better than OK, in fact - I presume the gearbox is OK as well? Apart from the rusted out drive plate springs, which is not really surprising.
I'll sound a note of warning though, and that is it's wiring loom. I'd expect it to still work right now, but what does happen is that water gets drawn down into the wire via capillary action when it's submerged over time. and that can cause the individual strands to corrode inside the insulation.
Most likely it'll be OK though, but perhaps let it dry out and give it all a good going over with wd40, concentrating on any joins/terminals where the core might have been exposed to water. Maybe do that a few times! Check for any obvious corrosion on any terminals as well, dissimilar metal joins are where it's most likely to occur.
As it happens, submersion under water can cause less problems than being generally wet and in the air - see your waterline for a good example ;)
A bit scary to see how the wall behind the stove has started to turn black. Good to see you know where the traps might be
Landed on your feet again, James. What a bonus that the engine turns. Let's hope it runs...
All the best, mate.
P.S. Is that a no to the drone?
What was the place you took the autonator in Uxbridge please ? Its ok found out in later episode, thanks 👍
What year was the boat built?
Chuffed about the engine, don't cut too many corners in the haste, you don't need things to revisit at a later date. Take care.
👍
It is sweet narrowboat - did he just give it you or did you pay a nominal fee , usually 1£
Where the water ingress to cause the rotting under the stove?
I wish , what a gift
Can you tell us how much it costs to keep Poj.58 dry docked there per day/week/month?
Maybe you should call it project 57 and a bit.😂
I noticed that you emptied the wet vac (containing rainwater and battery acid) directly onto the ground, along with the water that jetwashed the engine. Where does this waste water go to? I'm not an eco-warrior, just genuinely interested :)
@@IDKline I thought as much and I wasn't grinding an axe about it 🙂 Gotta be practical about these things.
The stuff behind the fireplace looks like plasterboard..
Looks like Gypsum board, AKA Drywall.
Engine/motorcycle scissor-jack? (To lift stove up to the deck-level?)
Or two strong lads from the wharf
💜💙💚
Has the fireplace been claimed yet James
Yes it has sorry mate
Scary, seeing that darkened wood.
I didn't realize how short "Sloe Patrol" is (43'), years ago I heard that a 57 foot narrow boat is the best overall size for a solo operator? ;-)
it's the longest 'go anywhere' for locks and turns on the canals, yes.
the bigger the boat, the bigger the pit to throw your money into is the usual rule
Are you going to sell sloe patrol?
👍👌❤🇨🇦,
Just thinking in legal terms .
The moto of the story is have no more children 😂 because we will be looking at a 80ft boat 😂🎉😊
I’m not having more kids - don’t worry - but I can’t seem to stop the ones I do have growing a lot bigger
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt bless them... I was joking x
Upcoming days no comments?? You haven’t got the time read them.🤭
With Narrowboats there is no clear ownership document - it is not like buying a car . It is done on trust ....
👍
