    I just wanted to say how much I respect and appreciate the amount of work you put into your vlogs. They come out looking so easy and well edited one doesn’t give it much thought to how much time and thought goes into making the video we see. A lot of editing Decisions have to be made an extra thought put into reinserting sections of the video for the viewers reference. Just really exceptional I wanted you to know but I noticed it. • @chriscross9505
    @chriscross9505 5 лет назад +5

    I just know your boat is gonna be a real stunner !! That Vetus engine is presented the best of all the available makes. But, I'm being really swayed by the Beta Marine hybrid option. The ability to sail silently on electric when you want to and never having to worry about trying to draw too much power at any one time for all appliances is all very tempting. One hour of diesel cruising stores enough electricity for 2 hours of electric powered cruising so even tho the system costs more there are saving to be made on fuel (and maybe a positive effect on any resale price too). Thanks for all your educational videos and all the laughs along the way. btw I am so with you on 2 facing side hatches at the dinette, in fact I'm leaning towards maybe even another one or two as well in other locations (if they are fitted with double glazed, thermal break, casement windows and steel shutters on the outside for security then why not?) All the best lads !!

    Just for for the nerds, One might ask why a gear box needs cooling, it doesn’t, what it the heat exchanger does is warm the engine oil to get it to the right viscosity for the gearbox. just check that the full pump hasn’t got a finial filtering it. Last tip versus used to say that the oil and filter need changing ink every 125 Hrs as against other engine types that specify 250hrs both these figures are based on anticipated annual usage, the Venus being a yacht engine and beta’s being sold as a canal engine.They are both guessing. I found that at 125 hrs the oil was coming out clean ( monthly hrs for my boat) I changed the filter at 250hrs oil at 125 gearbox at 250.

    Excellent vlogs guys, interesting talk through of the Vetus. A point on the alternators, would or could you have a travel power alternator retro fitted for a 240 supply whilst on the move . For washing machine microwave etc..... Good luck and health to cruise.

      Yeah, we have a 3kW Inverter installed, so with the 990Ah of batteries, the 95 amp alternator and 600watts of solar panels, we'll be able to use a washing machine, and all the other 230v stuff :)

    Love your blogs.. just found them today and am already up to number 28. I do have a question about the batteries.... It looks like some of them are located under a medal structure - what happens if one of the semi hidden batteries goes bad?? do you have to remove the exposed ones to get back to the hidden ones??

  • @popeyeatsea

    At 1:29 you show the battery connections, these are cross over each other. This is creating a significant fire risk should these cables rub through. I realise this risk has been mitigated by using some spit conduit, but due to the nature of a vessel and the vibration especially in that area, there is significant risk of these cables rubbing through and creating a fire/explosion danger, maybe not now but in the ?near? future. It would be advisable to look at an alternative route or configuration of the wiring whilst the vessel is still in the workshop. BTW enjoying your show.

      @@FoxesAfloat Previous experience with the same brand is a perfect reason to go with them again. • @Stubones999

    Why did you choose a Vetus and not Canaline engine? Good to see the Vetus engine has twin alternators so you have two separate charging systems. That way, if you lose one alternator, you can switch house batteries and crank your engine.

      Hi Judi. Over the summer we saw all the engine brands in action, on boats and at Crick. We didn’t really find anything negative about any of them. We like Vetus because we had one on our last boat and we didn’t have any issues with it. We’ve gone for the 42hp so that we have decent power for both canals and rivers.
      Best of luck with your build! xx

      @@FoxesAfloat here's an interesting question... the first vlog of yours I seen was one from summer. You mentioned how well your solar had charged the batteries and you had nothing else to do with the power ... what if you had an electric motor at the rear also and could cruise using solar during the summer ? Even if it was 1 day in 7 ? That's a days cruising for free 👍

  • @barthandelus8340
    @barthandelus8340 2 года назад +1

    Is there a minimum depth that you have to consider when planning cruising routes, and are some canals too shallow due to the weight of the narrowboat? All those batteries and furniture installations must way tens of tons!

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  2 года назад +1

      Our depth ' draught is 2' 2" and we are OK, some boats have a much deeper draught. A lot of people ask, what do you do if you fall in the canal and we just answer, stand up 🤣 Most canals you can stand up and the water would be about chest hight xx

    I see in your engine bay that you have non slip on the floors witch is cool and I've never seen that before. is the engine bay staying that colour now, or is it going in the same colour as your boat..? .as at the moment you can see and find anything if you drop it in the bottom.
    happy for you both, well done won't be long now. xx

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  5 лет назад

      Hi Ray! Thanks for your lovely comment! Yes, the engine bay is completed and the colour is staying as it is. The silver is the same (although unlacquered) colour as it will be outside. The black areas are where the non-slip coating is, so they are where it's best to step in and out of the engine bay. Painting the outside starts this week :)

    Technical question here (sorry). The Vetus Diesel Engine M4.17 42hp is available with two options on the M150 gearbox. A 2.09:1 ratio or 2.82:1 ratio. I assume that you have the 2:1 ratio, meaning, when Shaun pushed the engine to full speed on the Ribble return, at 2,500 RPM, the prop was doing 1200RPM?
