How to DIY Powder Coat a Yeti Cup!

- Have you ever wondered how to powder coat anything. In this video are gonna show you how to powder coat a yeti cup and this application process would apply to just about any kind apart some parts are gonna be smaller some are gonna be larger some are going to hang from the powder coating booth and some are gonna set on top of a piece of flashing using a cookie sheet as we did. The great thing is powder coating is a simple process that you can even do at home on your own.

@@gracieshepardtothemax1743 I would look at a compound miter saw from one of your local hardware stores. If you want to really be on a budget a circular saw and a large speed square would work.

Interesting and thorough video. Note that the nitrile gloves you use, which are great for many uses, are not recommended for acetone. I found this when cleaning heavy grease off metal with acetone and nitrile gloves. The gloves are highly permeable to acetone and break down fairly quickly. Google "chemical resistant glove chart" for further info.

No you can use alcohol, windex, simple green. All have worked without issues. As for the torch, I only do it now if I see obvious signs of lint.

Great video! I’m new to powder coating. Question. As your turning the sheet while you’re coating, you’re touching it while it’s connected. Are you letting go of the charge?, I have the step one from harbor freight. Turn then charge it again? Hope that makes sense.
Joaquin Ryder as long as it’s not triggered your not charging. That said it’s more like a static charge than touching a hot wire.

My daughter and I have been customizing tumblers and have considered purchasing a powder coat system. This has been very helpful to show us what we will need to get started. One question I have is when you're going to use a vinyl decal I'm sure you put it on after the powder coating is cured and cool, but do you put some sort of clear coat over it after you apply the decal? If so, what do you use?
Sue Barnes thanks for the question. I do put a clear over it. I was able to track down a clear that can be cured at 300. I haven't ruined any vinyl at that temp. Currently I'm getting it from another PC that is breaking up a large batch, but we are working on getting someone to retail it so others can access it.

Have you ever had problems with the new RTIC cups. The ones with the powder coat bottom. Some cups the bottom cover popping out when cooking the paint? if yes how did you fix that problem. Thank you
Are you saying that there is an air bubble coming out where the cap on the bottom slips over the cup, or that the bottom actually popped off?

With the 1st generation of RTIC never had that happened. With new generation of RTIC, Its happened more than 5 times.
Tony Marquez I have only had that happen on used cups and we were able to press them back on, that said, we stopped using RTIC about 2 years ago because of quality issues. Not that specific issue but things like the seal on the cup being loose. You could try curing at a lower temp for longer.

Amber Shackelford nothing special. Best thing to do is try to pull the cup sooner between coats.
I want to Glitter my cup!! I have looked everywhere and I cannot find any info/forums on this. I am thinking this is a top coat with glitter in it, but I cannot find it on Prismatic (or anywhere else for that matter) suggestions? Love your videos and have had alot of success with the solid colors, now I want to get a little crazy! :-D
I know there are base coats with sparkle. They are rough to the touch and require topcoats. I've also seen some who are doing large glitter with mod podge.
But do they then clear powder coat over that? I KNOW I've seen them and they makers swear they are real glitter, not metal flakes in a base powder coat. I can't for the life of me figure out how they are doing it??? If the glitter is solvent resistant (up to 350 degrees) could you theoretically clear top coat and wet sand until you reach the desired coverage/smoothness?

Sorry I missed this comment. Flow meets the powder is changing temporarily to a liquid and guiding. It’ll be shiny.
I'm wanting to use polyflake glitter over a metallic teal. It looked great until I put the clear over the glitter flakes. the clear made the flakes dull and now it just looks like bubbles instead of glitter.. What would you recommend I try in order to keep the shine? Thanks in advance.. -Alyssa

Not a dumb question at all. There is no insulation, but there is a vacuum. Theoretically the seal could break, and the vacuum would be lost. That said it has not happened to any cups we have coated. ruclips.net/video/xDztiz6FOnY/видео.html
So, what I'm trying to do is make the mt. On an ozark cup one color, and shoot the cup another.... so far my heat tape has been reluctant to work with me. Any tips? Or tricks you might know? These are my cups btw I dont sell or haven't been even trying to sell anything. This is just for me

What are some must have colors when starting out?
+crafting with Roxy I guess it depends on your customer base. Black, Tiffany Blue, Red, Orange, Candy Red. If I get special requests and it's just for one cup, I'll buy it and charge the customer a special order fee. Eventually you'll have a ton of powders and if you don't have what someone wants exactly you may have something close enough.
The logo more then likely was put on with cermark,or possibly coated in black first using a vinyl cutout.
I use a media blaster. The vinyl cutout masks the areas I want to protect. The image is created by removing metal where the negative space is left unprotected.
How many 30oz. cups do you think you can paint from a 1lb. powder coat paint? Also where do you buy your paint? Are the Harbor Freight powder coat guns okay? I think am wanting to start powder coating cups. Do you sell the stands? Thanks
If your gun isn't wasting powder 30-40 tumblers. I haven't used an HF gun yet. I tried picking one up last week just so I could answer this frequent question, but the were out. I do sell the stands. Send me a note and I'll give you the details.
I airbrush fishing lures but I don't know much about powder coating. Why use a powder coating on the tumbler? Does it bond well to metal or does it create a nice effect with the clear coat or provide a desired texture?
+Yancy Smith Durability is the biggest reason, but you can do all kinds of cool effects and there are 1,000's of colors. It's just cool to work with.
ok. started powder coating yesterday. I bought some Dollar Tree stainless steel bowls to practice on. Everything is good. We even did a vinyl cameo cut out, and everything was smooth. At this point, we thought we were pretty cool, so we decided to try a Yeti. The powder would not stick, at all. my setup is fine. I tried 3 different Yeti's. After trying the Yetis, I did another cheap bowl, and all was good. Thoughts?
How are you grounding the YETI?
+bugmanchad I have an 8 ft copper ground rod with 4 gauge copper wire attached. I coiled the wire up for the cup to sit on. I attached the powder coater alligator clip to the wire also.
+Bryan Peak seems like that would be sufficient. Try getting a spark between the yeti and the gun. When your switch is depressed get the tip of the gun close enough that it sparks. If you have a good spark the next questions I have would be type of gun and powder.

I have the same gun you use in your videos yet I can't figure out why it doesn't spray the same..idk if the hose from compressor to gun is to long or if the compressor is just too old or what. Any suggestions to try? The gun will not spray powder at the recommended psi or if it does it has like surges of powder..
Get a decent psi gauge. Most don't measure accurately. Second remove the blue diffuser. It causes powder to go everywhere.
+ManCraftingTM I bought a separate guage. Should I have it at the gun or at the compressor? I also took the blue deflector off.
+Shawntae Moore put it at the gun. Also, make sure your cup has no more than 1/3 full with powder. Full... Powder goes every where.
when you take the cup out of the oven and remove it from the flashing are you removing a stencil where the etching was? or you removed the stencil after powder coating and before it went in oven?
In this video we are using a translucent gold over a sandblasted logo.
I am sandblasting cups so if I use a translucent paint over entire cup then the etched design will come out dark after oven?
Darker. Yes.
Why brand of powder coat stripper do you use? I used to work with dekote from eastwood until it was pulled from its inventory.

Do you scuff or blast the cups? have you had any issues with chipping? also do you need to use an Out-gas primer? I've had some done that are chipping easy. I've bought all the stuff to do it myself but want to make sure i don't skip anything important as I sell them. thanks in advance !
No issues chipping. Make sure your checking the temps on the part with a laser thermometer. Improper cure will cause the powder to be brittle. The temperature settings on ovens are notoriously inaccurate.
Also, no blasting or scuffing. The brushed finish is adequate.

I've been trying to do a tumbler with stripes but every time I take the tape off, the powder coating comes off as well. would you happen to have any tips on how I can stripe the tumbler without the paint coming off? any tips are appreciated! maybe even a video :)
Are you using high temp tape? Make sure the first coat is at least 70% cured prior to taping. After recoating remove tape after second coat starts to flow.

To remove the powder, or prep? The only time I’ve sandblaster them was to create designs by masking with vinyl. What were you wanting to do?
is it true they dont cool drinks the same after being baked? something about the high temp messing with the vacuum insulation on those cups
I actually did a video on that. It seems to have no impact and there was actually less melting in the powdercoated one.

How did you keep the cup from flowing together with the flashing the cup sat on?
jed7514 I didn’t. I had to clean up the edges. I have long since started using a stand. You can see it in a bunch of my other videos. Perfectly clean edges every time.

Not much. Maybe 1/2 ounce.
My question is about the yeti products and others like them I thought you weren't supposed to heat them, does heating them mess with the vacuum seal it has between the walls that makes it work so well keeping things cold or hot for so long?
We have only had one cup pop the seal and it was an RTIC.

what kind of oven are you using? How did you wire it in the garage?
+JP I currently use a standard electric oven that most people use in their kitchen. It's not ideal, but it got me into powdercoating on the cheap. You can find them on Craigslist or at a ReStore type place fairly cheap. I added a circuit to my panel and ran a 6 gauge wire to a 220 outlet.

+Andy Kaufman No it doesn't come off. It is extremely durable. Powder coating is used on children's toys and furniture sold every day. It has the distinction of being one of the most environmentally and consumer friendly products on the market today.

Did you sand the rim after powder coat had been cured? I see that u had some overspray, did it melt to the rim?
On the outside? We used a scotchbrite pad to smooth the transition. Since that time we have modified our method and no longer use the cookie sheet. We use the stand with a insulator to keep from having any uneven edges.
ManCraftingTM Can you explain this further....the insulator what is that and not using the cookie sheets?
Sheryl Clark we have a video showing the stands. I now use a blue Scott paper towel on the stand and get a clean edge every time.
I have a question for you that I can't seem to find the answer online. I know that after flow out you start the cure process but what do you consider flow out? Is it when the powder starts to look wet and still grainy or is it after it is completely flowed and smooth? Just trying to figure out when to time the cure. After its flowed smooth or just started and wet and grainy looking. Thank you!
I'm guessing you are using Eastwood Powders?
+ManCraftingTM yes and some are the powder coat store.
You'll want to see the cup look completely wet on Eastwood. Still make sure that within the first 10 minutes that the part reaches pmt. On the PPB I believe they give time from PMT. So as soon as the cup temp measures the temp on the label. Usually 375-400 start your timer.

Isn't the coating wet when coming out of the oven. In other words shouldn't grabbing it right away leave marks?
I wait until the cup is about 120-130F. I also use lint free or nitrle gloves when handling them so that I don't get any prints on the cups. The first thing out of the oven is way too hot to handle. In many of my videos, I actually pull the cup after flow, let cool and remove vinyl mask and then put back in the oven for full cure. -Chad
May I ask why you use the flashing along with the aluminum foil???? TIA!
We use the foil to protect the cookie sheet, but if we relied on it solely, it would stick to the cup. The foil just isn't durable enough to allow us to remove the cup. The flashing comes apart easily. That said, we are working on another method currently. Hopefully I'll have it together in the next week or so.
+bugmanchad OH! Ok, I understand now. I've been using the metal poles with metal flanges on the bottom but I have to tape each cup to keep powder from going inside. I liked the method you were using. No taping required! lol :) I don't have any flashing laying around though.
+Adreanna Flick it's cheap. That's a nice benefit. We are working on another no tape method that uses a tree. Once we have it altogether I'll post a short video on how it works.

The stainless tumblers already have a surface finish adequate to hold the powder. I just clean it real well.
The inside of my tumbler seems to have a bit of residue after the process. How can I clean it off?
Gator Rican use a black Scotch Brite pad or 200 Grit sand paper wet.

Grayson Fair depends on your goal. If you are leaving it on after. If your removing it, before. I have several videos on doing exactly that. Actually both.
What is the trick to having the etch come out. I blasted several designs on the cup and then coated and baked and it just completely covers the design. I see your design under brass yellow, but I wasted a whole day designing logo cutting and the putting it on cup, then blasting and taking vinyl off just to have t all covered up with powder coat. Please help :)
We use 70 Grit Aluminum Oxide to get the darker image when blasting. Then hit it with the candy or transparent colors which seems to enhance the difference. Not sure if any other media will create the same effect.
How do you do your artwork prior to powder coating?
I use a vinyl cutter. Sometimes I sandblasted the negative space, sometimes I applied vinyl and pulled just after the powder flows to reveal the stainless.

Ok you have way less waste than I do! Guess that setting really glues it to the cup. I just have the original Eastwood gun

Christopher Cohen probably 30-50 depending on the powder. Some go on the tumbler better and there isn't a lot of waste.
do u get little dots of dirt when the powder coat is cured ? if so how do u fix it
No, If I did I would sand and apply a clear coat.
Did you have to blast the cup to rough it up so the paint would stick better? Is you etching done with a laser or is it finished polished steel that was not blasted?
The YETi or RTIC cups we have been coating are all brushed stainless steel. So the powder sticks just fine with nothing more than an acetone bath. The designs are blasted with aluminum oxide. But that's for customizing not so the powder will adhere.

+Trevis Sweet We have several suppliers. Initially we used Eastwood since the package I bought had a starter kit of powder. Since then we've used AllPowderPaints.com and the PowderCoatStore.com. For us APP is great because delivery is usually a day or two max.

Justin Copeland weird. I never saw this comment. The actual powder can range from $10 to $25 a pound. That said it lasts forever. Maybe 1/4 to 1/2 ounce per tumbler. So easily 50 tumbler out of one pound.

Has anyone figured out how to stop red powder from bleeding through the top coat color. ( on a two coat tumbler)
jeff fletcher some colors are going to bleed. The more clear in the color the more likely it will bleed. The colors that aren't blended with a lot of clear in them from the manufacturer don't bleed. Even two similar colors will have different results. Flatter colors don't bleed.
I started to do this, just as something to do in my free time. I ran into a problem with the texture of even smooth powders. no matter the powder, they all come out with a ripple texture. any suggestions on how to fix this issue?
nshimala what gun and powder are you using? Did you use an earth ground?
I have an earth ground, harbor freight gun and use powder from a lot of places, but mostly from Prismatic Powders
nshimala I'm guessing it's the HF gun putting on the powder too heavy. Try putting less powder in the hopper.

Forgive me if these couple questions have been asked. What are you hanging inside the oven? I'm intrigued by how dark the "sandblasted area" turned out. What sandblasting medium did you use? Have you found that different medium will produce different shades of finished logos? My wife will soon be angry with you as I've found another avenue to spend paper!!
I use Aluminum Oxide 70 Grit. It definitely creates the darker image. Nothing else I've tried or others have tried will create this effect. My wife was the same way until she saw the reaction of friends and family when we gave out gifts. This is the first hobby that is cash flow positive. The piece that is hanging is a sample of the color. Just a small piece of sheet metal cut out for this purpose.
bugmanchad Man, I'm all over this. Honestly, have heard the term "powder coating" so many times but never had any idea what it meant. Was fascinated with your video. One last question. Watch for the powder to flow - color me stupid....what does that mean exactly.
+Peter Martin so powder is made of various resins. Essentially heat causes the resin to melt together creating a smooth surface. So when the powder flows, it's actually hit the melting temperature.
What does the cure do? At school we just let it flow and take it out.
Jonas DLG flow is in the first few minutes. The cure time is started after flow. Curing is what makes powdercoating a durable lasting finish. Otherwise it will scratch easier or may flake off.

How many Yeti Cups do you usually coat with a lb container of powder?
That's a good question. I don't think we even use an ounce per cup. Maybe half an ounce. 8oz seems to last a long time. I have several Eastwood powders the I got with my gun and some Ive used at least 8-10 times and still have a lot left in the container.

If you pre heat it till it's about 425 it will stick better and you won't waste any powder. I learnt this the hard way. I was doing my wheels and I was about to put it in the oven and I hit something causing all the powder to fall off. Also what paint did you use I really like it

The powder is listed as Candy or Transparent depending on the vendor you buy from. The design process is covered in a few other videos I have. If your on a phone the link may not show in the video. I guess I should add links in the description. I'll do that now.
+bugmanchad powder coating is in high demand. down here were I live. Everyone wants cups and other things done. This has helped me out. Do you remove decals as well. If so what material do you use.
I suppose that would depend on what I was removing the decal from. Stainless it's easy. Just peel what you can with heat and a removal wedge. Then clean up left behind glue with Isopropyl Alcohol or Acetone. On painted surfaces that's another issue.
