The Mumbai used car dealers that Kartikeya was referring to are Caravan Cars (Sherry) in Malad and Dhruv (Dhruv) Automobiles, Mahim. If you visit them, do let us know your experience.

Another tip: Never buy a car which is popular among taxi / rental owners.
I know about one such taxi company owner, who used to buy new car, run it for 3-5lakh km , reset meter and then sell it.
Another trick they played is that they would get annual service done at authorized dealership as per scheduled intervals. But before going there, they would reset meter to a much lower value, which is then recorded in service record. Once the engine wears out, they get it repaired under warranty. Rest all intermediate service is done on local workshop. So as per service record and odo, car will clock 50k km in 5 years while actual will be more like 5lakh km.

Loved the points about having a guy to check the used vehicle out. Things that I would like to add are:
    - Check the vehicle out both during the day and night. Testing it during the night time will reveal a whole lot of issues like the glass pane visibility, the headlight situation, etc
    - Check the insurance expiry date and if it is expiring anytime soon, then negotiate the differential amount out of the book value of the car/bike.
    - If the car is being sold anywhere near to the 100k ODO mark, then it's better to do a simply health check to see if there are any upcoming replacements for wear and tear which would add to the cost of the vehicle.
    - And most importantly, do a Parivaahan check to see if there are any Challans pending for the registered vehicle.

In 2016, we (my parents) went second hand car shopping. We lucked upon a fantastic little POLO Comfortline 1.2 TSI. It was third hand. The first owner used it for 33000 kms. The second owner got the car for his son. So they had it completely serviced at the Authorised Service Centre for him. New tyres and all. They used it for another 11000 kms and were shifting abroad so they wanted to sell it off. This is where we came in. We got the car checked and got it for just ₹3,50,000. We just had to replace the fan belt. That's all. Since we have put about 20,000 kms, everyday city, long trips and everything in between. It is perfect. And the Music System is just soo good. Overall it's just a case of too good to be true but it was true.

    Used Car/Bike parameters:
    1. Flooding-affected cars/bikes
    2. Drain the oil and put magnet on it to check the block condition. (Free oil refill for the owner/ Deal will be a great deal )
    3. FMAI Index (Failure mode analysis Index) Usually you get information in the manual about which parts need replacement based on the millage/age of the part. You can understand the cost impact within 1 year of your purchase.
    4. Discountinued vehicles (more than 5 years) and if the overall sales of a particular model are the lowest selling model in the category.
    Bodywork:
    1. The gasket test ( Check for rusting)
    2. Radiator (Check for bends/ damaged fins)
    3. Chasis: Front bulkhead, front Wheel housing, front quarter panels
    4. Engines bay: red flag if greasy near engine head & engine mount condition.
    Clutch & gearshift:
    1. Spongy clutch
    2. Ratlling from the gearshift

Great discussion. I stopped biking some time in 2014/15. I wanted to get back to it but i was not sure what type to buy. So for 2 months I rented a bike for a week from Royal Brothers and once I got used to biking again and went and bought a new bike. I spent around 20k in total on renting different bikes and scoters and I don't regret it. Because if i had spent over 1.5L or more on a new bike and then see that i don't like the bike then it becomes a costlier affair to sell it and buy another bike. Thank you for the tip on the used car and bike market

Great podcast!!! My 2 cents on loans. While home loan top up seems interesting cos of it's interest rate, the buyer needs to be mindful and should not extend this loan to a longer period (not more than 3-4years). A thing that has worked for me is, some part of my investments are in FDs and I generally take a loan against it, which is generally 1% higher than the interest paid by the bank. And generally close the loan within 1 or 1.5 years.

Lovely podcast. i have made a few mistakes in the past which I understood after having the experience. Im glad that toay folks have your podcast to understand the whole scenario before making a decision. And coming from the BFSI industry, Ican say that taking a PL on a second deal is far better then going for a vehicle finance. Interest on PL and VL is calculated difffewntly, if the VL is is at 9% if you calculate the amount you twice the rate, were as in a PL you have Interest is paid on a differing Principal balance, the fore closure rate is also less and you do not have the hassle of Hypothcation. again it depends on many factors like your Cibil score, debt to income ratio, and many more things. I also agree that anything over 4 yers (vehical age) can ruin your experience. But great show you guys put out there Kudos to the team.

I agree with you about personal loans being better than vehicle loans, you can also negotiate with banks for lower interest rates and zero foreclosure charges. Pitch 2 or 3 banks against each other especially towards the end of the month to get the best deal for your loans. I feel negotiating for better loan terms is more effective than negotiating with the seller for a slightly lower price. I have used this method to get personal loans with lesser interest rates than vehicle loans and with no foreclosure charges, then take the loan for the maximum tenure possible so the emi is the lowest amount and close the loan within 1 to 1.5 yrs as there is no foreclosure charges, this has worked out very well for my last used bike purchase.

If the odometer reading bothers you, there's another hack where you can reach out to the service centre and ask at what km was the bike/car last serviced. If it was serviced at the authorised service centre.
My friend once tried that and got to know that the bike had ran a lot more kms than the odometer read.

For loans, check if the interest rates offered is at daily reducing balance or flat interest rate. Almost all 2 wheeler loans are given at flat interest rate, while car and home loans are at reducing balance. This creates a big difference in actual interest amount paid, its better if you can get personal loan at daily reducing balance rather than taking 2 wheeler loan

I would suggest cross-checking authenticity of odo reading with not just the pedal, gear knob and steering wear, should check tread of all four wheels + stepney which could be another give away of any odo manipulation.
One another point is not to depend wholely on service history. In case the vehicle underwent a minor accident and the owner decided to sell away the car, he could get it repaired/repainted at an FNG paying from own pocket, thus keeping service history clean.

A very important topic and one of my favorites! I just want to share a lesson that I got. So I was driving a Bolero and wanted to change as the Bolero was not quite family friendly, though the seats were not too uncomfortable. So I have a local used car dealer with whom I share good rapport and I regularly browse through the used cars that he picks up. Now when I approached him for changing the Bolero who provided me with a very sweet deal. He offered me a 2018 Black Scorpio S11 absolutely stock. Also he was giving me 6.5 lakhs for my Bolero which was also from 2018. I looked at the ODO and it was around 5500 KMs on the ODO and as Kartikeya mentioned about checking the Trip Meters I checked that it was normal. No Tampering. The previous owner had to sell the car as he was unable to pay the EMIs (or whatever the reason). So the car was good and nearly as new and the asking price was 14 lakhs. I also had the service records checked from the Authorized Service Center and found that the Mandatory First Service was not even done on the vehicle. So once the car was checked the vehicle condition was sorted.
Also I checked for new Scorpio which was coming for 20+ lakhs and mahindra was giving me 6 lakhs for my Bolero. Even I checked with other brands as well, since I am ready to spend 14 lakhs, I was keeping my options open.
Now came the financial part. Since I was getting 6.5 lakhs for my Bolero I had to loan the rest of the 7.5 lakhs. I had very less to no experience in buying used car using used vehicle loans. Now this dealer person kept on assuring me that the Interest Rates for used cars are nearly at par with New car loans. So I had to rely upon him. The guy who was doing the loan also started to play fishy and was not revealing the EMI amount to me before processing. But my heart was already set on the Black Scorpio (dreaming myself driving the black beast with swag and all that 😎). So I went ahead with the processing. Once the bank processed the loan it came out to 18k per month, which was pretty steep for me. so after paying a couple of EMIs I decided enough. I spoke to a friend of mine working in HDFC Bank about taking a personal loan. And funnily the Interest Rate for Personal Loan came out at 10.5% as opposed to the Used Car Loan which was at 14.5%.
I foreclosed the Used car loan at ICICI by paying a good 42K for foreclosure charge(which I console myself as the charge for my lesson learnt). Had the vehicle hypothecation removed and after shelling out a few more bucks I was able to bring down the EMI amount to 11K which is still very much doable. And yes, I did share a piece of my mind with my dealer for the ignorant attitude.
    Lesson Learnt:
    1. Never buy an Used car with Used Car Loan. Always try to pay the entire amount or the maximum that can be paid and take the rest as Personal Loan.
Benefit: Lower Interest rates, No Hypothecation
    2. If possible, go for the first hand vehicle, because the EMI that you would be paying is any day lesser than Personal Loan EMI or Used Car Loan EMI.
Benefit: Even lower interest rates and being the first owner.
Hope someone going to buy an used car doesn't suffer the burdens that I suffered.

Cars were always new and on loan, new bikes again on loan which were beyond 5 L , pre owned bikes were always cash purchased, I always went with my gut feeling with pre owned bikes where I can’t physically inspect them, happened to be buying three out of state bikes during lockdown when lot of hidden gems popped out for sale 😅, paid cash and waited for them to arrive with heart almost at my mouth but luckily all were the way owners described and they became friends for life.

    A couple of points
    1. I feel sometimes in discussions like these, because Kartikeya wants to talk about cars too, that Shumi defers to that and the conversation becomes a little skewed (probably unintentionally) and some pointers about Bikes get lost. For example, I would have liked to hear a red flags list for bikes too, and while some of it like paperwork is common to both, I'm sure that there would be some red flags specific to bikes
Although it may be possible that few topics just require more conversation on cars than on bikes, and that is what is causing my feeling. (I felt this in the Safety video too, and I can see how that may be because cars just have more things to talk about in terms of safety)
    2. Can we have a discussion on gear and accessories for both cars and bikes? Would love to hear the perspective of these two on both those topics, especially if it can get into the nitty gritty details a little, especially around maneuvering the legality of accessories and modifications like a different set of suspension units.
    3. Are there any models/manufacturers in your experience which consistently show up as good deals on the used market? I remember Shumi mentioning something about Japanese bikes once on a different platform, in this regard
Beautiful conversation as always! Worth the wait

    • @motorinc
      @motorinc  Год назад

      Hey Rishal!
      1. Yes. But in this case, Kinghee does have significant experience with used vehicles... far more than Shumi, so the discussion was expected to (and did) skew that way for sure.
Bike red flags: Any fluid leaks at all (no matter how it's explained). Any sounds that shouldn't be there (unless you can see the loose bolt that's causing an insignificant thing to rattle). We don't mind minor scratches but the bike must ride true and straight (any deviation at all is a flag).
      2. Can do!
      3. On the big bikes, generally, Japanese machines are surer bets because they're either more reliable or because (Kawasaki aside) parts are usually quite a bit cheaper. Outside of this, the market leaders of the segments usually command the deals.

    • @RishalRaj
      @RishalRaj Год назад

@@motorinc 1. Quite possible that his experience with used cars dealership caused the skew here. Just putting it out there, since I do love to hear about both cars and bikes :D
      2. Will be waiting with baited breath, whenever you can do it, since this topic is one that I really look forward to hearing on from these two. Thanks!

    IN SUMMARY :
    6 lakh good deals start - example 2014, 2015, 2016 street triple
find a trusted mechanic and take him with you, even pay him
    used dealer > individual
    opt for lower mileage
be analytical - how are tires worn if mileage is low
opt for newer bikes - max 4-5 year old
    dont pay for accessories
    buy cash down mostly
make sure to ride the bike
make sure you can see the papers clear
avoid if its too good to be true
    chose single owner
service history needs to be clean
know who the owner is, or close enough to vouch
if they are lot of accessories, owner probably rides hard
if the meter has been tampered, both trip meters might be synced to the odometer reading
be willing to walk away if you spot a red flag
    transfer the rc
change all fluids when you buy used
ask the owner to get it serviced
custom exhaust - stay away - dont know if ecu is tuned
buy with your heart pay with your mind

I have always bought mildly used cars and been incredibly happy with it! (skoda fabia -> Honda city 3rd gen -> Octavia TDI 3nd gen). Few tips from my experience -
    1. There are always some very good car models ignored by market for various reasons (like skoda fabia, honda jazz, Skoda Yeti, few fords etc). You might get them at a lot better price in second hard market.
    2. There are some cars that are extremely reliable (like honda's and toyotas). You can consider well maintained older models as they hold up very well. Some cars though dont hold up well with time (would avoid very old german cars)
    3. Few good proxies to milage on the car is service records, if tyres are original, current tyre wear, wear and tear of seats and steering wheel etc. Its rather easy to identify meter tampering if you look for the right things.
    4. It important to check if car has structural damage, one can eyeball the chassis contour lines, its very hard to restore chassis damage completely. Superficial damage to doors, bumpers etc are fine, damaged chassis could compromise safety of the car.

I see a lot of disparity in Price of KTMs that are 3 years old and that of 6-7 years old in the 2nd hand market. I tried to search around and many told me it's because KTMs start giving issues after 5 years. Shumi since you have been a long term owner of a 390, can you let me know if you had faced any major repairs or parts failing?

One dilemma that still runs in my mind (maybe on the boundaries of this podcast) is - I have been riding a Duke 250 for some time now and would like to upgrade to a used Street Twin. The problem is, I would not want to spend all that money without knowing if I will like riding the bike for long rides (2-3hrs min). Short TDs will not give a true picture. I didn't find any place in Mumbai or Bangalore from where I can rent the bike for a couple of days to come to a decision.
Any thoughts on the best way to go about it?

I would like share my experience of my used Jan 2018 Bajaj Pulsar NS200 ABS BS4
I got it in September 2020 with 16800km on the ODO for approx 60% of the new bike price from an unknown OLX seller. I knew it on the first ride itself that it was the one to get, with the level of smoothness it had along with 0 rattles/ noise from the bike. Just got the basic service done which costed me 2.5-3k and felt like riding in a new one.
I still have the NS with me and even after 28k kms it’s running stock chain sprocket and to this day apart from a modified visor which rattles on roughy roads there’s no noise/ issue in the bike.

Great discussion and as you guys said the mechanic who checks the vehicle matters the most when coming to used vehicles be it bikes or cars. Got a used bike and there were so many issues with it and had to sell it within two years to a mechanic who was willing to get it fixed because the first one who checked it didn't check it properly had to change the carb, the front forks went kaput within 6 months since they were weak when i got it seems and when i was about to ditch it, it has some clutch issues as well. The mechanic said since the engine is good and he had the same vehicle which had a dead engine he wants to use the engine in my bike in his at that point i didn't care for that bike as much so yup sold it to him. And a disclaimer to all, in bikes with digital speedometer they can just replace a chip which is soldered to the speedo to change the odo readings i heard it from the guys i sold it to.

More often than less one can find better deals and cleaner vehicles when it comes to super bikes. for most super bike users, the car is still the principal vehicle of commute, but the super bike is an aspirational element, which fills a huge void in his life. it’s much much easier to find super clean hardly run super bike. since a lot of people having the money but no time will end up picking a super bike probably for aspirational value and will hardly have the time to clock any miles on it and at some point will be attracted to the newer machine on the market, these machines bought through the right channel and connections are fantastic deals.

In pure numbers terms, OH, you're spot on. But care and caution needed to identify the odd crashed/bent/dodgy one is just the same

@@motorinc true that. But like you guys correctly mentioned most of us old dawgs have our trusted guys in the dealer system and outside to check for such things beforehand.

Lovely lovely video. Made two purchases last year, an ‘03 R1 and an Octavia VRS Mk1. The bike’s with Anand in Bangalore (Indimotard) and the car’s with another good garage there.
Totally agree to each point made. I just bought them both from the owner that I know personally. Somehow I just don’t trust dealers and I’d suggest everyone to look for cars and bikes in their own circle. Not just that, every thing, from adopting a dog to buying a house. You can never know if the owner was a violent guy to the dog or the house has leaks that’s painted over. Comb through your contacts and their contacts first. At least they won’t sell you a nightmare so that they can get their dreams.

My father bought a 2007 zen estilo in 2018, only 4000 km on odo, very good condition, didn't even have to go to service for 1st two yrs, for only ₹1,30,000. That's what i call a good deal

@@motorinc yeah, still use it in cities sometimes, and i tell you, it is heck of a lot fun to drive than the Venue. Being 18 myself, most of my training is in that car. Only bummer is the lack of power steering. And it has less jerking than the Venue

As I have all my bike pre-owned what I have learnt is always keep 10% of price the bike you are getting aside so that as soon as you get the bike...spend it on that bike do the basic service..check if anything needs to be replaced. And all this costs should come under the 10% of the cash you kept aside if its crossing that then it might not be the best deal.

Loved it !!!! , Need to have information on how to sell, may be anything specific you do, in case your planning to sell a vehicle or you would suggest one should do when selling a vehicle. Because I had bad experience selling vehicles, where people will come ask very low value, or simply test it and wouldn't return the call after that or would say straight away lets put it on fork lift evaluate everything and say your vehicle is in extremely bad shape, will not give you money as much as you are expecting....

Sellers should bring vehicles as close to stock as possible and get them as clean as possible. After that be honest and be patient. Talking down your car is a valid (if annoying) negotiation strategy. This means nothing more and is not a reflection on you. Just tell them that you're done and wait for a more considerate buyer to come along

We don't believe there's a specific time. We don't believe in garages where everything isn't a keeper. You only sell keepers once your emotion fades and using those specific vehicles isn't emotionally as appealing as it used to be.
