Too bad anti-China sentiment is growing in Australia regardless. I doubt any ambassador can fix the deteriorating Australia-China relations.
Amy, despite the strained relationship between Australia and China, it's people like you and your parents that remind me there are always good people in every country. Keep up the good work!
Yes, too bad anti-China sentiment is growing in Australia, even though Australia is located closer to Asia than America and China is Australia's biggest trading partner.

The more I've watched your videos, the more I appreciate your mom's perspective. She's so open minded and never trying to grab the attention of the camera. I trust her opinions and enjoy her affirmative presence!
A nice family affair. I must share this with my Chinese language students. Wonderful eats, amazing pronunciation, and highly educational. Well done. Looking forward to the next one!

Amy 你下次可以先吃分量小的不带汤的菜,吃完前面四道菜最后吃回锅肉可能已经凉了,其实可以最后吃水煮鱼片,因为它上面覆盖了一层油,不容易散热,可以保温很久

I almost cried at the end when your parents kissed you because my family are all in China and I'm in the US and I miss eating with my family. 😭
And I think you are absolutely on point about sichuanese food: spicy is just there to bring out the bold flavors, unlike how sichuanese food’s rep in western countries, which is that spicy is the only thing that comes to mind.
I also recommend watching Li Ziqi’s videos. She shows how sichuanese food is really made and most of them don’t contain chilly peppers at all!
My husband and I have spent every weekend going to all your food recommendations in Sydney! I’m Chinese and I know nothing about all these different cuisines! Thank you for educating us! We are obsessed with your parents too! I love your dads jokes 🤣
Me and my wife did the same. 😄 I am Scottish my wife is Chinese, this spicy joint is one of our favourite restaurants!

So true! I bet a lot of mexicans would love sichuan food
Yeah, Mexican aboriginals are the ancestor of Chili peppers around the world. Thanks to Sichuan cuisine's adoption, now more and more people are able to enjoy Chili peppers. Sichuan and Hunan have been locking in competition who has the best Chili pepper dishes and claimed they have been Chili-spicy for thousands of years, which is completely false. Actually they have never seen or imagined how many heirloom Chili pepper varieties on this side of Pacific coast. :-)
Besides introducing delicious Chinese cuisines, I would definitely love to see you share about the parenting skills that your parents have been practicing. Such a lovely family!

Wow, I just discovered you today and I’m SO Happy. I absolutely love Sichuan food, my favourites are boiled fish (I agree with your dad that it is the yummiest fish I have ever had), maps tofu, cold noodles, and eggplant. I first discovered this cuisine watching Anthony Bourdain. I’m in Melbourne and Bourdain raved about Dainty Sichuan where I have had all of the above but they also have an incredible eggplant dish that is crunchy and toffee-like on the outside and soft in the middle. It’s time I went back to Dainty Sichuan I think! I can’t wait to watch more of your content. Thank you!
I’ve never been so intimidated by Chinese cuisine until I came across Szechuan cuisine. I can never convinced myself to visit any Szechuan restaurants and order myself a full blown Szechuan courses like you guys did here. I have a lot of reservation for this cuisine. The color and the extreme amount of peppercorns used turn me off badly. Anyway just want say that your conviction to explore and introduce Chinese food is worth applauding to. Also your dad and mom are the perfect example of a great parent that encourages their kid to chase their dream and passion. Kudos to you and your parents! Hope to see more great foodblog/content from your channel!
😋😋😋 hope Australia have more family like yours which is open minded, not bias & respect to other cultures. Bravo 👏👏👏 keep up the good work
Amy, we usually say “碰一个”, “喝一个”, or just “来,来,来” and rising your hand with that glass of beer. It is true that we don't usually directly drink with a bottle, and just pour it into a small glass repeatedly.
FYI: "祝酒" is a written and very formal word with the meaning of "giving a toast"
your dad is so funny! Comedy genius! I love him.
I feel even the way you wrap the doubanjiang with the plastic bag is in a Chinese way, haha
Saying 干杯 and having a sip is totally is fine. You can even replace the beer with juice and still say 干杯.
for me, 夫妻肺片 is the most delicious cold food.

Your parents are such troopers! They’re willing to try so many different Chinese cuisine with you. Can’t wait to see more videos ! ☺️😊

For one been drinking for many years I just want to clarify “干杯”means bottoms up and “随意" is more close to cheers.

麻婆 in Sichuan dialect means " pockmarked man's wife". There is a pockmarked man, nickname as 王麻子,who has a beautiful wife, people call her 麻婆,which is short way stands for "wife of pockmarked Wang", she knows a special way to cook the tofu, that's how the dish name come from.

One thing about Chinese drinking etiquette. If you want to show respect then you lower your glass when tipping it off the next person's glass. So if you cheers with your boss, your glass should be lower than your boss's.

Been to that restaurant :) delicious food! My Chinese friends took me there last year. 一定要再次去
This family style format is really working on me, great video!
Really happy to hear that!
These parents are So Game; such good sports! Clearly not as adventurous as Amy (I certainly wouldn’t be either, although I deeply appreciate her willingness to try!), but their love and appreciation for their worldly offspring is very much on display here. Well done everyone! Every good thing about family and appreciation for new cultures is on display here.
Growing up in China, I was always told that when I’m ganbei-ing someone superior to me in age or work, I should make sure to put my cup lower than his or hers as a sign of respect. I don’t know if that’s just Beijing or it’s the same elsewhere in China.
Applicable to the whole of China
Sometimes people jokingly dodging the clang, move their glass lower than the other and try to clang when they are lower, end up lowering the glass to the floor.
Also in Japan

That's a very well composed top5 list of Sichuan food! You guys just got me drooling over my laptop in the middle of the night lol. I urgently need some shui-zhu-yu now! The way Amy broke down each dish's taste and the reaction from your parents gave me some good ideas about what and how to introduce Sichuan dishes to my foreign friends. Awesome video!
in northern China what we usually say is "走一个" 😂😂
This video is just a grownup version of Amy’s “take your parents to school science fair day”. She talks about Culture, History, Gastronomy, common misconception of certain subject matters, experimenting newly found elements on the periodic table. And she even brought her work she did from home. And just like in her school days she always wants everyone to give her work a thumbs up.
Your family is so great, I like your Dad and Mom very much.
Cannot wait for the Hunan food episode. Your dad's reaction is so funny 😂 I am from Jiangxi province, which is also known for very spicy food. But there are few Jiangxi restaurants overseas though...

Sichuan cold noodles is super dainty!!!!!!!!!
blondie: let me clarify, saying 乾杯 doesn't require you skull it, hope that clears it up
me, an american: what's it mean to skull something, i thought that was a noun
pretty sure it's the word skål, which is said in Swedish/Danish/Norwegian when toasting
As a semi-Sichuanese and meat-lover, highly highly recommend 酥肉!You can eat it dry with spiced salt or slightly cook it in hotpot soup! Trust me it's AWESOME
Mapo tofu 😋 . We just tried this earlier this year. It has become one of our fav dish.

Thanks for sharing that!!
We do but rare, also some people say 走一个,which is quite casual.
Sichuan dish is best when eating them together with rice! Usually people would order 1 or 2 of those 5 classic dishes on your table and that's enough for a wonderful meal ~
The background music played by Erhu is called "牧羊曲".
the bgm is good
Your mum really sold this video! I love your parents reactions; seems like you can get any Chinese food imaginable in Sydney
Also for the "water boiled fish", you can choose to have more than one meat in it without paying extra, I usually pick fish and beef (水煮两样), you get to taste two different kinds of meat which is even better in my opinion.
when drinking and people say "我干了. 你随意”,just remember they don't expect you to "随意”.....
Spicy Joint is probably the best Szechuan style restaurant in Sydney. There are no other places that have the consistency and quality of this restaurant.
Especially the one Amy went in Chinatown

I don't think 江西菜 even made it to Australia because it's too hot and spicy 🤣
Greetings from a Sichuan girl. Love you and your parents. You guys are just lovely.
Love your food adventures with your parents. They are better Asians than me with their spice tolerance; mine is non-existent 🤣 Can’t wait for the next food adventure video.
Amy, Amazing series! Your parents are natural stars of the show! My wife and I tune in every week for your Chinese Food adventures!
Tbh the restaurant Amy shot the video in, Spicy Joint, is a very non-spicy-food-costumer-friendly restaurant and would recommend to anyone who wants to try Sichuan food but is afraid of spices
suggestion: In our region, Hui Guo Rou better be diy at home 'cause like other dishes, Chuan Cuisine is better prepared at home. Every household supposedly has its version. Of course , that's when you have 豆瓣 at hand at your disposal.
Dave loves spicy Sichuan foods and so do I but my tummy doesn’t like it. The ring of fire made me cringe but I find taking some Gaviscon, Maalox or any antacid tables before and after really helps to eliminate those issues and allow me to enjoy spicy foods again.

Amy is currently in Australia. These videos are all from Australia.
When I lived in China years ago. I learned that if someone is taking you out for dinner or someone of significance it is a sign of respect to have your glass lower than there's when you are toasting (clinking glasses).
Looks great. Your dad is very brave. I was born in Beijing but immigrated to Australia with my parents when I was 4. I have never gotten used to eating offal and I can’t use chopsticks to save my life. It embarrasses my parents that I sometimes need to ask for a fork in Asian restaurants. Love watching your videos Amy. It really makes me feel closer to my roots. I hope that one day I’ll be able to travel throughout China like you have been able to do.
麻婆 is a nickname. 婆 means woman who is old and 麻 is her feature. It should be called by friends or neighbors or even strangers. It’s not describe someone’s grandma. Although 婆 could means grandma(外婆)or mother in law(婆婆).Different meanings in different conditions. Appreciate for your interesting video about Chinese food. Love it.
HAHAHA Amy, I find out that your Chinese pronunciation regressed a little bit...
I am Chinese living in the UK currently and when I am eating out at a Chinese I usually ordered the exact same dishes as Amy! Fuiqi feipian (my fav out of the bunch because it's really good if you're eating it with rice!) , shui zhu yu (the boiled fish dish), mapo tofu and sometimes laziji (mala chicken). Guys, give them a try at your nearest Chinese restaurant!
Water boil fish is my favorite
In Cantonese the " Spouse Lungs slices" sounds like "spouses USELESS slices" lol....

Hey Amy, not sure whether you have heard of 蜀香坊 - now called LAN Dining after renovation, it’s just opposite world square on level2 of 2 Cunningham street. Definitely give that a try if you haven’t already they have some of the most authentic Chengdu dishes that you could get in Sydney. Spicy joint is actually owned and operated by Shanghainese, whilst LAN is by authentic Sichuan owner.
