@@rinipork It's going to cost a ton of money IF it can even be done. There's also a ton of rot, due to water damage. It might have to be take down to the studs.
Please consider asking universities and architecture museums if they would like to acquire his papers, especially any that he taught or presented at! That way, the institution will archive all of the papers and architectural renderings. This is a rare collection of intact midcentury history. You'd be contributing to scholarship on the architecture, aesthetics, and values of the era.
Don't know who you are, never watched a single video, but if you restore this absolute gem of a Mid-Century Modern home, I will absolutely be here for every episode.
Also an architect here and I just subscribed for this house alone. Please do it justice, love that you love the original elements! Step 1 fix the roof, step 2 mold remediation and framing replacement, step 3, have fun with the finishes and archiving all the treasures and letters inside!
Agreed. Congratulations on this find! This is an actual fantasy of mine (finding an architectural home that just needs TLC), so I’m definitely interested. I am amazed at how much of the original, unique, or high value parts of the house are still in tact. I would be tempted to keep as much as possible and donate all papers to the appropriate archives. Looks like you have enough there that you can sell which can help pay for the renovation!
I don't know how I ended up here but this house is a dream come true to me. Please, please keep as much of it original as you can. It's a gem and it's only original once! I'd defo frame the old architects drawings too, that would be a nice nod to the history and previous owners. Amazing! Good luck!
T@@xMrsmileyfacex That's a joke I could tell although I love architecture (as my father is an architect). Doesn't tell much whether she appreciates the architecture and history. I think the rest of her comments praising it and the old pictures of the house prove otherwise.
100% Agree. This house is a gem. All the wood paneling and original features are AMAZING. I don't know if she's being sarcastic when she says she likes the things, but they are truly wonderful. If nothing else, restore as much as possible and then sell it for profit. I don't think anybody wants to buy a house like this with new interiors. I would cry if I entered this house and found everything white and dead.
When she said she didn't know how she was going to get that old dresser and mirror out of the master bedroom I actually said "don't" out loud. So much gorgeous furniture in this home.
What I love most about Jenna being the one to renovate this house is that I know she will not only respect the original vibe of it but also add to it in her own special way!! I just know it will come out so beautiful and unique ❤
An architect here, you have no idea how much I wanted to be there just to see it in real life. It’s BEAUTIFUL. So excited to watch the renovation journey 🙏🏻
Subscribing just to see the restoration. Please, please, please keep the original floor plan, style, decor, furniture, etc. as it was originally as much as possible. Anything that you don’t want either give to a museum or sell for someone else to enjoy. The money can help you with the cost of the renovations. I hate that all the 40s -70s architecture is all being demolished. Great find in this gem. Can’t wait to see you restore it.
I just subscribed for the same reasons. The way light filters in with the mid-century homes is magical. There is privacy where it is needed and open expansive windows to visually bring the outdoors in.
First time commenting ….. girl we would totally watch the renovations. I’m in my late 50’s and I love watching your channel because of your creative talent. You have just acquired a time capsule of a time when so much detail and quality materials were used to make homes. That home is loaded with furniture, with restoration is worth a lot of money. The stories you could share about the owner through the letters and the things you find would absolutely be interesting and would be a treasured gift to anyone in his family. And the fact that he was an architect is even more cool. Also, I am assuming it is your boyfriend behind the camera - his humor is golden… I enjoyed his comments and watching you interact with him. There is no question about the daunting task you have ahead of you…. Water damage is the most difficult to deal with when restoring a home. I also think it’s cool that you want to restore a lot of the home to its original beauty while also doing what is needed to modernize it as well. And speaking from years of experience and suffering serious health issues I want to share ... take the mold seriously… wear a mask …. the amount of mold in the house right now can cause serious health issues. And whatever you choose to keep you will want to treat for mold spores even if there isn’t any visible mold. You’re more than welcome to message me for more information and there is a wealth of information on what can be done to remediate mold. Some might tell you to just throw everything out however there has been some advances in science that show you can remediate items.. it’s not cheap but doable for the things worth saving. I am beyond excited to see you and I think your boyfriend is going to help (don’t want to assume :).. anyways …… I would love to watch a treasured mid-century modern home restored with all the quirkiness and talent you have to offer … and based on your boyfriends comments he sounds like he’s cut from the same cloth as you so that would be an added bonus.
Anton here from Denmark. I work for a demolition Company. Be very carefull with pipes with old isolation, tile grout, old plates, roof slate, Eternit plates and old wall paint. All this, Can contain asbest, PCB sinc, and lead. Take a lot of test, befor work start. Remember to use mask with P3 filter. Houses from 1950 is the year where there was used most asbest produkt in buildings. There Can be dangerous fibers in the House from asbest. Best of luck. Much love from Denmark ☺️
This is in Canada. She couldn’t remodel this house without all the permits that will MAKE SURE she doesn’t do a single thing wrong. Just to ask the inspector to breath in her new home will cost her $500 CAD in a permit. To walk on her floors or to pull them all up? That’s another $500 cad permit. This is Canada- big brother is always watching with huge fines over your head if you decide to do a little thing without permission. The Canadian government doesn’t trust our own will to live so they babysit us at every step and charge us a premium to do it because think we are all stupid. In Canada, not only is big brother always watching and stalking us- but they charge us a per diem to do it!
whoaa a channel that isn't obsessed with stripping old houses of what makes them unique and beautiful. feels too good to be true, that stone wall is gorgeous and all the clean lines and natural light amazinggg
So excited for you! I agree. Fix the roof first so you stop the leaks. Then have a mold abatement team come in and remove all that black mold and treat any of the remaining so your health doesn't suffer. Then you can start to think about living there. Black mold is hugely toxic and can kill you among many other horrible ways it can affect your health. I see A LOT of potential in this house and I'm really excited to watch what you do with it!
Oh for sure! Mold, lead, asbestos. So dangerous! I did a remodel last year and popcorn ceiling had asbestos. Expensive to have it removed but luckily no one was living there at the time. Gonna be a whole lotta work! But gorgeous house lol
That glass bottle in the rec room is potentially worth a little bit of money, if you haven’t tossed it already, you should look it up. It’s a particular type of glass from the 70’s and there are those of us that are collecting them again because it’s a part of our childhood.
OMG YOU HAVE GOLD!! Please keep all those lamps, chairs, couches, dressers. Those are GOLD!!! Please keep the paneling. Take out, fix the mold and all that then put it back. It’s a dream. congrats. 🎉
Unfortunately - keeping any items will always have mold in them. Mold toxicity is no joke people! She should also not be breathing this all in! Get a mold remediation team to test what is in there!
@@rachellyman A lot of people do not realize a lot of things need to be thrown out. Even if you can't see it - it's there. Selling moldy items for money is unethical. This housei s full of mold - that is why she got a deal! Mold toxicity can be debilitating. To walk around without a mask/touching everything and thinking you can save some of these pieces is being uneducated. Checking for mold/or for these houses - the extent before purchasing is a big mistake. Even if buying - recognize how much will have to be abated and most things are garbage bc of the infection. It's in the air and sitting/absorbed on all items in the house.
Yea once something has mold there isn't really a way to remedy it. Majority of the time it will come back bc it has crazy perseverance. Think of it like a big loaf of bread yea you can throw away the slice with the mold on it but it's all gonna become mold very quickly after. Some surfaces could be cleaned to remove the spores. But last thing you would wanna do is keep that couch if it has mold in or on it and then in a few years max your health turns to hell until one day you finally notice something off with it or the fabric rips to reveal a nest of mold. My uncle and his family just moved out of their home as one wall was slowly leaking and developed mold. They had chronic respiratory infections for years like 6-8 times a year, they only found out cause part of the paint chipped away at a soft spot and all you could see was the mold behind it. You could try to reupholster and repad it, but it's usually expensive to pay someone to do it. And possibly with enough chemicals any wood may be able to be saved. Sadly its kinda about priority at this point since the house is in such bad shape the furniture is kinda on the back burner and there's gonna be a lot of costs for the house so do you really wanna spend it on the the furniture to save it? She could try to sell it but it's gonna be hard and she's gonna need to be clear that this isn't a useable piece at this point. I just hope they take the mold very seriously bc if they leave even one moldy piece of anything in there all the reno work will become contaminated and this house will fall to even worse disrepair.
with jenna's style and color choices, i genuinely think the midcentury-ness will shine through completely, however it is transformed will be SPECTACULAR
I’m an interior designer and daughter of an architect. I subscribed for the house ❤ It is BEAUTIFUL! Please just restore and don’t get rid of anything. You are really lucky, and please don’t feel overwhelmed, try to enjoy this renovation as much as you can. It will be amazing when you are done. I’m in love with this house!! 💎
@@robhersey1796My late Italian grandfather (an “old school” home builder from the 1930’s to ‘60s) used to tell a story about inexperienced (I’m being kind here) “craftsmen”. He said you could always pick them out at a job site because while they had enormous self-confidence in their abilities, they always wondered around with the expression of a donkey looking at a wristwatch.
The green bottle you held up in the basement and called a Christmas tree is a MCM Empoli "genie bottle" decanter!! Worth like $200. Look them up they look so so great in different colors on a bar cabinet in a cluster, or anywhere as decor. I have three haha. Also this house is the coolest I've ever seen a youtuber buy, such amazing character (and the furniture!). So glad to see that you appreciate the original details like the colorful bathrooms and wood panels etc. I see so many people gut incredible retro homes and it breaks my heart. P.S. I think the reason the wall in the living room is a half wall is to let in natural light between rooms since there are all those great windows? Anyways I'm so excited to watch you bring it back to life :')
It is cool - and also prepare your heart because she is going to have to gut the hell out of this to remediate the mold and rot, if it is even possible to save.
The nightstand lamp in the master has a twin in the living room. Keep all the furniture and lamps, especially the living room and master bedroom stuff. You’ll be glad you did.
that living room and included furniture is GORGEOUS! My jaw dropped when I saw it. and the POOL! and the colorful bathrooms are so you...I think you're the perfect person to restore this home 😊
As an architect, I can assure you, you found a treasure! If I came across a house like this I would do everything in my power to buy it. Congratulations!
Ariel Basset kinda became a renovation channel when she bought her old house a few years ago! I'm sure people will watch yours and be excited to follow along. Congrats and good luck!
Electrician here. That dial above the master bed and in the living room is an old low voltage system to turn lights off in different parts of the house from one location. Was all the rage as you would say “10000 years ago”
@ScottShedd Oh, dear. I must be a cave woman. LOL I'm about as old as the house. The house is truly gorgeous! I remember going to a friend's house. The house was in a similar style, but the caroet was purplecand the bathrooms were teal and pink. Itcwas the '60s at the time. I'm building my own tiny house to have on my land. At the reclaimed building materials store, I bought a baby blue sink for $20. It's one purchase I'm really excited about.
Small time Antiques dealer here... that green glass big "Christmas Tree" with the finial... it is not a "swung vase" that is extremely popular right now, but it is a popular form of vase and is worth a few hundred dollars! Please be careful especially with the finial... My grandmother had three by her MCM fireplace... much of your decor/furniture is also valuabe, especially those dressers. Before you throw anything away, and I do mean anything, be sure to use Google lense it at least. I would be happy to help identify stuff too. That stove, and those colored bathroom sink, bathtub, toilet can sometimes be worth some money. That drafting equipment equipment can be as well.
10:00 just a note that is not a Christmas tree. It is a decanter, and those are highly sought after among MCM enthusiasts😊 and collectors, highly recommend keeping it, and or selling it.
The nail in the oven forshaddowing the nail in the pipe later on ❤️ binge watched this whole series while recovering from surgery. Loooove how much you are showing about the process. You guys got this 💪
As a mid century enthusiast I am begging you to restore this to its original condition as much as possible. There are so many unique and beautiful pieces to this house that I am praying you down take out… this is house is such a gem and I would hate to see someone over modernize it…
Check out Retro Renovation website (archived; no longer active) is an excellent resource for reproduction mid-century furnishings, fixtures and building materials.
I'm all for a house renovation project but this is way beyond DIY. Some things you'll want to do ASAP - have the roof replaced, check how structurally sound things are as there appears to be a lot of rot especially in the ceilings. I was worried about you walking around in there. Check for mold and see what remediation needs to be done. Get dumpsters to empty the place out, once you're sure that it's safe to be in there. I think down the road it could be a gorgeous home but it will need tons of work and money. Depending on the mold and structural damage it may need to go down to the studs. There definitely are some treasure in there, those old letters were so cool!
Yeah I've done a few home renovations and was thinking this as I watched. This house needs a TON of work. If she doesn't want to spend the next ten years renovating it herself, she's gonna need to hire some crews to come in, which gets super expensive super quick
jepp I thought the same...its a time capsule looks like a furniture advert from 1962 - Mad Men style at its best....I would preserve as much as possbile, throwing away all the rotten ceiling insulatoon and give it a super pro cleaning
Although the economy sucks right now, and becoming a houseowner is difficult.. I must say I enjoy that generations now are putting time into fixing up the abandoned old houses and giving them life back.
I would like to know how someone can sell this property if it has been abandoned. Was it left to a family member? Is it on somebodies private land so they can sell it? How long has it been abandoned for--- 5/10/20 years or more? There are so many unanswered questions. I get frustrated not knowing these things. I wish these two youngsters all the very best of luck in their endeavours with this rare building and contents. I am sure a lot of the findings will be valuable and it seems easy to sell stuff online these days. GOOD LUCK!
@@deborahhenderson149i know that sometimes if someones will is contested the estate will just sit there until the courtcase finishes which can take years. That was probably the situation here. And once the case finally ended the house was in such bad shape that they decided to just sell it.
@@windowsill9724 - This has been sitting more than "years", it's been sitting for a over a decade, would be my guess. The man may have had no relatives and/or he died intestate, or he may have left it to a charity and they didn't know what to do with it or couldn't afford to maintain it, or, like you said, relatives contested a will if he did have one, etc. There are many and varied reasons a home will sit abandoned. The courts move like glaciers and people set up roadblocks when they don't get the results they expect. Witness - Trump - delay, delay, delay.
People will definitely watch and people will applaud every original element that can be saved. Mid-Century Modern is a vibe. It's a whole thing. This house was gorgeous in its day. So sad it wasn't kept up. Those bathrooms - wow. I know it will cost a fortune to do all the work but can you imagine how beautiful! And it would be amazing to find a way to preserve the documents and construct the story of the previous owners. Good luck!
Fellow BCer here. Huge fan of your channel. So excited for you and I will so be here for the renos!! I'm sure you're already on it but for safety I'm hoping you will have the house checked for asbestos (especially the tiles) and black mold. Also getting the eletrical checked before turning on appliances or plugging anything in. Only thinking of your safety (and of course your partner and fur babies' safety). This is so exciting!!
It’s a bit sad to see the house in that state, but you can definitely see what it used the look like in the past. And of course, what it might look like once again. And I’ll definitely watch that journey!
I have NEVER watched you before so I think I can speak it that you will have a new following based on this reno alone. Take tips. Work slow. You do not need to do it for any of us but we will LOVE to see the journey!! So many rare things there that really should be in museums or sold at MCM auction
I don’t know if laws and regulations in Canada are different, but here in the U.S. you need to watch out for asbestos & lead paint, especially in older homes. That’s being said, I’d get the insulation hanging from the ceiling tested to make sure there’s no asbestos in it before you guys start restoring the home. I’d also get the house tested for mold & mildew. I just bought a 100 year old home in the U.S. & our house has asbestos & lead paint. We had a black mold problem too lol. Happy renovating!! You found A gem of a home. ❤
It's important to get mould tested before starting the remediation process to know what types of mould you're dealing with and to know the full extent of it, and for when you retest after remediation.
We got a 100Yr old house. Lots of lead paint, but the fluffy stuff in the attic turned out to not be asbestos. Yay. First job was a new roof to keep the water out.
Love the positivity when you walked through the house and the items you wanted to save. The original owner of the house clearly put a lot of love and thought into this beautiful house back in the day and I'm glad it's in good hands! Going to be following you on your restoration journey!
Great find! Those books from the 1800s could be lithographs. I worked for a gallery where the owner bought books like that, cut the pages out and we framed them with museum quality framing and sold for $100s. Tall green bottle could be Empoli glass, not too terribly valuble but highly collectible. How exciting, you have so much workshop space! I think the furniture is valuable, would be worth it to apolster if it nots able to be cleaned.
YES!!! to everything that has already been said!!! YOu have some amazing treasures in there - the letters, those 1862 books, ALL the furnishing and tile....OMG!!! what you don't keep, donate or sell - Mid Century Modern is going off the charts in sales right now, pass what you don't want on to others to enjoy. LOVE your vibe girl and Sir Nick is a treasure!!
roof first! use air filters and activated charcoal to help with air quality and odors. Buy one of those uv lights to kill mold. also use kilz mold primer. comes in exterior and interior. trust me that primer is worth it, especially if you can't get the final paint done, it will protect any repair and drywall you do. Good luck! that house will be beautiful!
There's a lot of black mold probably trapped in the walls and in the ceiling. You want to remove it completely before you decide to paint over it. Otherwise the ramifications to your health will be detrimental.
@@ginapeterson5338 yes! But as they fix the walls, they should use the primer. Still a lot of moisture in the house. I don't know if I would stay in it until all if that was gone.
Watching this after seeing the whole reno thus far is so funny. The peanuts, the comments about there not being any rats. Little did they know what was to come.
There’s a lot of stuff you can sell. The piano, the pool table etc. there are companies that specialise in moving furniture like this, at the buyers expense of course. Also, it would be amazing to keep the aesthetic while updating and renovating.
Make sure you wear a bio suit and a respirator during any clean up or when visiting the house while contractors are working. Black mold can take TENs of years off your life expectancy! Be thorough with the cleans 🧼
Black mold can kill! Or make your life miserable because you’re so sick. That place is full of mold. To PROPERLY remediate, it will cost more than what she paid for it. Sadly, many landlords and flippers do a quick fix and just paint over mold, condemning future unknowing occupants to undeserved illness
@@nicolaxoxo1 Miserable indeed. Originally, I had no clue that black mold was so dangerous. About 7 years ago, I discovered it in the house I had recently moved into. There had obviously been a water leak, previously. I ignorantly just started tearing it all out, and became very ill within the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, I have not been able to heal from it. Pretty rough these days.
So sorry to hear that. I could not believe this woman was walking around without protection. I cannot watch!!! All the best to your and hope that you heal.@@dmurphy5689
@@dmurphy5689 you may have already tried this, but activated charcoal on an empty stomach is how I got rid of my mould toxicity. The porous charcoal "captures" the mould sitting in the gut.
Going back to watch from the beginning after it was taken down to the foundation. Watching jenna talk about how to get the pool table out cracks me up. Just take the walls out! Lol
Wait a minute, is everyone going to skip past the fact that they said "WE bought the house" and "WE are gonna live here"? I'm so happy for you getting a new house, and I'm even happier that things are going so well with Nick-ee-pie ❤ can't wait to watch the journey!
@@skylarberry3754 she did say that, definitely! BUT, she said that in the middle of the video, and they said more "we" stuff at the end of the video, alluding to more "we" things to come. I could be reading WAY too much into this, but I'm happy for her no matter what 🙂
At the beginning of the video Jenna said that SHE bought the house and then she also mentioned her bedroom choice, which someone pointed out already. I was even surprised when her bf mentioned that THEY could move in right away, I thought it was not too nice of him to be so direct 😂 but apparently the wording was for the content purposes only.
Keep the piano! Omg its stunning. Definitely fix the roof first thats probably going to be the most expensive, but will keep the house water tight. The house is stunning and so much potential. Looking forward to seeing you transform it. This is so exciting! And we are all so excited for you!💖
I don’t think you understand how invested I am in seeing this house get renovated. I found your channel from Instagram and I get excited seeing every little update!
You have a treasure! Speaking from the perspective of someone who's owned and restored 4 MCM homes, I hope you are able to keep as much original as possible. The tiles and fixtures in the bathrooms are so cool! Once you get a new roof and mold remediation, the house can really come back to its full glory with caring owners like you. Enjoy and I'll look forward to watching.
I don't think she has enough sense. She should let the local historical society categorize all of the letters and the books of this person. She has no respect of history.
@@lindamcconnell9441That’s a rude assumption- she must have some appreciation to have even noticed & mentioned a lot of the historical elements. I feel like people with no appreciation would just breeze past, dump it all & tear everything out 🤷🏻♀️
Crochet, Knitting, Sewing and now Mid Century Mod renovating…Oh My! 🤩 Congratulations on the new home, can’t wait to see your creativity shine through it.
3:17 this make so much more sense watching your RUclips channel vs watching your instagram shorts, I’ve been following on instagram for quite a long time, and this house has a LOT of potential, don’t give up I support your journey. Most of all have fun with this.
I would watch the $#!+ outta a renovation. Even if it's just like updates in-between fiber arts. Also, I hope you keep everything you can!!! Like EVERYTHING you can! Letters, moments, fixtures, stone, the kitchen divider *chefs kiss* I'm here for all the Jenna content. Proud of you and how far you've come and evolved. Horray for your new long-term journey!
Definitely the Roof. Then the MOLD!! you can get very sick living there with the mold. Alot of the items we see in the video are have HUG vintage resale value!!
Wow! I just discovered your channel and am invested in watching you restore this stunning piece of history. This house is a GEM full of amazing architecture and stunningly cool mid-century furniture. Please don’t throw the architects papers, drawings, work away. Once you’re done with the restoration it will be an awesome magazine worthy feature. Stunning find. I’m so here for it!
Look into those books you found - specifically the 'Masterpieces of Industrial Art and Sculpture at the International Exhibition' found at 12:21 - I'm seeing it sold for over $3,000 USD!
Yes, and don't touch them with your bare hands because your skin oils will damage them. They're very delicate being that old, and need to be protected from moisture and dirt
This is the kind of house once owned by a learned person and they clearly had taste and money, I would want to get absolutely EVERYTHING evaluated, from the art on the walls to the books on the shelves to the random pieces of furniture. People throw out all kinds of gems from homes like this thinking it's just old junk and they have no idea the glass vase they threw out was created by a famous artist the former owner knew, probably worth thousands.
@@LittleDizzyGirl Now most preservationists and archivists recommend not wearing gloves because you're more likely to damage books with gloves (catch delicate paper, grab/pull harder than intended) compared to using your bare hands.
2:28 this is usually done to allow for even light to fill both spaces from the clerestory while keeping the space functionally separated. Architect from the PNW here. This house is BEAUTIFUL! I’m rooting for you on this remodel. I hope you’re able to honor the original design but also, definitely make it your own! Subscribed. 🙌🏻
As someone who’s lived in very old houses all her life, a few suggestions: 1. Test for led paint and asbestos before demoing anything. 2. You will need many dumpsters 3. Coveralls and respirators will be your best friends lol. Good luck!! The house looks very much like your style.
Good luck! I bought my grandparents house in Langley thirty years ago and between holding a full time job, raising a family and doing yard maintenance, I still haven't even come close to finishing it yet. But......... I didn't have RUclips to support me. Number 1 rule: save the roof, you'll save the house.
This brings back the feels for me. I bought a run down 1873 Victorian house when I was 25 and renovated it for 13 years. I even had a pool table like you! I couldn’t figure out how to get rid of it and ended up offering it to some workmen who worked on my foundation. They were thrilled to have it and I was thrilled to have it gone! Best of luck with the renovation! It’s the best and worst experience you’ll ever have simultaneously.
So exciting! Make sure you find someone who knows about mold to help you. I'm saying this from experience as someone who got really really sick from mold we didn't realize we had in our house. A large percentage of people have mold sensitivity. Hopefully you can avoid the complications we have experienced. I love old houses! Sharing in your joy!
Yes I would watch. Keep as much of the old as possible "restore and reuse", keep all bathrooms as is, keep kitchen 'footprint ' but get newer appliances. The important thing now is to get the house dry and keep the elements out and get rid of any mold. A lot of the items left behind you could make many shows on looking through all these boxes and books. With what's left behind, you probably have quite a few items that would be worth keeping or selling. A good way to finance the repairs. I would be interested in seeing whats in each room in more detail!!
Keep the wall oven & get it checked out/ tuned for exact temperature & there are many "restoration companies in California that specialize in preservation of old ovens/stoves & make them very valuable restored.
I would also KEEP the working appliances in the kitchen, (and elsewhere), especially as they came on, as you will never find that high quality in any appliance now, unless you can afford VERY expensive ones!
👍👌👏 In former times I might have fallen in love with this house too because it once was a kind of unique quality home. But meanwhile I learned: As soon as you smell or even see mold, better run away and don't regret it! Mold is much more dangerous/unhealthy, especially for your respiratory tract system, than most people know/think. Best regards, luck and especially health to both of you.
You are an old soul😊 I love that you appreciate the house even though it’s in rough shape. I don’t know much about architecture, but I’d be willing to bet that the house was custom built. You have a treasure! Enjoy!
This house is a DREAM. The stone wall?? INSANE. I hope you are able to get all the funding you need for the restoration. You have a big and expensive journey ahead of you
As someone that bought a mid century modern house that needed help a few years ago, im both envious and anxious for you. Something about those MCM houses, even when you feel like burning the place down from frustration, it keeps you coming back for more. Good luck, that house is incredible and has so much potential!
Omg plzzzz make a renovation series on your channel. I love the mid century architecture, it’s an incredibly beautiful house with so much potential. it needs a lot of work but you can do it! The work will pay off and you’ll feel so accomplished in your stunning home once it’s finished
to answer the last question: YES!! I’m subscribing right now just to make sure I don’t miss any house renovations!! I totally agree with the good bones You just need patience a vision and love to make this sooooo BEAUTIFUL IM HERE FOR IT Also for the letters, maybe scan them in and sort them as a type of archival of the houses past? That would be so cool and lovely
Ugh love watching home restoration where the people can appreciate the uniqueness of old homes!! And watching you guys fawn over the old letters/books/trinkets is so cute. Glad this house is in good hands🫶
Jenna. i am so glad u arent ripping out old cool vintage tubs ,tiles and toilets...i love when a house is dated and a person keeps the era as it is. cool thing to do. love your house u bought! i would watch this with great interest. we purchased a 100 yr old house years ago. fixed it up. resold it in 4 days with no inspection and cash. now we live in an old house that will be 100 years old in 2028...if we live that long cause we are old. cool. video!
Jenna, that house is a diamond. There's pieces in there that can help you pay for the replacement of the ceiling and fixing the whole house. Just like happened to Justin in LoneFox channel, he got like 100k out of a marketplace chair in auction.. Even the love letters, there is potential in there. Checking for asbestos and other things is clearly first step, but i would 100% watch renovations, and as a Mid Century fan i would love to see how the little details of the house that are worth keeping stay in a very cool Jenna way! Keep up girl!
exactly my thoughts, alot of art also. I saw a few key pieces - don't assume that ugly is worthless. MCM very collectable as you probably know. Books also. Donate letters etc. have a local archivist come and check out stuff.
Oh I am EXCITED. For 1, I love watching urban exploration videos in houses that look just like this, 2 the interior design is perfection, 3 renovation vids with creators I know and like are my FAV!!!! Please keep and frame some of the old owners architecture art pieces, I think that would be such an amazing way to memorialize him and also a unique cool art piece to have! Just keep as much as you can, it adds so much character!
Omg I LOVE this house of treasures! it is going to be beautiful after you’re done. I truly hope you stay true to its heritage and restore as much of its original features and furniture. I’m so invested in this Reno project. Please post more Reno videos.
I bought a house in a similar condition to this house, around a year of work stripping everything down to the framework and then waterproofing and fixing a lot of the joists and rafters and then building it back up I now have a great house that I take pride in because I built it to what it is now. Keep a positive attitude during this project and you’ll make something beautiful! Good luck and stay safe!
In the rec room: The white fur rug covering something against the wall. If that is a legit Flokoti sheep rug, you're looking at a value of around 3 to 5 grand. And it looks to be in really good condition. I paid several hundred recently for a modern very poorly made one from one of the discount places online recently and was soooo disappointed. So if the one you have is actual 70s quality, imported from Greece? Definitely get it appraised and cleaned before tossing it if you don't want it.
Except these items are in a moldy house. Don't sell moldy items - getting everyone sick! Even if you can't see it - it's there. She will learn this lesson when she gets mold professionals on how most of this stuff should be thrown out. This is the reason this house was sold as is.
@@brontohen It's sad to see so many people not understand about mold/mold toxicity - and how sick people can get. Getting a mold inspector prior to buying is also important. Obviously this place is completely a mold saturated home - but getting the information and being mindful of what to do is important. Walking around with no protective clothing/mask + people saying she can sell some of this stuff - it's completely crazy! Getting sick from mold can put people out for years - and you can only get out of it if they have resources to do so. As beautiful as some of these details are - do you want to be sick or do you want to keep them? Do you want content or do want to be sick? Lots of money is going to go into abatement and rebuild due to the mold if it's done properly - and professionals will be needed. It's sad bc of the details - but health is health. I hope you get better - I know people who have gotten it and it's debilitating and expensive!
Not sure if anybody else pointed it out, but the dresser in the master bedroom 6:15 is possibly one of the furniture pictured in the dinning room area designs 3:20 . Super cool!
I hope you take your time going through the stuff instead of just hiring a dumpster and trashing all of it--which unfortunately most people do because of the time it takes to actually sort. I would watch a whole series just on what you find and how you either keep, redo or sell stuff in the house.
YESSSSSSS! Finally! I always see beautiful abandoned houses in Canada that are going to be demolished instead of renovated and it makes me so sad. I am SO here for this! Thank you 🙏
I just subscribed. This house is a mid-century gem. I can't get over that they left behind the original furniture and the architects work! That's treasure right there. I've been reading the comments and it's all sound advice. Fix the roof first and right now before it damages anything else. Rent a container and put all of that furniture and architects things in it for safe keeping, then get to tearing all the bad things out and cleaning it up. That alone will help you figure out what needs to be done. Amazing find. Can't wait to see what you do.
So happy for you!!! I agree with some others,do not take mold lightly. I lived in a moldy house and it stole ten years of my life, from poor health, loss of jobs, ruined relationships. Didn't realize what was happening to me for a long time and after I moved out, it took over a year to recover well enough to work again. I would definitely not move in till the mold is gone. You should not work in there without a respiration mask. Sorry don't want to crush your dreams but I do not want you to go through what I went through!❤
Oh and also moisture draws termites which were destroying what the mold wasn't. It is such a wonderful place I hope it won't be too much of a headache for you. Much luck and love! You're strong you can do it! 😊
Well, another interest of mine happens to be home renovation so you starting a home renovation series is absolutely incredible. You make it so entertaining despite all the hard work you’re already doing on the house! Incredible.
Uh, YES .... I think I can speak for all of us .... we will watch the transformation from drab to FABULOUS
YES I would watch !
I would watch too
I would also watch
So do I
I would watch it from Spain to take notes for my future home
1.roof asap
2. Rent or buy storage container
Empty the house
3.get three bids on the ceiling repair
4.hire professional cleaners to rid any mold and mildew
This is the best advice and to do list I’ve seen in the comments
is that really possible to get rid of this kind of mold contamination?
Probably check out the mold first, because it can cause major health problems
@@rinipork It's going to cost a ton of money IF it can even be done. There's also a ton of rot, due to water damage. It might have to be take down to the studs.

Please consider asking universities and architecture museums if they would like to acquire his papers, especially any that he taught or presented at! That way, the institution will archive all of the papers and architectural renderings. This is a rare collection of intact midcentury history. You'd be contributing to scholarship on the architecture, aesthetics, and values of the era.
Great idea!
Commenting so this comment gets traction and she sees it
Yes please!
Love this idea
Yes! For sure!
Art historian here- i am stunned at this find. You have something rare. Once in a thousand lifetimes. Im so excited to follow this journey.
Me too
I am curious as to how Jenna could afford to buy the house, as well as how she can afford to renovate it.
@@twistoffate4791 I hope she restores, not renovates!
@@twistoffate4791social media influencers can make killer bank and the house is on the brink of collapse 😂
I'm scared they're going to gut the house and it will lose all it's charm.
Don't know who you are, never watched a single video, but if you restore this absolute gem of a Mid-Century Modern home, I will absolutely be here for every episode.
I came here to comment basically the same thing
Yes... and don't change a thing, save all the contents.

yep same here...cant wait to see what you do@@amystreasuresdesign
Same here, it's a fascinating house.
Also an architect here and I just subscribed for this house alone. Please do it justice, love that you love the original elements! Step 1 fix the roof, step 2 mold remediation and framing replacement, step 3, have fun with the finishes and archiving all the treasures and letters inside!
I agree, please do this MCM beauty justice! I would love to see you lean into the mid century vibe of the living room. This house is a dream. ❤️
Yes!!
Yes!!!
Roof first! Haul away all the trash, molded items so you have space to work, as more will come down...
What andi said; I wouldn't move in without having the mold checked.
Using some of the keepsakes as decor would be SO CUTE. Framing old love letters, repurposing previous art AHHH IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS
This house is an architectural masterpiece. It deserves respect.
Masterpiece? lol No, it is not a masterpiece, but it's a pretty cool find.
Skip ahead a few episodes and you’ll see what actually will happen to this “architectural masterpiece”. Hoo boy.
@@johnpacella9519 yeah, well........
I don't know how I ended up here but this house is a dream come true to me. Please, please keep as much of it original as you can. It's a gem and it's only original once! I'd defo frame the old architects drawings too, that would be a nice nod to the history and previous owners. Amazing! Good luck!
I have no faith she is. She did use the words this house was built 75000 years ago.
This house is giving me Frank Lloyd Wright vibes!
When she said she didn't know how she was going to get that old dresser and mirror out of the master bedroom I actually said "don't" out loud. So much gorgeous furniture in this home.
a mid century GEM!!!!! cannot wait to see how you shine this bad boy up!
Real GEM, save the architectural qualities, every wall was designed with thought, good luck
As an architect, you can truly see that this was an architect’s home!! The spatiality and its details are craaaaaaazy! Really excited for these series
The J.B. Waring 3 volume set sells usually between 2k and 5k USD. That could help with renovations 😊
Honey.. I LIVE for house renovating series on youtube. You better show us the progress!

she made a new channel just for this I think! It's @buildwithjenna
Same! Any recommendations for good immersive renovating series?
What I love most about Jenna being the one to renovate this house is that I know she will not only respect the original vibe of it but also add to it in her own special way!! I just know it will come out so beautiful and unique ❤
An architect here, you have no idea how much I wanted to be there just to see it in real life. It’s BEAUTIFUL. So excited to watch the renovation journey 🙏🏻
As an architect wouldn’t you also understand the issues and mold and all the other work she would have to do to make it safe to live in?
@@brontohen that why they haven't said "if you need a hand just let me know" 🤣
@@brontohen yeah so? Isn’t she going to renovate it?

Love how many words you put into this first comment. That is commitment

I really hope she reads the comments like these, this video has me so worried
Exactly, asbestos is a reeeaaaaally big problem in old houses!
Thank you for bringing your knowledge. It doesn't just help her, but a lot of us watching that might want to do some things ourselves!
The government has brainwashed you
This is in Canada.
Top down
Roof structure and roofing first.
Beautiful mid- century designs.
whoaa a channel that isn't obsessed with stripping old houses of what makes them unique and beautiful. feels too good to be true, that stone wall is gorgeous and all the clean lines and natural light amazinggg

Tha roof… tha roof… tha roof is on fiare…
Danger zone
yup, great advice
I don't think she realizes she is white.
I see A LOT of potential in this house and I'm really excited to watch what you do with it!
yes black mold is so dangerous!! makes sure you get rid of of before you move in. also asbestos
Oh for sure! Mold, lead, asbestos. So dangerous! I did a remodel last year and popcorn ceiling had asbestos. Expensive to have it removed but luckily no one was living there at the time. Gonna be a whole lotta work! But gorgeous house lol
Would totally watch a house reno on this place.
That glass bottle in the rec room is potentially worth a little bit of money, if you haven’t tossed it already, you should look it up. It’s a particular type of glass from the 70’s and there are those of us that are collecting them again because it’s a part of our childhood.
Is it Blenko?
OMG YOU HAVE GOLD!! Please keep all those lamps, chairs, couches, dressers. Those are GOLD!!! Please keep the paneling. Take out, fix the mold and all that then put it back. It’s a dream. congrats. 🎉
Unfortunately - keeping any items will always have mold in them. Mold toxicity is no joke people! She should also not be breathing this all in! Get a mold remediation team to test what is in there!
Right, like anything she CAN keep that isn’t affected by mold, etc… she could potentially sell to help pay for any renovations
Trueeeeee
Please frame some of the blueprints for wall decor. Such a cool house. Congratulations!!!🎉
That would be awesome to see

That drafting equipment equipment can be as well.
thats SO COOL!
10:00 just a note that is not a Christmas tree. It is a decanter, and those are highly sought after among MCM enthusiasts😊 and collectors, highly recommend keeping it, and or selling it.
I was like oooh that is a great decanter! It would be awesome if she kept it and put it in her finished house. If not definitely worth selling it!

Yes. The water damage looks severe. And it’s almost everywhere. But as you said still a beautiful home.
And please don't keep any of the porous furniture!!! It's probably full of mold spores 😫😫
Yeah I've done a few home renovations and was thinking this as I watched. This house needs a TON of work. If she doesn't want to spend the next ten years renovating it herself, she's gonna need to hire some crews to come in, which gets super expensive super quick
Start with a structural engineer!
I hope Jenna reads your comment
Girl! That house is a gem! It’s gonna cost a bloody fortune to bring it back but you can sell it for a bloody fortune if you do I bet.
jepp I thought the same...its a time capsule looks like a furniture advert from 1962 - Mad Men style at its best....I would preserve as much as possbile, throwing away all the rotten ceiling insulatoon and give it a super pro cleaning
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH well in this case she did say that she bought it from a family member of the original owner.

This is so exciting!!
yes check for mold and asbestos
Do you know where this is? It's such a beautiful area! I would live in a shack in this area.
It’s a bit sad to see the house in that state, but you can definitely see what it used the look like in the past. And of course, what it might look like once again.
And I’ll definitely watch that journey!

100% agreed😉
Just subscribed so I can follow the progress :)
No need to test, it's plainly visible that there's both all over the house. LOTS of water ingress from the no longer functioning flat roof
It's important to get mould tested before starting the remediation process to know what types of mould you're dealing with and to know the full extent of it, and for when you retest after remediation.
Wow, wow can't wait! 😁👏🍍
I worked for a mover in the past they do have third-party companies that come out and disassemble, pool tables and remove
We got a 100Yr old house. Lots of lead paint, but the fluffy stuff in the attic turned out to not be asbestos. Yay. First job was a new roof to keep the water out.
You’re already my favorite RUclipsr but the idea of renovation and decoration videos is quite possibly the best thing so far in 2024
Love the positivity when you walked through the house and the items you wanted to save.
If she needs reno funds, could sell them to museum/collector).
They could also be called illuminated manuscripts...either way a treasure to be taken care of!
YES!!! to everything that has already been said!!!
Would definitely definitely watch the renovations from you,,,,you are hilarious ❤
This is outdated advice. Black mold does not kill or take years off your life. Look into modern research on it.
@@dmurphy5689 you may have already tried this, but activated charcoal on an empty stomach is how I got rid of my mould toxicity. The porous charcoal "captures" the mould sitting in the gut.
You have an absolute Mid-century Modern gem. It's a big project, but keep as much of the original design elements as you can.
😂
But she said this is gonna be MY bedroom 😅 seemed like he was saying we more than her, either way super excited to watch this transform
And we are all so excited for you!💖
Praise His HOly Name.
The original furniture …. The wood paneling …. The architecture… I’m in love .. Congratulations!!!! Wishing you lots of fun and perseverance!
Except it's covered in mold. So no - she cannot keep a lot of it.
Omg! The dresser in the master bedroom matched the drawings in the ‘architecture’ room! I hope you keep that piece. 🥹
I don't think she has enough sense. She should let the local historical society categorize all of the letters and the books of this person. She has no respect of history.
@@lindamcconnell9441do you know her personally
Letters, moments, fixtures, stone, the kitchen divider *chefs kiss*
I'm here for all the Jenna content. Proud of you and how far you've come and evolved. Horray for your new long-term journey!
@9:56 "We gotta frigging Christmas tree over here" as she pulls out a GORGEOUS Empoli genie bottle WITH the stopper!!! My heart!
I said “ not a treeeee, Empoli!!”
Most of the decor in general in this house that are still good are amazing! Vintage lovers honey hole right there!
She doesn't know what she has 😭
I came to the comments to see if someone said something about the Empoli bottle.
I pray that she didn’t trash it!
Looking for this comment! Thank you! That's crazy. Who knows what else is in this house of value
I completely agree with this! As someone who also has dealt with mold and mold illness, it’s sooooo important to be on top of it! 🫶🏽🙏🏽
I would also KEEP the working appliances in the kitchen, (and elsewhere), especially as they came on,
as you will never find that high quality in any appliance now, unless you can afford VERY expensive ones!
You have a big and expensive journey ahead of you
I absolutely love the pink and blue sinks and toilets! Outstanding!
Your boyf already sounds happier and supportive for you than the past hubby. Im happy for you😊😊
As someone who was watching the house since day one from TikTok I’m happy to see longer versions of the renovations 😂
I totally agree with the good bones
You just need patience a vision and love to make this sooooo BEAUTIFUL
IM HERE FOR IT
Also for the letters, maybe scan them in and sort them as a type of archival of the houses past? That would be so cool and lovely
Ugh love watching home restoration where the people can appreciate the uniqueness of old homes!! And watching you guys fawn over the old letters/books/trinkets is so cute. Glad this house is in good hands🫶
Jenna. i am so glad u arent ripping out old cool vintage tubs ,tiles and toilets...i love when a house is dated and a person keeps the era as it is. cool thing to do. love your house u bought! i would watch this with great interest. we purchased a 100 yr old house years ago. fixed it up. resold it in 4 days with no inspection and cash. now we live in an old house that will be 100 years old in 2028...if we live that long cause we are old. cool. video!
Fun! Our house is a 141 year old cream city brick farmhouse. She is quirky for sure.
I am so glad this house is hers. She clearly appreciates antique/vintage stuff. It will be amazing!
Ooooh auctions like that would also be amazing content! I would love to see which pieces end up being hidden treasures!
exactly my thoughts, alot of art also.
I hope she appraises almost everything, things she doesnt want to keep can be sold to help pay for the renovations of the house :)
Holy crap you’ve got a treasure here and I can see your love for the original details already. Following for your restoration process!
Except these items are in a moldy house. Don't sell moldy items - getting everyone sick! Even if you can't see it - it's there. She will learn this lesson when she gets mold professionals on how most of this stuff should be thrown out. This is the reason this house was sold as is.
@@FS-zl9mhthank you so much for all your comments. I am sick at 25 with toxic mold and am so stressed watching this
@@brontohen It's sad to see so many people not understand about mold/mold toxicity - and how sick people can get.
I think it would be so cool to frame the old architecture blueprints or love letters to hang up! I collect old postcards and it’s my favorite thing!!
Watching this again after episode like 29 is extra funny
Not sure if anybody else pointed it out, but the dresser in the master bedroom 6:15 is possibly one of the furniture pictured in the dinning room area designs 3:20 . Super cool!
I hope you take your time going through the stuff instead of just hiring a dumpster and trashing all of it--which unfortunately most people do because of the time it takes to actually sort. I would watch a whole series just on what you find and how you either keep, redo or sell stuff in the house.
me too! there's so much fun midcentury furniture in there
YES!! PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME 😫
YESSSSSSS!
So excited to watch your journey!!
"Do you think people would watch that on your channel?", he asked. I've subscribed expressly to watch you renovate this jewel.
Same please show every step!
Ditto!
Incredible.
