    The finals is a good example of the problem imo. Theres tons of fun weapons like grenade launchers, melee weapons, shotguns, snipers. But the automatic weapons are always so much more viable simply because they have much better range and comparable dmg. Devs are scared to have non AR weapons be meta and it's honestly annoying. You would think hitting direct hits with a grenade launcher would have a higher dps then a rifle but apparently not lol.

    • @pudsla9427
      @pudsla9427 9 месяцев назад +33

      quit the finals really soon after playing it. Its a thing with all newer shooters now. ARs are always the objectively better option so all the weapons I wanted to use like the shotgun and grenade launcher just felt useless and when I did use an AR the game became wayyy easier. TF2 does not have this issue and both full auto and semi auto weapons are balanced in such a way that there is way more depth and uncertainty to most encounters. Couple that with a high time to kill and beautifully deep movement mechanics and you have the one shooter I haven't been able to stop playing for almost 8 years now. I can't get over how all other shooters feel in comparison, it's just a full auto gun convention most of the time to me. We need more games like tf2 that got those quake roots. THAT'S how you make a shooter that'll last in my opinion

    • @kubaGR8
      @kubaGR8 9 месяцев назад +21

      I do enjoy assault rifles, but only in games that make fully automatic fire vs single shot a realistic choice.
      One example is milsim games like Ready or Not / Ground Branch. You can spray and pray with rifles but realistically you're going to miss most shots and waste 90% of the clip.
      Another is, surprisingly, the orignal Fallout games. Full-auto fire can do tremendous damage, but is innaccurate, chews through ammo, and is unpredictable in that you can miss the intended target and accidentally murder the nearby teammate.
      But games like Battlefield, there's really no reason to ever control your fire, you just hold down the left mouse button.

      It is incomprehensibly common for games to have the most boring, zero strategy-requiring weapons be the meta, while the skill-requiring, situational weapons have pitiful DPS or even just general freedom. There are hundreds upon thousands of examples, but I will use one roblox game of my liking as a base.
      The general meta weapon this game has is the "Ninja Whip", It's basically just a melee version of the pyro's flamethrower. Broken DPS, wide AOE, fast and spammy, and an Alt-Fire that pulls enemies in. With all my hours of using It, I never got even the slightest dopamine boost no matter how many kills or dominations, and It is the mastermind of 80% of one-sided encounters in the game. A prime example of a 'Lose-Lose' weapon.
      On the other hand, lesser used yet creative weapons, like the fists, are basically free kills in most situations. The fists have the smallest melee range in the game, have great damage, give a passive 45% speed boost to anyone who equips It, and have an Alt-Fire in which you rapidly charge at your enemies direction and drag whoever is in the way, and potentially stunning them If they're caught onto a wall! That all sounds good on paper, right? You are completely vulnerable when charging, can be outran by people half your speed with how teeny tiny the range is, I've only been killed by It once!

    I think CS is really interesting; it was made in between the fast-paced 90's and early 00's and the slow, modern military FPS games of the 2010s. It still has assault rifles, but they come with heavy recoil that has patterns specific to the gun, making it hard to master. A very fitting middle-ground between the two eras.

      Honorable mention to the AUG, and SG553, as you can ADS with those. Also CS's reloads aren't realistic (the ones CS2/GO use from 2011 are generally just "acceptable" at best) and (yes I am stretching it here) "sprinting" psuedo exists, but only as a game mechanic around what weapon you're holding. I guess depending on how you look at it, CS has "some" modern game aspects, but it all seems moreso accidental that the tropes are being followed than intentional.

    I think, if you want to have tracking based weapons in a slow game, you have to do it like Halo.
    They give you a very large health pool, relatively slow movement speed, with *a lot* of tactical options in between. The few "twitch" (burst) weapons that Halo has are extremely potent "power weapons," like the Shotgun or Sniper rifle.
    I think games now-a-days have tried to distill the formula (of FPSs) as much as they can, but skipped out on the stuff that made that formula work. They have extremely fast TTK, with relatively fast speed, and a massive kill-to-bullet ratio. Not to mention the fact that grenades, a once really fun and game-changing item, are now just angry rocks.

    • @Spoon80085
      @Spoon80085 9 месяцев назад +24

      I also think the prevalence of the head-shot speaks to the blandness of shooters now. It used to be high-risk high-reward, or not used at all (like in TF2) or very sparingly (Like in Halo). You can't just throw it in everywhere and expect it to work, because it worked in Call of Duty in 2008

      Halo is hurt by precision weapons being massively overpowered over anything else. Like Infinite is groundbreaking for a Halo game for having AR deal an useful amount of damage instead of kinda tickling the enemy. They had to make all weapons headshot in infinite to keep the game being dominated by headshotting weapons like pistol and BR, especially BR. The worst thing is, original Halo didn't have such a severe problem with precision weapons. Sure CE pistol is infamous for being a three shot kill, but all the other guns (outside of needler) were appropiately powerful to gain some edge, like Plasma Rifle being the ideal ambush weapon since it slowed enemies down, so they would die before turning around to return fire.

    I think the AAA games industry took the issue of 'games aren't fast anymore' and thought that meant that people wanted a lower TTK. One of the main reasons why shotguns in modern FPS games (and ARs for that matter) feel so much worse is that your character can spontaneously collapse in a quarter of a second, ARs feel the same, and shotguns have no nuance or because three or four pellets in the spread does like all of your health.

    • @simplysmiley4670
      @simplysmiley4670 7 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah honestly.
      When an AR (or even just an SMG) that you can spray and pray in general direction of the enemy can already kill them nigh instantaniously, or literally in an instant be it because of low AF time to kill or overtuned headshots on everything and your mother, shotguns don't feel satisfying to use. Why nuke someone with 4 times the damage at point blank range if you could do the same with a bullet hose?

It has a good dynamic between ensuring you hit each precision shot, and using hard strafes and grenades in order to get a slight advantage in a gunfight that makes the whole thing feel like less like a traditional gunfight and more like a duel. Halo's precision guns dont maintain the range limitations that shotguns carry, but it still carries a lot of the same quirks in gameplay.

    Assault rifles and shotguns have been an interesting topic for a good chunk of the gaming industry's lifetime at this point; we have plenty of examples that support one or the other, and their own individual flaws:
    - Dirty Bomb's shotguns were primarily bodyshot weapons and had shoddy headshot multipliers, so the player really was encouraged to just go for the biggest target instead of still trying to make precision hits at close range. I think this came at the cost of some enjoyment because making them precision weapons would also allow their range to be a bit increased while retaining that "you deal damage by clicking heads" aspect, but unfortunately that didn't happen and they were just the noob cannon bodyshot weapon they are commonly known as. It was awful.
    - In Battlefield 3, shotguns were considered to be powerhouses and many servers outright banned their use, because it wasn't fun to just never have to try to kill someone and have the game do it for you when you vaguely clicked near someone. It was awful.
    - In Insurgency (not Sandstorm or the Source mod), shotguns only had a place as supply point economy and actually needed headshots, but it was always easier to grab the cheapest rifles (M16 and AKM) and putting AP rounds to literally one-shot anyone on the chest with the 30 fucking round magazine. Shotguns then had a slow reload, harder time doing damage and lower capacity and people really only picked them because they were left with the class that couldn't use the M16 or AKM. It was awful.
    - Ghost Recon Wildlands pretty much had no shotguns compared to its massive arsenal of assault rifles, and even the SMGs and LMGs were just the player begging to eat shit from the harder difficulties due to low damage, low accuracy, or a combination of both; I never found enjoyment in the arsenal despite the game itself being fun, since I don't like being pigeonholed into assault rifle with 50-round magazine + sniper rifle with suppressor. It was awful.
    - TF2 didn't have assault rifles. It was awesome.
    Actually my "plenty of examples" was one game supporting shotguns. Turns out having a versatile automatic weapon with good damage, good ammo capacity, good range, good recoil and good accuracy is not exactly making the case good for the other weapons that are supposed to be fun. Actually, did you know that in Dirty Bomb, the favorite SMG of players was the one closest to an assault rifle? Yeah.

    One thing that always rubs me the wrong way with games that do feature ARs and automatic weapons in general, is how those same games _heavly_ reward just, spraying and praying with a funky little mechanic that shooters nowadays must have because others did before them, which is, headshots on everything. Where those headshots are either instakills no matter what or effectively drop time to kill to nigh instantanious, so weapons that reward aim and punish misses are, effectively pointless when you can grab a fast firing SMG, spray it in the general direction of the enemy, doink them in the head once or twice and win the engagement all while you spazz out crouching leaning and jumping to not get randomly headshot yourself.
    All while your effective range is pretty much _any_ range, from right in someone's face to hidden in a bush on another continent.

  • @ParasocialCatgirl
    @ParasocialCatgirl 9 месяцев назад +9

    I'd say that Splatoon greatly suffers from 'assault rifle syndrome'.
    So, for context, bunch of weapon classes that behave in different ways (for example there's chargers and splatlings which are your charge-to-fire snipers/miniguns, blasters are pretty much rocket launchers, and sloshers which are buckets you yeet ink with, among others), and within each weapon class there are individual weapons with completely unique behaviours to each other (such as the default slosher and tri-slosher which work like buckets you yeet, the sloshing machine and explosher which work like grenade launchers, and the bloblobber which lobs a line of four bouncing blobs).
    Then theres the shooter weapon class.
    Shooters are effectively your assault rifles.
    A couple of them may have unuque gimmicks (L-3 and H-3 are burst-fire, and the squeezer is mostly semi-auto (1st shot is strong then the rest are weak)), but pretty much all of them function identically besides the stats.
    Now, quick bit of context before the next point: In Splatoon, your main/sub weapon/special weapon 'kit' is all bound together. You can only use the main/sub/special kits that Nintendo has added to the game. Want to use Range Blaster but don't like the sticky bomb and wave breaker? Tough shit.
    Well, as of now, a disproportionately large number of the kits in the game are for Shooters. Usually weapons only get up to two kits each (eventually), and if a weapon doesn't recieve a good kit, its practically useless. There are quite a lot of shooters with similar (good!) stats to each other and very good kits. However, for the main weapons in the other weapon classes - many of them are still stuck with a single horrible kit. And some have the misfortune of two similarly abysmal kits (rendering the main weapons practically unusable).
    These two factors combine to cause shooters to be overwhelmingly more common than the other, more interesting, weapon classes, simply because there are more good shooter options than there are in any other weapon class.
    Which is a shame, really, because it causes the more unique weapon options which are only in Splatoon (like your sloshers, brellas, brushes, rollers, and stringers) to be mostly absent from the game. Outcompeted by the utterly derivative assault rifle stand-in.

    • @InternetMonster1
      @InternetMonster1 9 месяцев назад +2

      I'd argue that Splatoon doesn't have as much of an issue because the shooter weapons in the game are mostly effective at close-mid-range (with exceptions), also Splatoon rapid-fire weapons kill in 3-4 shots most of the time, so each individual shot is very important and impactful. An issue with a lot of assault rifles is the lack of satisfying feelings when landing shots and how they invalidate other weapons. A weapon like the Roller has about the same range as the base Splattershot, just that the roller instantly kills at point blank while the Splattershot has better sustained fire at the range where the roller does kills in 2-3 shots. So it isn't a situation where a roller cannot compete against a shooter. Splatoon is also just a very movement heavy game, so Assault Rifle standoffs are uncommon.
      The only real oppressive Assault Rifle style weapons in Splatoon are the .98 Gal and the Splattershot Pro. Jet Squelcher's small shots and slow kill time make it kind of meh.
      Most non-shooter weapons are backlines or fill a unique niche playstyle, thus most teams will want at least 2 shooters. The proportionally low amount of non-shooter weapons make sense.
      I really enjoy the Rapid Blaster Pro, Mini Splattling, Undercover Brella and Splattershot Pro. Though the last game I played was Splatoon 2, because I don't buy into Nintendo's wifi subscription.

    i think a game that pulls of rifles well is probably tarkov, now there's alot wrong with this game so i absolutely don't blame anyone for not wanting to try it, hopefully i'll be able to recommend it more when it finally comes out, but for now you'll just have to trust me bro (or subject yourself to horrors no man deserves), alot of it comes from just how hard everything is in the game, so from crossing the map, to killing a bot, to stealing loot from a kill you didn't even do is satisfying and rewarding, but also cuz i think it balances shotguns and rifles pretty well, shotguns actually have decent range and doesn't just turn into pixy dust when you shoot something more then 2 feet away, especially with slugs, youre not defenseless purely due to distance, unless you're up against a sniper, and tarkov has a good amount of indoor urban environments to fight close quarters in, but also because of its mag system, you have to repack mags, and keep track of what has ammo and whats full and so on, shotguns dont have this issue, and with high amount of weapon customization you can turn a shotgun into a borderline sniper if you really wanna, but of course shotguns aren't everything as mentioned in this video having room for error is very important, so while having some huge drum mag is really strong, there's a trade off, also bullets actually coming out of the gun i personally find satisfying, cuz shits not just gonna fly into the ceiling despite the weapon on screen aiming right at your target, encouraging hip fire (or point shooting) making even the act of tracking engaging cuz you dont just have a cross hair and may not have time to aim down sights

      The issue is that depending on the map design and balance, it is quite easy to veer between overbearing or useless shotguns. A map with mostly mid range combat and lowish TTK could result in shotguns being better all the time. Longer ranges render them mostly useless or niche unless you crank up the damage to OHKO levels.
      shotgun type weapons also allow peekaboo shooting against tracking weapons, when TTK is increased. Have decent cover and shotguns once again become more viable.
      Because well, most militaries use ARs for good reason, they do work decently against everything. But it makes balancing for niche weapons more of a pain.

      Sure, but that doesn't make balancing shotguns and rifles any easier. A somewhat close quarters map with cover to hide behind would give a big advantage to shotgun's high burst over the constant tracking for rifles. Extend the range more, then shotguns become a niche ambush tool and little else.
      Halo has high TTK, but shotguns are still pigeon-holed into the mash-up-the-butt doom cannon due to its artificially low range.

    Tf2 in particular I also enjoy because beyond sniper and the ambassador, there's no headshots. You can do well by placing your crosshair on center mass and shoot your shotgun. Shotguns have been my favorite weapons in video games ever since I first realized that I suck with snipers. Assault rifles suck because there is no gratification to using them and they feel like a crutch to me. With ARs, if you miss some shots, there's almost always more where that came from. They reward the player for holding down the fire button and just spraying. Shotguns are just so much more fun, especially single-shots or double barrels. The fun is that you either hit and kill the enemy instantly or miss and have to dodge their bullets while you reload. I do have to condemn auto-shotguns however, as they are basically just assault rifle shotguns, a concept that deeply sickens me.

    Just clicked this video on a whim because me like shotgun, not expecting much, but I'm shocked at just how well this video puts into words how I myself feel about shotguns in shooters and why I've gravitated towards using them in recent years. I think Insurgency Sandstorm is a good example not only of a game that actually makes a mechanic out of reloading (you either reload slowly to retain the mag and ammo or reload quickly but lose all the ammo in the mag) but also allows you to spec out a shotgun for more general purpose application, it lets you operate within similar ranges as all the assault rifles but the slow operation and prioritizing reloading as well as the general speed of the game is a lot like your Fistful of Frags example. Pleasantly surprised by this vid, hope more devs realize that shotguns are badass and fun!
    (Also Synthetik has a really good reloading mechanic that would be cool to see in more games)
