Due to the very long nature of this video, and the sheer number of facts, here are a few known mistakes I didn't manage to catch before uploading:
    • Splendid Screen's bonus bash damage stat was incorrectly labelled as +80% instead of +70%
    • Normal air accel cap is apparently 30 hu/s regardless of your base movement speed.
    • According to the TF Wiki, Heavy apparently takes 50% less knockback, rather than 75% less.
    Music list:
    pastebin.com/7hdk3BJa
    Jump charge bind:
    bind PUTKEYHERE "+chargejump"
    alias +chargejump "+jump; +attack2"
    alias -chargejump "-jump; -attack2"
    Odin's video about charge stalling:
    • TF2 Downwards charging...
NotnHeavy's Turn Helper plugin (for displaying charge strafing details):
    github.com/NotnHeavy/TF2-Turn...
Since you cared enough to scroll down, may I interest you in a story?
This video will undoubtedly be the one to push me past 200k subscribers, so I want to use this opportunity to say "thank you". Not just for the support, but for being patient with how slow I am.
My slow upload schedule over the past few years can mainly be attributed to this video, or rather, what came before it. I spent a lot of time trying to make an in-depth video about the Tide Turner, TF2's most interesting weapon. But I ran into many snags. Namely, the video was too ambitious.
    The goal was:
    1. Make a Tide Turner weapon review
    2. Include a charging/trimping tutorial (uh oh)
    3. Somehow do this while keeping focus on the Tide Turner specifically (uh oh)
    4. Deep dive into the history of charge turning, the exploits, etc. (uh oh)
My old PC wasn't up for the task. Constant crashes were inevitable, even after splitting the project into TEN different files.
I ended up dumping many months into something that would never get finished. While a heatwave was cooking me, I got frustrated, and started working on something else. This resulted in the controller video I uploaded around this time last year.
As if things couldn't get any worse, the fan in my GPU started dying and I used this as an excuse to finally get a new rig, in the hopes of making longer projects actually feasible. It clearly worked, but this now meant I had to move the project and all of its files to the new PC. Not very fun.
After "Demoknight TF2 RETURNS" served its role as a test for what this new PC could do, I made the difficult decision to scrap the Tide Turner video, at least for now. Instead, a more reasonable goal was set: Make a video about JUST charging, and re-use as many assets from the unfinished video as possible. It still ended up being 1 hour long. The majority of gameplay was still recorded on the new PC, because it can run the game on much higher settings. But things like "mafs with Solar" were originally intended for a Tide Turner video.
If I ever decide to revisit the idea of a Tide Turner video in the future, it will be toned down. I will do my best to restore more unused SFM assets and jokes, but with the subject of charging finally covered, I don't have to include a whole charging guide with my weapon review anymore. And to be honest, it's probably better this way, since I was able to give the charging mechanic proper justice. There's still some things unaccounted for, but I got most of it!
Evidently, I'm a perfectionist, to a fault. I only want to make videos that I would actually want to watch. I'd rather upload nothing, than upload something disappointing or lackluster. Sometimes, this means spending months on a video, only for it to get scrapped. Sometimes, it means turning those past failures into a 1 hour, visually entertaining tutorial. Sometimes, it means repurposing cut content for a short meme upload, but not often.
Thank you for watching and reading. Praise the sun. Next time, it might be about a so-called scimitar. (Edit: No, it wasn't.)

4 months later, I have given this video's (English) subtitles a facelift! They should look fabulous, now.
A lot of people liked them in my latest video, so it makes sense to implement them here too!
This took about 2 days to sort out, and even then, it's a LONG VIDEO, so please let me know if you spot any typos or big timing issues in the subtitles.

My only complaint is the use of more saturated colors occasionally as the highlighting bit, though It's a minor grievance that can be overlooked for the quality of life this provides.

This isn't even adding the whole spaghetti wonky coconut load bearing .png code that is the game that is tf2.
Stuff like hitboxes and tick damages or tick resets really play into how you make it or break it.
      Ex: engy main here
Ive attacked people with the gunslinger melee for the lulz. Im able to sometimes hug tank a heavy to bypass minigun hitbox and ironically 2 hit 1st getting close then 2nd hug final one will literally bypass him and crit the medic healing him lmao. Then when you get a little back the bullets register and you take damage again.
      Or
Short circuit launching (though valve patched i believe take no self damage awhile back but then new shenanigans ensue).
Even when the entire source code leaks were released people were still finding tons of exploits bugs and fixes.

Rampsliding is important, but trimping is mostly the combination of charge strafing and rampsliding. This took up about 13 minutes, which is still pretty long.
Trimping also requires lots and lots of map knowledge (knowing where every slope is), which I can't exactly cover in this video.

A very underrated loadout is loose cannon, charge n charge and caber. It sounds insane but it is genuinely my favourite demo loadout. Admitedly there is a steep learning curve and having to change your standard demo play style but when it's mastered you turn what sounds like a meme into a legitimately viable loadout that turns whole teams into quivering pools of raspberry jam.
You focus on perfecting your cannon usage, always going for double donks against 1 to 2 targets at a time, typically staying a safe distance away but when there is three or more? That's when you cannon jump behind them, do 180 degrees and destroy them.
An example of one of my favourite times on two fort was when I was playing keep away with a pyro on the bridge, taking advantage of the fact he couldn't air blast my bombs back. I knocked him back and saw two heavies, a soldier and a medic coming from the top. I then ran back to the end of the bridge, cannon jumped over the bridge and charged behind them to delete the 5 of them before running back to spawn on 50 health. It's hard to explain how much joy I felt in that moment and the best way to describe it is how I imagine a charged creeper feels like when it sneaks up behind you to succesfully blow you and your house sky high.

When he mentioned the topic, I immediately knew it was framerate dependent. It's a problem for every game and there's usually no simple solution. Especially engines that have variable input/physics/calculations/rendering. If you render, do input polling and your calculations at 30hz, then that's the simple solution, but of course if you want to uncap the framerate your engine can run at, especially in regards to physics, then you end up with oddities like this.

The rapid Panic Attack switch speed makes it convenient to swap to the KGB to finish enemies off for easy crits. The Brass Beast naturally synergizes great with any shotgun because it dramatically off sets the downsides of the Brass Beast, due to improved repositioning and mobility.

Often times when im working on small personal projects of my own it can be very tedious and boring, and videos like these that i can turn on and listen to in the background help a absolute bunch with keeping the boredom at bay, i love this video so much that i feel as if im obligated to give you a small tip of money for your work, thank you and please keep making projects like these, because they are incredibly entertaining

Was cool to learn about how demoknight movement tech works. My favorite quirk was charging up very steep slopes without shield bashing.
Some points for the stuff that's related to rocket jump technicalities (one short and one long):
39:44 It's just hardcoded 30 u/s for all classes, no percentage. Unless you're charging I guess.
25:22 It is in idea 20%, but the problem is that it scales your whole velocity down to 120% of walking speed. You might think that your velocity is purely horizontal whenever you jump off flat ground, but TF2 applies gravity at the start of the tick no matter if you're grounded or not (6 u/s of downwards velocity). You don't see this with cl_showpos while standing still because at the end of the tick it removes all vertical velocity if you're grounded. The result of the gravity is that your speed (velocity magnitude) becomes a tiny big higher than your initial speed that was purely horizontal. As a consequence, every component of the velocity gets scaled down a bit more than intended, slightly hurting the final horizontal speed. The full calculation goes like this: new hspeed := 1.2 * maxspeed / sqrt(hspeed^2 + (-grav)^2) * hspeed. Manipulating the terms shows that your real horizontal bunnyhop speed is off by a factor of 1/sqrt(1 + (grav/hspeed)^2). The lower your horizontal speed is (still above walking speed), the greater the difference will be. The factor is always above 0.99 though, so it isn't really noticeable.

That end of the video really made me feel proud of the way I play heavy.
There's a reason "Fat Scouts" are usually funny and insane to watch.
Being a Heavy who utilizes the little movement he has to it's full potential to fend off against rockets, stickies and flying scouts and beating them all with stupid ass shotguns, while letting go of your main class tool, the minigun, along the beloved lunchbox items.
Is it practical? No. Is it reliable? No. It might be better in very specific situations, but overall, a much worse standard Heavy will often do better than you being a god Fat Scout.
But BOY IS IT FUN, specially when it fucking works.
I'll never forget that time when a Soldier showed up as I was fleeing at 7 health with my shotgun and managed to somehow dodge the blast of 4 rockets and beat him down with 5 shots, like the truest form of Fat SCOUT.
These are the reasons people plays niche "subclasses", not because they're good or reliable, but because they're fun. Being the underdog and winning is and will always be a morale boost, along with being a fucking ton of fun. Hell, even movies got that right
I may not learn how to become a godlike Demoknight, but I can now understand those who do a lot much better

Hey Solar, you don't remember me, but back a few years ago I found you in a Halloween server and dueled you out of the blue. You accepted, and ripped me a new one. It was a fantastic time either way and is one of my highlights of my TF2 career. I've had TF2 uninstalled for quite a while now and in the middle of my burnout you uploaded this guide.
So, even though I'm a Demo main, I've always wanted to get into Demoknighting but every time I do I end up getting like 2 kills and 20 deaths. Watching this video and using some of these tips (the jump charge one especially) just improved my gameplay tenfold. I was able to jump on an Uncletopia server and rack up to 10 heads each round consistently, it gave me such a rush that I haven't felt in years.

Question: What should be the optimal cl_yawspeed for turning with +left and +right? I've tried 210 and 230, but I get the stuttering effect when turning with the keys and the mouse at the same time. This makes it really hard to actually aim the charge, since I would need to solely use the turn keys without mouse movement. Yawspeed 100 I tested and I don't get the stuttering, but then I don't turn as much.

Starting off with working the stock setup with Chargin' Targe to get used to the core principles, and steadily starting to put turn control and pipe jumps into the mix, and now with this fun explanation to the steps I couldn't quite figure out in how to become a cruise missile, I boldly go off to attempt the next step of training.
tyvm for all the vids about the mechanics and the like and introducing me properly to my now favourite playstyle.

9:46 Don't worry Solar, I too have a thumb thing people often freak out about. I have what's called a "double joint" at the base of my thumbs. Where my thumbs meet my palms, I have an extra joint I can slightly bend outwards in my palms' direction. Every time somebody's seen me do it for the first time, they freak out cause they think my thumbs are broken, and then I have to explain to them that it's just something I can do.

@@trbz_8745 They didn't when I was a kid pal, not to mention the fact that the reason I went out of my way to explain cause there's multiple types of double joints. Maybe think about that next time before you rush in to be all "lol bro" about it.

LMAO the junction love. Cool effect showing trails at trims spots. Would be cool to have like a flyover of maps showing trimp lanes with trails

Yeah, this is the stuff I like to learn. Something I'll never use, but Solarlight is just so entertaining. I actually still appreciate Solar for making that controller video. I kinda main controller cuz I grew up with it since I was 5 years of age. So when I hopped on, and people took notice I was using one, it was actually great to see people be nice to me for once.
Normally when I use controller on PC, people say a lot of mean things, but the TF2 community has been pretty accepting of it ever since Solar's vid. Forever thankful for that.

Probably the most useful thing I learned in this video was the fact you can bind multiple commands to a single key...
That's gonna make me expert engineer in no time.
