    what I know about these pencils that is necessary to use light pressure to make a lot of layers (5, 6 layers) to blend a lot of colors and reach a good degrade. you are using too much pressure for them, try to use again with light pressure.

    The formula is consistent with these pencils.The texture difference you see happens when you start building layers, it doesn't matter whether it's one colour or many, it starts of highly textured, and the more you add on, the smoother it gets. I've used Faber Castell ever since I was a child, and refuse to use any other brand, as they have the best quality and most use for my style.

      The paper cool be the issue also. That recycled toned paper always has little fuzzy bits that tend to become a problem if you use harder colored pencils like these. Prismacolor is so soft that this isn't an issue. Use these on hotpress or smooth Bristol & you won't have any issues. Tbh I've had WAY more issues with prismas being inconsistent, with little flecks of darker pigment that I have to scratch off because they ruin the color. 😖😭💔 Faber's have never betrayed me in such a way, although I do wish that they were a bit more buttery in consistency. . . But at least they don't break every few times you sharpen them. It evens out. 😅😜

    One reason I prefer Faber Castell to some of the cheaper brands is that it is possible to replace and/or supplement the colors by buying them one at a time, which the very cheap brands will not let you do. Also, I have heard that they work really well with Color Pencil Blender on sanded paper and once I save up, I want to try this - it looks like it is almost like working with colored pastels, but you can layer much more easily.

    • @philipnorris5549
      @philipnorris5549 6 лет назад +3

      I use both the polychromos coloured pencils and carbothello pastel pencils. I use stonehenge or fabiano paper (with zest spirits for blending) for the pc and sennelier la carte pastel card for the carb's. The pastel pencils can layer many times more than the poly's and blending is much better plus you can still get fine detail and results much faster (like 4 times as fast) but for small drawings I would go with the poly's and anything above a5/a4 size would have to be the carb's.

    • @sarakg4210
      @sarakg4210 6 лет назад

      I find using Bristol board pretty good to blend on since it's super smooth and you can later a lot and there's not a lot of texture. I do use prismacolors so my experience might be different

    • @dreamrabbits5072
      @dreamrabbits5072 2 года назад +1

      @@sarakg4210 It won't work for higher end pencils, they need tooth on the paper to fill up. Polyochromos works best on sanded paper, it's like a completely different pencil.

  • @silaspitch9485
    @silaspitch9485 5 лет назад +58

    Thanks for the review! I'm not a color pencil artist, but I'm interested in getting started with the medium.
    Actually, if a may point out an important technical matter, the difference in blending that you experienced with different colors is the result of variations in binder/filler/pigment formulation due to the different physical properties of various pigments used in the formulation of a particular color core. High quality pigments, many of them natural, vary greatly in hardness, solubility, and working properties. The result of this is that the formulation for each of the different color pencil cores must vary in an attempt to achieve consistency; this consistency is never really achieved due to the essential differences in these pigment properties.
    In reality, variance in artistic handling properties across a color range is often the very mark of superb pigments used in the various formulations. Pastel artists, in particular, are intimately aware of this, and very often hold discussions as to the best way to work with a certain pigment from a certain brand. As high-quality pastels are nearly all pigment, it is quite easy to feel, and even see, the differences in pigment properties. Some pigments used in professional pastels are so soft as to nearly crumble under the slightest pressure and blend like pure fine powder, while others are soft but gritty, some are a medium hardness but are great for impasto effects, and others are harder still but seem to blend well, and so on.

      To be honest, which brand is better suited depends on your technique entirely. I'm very, very lighthanded and i love to layer so Polychromos are for me (blending is easy with Polychromos this way). If you want results faster and want to be done in three layers Prismacolor is probably your best bet. I cringed a bit when i saw how heavyhanded she was in the video. That's why the green didn't blend that well. You could see her Prismacolor-Approach to the Polychromos. She would've had better results, if she would've taken her time to learn them. As they are totally different than the Prismacolor (like day and night different).
      The last point that they have the exact same color range as all Faber Castell Lines is true. I use the Polychromos and the Albrecht Dürer and they have the same colors.

    The thing with Faber Castell is that they require a completely different technique for blending than Prismacolors. Being oil based the blending is done through layering thin layers of color on top of one another. It's.... tedious and not for the heavy handed, but the blending is sooooo smooth once you're finished it's amazing.

    I really love Faber Castell as a brand. Basically all their art supplies are high quality and I really enjoy using them. Here in Germany I guess it's the most popular brand. I've been using Faber Castell pencils all my life.

    I remember when I first got a set of Faber Castell from my brother. I was so excited it was like Christmas lol. He and I both sketched alot and he could blend colours so beautifully even with low priced pencils. That's why he gave me his Faber Castell set ,because he preferred the low priced ones as they blended easily and had good pigment. I now only own budget low priced pencils because I prefer them.

    i got the 120 and i dont regret it
    It definitely takes patience to be able to use them
    also using light layers and then i would recommend burnishing said layers with the lightest shade used in that area
    im considering getting the luminance as they are a blend of oil and wax based so id be able to get its blendabilty and still be able to add the finer details and textures with the polychromos

  • @TinchenBlubber

    I don't even know how I got here... but oh well...
    I bought the 36-pencils-set a while ago, and at first I, too, struggled with blending. The thing with this pencils is, that they don't really smudge - as advertised - which makes it hard for everyone used to smudge the colours, as I for example am. But it does have great benefits and it just needs different handling to actually blend the colours. As I experienced it, you make the most out of the pencils if you have a high enough amount of colour on the paper - with the pencils being so hard, you also need some colour on the paper to get rid of the visible paper structure. That's also the point where one actually benefits from having a broader range of colours, blendig here seems to be more about layering the colours than about trying to mix/smudge two of them. So I'd say it's not quite true that the different shades blend differently, but the parts of your drawing, where you pressed harder on the paper, because you liked the darker look, are just the parts of your drawing that had a bigger amount of colour and therefore blended more nicely.
    I hope that helps, those pencils are great once you get used to them. If you got any questions, or would like me to better explain what I mean just ask.
    Have a nice day! :)

      The correct way to achieve darker or saturated colors with these pencils is to paint layer by layer, without pressing. This way you will get excellent finishes. To remove the strokes and make it more homogeneous, the ideal is to use a blender of your brand of trust.
      I added a link as an example: www.amazon.es/KOH-I-NOOR-Artistas-L%C3%A1piz-colores-Blender/dp/B010HEORS4/ref=sr_1_4?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1518463544&sr=1-4&keywords=l%C3%A1piz+blender

    Different types of pencils need different types of blending and layering.
    The formula is 100% consistent in every Polychromo pencil. Some Pigments are harder than others, but you will notice that in all pencils, that depends on the pigment itself.
    The difference you experienced, is that you have more layers on the jaw than on the green spot. If you use Polychromos its all about layering and building it up. As more layers, as smoother the surface gets. Thats the main difference between oil and wax, very soft wax in Prismacolors. You can do so much more layers with the Polychromos (without waxbloom) that you wouldn't be able to with Prismacolors. Often you don't need blending tools because you blend it in while layering up and blending afterwards is harder compared to e.g. Prismacolors, simply because you don't have wax that you can push around. Hope you understand or can imagine what I mean. Prismacolors take the amount of wax on a so high level that you can't even compare them with Polychromos from how they work because that are two opposite extrems.
    In germany Prismacolors aren't very common, most don't like the waxy look, so you buy them for a price of the lowest end of an artistgrade, more better studentgrade based from the pricerange. Maybe also 'cause it's not common to use OMS, what much people use with prismacolors. OMS is very hard to get here, usually you have to import them. I heard (often times) that artist or students that color with Prismacolors get bullied here and called fake-artist because they don't know how to blend and use the cheaty way.
    I think it's personal preference what you like to use, yes you may need different techniques but it depends on all together what you choose and prefer for yourself. Even if you can build up and layer perfectly, that doesn't mean you like it. I use waxbased pencils too but Prismas are way to greasy for my preference. Maybe I'll try them out again, if the quality control gets better

  • @samanthas6724
    @samanthas6724 3 года назад +11

    I know you probably know this by now and the pencils have improved so much, cuz it's been like 3 years-but ima say it anyways, that the more layers you put down the easier they're to blend.

    Pencil: 2B, HB, 6B, and 2H
    Also came with a 0.4 pen, grip color marker and a pen brush. And a small booklet that tells you about shading,how to hold a pencil to get different affects on the paper. The sketchbook came with a grid pane to trace, tracing paper and 5-8 pages of yellow and blue paper the rest was white also came with a sharpener and an eraser. Its. Such a good sketch book for on the go and has a small pouch to put your items in. I really do suggest doing a review. Cause this kit is awesome!

As someone that mixes a lot of colours while drawing they are wonderful, though I do recommend paper with a fairly smooth texture; grey or brown toned paper too if you want to best results. I actually do recommend to start out with these, since they forced me to learn more about colours and what works and not. when Blending with colored pencils, you need to stroke in different direction with ur first layer of color, just like what you did at 2:41, the color red was in vertical strokes, the blue should be in horizontal stokes. with that you'll avoid "streaky" results and it will blend well. that goes for any brand of colored pencils cheap or not. :)

    Just in case some of you are looking for someone's experience who owns the big sets of both pencil brands:
    After falling in love with Polychromos I bought the 120 set, and I own the 150 prismacolor set. I prefer the prismas over the polychromos tbh, though the polychromos are amazing. I just like the smoothness of the prismas a bit better than the hard leads of the FC pencils when I'm drawing for hours.
    Also I think the prismacolor color range is the greatest, it's so satisfying to see those colors arranged perfectly whenever I open the box, just a perfect color spectrum. especially the variety of both brighter and darker colors in the set is incredible imo, whereas the Polychromos mostly have bright/vibrant colors, just as you can see in this video.
    Instead of some useful shades of skin tones (unlike the 'light flesh' in the Polychromos set, or pig nose pink as I call it) or other more natural colors they have like 5 yellows, 5 oranges, 5 reds and some blues and greens that are all so vibrant and bright they look almost identical. There are too many colors I don't necessarily need as you can get exactly the same shade of that color with lighter pressure of a darker color, and even with the same pressure some of them look almost identical. On the other hand I miss some more natural colors such as a salmon pink or the peach tones you get with the prismacolor set. Regarding the high price of the polychromos, I am kinda unsatisfied with their color range.
    (Yes I know, you can blend nearly every color with that number of pencils. But as you can see it takes more time and effort to blend the Polychromos smoothly than it would take with the prismas.)
    Also, you simply cannot layer polychromos white over other layers of color, the polychromos white is almost transparent, sadly. That's disappointing when you bought such an expensive pencil. The prismacolor white is 1000 times better!
    Anyway, the polychromos are better for fine details.
    Yet I wouldn't buy this set again, I'd rather buy a few colors I actually need.
    This is just my personal experience. the Polychromos are really good pencils, just not for my taste.
    I hope I could help if some of you maybe couldn't decide what pencil brand to spend their money on.

      Philip Norris Yes, I use the luminance white all the time it's the best of all. But 2nd best is the prismacolor white imo, I haven't tried that derwent one though. just wanted to compare prismas to polychromos :)

      Yeah but prisma is more easy to use than faber castell in my opinion and the blend is so soft, faber is good for detailing but not blending u will need a long time to easily using faber castell, i actually prefer prisma because it's easy to learn and blend but hey! faber is awesome and people has their own style and opinion

      @@ohok459 I learned to blend with Polys and I don't find it difficult at all? It works just as well, just not the way you are used to. If you had used Polys first, maybe you'd find them easier than Prismas. Personally I'll take my sturdy, long lasting, made in Germany Polychromos (I never had one break) and let you have your made in Mexico, constant quality control issues Prismas.

    A coworker of my dad just had them and never used them, so I got them somehow, because it was known that I draw a lot.
    I love the pencils and they hold up great. They don’t break if you sharpen them. I always compared my other pencils to them but years later i found out how freaking expensive they are...

    5:04 Polychromos have a small coating when first used that makes them ruff and patchy with the first few strokes, after that the colours resume their smooth fine texture. There is more info on their website.

    2:34 colours dont blend well, 4:00 noticing a deeper colour as you press harder, 5:02 insane smoothing. im guessing you didnt give enough white / green for the pencil to blend properly which causes the grainyness?

    Okay so I am someone who is getting back to color pencils and who has retained some knowledge of using color pencils before. My question is, if I'm getting back to colour pencils, would this be better than the prismacolors, the way I am? Or should I stick to prismacolors. I also want to use watercolours and a smooth gradation with a good set of darks and lights with the gradation.
