As a Dutchie, I audibly squeaked when you pulled out the Old Holland! The reason the paint is made in such small batches is because they still use the old processing methods from the Golden age of the Dutch masters, so you'd be painting with a very pure recipe like what Rembrandt and Vermeer would have used. They also have oil paints! If anyone ever comes across it, I highly recommend the Golden Barok Red watercolor from Old Holland. It's the most gorgeous single-pigment, characteristic rust colour that's just absolutely magical on paper!
I will never get over the discontinuation of dandelion. That is still the best yellow color. I am waiting for them to bring it back. We're all waiting for them to bring it back...
Been watching for a couple years now and am I the only one who's felt like Rae now does alot of repeat stuff? This isn't meant as criticism and I'm sorry if it comes across this way but the past four thumbnails and titles and video concepts have all been INCREDIBLY similar. And in comparison to a year ago where there was alot more variety (stuff like art hacks, product reviews, art challenges, and experimenting with different styles). It's a shame cause I used to love the videos but now I feel like I've already seen it cause of how similar it was to the previous one. Again I love you Rae and adore the channel it's just an observation. Like i would adore just a simple voice over video of Raes painting/drawing process and just a draw with me. Id adore it.
I have also noticed it over the years. I miss the variety in videos. These videos now just seem to appeal to "tiktok" audiences or very quick and easy to digest. I miss a lot of her bigger projects she would do. Everything just seems like the same stuff over and over "Most expensive", "Rarest", "cheapest".
Her early stuff is great, but the past year has been very cookie cutter. I miss just watching her make art. Also I feel like some of the products she recommends are more for the commission.
Also my state too! 🩷 was shocked, it is wonderful that they are cleaning the environment. The whole process is amazing. I appreciate how people are cleaning my state’s environment. This is such a cool way to recycle litter. If this has a fundraiser I am definitely donating to this.
I paint with Chinese and Japanese brushes. You’re supposed to bloom the tip slightly with water to remove the adhesive that holds the hair together. Ideally, you would have more than one brush. A newer brush is used to create fine lines because most of the adhesive is still in the hairs. Older brushes with less adhesive are used for washes and larger surfaces.
You'll need to wash the brush before you can get more movement out of it. It's not actually meant to be stiff when in use, that's the glue used to help form it. 😊
Yes!! OMG that was so frustrating to watch and her comparison was off because she should have compared a top quality watercolour brush to it. She really has zero clue when it comes to watercolour.
Random art variety idea after seeing the comment about videos being a bit too similar, maybe an outdoor art video? Just to really shake up the scenery, lighting, and art topic? And if I remember you live around the US southwest which can be so fun to do art in if you still live there!

What an interesting watch! Would love to see you doing traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting techniques! And I don't know if you plan to hoard this as an heirloom (totally valid) or not, but if you make more stuff with these supplies, would love to see them. Would also love to see an update video (if you do plan to use them and not preserve them) to see if your opinion or how you use them changes with experience.

There's another similar thing that Gamblin does, and you'll want to check into it if you are so inclined, and it definitely fits the standards for rarity. Their paintmaking shop has Torit air filtration systems to keep stray pigment out of the air, and once each year take the collected pigment from the filters and make one single run of a gray oil paint made from that collected pigment. They call it Torrit (with two r's) Grey and since the mix of pigments will never be quite the same from year to year, no two tubes of Torrit Grey from subsequent years will ever be quite the same. So it's seasonal (which is on-brand for us in the Paciic Northwest), limited supply, and unique. They have had local store promotions where your retailer would give out a single tube for free if you knew how to ask and then each year they'd have a contest where people would do monochrome paintings off this year's batch.. I don't know if they do those anymore but they still offer Torrit Grey each year because that's how Gamblin rolls, and you should really check this out if you haven't yet.
That's interesting. Schmincke started doing a similar thing: they collect pigments left over from their pastel making process and make a "Random Grey" colour. Every year they put those pigments in a different medium: pastel, oil or watercolour. Neat to know other makers do this too!

I watched all of these documentaries long ago, so seeing you talk about these is so cool. Also, the fact that those paints were shipped and made in Portland, OR (where Im from) is so ob brand 😂
I saw that documentary about Japanese art supplies, I only can wish to have that last brush, but I also fear I would not be good enough to appreciate the quality. Getting a quality ink stick is still on my wish list as well.
I have that inkstone! My aunt brought it for me from China in the 1980, I had no idea it was so rare. The stamp is not there anymore since I have used it but the box it came in is soooo pretty and still as good as new
I’ll admit I had some contempt for a brush that would cost so much, but when you mentioned it’s used for calligraphy I realized that brushes like that are probably used for important documents like when Japan’s imperial princes and princesses are born or with royal marriages. Using a super fancy brush like that makes sense.
Cold fact: The Chinese also used the ink and the brushes(not as high quality it was a long time ago) it was used for writing fancy letters(shu fa ), currently, they still do shu fa but with a more modern ink.
I worked at an AMD site 10ish years ago, and am so looking forward to the oil paints! (Even if the remediation attempt is basically negligible.) Thanks for bringing them to my attention!
I love your videos and I saw a video saying there's less variety but I absolutely love it... It's like I love you for what you've posted and I continue to love you because these videos are right up my alley
I accidentally got the watercolor version of the fourth item, and it is now my go to set for almost anything! The colors are so rich and vibrant, and there's such a range of tone and depth to them that you could easily paint almost anything. They feel a little heavier than other watercolors, but it feels like a benefit too.
Would have loved to see the watercolor on 100% cotton cold press with various washes. These looked like super opaque, with which watercolor you want more of transparency.
Dear everyone: there is a chance she is choosing to do certain videos because THOSE are the type of videos the algorithm is currently promoting. I love the videos either way, art youtube is my comfort zone.
The law of diminishing returns has to apply at some point. There has to be a point where putting more work into a product like a paint brush isn't going to make it better as much as more expensive.
Ok I gotta ask, did you get every item for this video and the idea for the video from the “so expensive” art supply video from insider? Cuz a few of these products were legit in the same damn video from insider
Old Holland watercolour paints are very easy to get a hold of there on Jacksons art. Is someone who really enjoys Watercolor there are far rare ones out there, but it’s not a brand. It’s a pigment that would be rare.
It may be repetitive but I think she is super passionate about art history. I don’t everything out there is for views. I know if I’m passionate about something I’d share it as much as I cann

11:40 the painting was amazing!❤
Loved the concept of this video so much! Was so great! 💗
Thats cool bro😊
When did this channel go from art to reviewing products...i miss the old content that taught me and many more a lot
Huh, you're right-nothing but reviews for the last 4 vids, one challenge, 2 information vids, 9 more reviews-yeah, maybe more info vids would be good.
Purely coincidence that we’re moving the same week! Hoping your move goes smoothly! ❤
I'm always so happy when you give additional info about how these things get made!
Great Video. That brush is amazing. Thanks for purchasing one so we could see it🤩
Love that drawing! Such cool supplies shown too.
I accidentally got the watercolor version of the fourth item, and it is now my go to set for almost anything! The colors are so rich and vibrant, and there's such a range of tone and depth to them that you could easily paint almost anything. They feel a little heavier than other watercolors, but it feels like a benefit too.
That Iron Violet color is exactly a color I've been trying to find forever! I need to buy that paint set ASAP
I watched a documentary about the brush makers. The technique and the time it takes to create those brushes is just amazing
Would have loved to see the watercolor on 100% cotton cold press with various washes. These looked like super opaque, with which watercolor you want more of transparency.
Baumgartner Restoration just featured Gamblin on his channel! Great behind the scenes!
You gotta love the fact that humans not only make art, but make an art out of making things to make art with.
I have seen t hos einsider videos so I was SOOOO excited to see someone actually using them who is more relatable haha
I love this kind of content so so much!😍😍
Beautiful 😍 thank you
i see you've been bingeing the insider docs about expensive art supplies as well loved this video
PURPLE MOUNTAINS' MAJESTY MENTIONED 🔥🔥🔥
Those products look fascinating. Definitely adding a couple to my birthday list! 🤣
That ink stick looks gorgeous. Beautifully dense.
11:38 FINALLY she made SOMETHING that i CAN MAKE TOO🤌🏽🤧✨
Dear everyone: there is a chance she is choosing to do certain videos because THOSE are the type of videos the algorithm is currently promoting.
I love the videos either way, art youtube is my comfort zone.
I don't know how you already got my vibe by just watching 2 of your videos but I like it, keep it up :3(also new subscriber..)
The law of diminishing returns has to apply at some point. There has to be a point where putting more work into a product like a paint brush isn't going to make it better as much as more expensive.
Nice! I hope you get to finally draw on your walls in your new home lol
I just have a question,, what do you do with all the art supplies that you use in your videos?
the fact that I watched all of the insider videos before this video so I was so hyped to see the products
