    In my opinion when you're hunting with a front stuffer, every shot is a clean bore shot. When I'm sighting in, or target shooting I run a wet patch down the bore, concentrate on the crud ring they all seem to leave behind, followed by another wet patch and then a couple of dry patches to dry things out. Try that sometime and see if your groups don't tighten up a bunch. SST's shoot great in all three of my CVA rifles with this method.

    • @suburbanhunt3653
      @suburbanhunt3653  11 месяцев назад +1

      There is truth to that. I can only think of one time I reloaded after shooting and actually making another shot at a deer. The video for this coming Wednesday I tested making two shots and running a bore snake twice through the barrel. And with certain powders it made a HUGE difference. Also when I’m adjusting my scope to a combo I do clean the barrel between each shot to ensure the first round impact is at point of aim. Thank you for watching and commenting.

    Your testing adds up with what I’ve found over the years. I will not shoot sabot bullets, they are to inconsistent and the grouping sucks. They may work for some people but me. To much plastic making contact with the riflings and once the sabot separates from the projectile the bullet is practically tumbling.

    I love the Hornady 250 gr. SST's in my CVA Wolf. I get 1 1/2 inch groups in my rifle with 100 gr. (2 pellets) of Pyrodex. I tried 3 pellets, but they would not group very well at all in my rifle. I have taken 2 deer with this combination.

      @patchitwood7428 11 месяцев назад

      I have not tried the 300 gr. I got suitable groups in the 250's a couple of years ago when powder/pellets and primers were harder to get, so I did not do a ton of testing once I got "good enough" groups in what I had on hand. If I were to change projectiles, it would probably be to either Hornady 290 FTX or 340 ELDX. @@suburbanhunt3653

    Hey DJ. Another great video. I finally got out with my Optima this weekend. Used only 2 pellet white hot loads with 245 sst. I tried doing 3 shots then clean but my group's were everywhere almost always due to the 3rd shot. And that third load was very tight due to the crud ring. When i went to one shot or two shots then clean my groups finally stayed tight. Also had to run the o ring in the primer pocket due to blow by.
    I'll be trying out the eldx and bore drivers this weekend but with blackhorn. I also don't want to have clean every other shot. I know the blackhorn would be very expensive for your testing but would probably be best for you to run on the hunt due to it's consistency over multiple shots without cleaning.

    • @suburbanhunt3653
      @suburbanhunt3653  11 месяцев назад +1

      From the comments it seems that multiple shooters have the same wild 3rd shot. I’m going to run loose powder for my loads but will continue to test with pellets for those that run pellets.
      Test with BH209 will get expensive but if we don’t test we won’t know. As for cleaning a bore snake is enough to clean the barrel. Easy enough to do in the stand if needed. Thanks for watching

    Hey brotha forgot to let you know my results. Came up with my gun hates pellets I can not hit consistently with them. Blackhorn on the other hand is way better. The federal borlocks just suck in general which really sucks I really like the idea of that bullet. The boredrivers eld x did okay for me had to downcharge the powder charge it was over pressurizing for me and primer was getting stuck and imprinting the firing pin plate on it. The best groups I had were with the Barnes tez 250 grain one right on top of the other and one flyer. Not sure if it was me the gun or the bullet. I bought the loading jag for those bullets to see if that helps also got the 290 grain bullet to see if it does good. My hunt starts Saturday hopefully it’s successful

      First of all, thank you for the update, and good luck this weekend. I am right there with you on the federal bore locks. Really wish they performed better. As for the group with the 250 grain as you can see in this video, the 1,2 with a flyer is getting to be more prominent. In the next video, I will be working on overcoming that. O.K., D.J. Here we go. 95% of this is MHO and food for thought. I have never weighed 2 pellets that were the same weight. The more pellets you add to a charge, the more the weight variation comes into play. Pellets consist of controlled explosive material and a BINDER. Binders come into play during ignition. I do not think, with the igniters we have, primarily the 209, that we will ever reach acceptable, repeatable ignition with more than 3 pellets of any kind, and even 3 can be a struggle That is why I don't use them. I wish I could, but I can't accept the accuracy I get with pellets (any, and all, with White Hots edging out all others in my gun) vs. what I get with carefully weighed charges. That's enough for now. Keep up the good work! P.S. Your gun exhibits what I call the 2 and 1 syndrome. You might want to look at the bedding of the forend. Best.

    • @suburbanhunt3653
      @suburbanhunt3653  11 месяцев назад

      Bedding on a muzzleloader? Interesting thought honestly never crossed my mind til this moment. Thank you! I agree 100% with everything you said. The reason I continue the pellets is that I assume more people are going to use them rather then loose. I’m 1000% on the accuracy comment!!! Next weeks video I weight out the pellets for the same weight charge…. It’s show the other side of weighed charges. 1 grain make a big difference and how do you get consistent weights…ie how many pellets would you go through to get the same 90grain by weight out of your pellets? It just doesn’t make sense to use them. Unless you are ok with groups they provide. Thank you for watching and commenting. What’s your go to load?

      I agree with everything you've said. I get poked fun for carefully weighing my Blackhorn 209. Are T7 pellets acceptable to harvest whitetail ethically at 150 yards? Absolutely! But if I can make my groups tighter, shoot flatter, and not have the woes of cleaning associated with T7....I'm all in. In my CVA Optima I get great groups with the SST 300 grain. I had horrible accuracy with the Powerbelts. Just shows each rifle is an individual. Also, in a muzzleloader, I wonder if 3 shot groups are really a good metric. I hunt with my gun but never have taken a second shot, but really the 2 shot performance would be more important than the three shot group, IMO.

      I hope they started making the SST projectiles softer than they were 10 years ago. A few of my hunting buddies and I all used either the SSTs or the Shockwaves. Most of us used a 2 pellet load. The only one of us who actually had proper expansion out of these bullets was using 3 pellets. All of us who used 100gr (2 pellets) had zero expansion and usually long tracking jobs.
      This is not an assumption based solely upon exit holes or terminal performance as we had recovered multiple projectiles over the years. All of the recovered projectiles either remained perfectly intact, with the tip slightly blunted or the nose of the bullet would shear off. None of the bullets actually expanded beyond the original bullet diameter.

    Try varying your Sabots with projectiles and powders that you are getting flyers. A ribbed sabot like a Harvester may make a difference in the 3rd shot. Also, you can try slightly thinner Sabots, again Harvester makes them in different thicknesses. You may get a more consistent 3-shot group, although they might not all be touching, you may eliminate the flyer. I have experimented with this on my Knight disc Extreme .50 cal. And the sabot style and thickness really makes a difference in group sizing. Also, measure the diameter of the bore on your gun and then measure the diameter of the projectile sabots because the fouling may in fact be getting too tight for the combination you are using.

    • @suburbanhunt3653
      @suburbanhunt3653  10 месяцев назад

      That would explain a lot. I just tested Thor projectiles that were given to me. Not realizing that you have to size your barrel I shot them. They were very tight and had the flier issue on pretty much every groups. Thank for the comment I will have to look into that. Thanks for watching

      @vtexcrsn 10 месяцев назад

      @@suburbanhunt3653 The other thing you can try to is, shooting the same setup, but shooting a 4th and 5th shot. Pay attention to the effort required to load the projectile and see where the shots are placed. If it is a fouling issue then those two shots should also be flyers. We know shot placement is number 1 in a hunting situation, but I would rather have a setup where I have 3 to 5 shots that are consistent, without cleaning, rather than 2 great shots, and the rest are flyers. This would be important on a long wilderness-style hunting trip where you are not afforded the opportunity to clean in the field. It just all depends on the hunting situation really.
