  • We continue through our muzzleloader series. In this video we finally get to the Triple 7 Fire Stars. We are comparing the consistency of each of the powders. The major key to accuracy is repeatability...So which one will help you the most? Thats Find Out Together.

    Great video. Thanks for taking that beating for us.
    I have an 870 Supermag and I bought a couple boxes of those 3.5s a while back. After firing some 3" 2oz nitros I decided to just pass on the 3.5s.

      Thank you. Those 3.5 are a beast for sure. I used the Nitros for my 2024 Opening Day turkey hunt and I missed. Partly due to the new sights I had on the shotgun and mostly because I let me nerves get the better of me. My point is I tested the 3" nitros at 40 yards and the target was covered in pellets. It would have to be a rather long shot for me to want to use 3.5" shells. Thanks for watching

    I’ve been shooting hornady bore driver FTX 290gr bullets with 100gr of the pyrodex, so far it’s been pretty consistent for me. However, the white hots impressed me too I’m going to try them out next time I go to the gun range.

      I have had success with the 290gr FTX as well. I'm running 80gr Black Horn 209 mostly. I'm curious to know your results when you go. The White Hots seem easier to clean but Pyrodex is cheaper and, in a lot of my test, just as accurate. Thanks for watching.

    As I said before I recently went to 150g as the accuracy was way better. But I went back to 777 from using Whitehots. The accuracy of the 777 was just flat out consistent. Whitehot wasn't at all. It is cleaner but to drop deer I need that consistency in my head when I'm in my blind. So I'll deal with the 7 crud ring lol

    • @suburbanhunt3653

      That makes complete sense. That ring is easy enough to clean out. If I had your situation I would make the same choice.

      I just ran into this! I don’t understand the Whitehots consistent FPS being good but terrible accuracy. 🤷‍♂️ I thought about plopping 1 Whitehot and 1- 777 to see what it would do. In hopes to keep the dirty away from the breech plug.

    I've shot quite a few of the Firestar pellets, because that's what's most available in my area. Usually with the normal load of three pellets. I have three inlines, all magnum rated, and I have shot four a few times. With the recoil I got out of four, I can't even imagine shooting five of them. I do seem to get good velocity and accuracy with them out of my guns though. I've mostly shot the 250gr. Hornaday SSTs, but they seemed to perform well with other bullets also.

      That’s awesome. With what I saw the Firestars appear to be a solid choice. I look forward to seeing the accuracy. Thank you for watching.

    To add to the confusion is this problem with the crud ring that forms with seemingly all of the pellets. A lot of people say that some of this is due to the use of standard 209 primers. The claim is that they are too powerful and actually push the load down the barrel slightly before it is detonated. I recently did find the 209 primers made just for muzzleloading inline rifles that are supposed to not be so hot as to cause this problem but are yet to test them to see if there really is any improvement. I did get some of that with the Firestar pellets but didn't seem quite as bad as with some of the other pellets I've used. It's not a real big problem if you keep up with it and swab the barrel out between every few shots but still happens. Problem with that is that you think you have the bullet seated fully when you hit the crud ring and you actually don't. You do not want air space between bullet and charge period. This can cause problems and an unsafe condition.

      I have some Triple 7 primers that I plan to test. But for now I going to stick with the 209 for consistency in testing. But I have heard that and the opposite. I have heard that the lighter primers fail to ignite. This is the main reason I want to wait and put them on their own video.

    • @ditchdigger93

      @@suburbanhunt3653 I hear they don't ignite that Blackhorn 209, but haven't heard anything about failing with regular powder.

      @@suburbanhunt3653 thats what I'm talking about. I've been told some primers are hotter than others and better to ignite pellets and a difference in consistency. Just wondering, looking forward to your videos.

    Not picking on you, but if you do this test again, maybe try a non power belt sabot. I wonder how well the skirts seal, and might be getting some blow by on the power belts, they do seem to fit some guns pretty loose. Since they don't fit tight(depending on bore), it would make sense you would see more deviations on lower charges not expanding the base til a little farther down barrel. Interesting tests, was planning or trying the fire stars, one of the next times I get out. Will be doing some tests myself. One thing you might find interesting is, harvester makes a 50 cal sabot, for 40 cal bullets. Check out the Fury .400 tipped bullet. Could be a interesting combo.

    • @suburbanhunt3653
      @suburbanhunt3653  7 месяцев назад

      You are not the first to mention those. May be worth checking out. Also you aren’t picking… I was just using what I had and learning as I went. As for the seal I can see your point. Might be worth redoing with a different projectile. I’m learning a lot and love tips and tricks for others. Some fall short and others prove true. Honestly I love putting them to the test. Thank you for watching and for commenting.

      I'm kind of on a quest for a better performing bullet. Been using the 240 XTP, and majority of deer have been recovered, but sometimes I lose one, with what should be a good hit. I think the bullets are exploding on impact, and not penetrating on close shots. I picked up some different bullets to try, even some hard cast to put in sabot. My T/C grouped the 240 .430 xtp pretty well, that is why I stuck with it for so long, plus it was cheap to buy them in bulk. Always like to keep cost down when can. I got a old box of interlock 265 Hornady .430 that looks like It would be a good combo, but if it works sadly discontinued. They still do a 265 FTX, I'm also going to try, and also a 300 XTP. I find it odd they have not offered a XTP mag for the 44 cals, but they do it for the 45 cal bullets. It would probably hold together better if they did. So if can get 44 cals to do What I want, I may go to the 45 xtp mag, if I can find a good sabot. The black ones that used to come with the 45 cal XTP were usually harder to load, so maybe a harvester crush rib would be better for the sabot. I will say when looking at the bullets, and putting them in the harvester green crush rib, they look to fit better than the regular green sabot Hornady uses. May not matter, as they grouped ok with the old, but just a observation. Not sure what BH209 is going for where your at but sheesh $$$@@suburbanhunt3653

    I have a question if im shooting one
    Grain of powder like a 100 grain and i switch to 150 do i have to sight in my muzzleloader again since im switching grains of black powder to a higher grain

    • @suburbanhunt3653
      @suburbanhunt3653  7 месяцев назад +1

      That would depend on the difference in the point of aim - point of impact of whatever round your shooting. We just did a video with the XPT Hornady rounds. We’re going from 100 grains to 150 grains raise the impact over 6 inches. But yes, most likely when you increase the amount of powder you will raise the impact point therefore, you will need to recite your scope.
