I’ve always separated this song into three stages..1st is the “need” to get their fix..middle solo is the high itself..and the third is the comedown and regret.

The melodic break is a big part of the meaning of the song. It's representing high felt when you first take your drug of choice. Then it moves into the stages of coming down and needing more. Metallica always tells a big part of their stories through their instruments, not just their lyrics.

    • @Rainbow-yh6ov

Absolutely!! That is EXACTLY what the musical interlude is about. The “puppet” is zoned out stoned as hell, but the more you do, the more you need, and at some point you may bottom out and realize you’re being controlled. They are so BRILLIANT!!!

In my mind the melodic instrumental break is the moment of clarity during sobriety, and it gets heavy and nasty as the addict falls into relapse

    • @jaybird455
      @jaybird455 3 года назад +27

Quite the opposite my friend. The song is broken into 3 parts instrumentally. The melodic part is the actual high. The euphoric feeling you get when using the drug. The beginning starts heavy and insane, simulating the desire and need for the drug. The end simulates once the drug has worn off and the insanity begins again. It’s quite brilliant how this was constructed.

    • @TheCabIe

@@jaybird455 The transition at 9:05 always gets me, that moment when euphoria starts wearing off, you can feel the anxiety building up and then you have to face reality again. It is important to realize that Metal songs, and Metal as a whole is a Journey, so when you hear solos they imply time moving forward, and a split in the story that is being told. Not always to be sure, sometimes they are done simply as a way to give other members of a given band a time to shine, or to give the singer a break. This is why some of the best Rock and Metal songs tend to be longer than other kinds of songs.
Studio versions though tend to be the best versions, hearing a band live is important to understanding a band, and Metallica is one of the best live bands there ever was, but their studio versions are the most pure when it comes to the music itself.

The studio version from the original album is the best version to listen to, but it is definitely a masterpiece of musical storytelling. Not only do the lyrics tell the story of addiction with painful accuracy, the music itself tells the story. Brilliant. One of many great songs from this band.
You should definitely check out One, the original first, then the video, because it's hard to follow everything that is going on with the video if you haven't heard the song.

Yes but if everything is aggressive...how do you know whats agressive? It becomes normal. Like if everything you ate tasted sweet...sweet wouldnt be sweet...it would be normal.
The breaks and the melodies allow the song to breath and gives those harder more aggressive moments more impact because of the contrast. And vise versa,

It`s melodic metal with growls and screams but they using, besides drums and guitares, a lot more kinds of instruments, like violin, bagpipe, piano, flute, harp, jaw harp...nearly everything you can image. It`s aggressiv and powerfull but also extremly beautiful.

Ok so these guys are the legit LEGENDS at change ups and breakdowns, tempo will change, riff will change over all feel will change and it come outta nowhere and always epic now in this song or this albumn rather this is an entire Master Piece, there are so many intriguing hints and easter eggs and methoticall facts in this albumn its literally a master piece, like the fact ALL songs on are like this in the sense the music plays to the emotion or feeling of the topic, it was crazy and fast and hit hard like a drug and it last a good while, the interlude where it got soft was a person coming down from the drug, the build up again, anticipation and withdrawl setting in for another hit, then screams FIX ME and BAM hits lime a train solo like a 2nd hit but bigger then send you crazy, and then before long as your life is ending and out of season the Master of puppets, id laughing at you cuz he now co trols you, hes now ruined your life and killing you and ending your life, they have a newer addiction ssong of the newset albumn called Moth i to Flames, the addiction of fame and fortune which James is not he wrote that song to keep himself humble, and he is all about the fans and making them a family, hell say weather you been a fan since the begging or a fan yesterday, your family, Also HATE this era cuz he was on the verge of loosing his voice, and had to slow down and take voice lessons cuz he was straining it so hard Dr. Said if he doesnt do something soon he will loose his voice forever and wont be able to sing

Master of Puppets was released in 1986, so it definitely relates to hardcore drugs, not social media. James said in an interview that the "master" could literally be anything that is controlling someone and that they're addicted to, not necessarily drugs.

Any mention about syllable count? Metallica lyrics are often syllabic poetry (number of syllables have structure and often repeat in certain verses/stanzas, and also stanzaic with count and repetition ).
    (from first verse)
"Veins that pump with fear" - 5
    "Sucking darkness clear" - 5
    "Leading on your death's construction" - 8
    (from second verse)
    Needlework the way" - 5
    "Never you betray" - 5
"Life of death becoming clearer" - 8
    (from third verse)
    "Never ending maze" - 5
"Drift on numbered days" - 5
"Now your life is out of season" - 8
    From bridge (pre-chorus)
"Taste me you will see" - 5
"More is all you need" - 5
    "Dedicated to" - 5
    "How I'm killing you" - 5
etc... Blackened and so many other of Metallica's older albums display a little more structure than current/recent ones. They deviate more often now (as any artist evolves and changes as they see fit). Just another note about the amount of effort Metallica imbued art into metal.

When I hear you talk about drummers, makes me want to recommend some SMASHING PUMPKINS songs… songs off of “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” and “Siamese Dream “ are amazing.
Considered alternative rock when it first came out, related to grunge but the group is from Chicago.
The drummer, Jimmy Chamberlain, is amazing. Billy Corgan is lead singer/songwriter … and the band had tons of dysfunction.
For example, their second album, “Siamese Dream”, is the album that blew them up. Had the songs “Today” and “Disarm” we’re the hits and the next 4 years, from 93-97 they were pretty big.
It’s later found out that Billy Corgan was so dissatisfied with how the bassist (D’Arcy) and other lead guitarist (James Iha)(who later also joined A PERFECT CIRCLE for a while), had played on the album that he re-recorded 90% of THEIR parts and THATS the album that blew them up.
Some group therapy, and their next album (the double album MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS 1995) , the band was in a better place and everyone played their own instruments, but Billy still wrote almost all of it again.
Then while touring their double album in 1996, their touring keyboardist ODed from heroin while on a heroin binge with the drummer (drummer had heroin issues for many many years himself.. he literally disappeared in Chicago while recording SIAMESE DREAM while on a heroin bender. Billy Corgan went to a Chicago radio station to basically put out an APB for anyone who had seen their summer. To let him know they were looking for him and needed him to finish the album lol I mean, he’s a REALLY good drummer.
So in the middle of that 96 tour, The drummer was kicked out of the band…. And the band changed drastically. Fascinating stuff to watch the ebbs and flow of that band.
Billy Corgan once said that he didn’t really see that many Smashing Pumpkin cover bands anywhere… and that’s because they play tough musical copy. Pretty unique. Billy called the band “a beautiful train wreck that no one wants to copy” lol
Songs I would want you to hear (most have official videos which are great, and you should always have their lyrics pulled up on the side. His voice is the most unique out of everyone you’ve had so far) :
    1 - Rocket 🚀 (official video)
2 - Geek USA 🇺🇸 (official video OR “Live Clowns 🤡 version)
    3 - Mayonnaise (album version)
4 - Tonite Tonite (official music video)

6 - Bullet with Butterfly Wings (official music video)
7 - An Ode to No One (album version OR live farewell concert)(Jimmy goes t rehab and rejoins the band as they break up in 2002? 🤔)
8 - Thirty Three (official music video)
    9 - 1979 (official music video)
10 - Perfect (official music video.. and this video is a continuation of 1979)
11 - X.Y.U. (Album version OR farewell show version)
    12 - Pug (music video)

You do some of my favorite reactions. They are intelligent and well thought out in most cases. I love how you really break everything down and pay special attention to the lyrics. I remember when everyone was up in arms about War Pigs by Black Sabbath, referring to it as devil worship, when in actually it was and is one of the greatest war protest songs in my memory.
Also in reference to the slower parts with less aggression, that's a large part of drug addiction. There are highs and lows. It's very representative of the addiction. It has its place most definitely, especially in s song like this
I would also have to agree with some of the other people commenting, you should seriously listen to the studio version. There is so much that is lost in the live version. That's not to say that it's bad but you miss out on so much of the nuances of their musical talent
