When it gets loud and heavy at the end, that's are his memories about beeing on the battlefield. The drums fire heavy shots, it's loud and noisy and chaotic and fast ... rushing in pain, fear and speed until it's over! So the instrumental part has a deep meaning, too! Listen to the last section again and imagine some chaoitc pictures on the war scene!

Did you notice anything about the drumming in this song? At some point, you hear Lars fire off 3 short, three long, and then three short salvos in rapid succession, spelling out "S.O.S." in Morse code.
The soldier in this song is basically signaling that he wants to be put out of his misery, because he has nothing more to live for due to his horrific injuries and is only kept alive by life support. The official music video (which takes clips from the movie Johnny's Got His Gun) shows the man tapping his head against his bed post, because it's the only way he can still communicate.

This song is based on a book and a follow up movie called “Johnny Got His Gun”. It is about a WW 1 vet who is literally shredded by a mortar that landed by him. It ripped his face off making him; mute, deaf and blind. The rest of his body is so heavily damaged that he loses both arms and both legs. He is quite literally locked into himself unable to communicate or interact with the outside world and unable to move at all. The ultimate isolation.

Edit: On the aside, we would of never heard of Metallica had they not been so aggressive in their promotion. They literally started by word of mouth. They sold their album (ride the lightening) mostly at their concerts. One was on their 3rd album and I do believe their first 'video' because MTV, though very popular at the time, refused to play their music sighting them as being too controversial aka too metal. Only when their popularity with the public could no longer be denied did MTV conceded and start playing their stuff and even then it was regulated to after midnight rotation. To see them at the Grammy's was ground breaking for my generation.

The song itself is nearly a direct musical representation of the 1971 Anti War film Johnny Got His Gun. The music video and the studio track even takes snippets of the film's dialogue. The film is about a soldier getting injured so severely, as he lay in bed in the hospital, the nurses think they are in a coma but he's conscious the entire time but can't move, talk, or communicate in any way. It's a very dark movie, I'd even classify it as a horror movie.

At the time metal wasn't accepted like it is today. Watching this I can see how James was like nervous or something, but he wasn't 100% until the climax of the song... it was awesome.
    Thanks for the reaction, bro.

this is one of those song that tells a story not only with the lyrics, but also with the music. THIS SONG YOU NEED TO DO THE BAND RELEASE VIDEO(full length, it is pretty long), sit and do a straight through listen, then react they way you normally do to the video, with the movie scenes cut in. I PROMISE ITS A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL OF BAD ASSERY. And like Pantera says...A NEW LEVEL...

Justice 4 all was one of my first CDs. I was maybe 13. Listened to it all summer on my $450 portable Panasonic CD player. I mowed a lot of yards for that.. one of my favorite songs.

The original vid for this song, from that movie. My soul screams when watching that accompanied with their music. I refused watching it after first time back then, but a few did reactions to it so now it's in my inner eye again. Metallica knows how to get to you. Love them. And great reaction, hugs.

Did you catch the part part where the guitar spells out SOS in Morse code? And then the drums take over the Morse code. There’s so much here. Definitely check out the video. This was so relevant when I was a teenager first hearing this song and watching it on MTV over and over. With Metallica please check out the unforgiven video! You won’t be sorry. Just caught onto your reactions and enjoy them so much. Glad you ventured into this Metal rock Era.

Seeing them live was the best concert experience ever for me. So live is great but you get a different feeling listening to the studio versions.

The song was written about a WWI soldier that was thought to be in a coma but was actually conscious the whole time, paralyzed. Notice the drummer tapping out morse code SOS during the song.

Greatest thing about this performance was metal being introduced to prime time television. Also, I love “shit” slipping through.

The book and movie "Johnny Got His Gun" is absolutely the type of tale that nightmares become reality. This soldier jumps into his foxhole in WWI and a star shell explodes near him. All that he is is a living brain with the remains of a body (no limbs, face nothing). That's it. Yet he can still feel, and all he wants to do is die. I've read the book and watched the movie. It is truly the most powerful anti war story created.
