This song was written by James (lead singer) late at night when NO ONE was around (sort of like Mama Said) and was just him getting crap out of his head so he could get back to making the (Metallica/black) album. When the guys showed up to the studio in the morning they found him asleep and the lyrics written out in front of him as well as the guitar already done.. and they pretty much forced him into recording the song. They instantly knew it'd be a hit as well as good for him to get it out into the world and able to sing it whenever he wanted to. He was really nervous about showing his more vulnerable side to the world and how they'd react to a huge thrash metal band doing a song like that but by doing so it brought in more fans than they could've ever imagined and suddenly a band that NEVER got radio play was on every rock station around the world... and the rest is history.
Well that's what they said in VH1's Behind the Music but wikipedia said it was written while on tour while James was sick of being away from home.
Just found this video. The story I heard was he was in a hotel room on tour talking to his woman. Notice how the intro is all open notes. He had the guitar on his chest while talking on the phone and was idly plucking away. He then started messing around with it after he got off of the phone, and wanted it to be something just for himself, but the band burst into the room and, as you stated, pushed him into doing something with it.
I’ve seen interviews where it was about an ex girlfriend and James didn’t want to do it as a song but Lars insisted. I’m the interview they even laughed how it could be Interpreted in different ways to different people- which many of their songs can be in my opinion. James has a way of writing that leaves it open to the individual listening.
If your preference is hard Metallica I highly recommend checking out Blackened live in Seattle '89. Metallica in their prime was a force.
That whole show was their best and maybe one of the best live shows ever.
Anything from that concert will blow your mind. This is a great suggestion🤘🤘🤘🤘

@@JordanJMyers Jason's a good bass player. He's still around with other band, creating new music. Cliff is the greatest bassist, and got taken from us FAR too soon. Had Cliff not died, most ppl wouldn't even know who Jason is.
If you really want something to blow your mind, check out the original "S&M" concert albums -- 2 day concert with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra as accompaniment. This song in particular, with the strings, is just..... incredible.
Honestly , I prefer the S&M 2 version. Less auto tune and more from the heart.

This song (as well as this album) didn't go over too well with the "hardcore" fans at the time....but time proved that this is one Hell of an album.
I don't think people realized that there was so much more to Metallica than just hard metal. It caught a lot of people off-guard.
It opened the door for more people to become fans, people that didn’t really like the hardcore stuff could still enjoy Metallica’s music

Yeah, I think the S&M album is some of the most brilliantly arranged performances of all time. I doubt anyone will merge classical and metal sounds like that ever again.

S&M is like the world's best Greatest Hits album. Where a greatest hits can seem like a death knell on some artists' careers, this wasn't that. Especially with the juxtaposition of a symphony and a metal band.
This album came out right after I lost my grandmother, she was a definitely odd bird, and lived her way till the end. I still remember her saying "Do whatever makes you happy, everyone else be damned. Its not THIER life its yours, live it your way kiddo." This is BY FAR my favorite 'ballad' by Metallica, I also prefer their harder stuff, but I would LOVE for you to react to their Instrumental only songs, especially Orion (Master of Puppets) and The Call of Ktulu (Ride the Lightning) being my favorites. I would also recommend reacting to any of their S&M songs, Metallica + The San Francisco Symphony is just AMAZING!!! Great reaction, keep them coming!!
IMO, the guitar line of this is just as iconic as Stairway to Heaven.
Straight facts. I used to listen to both songs back to back in my Ipod gen 1 days back in 07. Got through some very tough times in High School.
@@toolhousemafia I think pretty much everybody got through tough times in high school with music. I have some particular memories of this, Offspring, NIN, Warren G, Tupac, Shania Twain, REM...I was eclectic.
This song is a great song. My granddaughter will actually hum this song until she falls asleep. When she was small she had a very hard time sleeping, Metallica in all forms kept her asleep. So much so her first photos were taken with a Metallica shirt and her parents also wearing Metallica. I was introduced many years ago by an awesome friend and have been a fan since. I have carried that fan onto my son and now my granddaughter. "Tallica"

When I got married, this was the song that my wife and I picked for our first dance as a married couple at our reception. I have been a metallica fan for many, many years and have had the privilege to meet them a few times. For anyone who has never heard them, if they actually exist, do yourself a favor and pick any of their songs and you will join our fan club.
It's about being alone and not fitting in with others, be yourself always!!

Fun Fact: The guitar Kirk Hammett is playing is Peter Green's 1959 Gibson Les Paul that he bought from the Gary Moore estate for a cool $2,000,000 USD... thats the same Les Paul from the song Albatross by Fleetwood Mac, and all the Gary Moore live footage you've seen him playing a Gibson Les Paul...

This sing is so beautiful. The band never wanted to add this to their album because of how slow it was. But the reviews from fans was it's a massive hit
This was the first song I learned to pay on the guitar. Before scales, before I knew any of the notes on the fretboard. I got the guitar tab, took it into my local music store, told the teacher I wanted to be able to play like this and she took me through everything including how to play every note of this song. After 1 year of lessons I was told I couldn't be taught anything more. 6 months later I became a guitar teacher.

Yeah, you’re right. They played this in my brother’s bestfriend funeral. The church was so full that they had to get chairs and speakers outside aswell.
It was a beautiful funeral and Metallica was his fave band, everyone sang a long and cried.
Lars in his own world as usual on drums, he's all over the place smh! Meanwhile James was really doing a damn god job of sticking to the recording, he played the solo the closest to the recording in at least 20yrs and it was awesome...such a gorgeous melodic solo as recorded.

@@MysticMonk2001 it's not that he can't, it's safer not to. Remember there are tons of other reactors that get away with the majority of their studio reactions, but they all hate to see a video be removed. It's his channel, while I wish he did more studio at times, ill just skip the ones that i feel aren't worth my personal investment. More power to him, I like his channel and wish him the best of success in how he wants to run it.
@@mjlovejoy yeah like you said though it’s safer not to, so makes more sense to always listen to live versions if he knows he will always be allowed rather than try with studio versions and have the video taken down, the song is the same song either way plus, I Only watch his vids because I like to see his views and breakdowns of the song not to listen to the song itself

The Four Horsemen is something you would probably enjoy, it’s from their first album and there’s so much raw energy I get pumped every time
The great thing about this song and music to me in general is that you can take things for what you will, this song means something different to two different people. For me it’s a grounding sound that reminds me to think about what’s really important in life. I walked to the apocalyptica version at my wedding 😬
This was the song my wife and I did our first dance to at our wedding reception.
Not one of their most technical and mind blowing solos, but I love it.

Ah...the last song at my wedding reception/party! It was so much fun to watch people dancing to it, and then when Kirk played his blistering solo, the floor slowly cleared out, and my bride and I cut loose until the last note. We've been living together blissfully ever since! ;p

I'll say it, Miley Cyrus did a great job of singing this song with Metallica on the Howard Stern show. James talks about how hesitant he was to bring this song to the band, "never opened myself this waay-heyay".

One thing I have ALWAYS LOVED about Metallica's music is the guitar music in them. They really move you, not only through lyrics but the tone of the music.
This is my favorite Metallica song, but The Black Album is all pretty amazing.
This song, done with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra is so awesome as mostly any music with full orchestration. Also they are a bit older so the singers voice is more mature. I believe it was used in "The Unforgiven" movie with Clint Eastwood if I am correct.
This song and this album opened my eyes and ears to Metallica. Some of my favorite now is not one song but 3 - Unforgiven I, II, III. Unforgiven I or only Unforgiven is from the same album as this song, later they made two more... Hard to explain in second language. I like the albums before this one more than the ones after but LOAD was rather good.
This is my favorite song. I want it played at my funeral.

Mr Boyd, Their albums over MANY years have depicted the loss of the their friends and family to war, Jame's battle with drugs the loss of Cliff Burton in a terrible accident. The near break up of the entire band. So from Whom the Bell tolls to Nothing else matters is a 30 year progression. Jame's the singer was burnt very badly and resulted to major depression and addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs. They fought through rejection of their fans and getting new fans and battling with their success. They were called Sell Outs. but they continue onward.
Mental that this is on the same album as enter sandman. It's such a brilliant song

I walked down the aisle to this song, it summed up the intense love we felt for each other. We also knew it couldn't last at the same intensity.

If given the opportunity I would actually have picked this as a possibility for the first dance at my wedding. To me, it's about the love between two people and how nothing else matters but the love they share for themselves & life. How they don't care about what others think or say or feel, they are going to do what they want and what makes them happy.

James wrote that song and never intended to use it ,the other band members heard it and wanted to use it .

That's really refreshing and fun to see rare versions of songs reacted most man. I love your channel due to that fact. Yeah there are better live versions for sure, but I love seeing the journey and them making great music after 40 years..
This song is both a love-song from the band to its fans, and a pronouncement of 'This is us, we're here. Get over it.' It was also written to be just a relaxing jam the band could knock around with to practice and play together without getting too worked up. You could just chill and jam to this for a few hours, right?
I remember when this first came out the hardcore fans was confused and for a very short second , disappointed . Metallica is my number one hard rock right next to Zepplin !

I think they've played this song so many times that now they just don't have the same amount of passion and intensity.
Then that is sad. If I went to their concert and got this, I would be really disappointed. At least tune up the guitar ffs.
