Starts with 1949 when he was born and goes through 1989 when he turned 40. He wrote this in response to a comment by Sean Lennon and a friend who said nothing happened during Billy’s life. It wasn’t as tough a time to live through. Billy is a huge history buff so this was right up his alley. This was also the only song to which he ever wrote the lyrics first. A very interesting song, but not his best musically. Dive into his catalog for an amazing eclectic catalog.
One of the most interesting songs backstory wise ever zero doubt
Didn't realize that. That is good to know. All I remember is when I went back and really learned the lyrics of the song early in my adult life, and then went back again shortly after and researched each topic. Children of Thalidomide (sp) was probably the most surprising.
Thank you, I had no idea, I just always liked the song
Thanks for this info. Now I understand a lot more. I thought he was younger than I, but I find out he was born two years before I was.
Especially the Stranger album.
Anyone that know about American culture and History between 1949 and 1989, can understand perfectly what Billy is singing about. That Song will always be an 80's classic.
World.
yup
Brilliant how he got them all in a song , maybe not his best stuff but sure is catchie and memorable
Yep
@Joe Smith I find most musicians that were great in the 70's generally don't have any of their best work in the 80's! But as I get older I appreciate a lot of music I didn't necessarily apply so much at the time. I agree with your sentiment 100%
(& no disrespect to anyone but I've never seen ANYONE baffled by this song, love, like or hate it, the song was the art he put out. It's that simple)
The song was Joel's response to a conversation in the recording studio with Julian Lennon and a friend who had just turned 21. They were in the studio that day and stopped to say hi to Joel. The friend was lamenting how hard it was to turn 21 in 1989 and suggested to Joel that it was much more difficult growing up in the 1980s than the 1950s.
Joel, a life-long history buff, was surprised by the young man's views. His lack of understanding about the turmoil of the 1950s and 1960s, which included momentous events like the Korean conflict, the Civil Rights Movement and the Cold War, sparked Joel to record a mini-history lesson in music covering forty years, from 1949 to 1989. In less than five minutes, starting with 1949 (the year Joel was born), he mentions 117 important people, conflicts and other historical events, fads and cultural touchstones.
Thanks for your reaction, can't believe u never heard Billy Joel before, I loved this song.
U mentioned the song i. The 20-30s most people probably never heard of it....but I feel it was wrong for cardi & Megan to do their performance on super bowl when ya know families are watching. They could have at least put a warning before it.
Perfect explanation
I didnt know this! Thank you!
Yeah and as time goes on the song just gets longer because the world keeps turning and the fire keeps burning. Every generation thinks their problems are the worst ever and every generation has it's problems. That's just the world.
We sang this song in my 8th grade chorus concert in Spring 1993. We had to memorize the entire thing. Our chorus teacher broke us into groups and we reported on each thing mentioned in the lyrics. This was before the internet so I'm talking card catalog and books/,encyclopedias. If we wanted to get real high tech we could sign up to use 1 of the 2 computers in our library that had a computer encyclopedia on it! It was the world of our parents being most of our parents were probably 35 to 45 at the time. It was all about generational understanding!
I graduated from an alternative high school in 1991 and this song was a requirement for graduation...
we had to dissect every line in the song and it taught us something about history.
Same, but in 2012! I had a history teacher in high school who assigned each student a verse of this song. We all had to present the historical context of our verse to the class. Was actually a great way of teaching history.
We had to recreate the song for my 8th grade Social Studies class using events happening in our lives. Teacher gave us all a 5 year span to find different events to put into this
I was in 8th grade, my teacher made us listen to this. We had to pick anything from the song and right a paper on it. Love this song!
@@Kristirasmussen What did you pick ?
To be completely honest I can’t remember, I wish I could! 😉
In junior high, our history teacher assigned each of us in the class a report on one of the things mentioned in the song. I ended up with 'Children of Thalidomide'. Holy shit... that was a DARK subject for a 6th or 7th grader...
High School for me, but same assignment. Dont remotely regret it.
oh Gawd! Really you had to learn and deal with this, as a pre-teen?
sorta the same, but as I remember it we just did a few lines each in separate groups. i liked history class and Billy Joel so it was cool for me
He is naming events in his life time in chronological order.
He is giving you a history of the mid century forward. He is proving that every generation has contributed to the progression of history. This is about the world he grew up in and what prior generations had done. Future generations will look back and see what we have wrought. The lyrics are amazing and not just random words that fit a rhyme scheme. It was great watching you going from the chorus is great but the verses are random. Then you caught on to the progression of the verses. You have an excellent grasp of history
Sometime in the 90's my father played this song for me in the car on the way somewhere and broke it all down and explained all the things in the song to me. He then explained that this had been the things he'd seen in his life and lived through. That'll probably stay with me my whole life. Fires still burning.
The actual music video is much better than the live version in my opinion.
Agree.. seeing the family and kitchen morph over time really puts the history lesson visually.
These live performances reactions are hit and miss, audio be off sometimes 😪
@@JUNIORSUICIDE99 Exactly. I'm not a fan of reactions to live performances for this very reason. The studio version will always be the best version to analyze if only because the lyrics will be clearer. There are too many live performances that sound almost nothing like the studio version , ostensibly because the artist has performed it a thousand times and is so desperately sick of it - or is trying to make it sound fresh (Not the ideal circumstances to hear/judge a song for the first time).
Agreed. I get that there's copy write issues with original versions (for RUclips re broadcast) but the pace on this live version is off.
The official video starts with an infant and it grows as the song progresses so we get the view of what the baby was born into and as he grows the events that shape him as he becomes an adult .It is a history in outline.
I loved this song when it came out. Still love it to this day. Not otherwise a Billy Joel fan.
There's a Wiki page about this song that describes and links every event Joel sings about. Worth the time.
As a teenager in the 90s, my history teacher had this as one of our projects. He printed out the lyrics and for every couple we got right we got extra credit points for our overall grade. I drove my parents nuts over a weekend asking questions. Oh the days before the internet blew up lol
I'd love to hear Billy Joel do a I guess a sequel to this song covering events of the late 90s to today.
If you get to see him live he kinda does, he extends the song
I know it’s been done unofficially, but I’d like to see official updates done by selected artists. People that BJ gives permission to.
Love this song and most Billy Joel love the show!
I was a kid who loved history that this song really spoke to. To provide perspective, I was born in 80 with a father born in 24 and a mother in 44. I would listen to it over and over until I could sing it word for word. Knowing it so well has even helped me answer crossword puzzle clues.
He wrote this from headlines in his life. It's a great bloody song. You should check out 'Goodnight Saigon'. Bring a tissue.
I certainly can’t add anything other than the previous contributor. It is a chronology of his life. For someone in my age group, I recognize each and every thing he names as part of my memory collection.
He's telling the listener the events of his life
My History Teacher printed the lyrics and we just started from beginning til the end as a lesson plan
Your reaction was perfect. Its a history lesson. It certainly encouraged me to delve further into the events mentioned
At my Moms house is some wall art and the caption below it has a quote: "We didn't inherit the world from out parents. We're just borrowing it from our kids."
Maybe while were putting energy into denying responsibility for past fires we could focus on not starting any more.
Best quote I've heard all year.
I agree. But Billy was not apologizing for his generation in this song. He was making the point that each generation had its own trials. We should not blame the past but work for a better future.
Everytime I watch I get goosebumps and learn about music and the song.
This is 1 more I would definitely recommend watching the official music video. It is 1 of my favorite videos of all time, simply from the way that they manage to encapsulate exactly what he's singing in the song visually
Love that song. Amazing how he talks about history like that. Wow. Many wonder if he'd do a sequel to that song and bring it to today's events. Great reaction.

Time to listen to Billy Joel
You're thoughtful and smart. Wish you were teaching my kids.
This song is a history lesson - 40 years of pop culture & items in the news. During the 90s this song was used in history classes in high schools & colleges.
Since you seem to like songs with a message or story, you should listen to more of Billy Joel's music. He's an amazing song writer and performer. He just lays it all out there.
I agree. His Nylon Curtain album is a good example. Listen to Goodnight Siagon.
Grew up on Billy joel. This is my favorite one by him. I love the new cover by FOB, too. 😊, he is addressing the time of the late 40s going into the mid to late 80s, all major events that have impacted both the US and the areas of the world.
We listened to and studied this in World History class back in like 2000 my junior year of HS. It's just an ever progressing list of important world events. Silly kind of, but a clever birds eye view teaching tool for a quick recap.
I was waiting for him to say "I'll pull up the lyrics. In case I need them." Best belly laugh of the day.
Song starts in 1949 when Billy Joel was born. Then moves forward in chronological order of the events in his life.
We may have not have started the fire but we sure are stokin it....
My son who was born early 90's knows all the words to this song. Being a history buff himself, all events in the song are relevant. 😃
The events he mentions begin with the year of his birth, 1949. Some of the people are older but their cultural relevance will have been post 1949 as well.
He's going through the decades, naming famous happenings, people from each decade that were important
"have the lyrics pulled up just in case we need them"
For this song? Yeah, you'll probably need them alot.
I was born in 48 and this is memories from my youth. My dad was in the army stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco when the bay of pigs occurred. I had to show my ID to get on base after school. Very scary.
I love watching a reaction to this song from someone who has a knowledge of history and can speak intelligently about the events. Most people my age (39) and younger have no idea what this song is about, which is a shame, since those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it.
Thanks for reacting to one of my favorite childhood songs!
Another great and underrated in my opinion, Billy Joel song is "The Longest Time"
I guess the most underrated is "Leningrad" as it only got into the charts in some European countries.
Probably the coolest song with the most historical significance that was written in my lifetime. While I was born in the early 70’s this was the main contents of the history I was taught in school. This song then gets into my actual lifetime. This song is the most important pop song I think ever written.
I absolutely LOVE that what you pointed out several of the times you paused was the year of the historical event. I would have associated the timeframe with the artist or sports event named around the historical event. You're a very intelligent person. Highly recommend a deep dive into this song.
Also, just because there is a raunchy song in the 20s (or 50s or 60s or 70s, etc.) doesn't make WAP any less nasty. I'm not saying don't make those songs, but my personal opinion is that they shouldn't be a radio release... a deep cut would be my preference.
Some us still have those memories in our rearview!
"What do they have to do with each other?" They are all part of HISTORY.
i loved this song
Love your reactions!!
Also, looked up the lyrics to that song... wowsers!! lol...
It is the History lesson of all the things that happened and all the top celebrities from 1949 to 1989 during his lifetime
One of my absolute favorites by BJ!
You have the most soothing voice! Reminds me of the easy listening DJs on the FM stations in the 70s!
You are spot on with your analysis. All those names are people that span Billy Joel’s lifetime up to the time of the song. I know most too. Good study of the turbulence the baby boomers experienced. He should write a sequel for future generations to understand our current times.
I have always felt that Billy Joel's best song was and still is Piano Man.
It's used in history classes as a way to interest students and see how many they recognize
Billy Joel is 3 years older than me but those events were all affecting me, our generation 7 the future, it is a social history lesson, but the troubles (though different) have been with us since the beginning of man. The sixties were very chaotic, thus the line we tried to fix it, life itself is fractal in nature, every little "fix" spawns more chaos.
Awesome tune
Proud of you! You figured it out! So love that you did. Also, love that you brought up dirty blues! You rock!
I always interpreted to be about moments in history, icons of history and the moments and people that defined us as a nation-the good and the bad…
My generation, I remember them all!
We didn’t start it, but it seemed snowball so we tried to do something.
Every name and event and date he drops was a topic for controversy ...everyone had a side...or a heated debate...(fire)
My sophomore year of high school we were required to list and define each event or person mentioned in the song for World History. Such a long assignment.
If you just research each line of this song you get a great tour of the history of the world in the mid 1900's. It's also great to dance to in a club.
My 8th grade history class used this song to teach "recent history" events. Each student got 3-4 events, and we had to do a report for each of our events.
It was eye opening to say the least.
best line in the song we didn't start the fire but we need to fight it.
Kind sir I have just watched several of your reactions to songs I really like and I must say we seem to have a kinship. As a result I’ll subscribe. The sound and musicianship as well as the message creat quality music. I would like to suggest Youth of the Nation by POD. Every reactor who sees this video agrees this is extremely impactful and NEEDS to be heard by all because it is so applicable to today’s societal situations. I promise this will be on your playlist.
Thank you very much for playing that I haven’t heard it in years and I still love it. I love your Channel I learn a lot from your interpretation
A recording of this song and lyrics for each student made it into our high-school history classes when it came out. All of the names, places, and events were in order and we discussed them and their relevance in history.
Good for You. Finally a Reactor that gets it! New Sub.
Exactly! Billy is saying that the world was screwed up when he was born in 1949, it was screwed up while he grew up and when he became an adult and it will always be screwed up. The people and places he mentions highlight the journey from birth to when the song was recorded. 🔥
I watched his musical at the Pantagious in Hollywood. One of the best songs lyrically ever.
Excellent choice!!!!!
When it first came out I listened to this on repeat until I had every word memorized. Skip ahead several years and was talking to coworkers. Don't remember how it came up but one didn't believe me Bet me 20 bucks I couldn't keep up with it. Little did the guy know I had it on my phone, love BJ. Wish I had a picture of his face when I still knew it by heart. Bought a couple pizzas for everyone with the money.
Yep we didn't start the trouble but always have to deal with it.
I'm wishing so hard you made a deep dive into this song and dissected it into a fascinating lesson to view.
I am SOO GLAD you mentioned Shave Em dry!!!
It's about stuff since Billy was born that some of the things that went on when he was growing up. My dad was in the Cuban Missile Crisis. RIP Dad
Billy Joel’s angry young man is a great one
I think a good way to describe this song in as a mosaic on the sights and sounds around, while he was growing up. Just as passing the pages of an old scrapbook album, and saying "ok" out loud.
It's a history of cultural US and world events that The Baby Boomers(him) experienced up until 1989, when this song was written. It's Brilliant and will forever hold up as a great song. Billy Joel has a slew of hits, B Sides, and lesser known songs that are wonderfully crafted. Joel was a prolific songwriter and with a backing band that make his live performances bucket list material for everyone. I'm happy to have seen him, only twice, but both times were such a great experience!!
this is a history lesson of the events in Billy's lifetime.
He was told by a young man, that all the problems of the days were caused by Billy's generation. and basically Billy is saying no we didnt start this because we were saying the same thing while he was growing up.
The official video explains it better as it starts as him as a baby. This is all the events of Billy’s life up to the writing of the song.
Just tuning in the last few days...who is this guy (back story), where did he grow up that he hasn't a clue about recording artist, but yet, extremely articulate, bright and insightful.
Yeah, the genesis of this song was Billy Joel talking to a younger man, with each of them saying that they have it so much rougher than the other person had it. Basically calling out people who say "your generation had it better than us" or "that things have never been as bad as they are now."
Every verse is roughly a decade of newspaper headlines that published during Billy Joel’s life, from 1949 to 1989. Every other comment has info on why he wrote it, and it was a massive hit on the radio for a while.
Imagine someone referencing Billy Joel as "this guy" 🤣😆😄
Met the dude on this tour. I was 15. He’s the coolest. He told me his stuff was shit and learn classical. His people sent pictures. He’s really a green guy. Fast fact: he played first rock concert in the USSR
cool, thanks for sharing, but it was hard to read due to lack of grammar and vague in parts.
The fire has been burning through all of human history. Each generation seems to think that their generation is the first to experience these types of things.
Props on the Channel. Great stuff!
If you are truly a music historian and you have never heard of “Blind Tom Wiggins” please go search him out. His story is by far one of the most incredible stories ever. Just a little something for anyone reading this, he was 5 years old when he recorded his 1st composition in 1854. Blind Tom Wiggins! I can promise you will leave inspired and have a truly different perspective as to what talent is after discovering Blind Tom Wiggins.
Basically saying all these things were all kind of influential in shaping how their generation was. Drama wise, good things, bad things everything. And yeah exactly what you said. There's just tons of things happening all the time.
I'd love to see you analyze more Billy Joel. An overlooked gem is "Leningrad."
Its total history in a song
This song and "it's end of the world as we know it" by REM are great history songs. If you do REM, have those lyrics.
This song is a giant collection of all of the major international scandals in the 1900s up through the 80s.
It's amazing how he could make a list of events into a good song
Each verse is a decade in time from the 40s through 80s
Every era has been crazy and sadly, almost wholly repeated. Over and over. Humans are dumb and wonderful and awful and sometimes just confused. I think most of us are doing the best we can. Bless us all.
In one of my history classes in HS we went over this song and touched on all of the events and people mentioned, then wrote.a new verse picking up where it left off
1 of my high school teachers have each of us a line in this song and we had to research and discuss each item in the line we were given. 🤣 I am 46yr old now and I still remember mine was "Roy Cohn, Juan Peron, Toscanini, Dacron". 😉
In high school we were given a research assignment dealing with this song. The song was described as "a parentheses around the cold war". I'll agree with others he might have better songs in regard to the music, but I absolutely love this one for the lyrics. Definitely check out more Billy Joel.
It's a history lesson....🎼😁☮️
Absolutely love Billy Joel. He's an amazing composer...yes, he's a boomer. I've always been fascinated by this song. As a boomer, it pushes a lot of buttons for me.
It isn't just about the downs but the ups. When the fire is hotter and cooler. People, places or events that altered the world a little. Going from the 50s up to the 80s.
