    Important notes: Don't use a powered USB hub when initially pairing your dongles (extenders are okay). Also, I mention using OVR Advanced Settings at the end, which turns out to be an essential step that you will want to consider! If you proceed from there, be sure to take a look at the "Using SteamVR chaperone instead of WMR bounds" section of the text tutorial: github.com/PumkinSpice/MixedVR/wiki/ReadMe

    Thank You! After re-calibrating and re-adjusting my setup a gazillion times I came across your tutorial and I finally got everything calibrated, much more easily than what I was doing. You are hitting all the details: calibrating the left knuckle with the right hp controller, turning the knuckle upside down, holding them with 2 hands if you need. and making sure that you're looking straight at the controllers during calibration. Awesome!

    • @TappingTV
      @TappingTV  3 года назад

      My guess is that the issue is on the WMR side. Probably your G1 is "recentering" the playspace so to speak, due to it not recognizing a feature in your room, etc. Basically, I would recommend clearing your environment data in WMR and redoing the room set up. Try to have the headset pointed towards a very constant feature of your room, like a couch or desk that doesn't move between play sessions. That way, it always finds that feature and keeps you in the same space relative to the base stations. I hope this helps, and/or gives you some ideas -- let me know if it works!

    • @TappingTV
      @TappingTV  2 года назад

      It allows one device (such as an index controller) to connect to the PC wirelessly! Usually an index headset has two dongles built-in (so you don’t need to buy extra dongles), but if you use a G2 for example, then you need to buy the dongles, or use a Vive/index headset, to be the receivers.

    I have a pretty large playspace and don't really need boundaries since I use a mat in the center anyway. Because of this is it still recommended doing the OVR Settings, or is it purely to set the boundaries?

    • @TappingTV
      @TappingTV  2 года назад

      Mainly for boundaries! BUT you might actually sometimes run into issues running certain games, because of the way they assume you are using a native SteamVR headset. I find this with some seated games, in which case doing OVR advanced settings may be necessary. (and just realized how late this response was, sorry haha)

    Hello tapping! Thank you very much for taking the time to help the community.
    I've noticed that anyone who tries to set up FBT with an Hp Reverb G2 is always using steam dongles. Is this dongle absolutely REQUIRED if I want to use the original G2 controllers? Additionally, I have the 5 Tundra Trackers and the tundra dongle.

    Great video, thanks. I will be using old Vive to create Vive wands with hp reverb g2 setup. I presume, after I've completed the setup, every time I want to play again, I need to switch on HTC Vive headset to estabilish conection for wands?
    After I've done playing can I just switch off everything including base stations and it should all work next time I play?
    In this setup, will the boundaries of play area show up when I get close to the edge of play area? Perhaps I need to instal mentioned Steam chaperone for that?
    I am asking all these questions as I am still waiting for reverb G2 to arrive, otherwise I would be trying to answer these questions myself. Once again thank you for this detailed tutorial.

    • @TappingTV
      @TappingTV  Год назад +1

      No problem, you're welcome! Yes, your Vive headset will need to be connected to the PC via USB and needs power, just not HDMI/DP -- not sure if it needs to be "on" (if there's a standby mode), but let me know if you find out!
      After you're done, you can leave the base stations running, or you can turn them off -- I think with the Vive headset you'll have bluetooth connection to them, so you can set your preferences in steamVR
      For the chaperone boundary, you can use WMR boundaries. But if you prefer using SteamVR boundaries, then you'll want to follow the instructions near the end here: github.com/PumkinSpice/MixedVR/wiki/ReadMe
      (There's a section called "Using SteamVR chaperone instead of WMR bounds")
      This step can be essential for certain games to function properly, btw, so worth trying out either way!

      @pistopit7142 Год назад

      @@TappingTV Thank you so much for this info. I will definitely use it for boundaries setup.
      As for controlers. I have tried them and they are actually better than old vive wands so all the complaints from various users about trackng were exagurated in my opinion.
      I have a different problem: an image in a headset is slightly shaking from time to time, sort of like unstable headset tracking. Perhaps I need to play a bit with video settings to make it more stable. If you knwo anything about it I would appreciate any info.
      Also jumping from HTC vive is a big jump in resolution. Things just look amazing. That said I am on the other hand learning how to ignore smaller FOV.
      Once again thank you for all your work with the YT content.

    • @TappingTV
      @TappingTV  Год назад +1

      @@pistopit7142 Regarding tracking, yes user reports of tracking vary a lot -- I actually did a huge tracking video because of it lol. Agreed, t's not that bad.
      A shaky image in the headset could be a couple things -- depends when you see this. If it's during fast paced games like beat saber, it's possible to experience this "panel shake" just due to fast vibrations of your head (I'm not sure why the G2 seems to have this more than other headsets).
      If it's during slower gameplay, or if you're experiencing this when you're not moving at all, it sounds like your headset might be losing tracking briefly sometimes. I recommend clearing the environment data and re-set up your room boundaries (I know it's a pain with Vive wands to set up too). Also make sure you do not have blank walls since the headset needs areas of contrast. For this reason, I recommend ironing out the G2 tracking with some play sessions first, before adding in the Vive wands. One other thing to note is that tracking data is all handled through the USB ports, so it can also be worth trying different USB ports.
      And again no problem at all :) Hope you get the details ironed out to fully enjoy the headset!

    How is your experience of tracking refresh rate? Like how fluid do you feel the motion is?
    The original G2 controllers feel terrible to me in this regard, but the index setup is kinda similar. Feels like 45hz/fps with drops sometime. Not talking about low fps in graphics here but refresh rate of the controllers positions.
    Maybe my HMD is to far away, gotta try to have it closer.

    • @TappingTV
      @TappingTV  3 года назад +1

      Tracking refresh rate is very fast -- usually around 120 Hz for the base stations and then it's extrapolated to 1000 Hz. The G2 controllers I believe are 60 Hz extrapolated to 1000 Hz. This is needed for any fast motions that might happen. What you're observing with your eyes will be related to the graphics refresh rate -- but it's interesting you don't experience it with other graphics. It is still very possible your graphics are stuttering -- VR handles head movement different than re-rendering objects. So tracked objects like the controllers might look jittery if your FPS is low. I would test to see if lowering your graphics down helps! Try a super low resolution and see if you still see stuttering. Otherwise, I'm not sure tbh :/
      And yes having your HMD nearby is good! (presumably a Vive or Index is what you're using?) But I found the range to be pretty decent, so hopefully that's not the issue.

    the reason there are not a lot of mentions of this set up is because its inconsistent and for alot of users the play space drift is so bad that's its unplayable for games that ask you walk around which is kinda the entire point of virtual reality and the developer who made this software has not updated it in almost a year
    sure you can play beat saber and game where you relatively stand in place or dont move around much on on the X and Y axis but you will not be able to use a gun stock at all you cant walk around to do like tactical entry into rooms EXT. but if you have a small play space and dont mind your controllers oscillating when you spin because the calibration is missing a scale factor then it works fine

      That’s part of my point! I’ve seen many people mention this set up, and even praise it, without giving it a proper review. But this is exactly why I believe there need to be more reviews out there so that more people are aware of the pros and cons before investing in the set up!

    • @TappingTV
      @TappingTV  3 года назад

      Yup, once a controller is paired to a dongle it will stay paired to that dongle.
      For the G2 versus Quest 2 situation: yes you will need to recalibrate again. Since both are on different software (WMR vs Oculus). Also, just as a quick tip: if you use the quest 2 with index controllers I recommend using virtual desktop (not air link or link) and select ‘center to playspace (staged tracking)’ in VD settings. This should help you with not having to calibrate all the time. Link and Airlink are notoriously awful for mixedVR set-ups with the Quest. Hope this helps!
      I think there might be a way to save the "profile" in space cal, so that maybe you can switch between profiles without needed to fully calibrate each time(?) but not sure, haven't done that myself tbh.

      FYI you’ll also need the two dongles to connect the valve controllers to your PC. As for calibrations, if you do it properly and your room does not have any significant changes (and your basestations are in the same spot) you should not have to recalibrate at all, in theory. I rarely recalibrate. Just make sure you start your HP headset facing the same way each time and WMR should set up the same boundaries each time. Goodluck!

    Question - every guide I have seen on how to add Index controllers to an existing WMR G2 setup assumes you want to calibrate your play space boundaries. In my G2 setup, I usually only am sitting or standing, so I have never done a boundary calibration. If I do not need the play space boundary calibrated, do I really need to do any of the calibrations? Once the controllers are paired and seen in SteamVR along with the base stations, will it just work without going through the calibration with G2 & Index controllers in the same hand? Thanks!

    • @TappingTV
      @TappingTV  3 года назад +1

      Good question! You do still need to do the calibrations. I actually use the G2 without boundaries as well. To understand why, we can think about the how the tracking systems are working: The G2 is camera-based and looks around your room for features such as couch, table, posters on wall, etc. The index controllers look out around your room and only see the base stations. Thus, from your computers perspective, there is no way to relate the two spaces... it doesn't know where the basestations are placed in your room. (even if it did, there still at least needs to be some software to relate the two). So that's why the two spaces are different, until you calibrate them so your computer knows how they are related. I hope this explanation helps, but feel free to ask more!

I picked up a pair of the "Knuckles Duster Light" grip add-ons on Amazon, and they made the controllers usable with the straps tightened, also my finger tracking is more consistent - my middle finger was very poorly tracked until I added the Dusters to make the grips thicker. The company beta.Form.solutions has even thicker "Knuckles Duster Two" only available from their website, shipped from New Zealand, I might try those also eventually.

    • @TappingTV
      @TappingTV  2 года назад

      Hi! First I should ask, which headset are you using? If you're using the G2, calibrations should normally hold between sessions -- I could advise trying to clear your environment data (go into WMR settings -> environment -> "Clear environment data") and re-setup your boundaries with the G2. You can also try starting your G2 sessions in the same orientation each time (face your computer, for example). Typically calibrations are lost because WMR chooses a different room orientation when it starts up. Additionally, when starting your Index controllers, you can hold them above your head, to ensure they are seen by both basestations simultaneously. Again, gives the best chance of everything being aligned as it was the first time. I'm going to copy paste this response in case other people want this information; I hope this helps, let me know how it goes!

      The base stations don’t connect to anything but power. They are passive “lighthouses” - the controllers and headset “see” them and figure out where the controllers/headset are. Think of it like how Oculus inside-out systems “see” furniture or features in the room. Basestations are just very precise features you put in the room for your controllers and headset to see, which is why it’s actually still considered an inside-out tracked system!

    • @TappingTV

      One thing to add though, is that they can connect via Bluetooth through a native steamVR headset, so you can change channel numbers and power settings on the basestation remotely - but they don’t need this capability to be used for tracking!

      Hi! So the lighthouses are just passive (they don't communicate with the PC). The controllers themselves need to pair to the PC, which means: yes, you do need the dongles, or you can use a steamVR headset in place of the dongles! As for USB 2.0 ports, don't consider that a major issue -- USB2.0 extension cables will work fine from your 3.0 ports. You can also invest in a USB hub if needed. And you can even just try your 3.0 ports on their own, although there is a possibility of interference leading to poor tracking quality.

      Hmm, I suppose my first question is why do you want to pair your basestations? Just as an FYI, they are passive light sources, all they do is emit light (infrared lasers to be more precise). So it's really the controllers/sensors in them that need to be paired, not the basestations. BUT, if you still want to pair them, I would follow these instructions: github.com/monstermac77/vr#MixedVR-Manager and if you have further questions I would encourage you to make a post in /r/MixedVR on reddit. I bet some more knowledgeable people can help you out! I hope this helps a little bit, but feel free to ask more. Having "bluetooth not available" is normal though, since the basestations can only connect via special bluetooth receivers contained in a native SteamVR headset such as the Index or the Vive (I believe for the Vive it's actually the link box). But the instructions I posted above should be able to work without it (at least, they are intended to).
