Valve Index Controllers VS HTC Vive Wands | Should you upgrade in 2020?

  • When the HTC Vive was first announced, I was finally sold on virtual reality’s potential; but it wasn’t the headset that convinced me. It was the 1:1 tracked controllers that were unparalleled at the time; they were clunky, featured gigantic touch pads instead of joysticks, and still to this day cost $130 apiece to replace--but they were the only thing out there, and they were amazing. Here we are four years later--and many vive owners are left wondering whether it's finally time to update their controllers.

    Thought I should say this. Beat saber has an ingame saber tailor. You don't need the mod anymore. But the mod is still better in customization wise. But the in game fixes the issues you stated. (From what I have heard from friends who use index controllers) just letting you know :)

      @@mellowmanta8975 I'm still waiting on the full kit ;-;
      But from what I heard, you can mimic the wands placement if you do wish, it is finicky but there are placement tutorials or shall I say numbers, on reddit and other places, it also helps to spend some time to mess around with it to get it where you're comfortable with.
      Hope this also helps :3
      And keep in mind, this is coming from someone who plays beat saber pretty much religiously. So I was also worried when I heard the words "saber placement is very off and feels weird" stomach dropped. But then realized what saber talor was for. But then they added the in game adjuster. Soooooo, that helped me with my doubts.
      Now I cant wait! cause I heard the index controllers are amazing for beat saber mainly cause you can relax your hand while playing thanks to the controllers gripping your hand and not letting it slip off! So I'm excited! :3

    Great review, being a VIVE owner and first seeing these controllers first announced made be slightly jealous and when it was confirmed you could use them with the VIVE it felt like a necessary upgrade but I’ve been waiting for a video like this to pop up.

    Great review! I'm a OG Vive pre-order'er batch 1 back in 2016 and was a pre-order first-batch for Index. Everything you stated was spot-on! Would be great to also mention for those looking into a used OG Vive to make sure to get v2 wands (blue strap) which have been around for about a year now. The v1 wands had tons of issues with the trackpad pad getting worn out. I've got 7 of these fuckers sitting around and only one of them is in working order, while my blue strap v2's have been heavily used in the Onward league and are yet to have a single issue.

    I have to say that I love the wands compared to the rift controllers when it comes to gun range sims like Lethal VR. The trigger pull has a tighter action before the actual click. Also the thicker grip, nice haptic feedback and the added weight make it feel more like you are holding a hand gun. I am not sure how this is gonna feel with the Index. Also saber games like Sariento make me feel like I am holding a hefty weapon. The base station tracking of course is second to none. I luv my wands and today they go for a measly 40 bucks a peace.

    I went from a cheap oculus CV1 to a vive, the headset is great, far more durable, but the controllers ... wow, its actually amazing that someone saw the HTC wands and thought they where a good idea, and yes these headsets came out at around the same time, the vive wands have no sort of gesture tracking or anything, the grip pads are shotty at best and the track pads do what you want them to do only half the time

  • @dathyr1
    @dathyr1 Год назад

    Well it is Nov 2022 and for the Index hand controllers, some say the Index Controllers are also not that durable. I just purchased the Valve Index and also wanted to get the base stations setup and working in case I want to jump to another VR headset that uses this tracking.
    My hand controller interactions are very minimal, since I do mainly SIM Racing and sitting down. My prior VR headset is still the Rift S and works great for what I do in VR.

I like it so far I haven't had any problems with it except 3 major gripes. The bases are the old version 1 bases and not the updated ones. HTC is shipping this bundle with the old Vive wands [they should have upgraded them by now, they've had a giant lead]. and last one is the cable comes loose from the headset relatively easy if you flip up the display frequently. I don't know if the last one is because I'm just being too rough or its just not built secure enough. All I know is I was freaking out when my headset kept going grey screen every time I adjust my view. It took a few days for me to learn the cable can be disconnected from the headset itself. So I unplugged it and re-plugged it in. It seems to be fixed but it would be better if this wasn't an issue to begin with.

    I came here wondering the difference between the two controllers and as a index owner i absolutely love that they decided to go with this style instead of an upward slant, it feels so good in beatsaber
    and to anyone out there wondering what VR headset you should get, if you can afford it i highly recommend getting the index (its worth the wait). Valve is trustworthy and have amazing customer support when it comes to RMA's.

    As a owner of both the index controllers for 1 ½ years and unfortunately a user of the vive wands temporarily as my index controllers are beeing RMA'd, here's thought:
    Index controllers clearly win in comfort, gaming time and overall all points to the index controllers, but they are extremely sensitive, will break easily, like the thumbstick sensor broke on me even tho ive been extremely carefull with the latest set ive gotten from valve, but other than that, valve's RMA process is pretty good, they are very good with replacing faulty products and are very nice with the communications etc;
    As for the vive 2.0 controllers, there's only one thing i can vouch for them'; the durability, they won't really ever break cause they are built like tanks, but the way they are used in games like VRChat is so weird to use; but you'll get used to it i guess;

Just canceled my index order today because for 1 000 ‎€ i want some reliable hardware and their good support for RMAs is just not excuse. They should adress this and do some kind of hardware revision. Still there is 8+ weeks to ship so maybe wait for HP reverb G2 or Oculus quest 2 has leaked on bloomberg and rumors are that it will have better refresh rate, FOV, and full finger tracking so with link and more decent price that could be new index killer. I rock beatsaber with the knuckles. Doing songs on expert+ without issue, well besides my skill being an issue xD
    Also for games like vrchat the knuckles are just a much greater experience, having finger use in a social setting is much more immersive.

    I just upgraded my vive wand controller batteries. IDK if my old ones were representative or not, because I got them used, but I was able to add significant battery life with a 3rd party battery replacement and if there was any extra weight, it was negligible.

    I have been using both a vive cosmos elite and a quest 2 for a while now. I really didn’t like how clunky the vive controllers were, recently mine started acting up. In games I can’t walk straight or right. I just ordered the index controllers and am excited for the improved immersion. In my opinion I always liked the quest controllers more than the vive.

    Agreed that it bugs me to no end how wand/sword/paddle games just can't get the Index controllers right out of the box. I used to love Racket Fury (ping pong) on the Oculus and when I swapped to the Index it feels like the paddle is angled way too far forward just like the Beat Sabers. STILL no support out to fix that compatibility issue in Racket Fury though it looks like Beat Saber adjusted it.

    I like the vibe controllers they are sturdy and I do not have stick drift problems that's the only problem with analog sticks I have that's why I choose to play with the vibe ones instead of the index controllers

    A very real use case (and the reason I am here) is upgrading a Vive cosmos to the lighthouse tracking, as you can not use the controllers that came with it.

    • @TopSpecMedia
      @TopSpecMedia  4 года назад

      I wasn't even aware you could use lighthouse tracking with the vive cosmos; that's pretty neat because I remember hearing that the inside-out tracking was pretty clunky compared to what oculus has been doing - Aaron

      @@TopSpecMedia It has a swapable face-plate that adds the sensors. I got the cosmos on sale as a test to see how much I would like VR, and while I haven't had the problems I saw in a lot of reviews (I think they made improvements in software patches), I am thinking about upgrading

    Valve doesn't call it "squeezability", they're just using terms the general population would use instead of coming up with some fancy, tech name for it XD
    Oh and a curved lightsaber isn't unnatural. Just look at Count Dooku's sabers.

    as an Owner of the original vive I can say some thing to that. Yeah the vive wants are kinda heavy and feel huge when holding, but till this point vive is still using them in the newest cosmos elite, with that its a fact that the vive (not pro) isnt supported by vive anymore which is sad. they just dont produce anything from that series anymore [ My Point of View in Germany]. The "Knuckels" are only called that way by the community but the name is "Index controllers" and the Devkit name was "Knuckels" since there wasnt a name for it at that point. The Index Controllers are great but not as well made as the Knuckels DK3. I got a friend who own Index controllers and I used them and compared to the Knuckels I got and they feel cheaper. [ To mention I got my Knuckels DK3 from a friend of mine who used them long time bevor having to sell them]

  • @Zakrulan

    HTC does sell pre-owned vives. But they are usually labelled as (Certified Refurbished) aka those which had some defect, got sent back, htc repaired it and decide it to resell it. I bought such a Vive kit, a Cosmos Elite (Certified Refurbished) it was cheaper than a brand new but works just like a brand new, got no issues with it except these damn Vive Wands, I really dont like how it feels in my hands. Clunky af. Im planning on getting a pair of Index "Knuckles" since from what I saw so far from this and other vids it has quite a nice grip and feel.

    Just got the index controllers and...idk if there's something wrong with my hands but they just seem like a massive downgrade from the wands aside from the center of gravity being much better.
    And why are the haptics so weak? That's not my hand's fault.
