I feel like this dude just had too many expectations compared to the other films on this list.
Wow I’m surprised at your rating of last night in soho. I didn’t think about the social message of the film at all while watching it. I just kept remembering how boring most scary movies are and how hard it is to make an iconic atmosphere that’s not over done. It was really good! Less signature Edgar camera work but it seems like he was using his style to tell a compelling story and take you on a ride. Oh well. I loved it.
I thought that the cinematography was really good, and the components (lighting, costume and set design, etc.) went a long way to create an unsettling atmosphere. I DID pick up on the social message, and I loved that it took a different approach to the type of horror movie it was (a social horror ala Jordan Peele but swap out racism for sexism).
I also quite liked it, I still have some complaints with the 2nd half but overall I just thought it was a really fun watch, probably a 4/5 from me. I find it a bit concerning though with Wright recently, he seems to have forgotten how to write a good ending. Everyone and their mother gives Baby Driver 5/5's but that movie's ending isn't all that great either, so why are so many other people hating on this one? Maybe it's just astronomical expectations being let down.
I don’t know, I didn’t really find the story all that compelling. I didn’t find it at all thrilling, even though it’s a horror. I also didn’t care all that much about the characters, I didn’t feel emotionally attached. I also found it to be extremely predictable, none of the twists or plot points surprised me. I thought the cinematography was good. But the story wasn’t, at least for me personally.

I disagree with your take on Last Night in Soho. I found myself relating to the main character. The lighting, use of colour and sound felt actually pretty well done. I didn’t think the social commentary was that abrasive. If anything it may have been redundant. But I enjoyed her exploration and longing for a girl who she wants to be. My friends and I specifically chose it because we’ve seen a “Halloween like movie” every damn year and we wanted something different. This was a great choice
Spoilers- It was a 9.5 for me, one of my favorites. I really disagree with his take and this is actually one of the films that didn’t put feminism in your mouth, he didn’t make her “boyfriend” a terrible guy he made him really sweet but showed an accurate take on what the 60s were like for performers, it wasn’t like girl power all the way I thought everything about it was incredible I won’t get too much into it though
The dance scene alone is worth the price of admission and the ending is fantastic. It was a bit on the slow side as it ramped up but once it did I absolutely loved it.
I think the emoji movie was given more praise than last night in soho by karsten; which goes to show how the intention and ambition of a film has in influencing reviews and responses.
Memoria is my film of the year. As I left the theatre, it seemed like everything had changed somehow, you enter a kind of trance-like state while watching this film. For me - as the title says - it's about memory, both individual and collective, explored through sound. I love Apichatpong's metaphysical approach to filmmaking, and the way he explores the intangible, can't wait to see what he does next.
Karsten: loves Wes Anderson and Jacques Tati Wes Anderson: makes a film that clearly takes inspiration from Jacques Tati while also being more Wes Anderson than anything Wes has ever made. This just feels like it was made for you

I literally finished rewatching French Dispatch before seeing this. I liked it the first time but grew to love it the second time. You just kind of have to roll with this magazine-movie format Wes is going for which is just the most Wes Anderson concept ever concocted (to date).
You should watch more James Bond movies man. I would recommend seeing On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, since it’s a more personal and emotional movie just like Casino Royale and it has one of the best soundtracks in a movie ever.
I think you're wrong on Last Night in Soho. I absolutely felt the impact and connected to the character. Loved the twists and honestly it was an uncomfortable and scary film to me, but perhaps that's just my perspective as a college age girl.

These are the best films of that month in my opinion: 1. Last Night In Soho: 8.5/10 Are bad CGI ghosts overused? Absolutely. Do it's jump scares work? No. However, Edgar Wright's film is an unnerving and deeply personal allegory that concerns nostalgia, social isolation, and the artistic process is nearly perfect. 2. Dune: 8/10 (tie) A perfect Dune film. The only obvious flaw is the sometimes distractingly awkward (if necessary) delivery of exposition. 2. The French Dispatch: 8/10 A film where a genius film director's vision is completely unrestrained and unfettered. It is slightly inaccessible and niche, but it is also refreshing to see something this artistically daring in 2021 (especially in a mainstream theater). I also adored its homage to the French New Wave and Godard specifically. 3. The Last Duel: 7/10 The acting is superb, the set pieces are impeccably designed and use only lightly utilize computer-generated visual effects. However, the Rashomon-style story is flawed in its execution from both a writing and pacing perspective.
Honestly, the viewing of Dune I enjoyed the least was the IMAX one (my second viewing out of three), but that's only because whoever set up the audio in the auditorium had no idea what they were doing. The bass was way too low and the highs distorted in my ear canals. The other two times I watched it I was in one of Landmark Cinema's Laser Ultra auditoriums and it was incredible. Really crisp laser projection, and more importantly, Dolby Atmos set up my someone with human ears. I finally brought some friends out to it last night and they were just as enamoured at it as I was on my first watch. I can't believe it took me a week from my first viewing to find Sardaukar throat singing on RUclips. It changed my life when I saw it (or dare I say, felt it) for the first time. SO glad someone did a 1-hour extended version. Absolutely mesmerizing

I Loved Dune so much I've seen it twice in IMAX such a grand epic of a film has its issues but man it dragged me into its world like the book did incredible cinema experience I need to see The French Dispatch and Titane they look really good
without exaggeration, this last quarter of 2021 will be the time period where I spent the most money on movie in my entire life. saw dune twice already. dying to see spencer and the french dispatch.
I've seen a lot of horror films last month, maybe the most in my lifetime even though I'm a big horror fan. Midnight Mass, Possession, Inside, The Final Girls, VHS 94 and His House are some of the best horror films that I've seen.
I saw Titane and knew nothing about it. Crazy experience, the theater was literally yelling WTF to the screen, I was laughing like a maniac. I have to see the French Dispatch soon! Thanks for the reviews. Edit: Loved the French Dispatch too, I have to see it again. So many beautiful and funny details.
You're soooo wrong about Soho. It was wonderful. The black guy was a bad character, but overall I thought it was pretty solid. If you want a fun movie, Ron's Gone Wrong was fun. Laughed like 70% of the movie time. Favorite animated movie this year.
I agree with you on Dune (1984). Saw it this week and even if the movie is seriously flawed (no wonder why David Lynch doesn't want to talk about it), the effort put to create such a distinct world by his cast and crew is quite remarkable. It's an interesting watch.
Omg, Mad God is finished?! Woo, lesssss gooo!! I remember seeing like, a clip of it or something years ago, and it just sat in the back of my mind with no memory of the title or name of the creator or title of the video. I just remembered the visuals and woooo boii am I excited to watch it! Welp, too bad I can't watch it yet. I'll find a way eventually.
the thing about the ring is I remember one day I was watching gintama and they were mocking the film now when I saw the shot of the woman popping out of the tv I started laughing

I watched Squid Game, Enemy, The Green Knight, Prisoners, Kingsglaive FFXV, Troy, Wonder Woman 1984, The Social Network, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Burning, Kill Bill Vol. 2, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Gladiator, Heat, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Kingdom of Heaven, Dune, Dune again, Blade Runner 2049, The Place Beyond the Pines, The Forever Purge, Scream and The Royal Tenenbaums. Thanks for your time.
Nah that Last Night in Soho take is a violation, the first half of that movie is probably some of the most engaging film making I've ever seen. I was so fascinated with the whole atmosphere Wright creates with the costume design, setting, lighting etc. However, I don't think the second half is as strong but that could be due to the whole deconstruction of the world that we find so dazzling in the beginning.
Good list. But I don't think Last Night in Soho deserved a whole segment of hate. Definitely had at least some good things going for it in my opinion, overall I liked it. But that's just me, still great video!
Yay Au hasard Balthazar! I love it so much. I really gotta watch Titane. This month I watched Dog Day Afternoon (Sydney Lumet who also directed 12 Angry Men) for the first time. It was awesome!!!

Love to see some different opinions, it was one of my favorites of all time and I think it may be the most *split* (Anya Taylor joy pun) film I’ve ever seen in terms of reviews it was near perfect for me haha
Could you do a video on «The worst person in the world»? It would be extremely interesting hearing your thoughts. And also your take on the two other actors, not just Renate Reinsve☺️
Where did you see Mad God? I tried to get into the virtual screenings at Fantasia Fest in Montreal, but missed it due to personal reasons, I’ve frantically been looking for another way to view it. It’s easily been my most anticipated thing of the year.
Started with Motel Hell, ended with Premutos. Slasher to Shot-On-Video insanity. In-between I got some Eurosleaze in (Burial Ground, Cannibal Ferox), giallo (Tenebre), Cat. 3 HK (The Boxer’s Omen), arthouse (Possession), and some more SOV (Feeders, Maleficia, Boardinghouse, Bloodstream, Cannibal Cult, etc) It was a good month.
it's my impression or karsten is more and more enjoying movies? i mean, look at the amount of movies he watched this month and he liked almost all of them that's cool
I've seen so many movies and love too many movies throughout my life but if I had to just pick one. Kill Bill would be my favorite movie in the universe
What I watched this month No Time to Die- 5/5. What an incredible sendoff for Craig’s Bond. Dune- 6/5. An epic in every sense of the word. Everything, from the set and costume design to the cinematography to the score to the acting was pitch perfect. Can’t wait for Part 2 Last Night In SoHo- 4/5 or 4.5/5 (I haven’t fully decided). I understand why this film is so divisive for people, but I really loved about 90% of this. But, I will say that I’ve haven’t been THIS conflicted on how I feel about a film in a long time. I have to respectfully disagree with your take on the movie, Karsten, but I understand where you’re coming from. Everything was really working for me up until the twist, which kind of worked for me, but also really didn’t at the same time. The French Dispatch- 4/5. A ton of this movie really worked for me, especially the first two segments/stories and the Owen Wilson on a bike bit, but the third segment kind of lost me. It still got some chuckles out of me, but it didn’t land as well as the first two segments did. Still in my top 5 Wes movies though

The only movie I saw October was my first serious viewing of an horror movie..I saw "Lake Mungo" (2008) I highly urge people to see this movie.
I watched Noroi: The Curse this month. It was amazing.
I definitely get why you didn't enjoy last night in Soho but idk I loved it it's my favourite film of the year
i'm not able to watch another movie after watching dune. i just wanna see it again. what a masterful movie.
Yo Ducournau is a genius
Funny, I'd give French Dispatch a 2/5 and Soho a 5/5, funny how that works
6:35 damn that letterboxd plug doe🤣🤣
the thing about the ring is I remember one day I was watching gintama and they were mocking the film now when I saw the shot of the woman popping out of the tv I started laughing
Thanks film man, Ill now go and pawn off your opinions as my own whenever Im in a conversation about film. That makes me feel very smart

Your feelings on last night in soho are my feelings on dune.
except last night in soho doesn't have incompetent sound mixing.
Titane was my favorite this year and i was waiting for dune like an 8 years old is waiting for christmas. i don't know when will i watch it again though :D
You give away 5/5s like candy on Halloween!
I haven't given a movie a 5/5 in years!!
If this man likes casino royale I can't wait to hear his opinion on Skyfall

I dont know man i really liked last night in soho
Me laughing at your comment about Memoria because....same. And then *the twist*?! Wild.
It’s my favorite time of month!!!
"I'm very excited for house of Gucci"
Me: same
The laziest fucking comment I've ever seen
Nah that Last Night in Soho take is a violation, the first half of that movie is probably some of the most engaging film making I've ever seen. I was so fascinated with the whole atmosphere Wright creates with the costume design, setting, lighting etc. However, I don't think the second half is as strong but that could be due to the whole deconstruction of the world that we find so dazzling in the beginning.
You desperately need to watch more movies. If that was impressive to you....wow.
Yay! New update from cool movie guy!
Karsten every month: So I rewatched Over The Garden Wall............
karsten's thoughts on irma vep are my exactly thoughts about titane
Definitely get round to watching No Time To Die, it's basically the ideal action movie for me
It's annoying because I really wanna see most of these big releases but they aren't coming out for a while in my country

Thank god I wasn’t alone on my opinion on Last Night in Soho
3 HK (The Boxer’s Omen), arthouse (Possession), and some more SOV (Feeders, Maleficia, Boardinghouse, Bloodstream, Cannibal Cult, etc) It was a good month.
yay halloween upload!!!
please watch maid!! so good
awesome!! i can't wait to watch french dispatch 😍
it's my impression or karsten is more and more enjoying movies?
i mean, look at the amount of movies he watched this month
and he liked almost all of them
that's cool
My october:
Run Lola Run
KIll Bill
Kill Bill 2
Hellraiser
Noroi: The Curse
Re-Animator
Spoorloos
Savageland
Dune
I've seen so many movies and love too many movies throughout my life but if I had to just pick one. Kill Bill would be my favorite movie in the universe
What I watched this month
No Time to Die- 5/5. What an incredible sendoff for Craig’s Bond.
Dune- 6/5. An epic in every sense of the word. Everything, from the set and costume design to the cinematography to the score to the acting was pitch perfect. Can’t wait for Part 2
Last Night In SoHo- 4/5 or 4.5/5 (I haven’t fully decided).
I haven't rated a film 10/10 in 6 months and this guy has 10 in a month
Yeah it devalues them for sure
@@Y.d.o.b.o.n Who cares
