Petrol vs electric let’s gooo!
We’ve got our hands on a V8-powered Mustang, and it’s about to go head-to-head against the Mustang Mach-E GT to see which of these Fords is quicker over the quarter-mile.
Interestingly, the V8 Mustang has a slight tune, and as a result, the power output is almost identical to the Mach-E GT, with the 5-litre V8 producing 490hp and 530Nm of torque.
In comparison, the Mustang Mach-E GT is powered by two electric motors which combine to produce 487hp, although torque is way up at 860Nm. However, that’s not all that’s up - the Mach-E tips the scales at a whopping 2,200kg, while the petrol-powered Mustang sits at 1,740kg.
So how will this play out - will the Mach-E triumph over the quarter-mile, or will the V8 snatch the win? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

The Mach-E GT actually has a power limiter after 5 seconds to save range even in the "unbridled' mode....It gives me peace to see the v8 win

That makes me feel like Ford was cheap on some component and it is probably overheating after 5 seconds and that is why they limit the power.

Reason why the Mach E gets dropped like that in roll race is I've heard its got a limiter that automatically cuts power when you floor it too long. Think it's just cause Ford is still figuring out the drive train and motors to take the power and be reliable

Also a lot of EVs just start dying rapidly after about 70-90.
It's a people carrier crossover, It's not meant to be put on a track, why they called it a mustang gt is beyond me?

Ford needs to remove the power limiter for the vehicle to go 1/4 runs. Limiting full power after 5 seconds kills it.

I don't think the intended audience for a Mustang Mach-E are people who go to the track or drag strips.
They do this so that the vehicles range holds up over time. They said if they would have done that the mach-e's battery life would not be good over the span over 8 (I think) years.
No the limiter is to prevent battery over heating, has nothing to do with range. How many times does that have to be said?
Then how is tesla able to keep pulling all the way up to a higher top speed and last over 8 years? Ford sux

It's just because they aren't geared for top speeds. If they had a second gear like the Taycan or were geared for it like the Plaid then it's different. On the road, with speed limits, who cares?
I actually saw a video with a stock GT and it was much closer on top end
That wall comes after 5 seconds with full power being limited to only 5 seconds on Mach Es

Love to see a manual car drag race. Lotus evora GT (GT430), Porsche GT4 & GT3 + whatever else you can find… throwing in a f40 would be interesting. Comparing a old supercar to almost entry level sports cars.

We raced my 21 Mach e GT Performance Edition against my 21 Shelby GT500 at Tulsa dragway 38°C air temp 54°C track temp. Mach e GT won 1st race 12.64 vs Shelby 12.80 spun through 4th gear. Shelby ran a 12.03 and 11.71 and the mach e Gt also ran quicker each pass: 12.56 & 12.48. Mach e has 10.5" wheels 295 35 21s on the rear...
You need to test the Ford GT in a drag race

@@peter-coates I drive a 2.0 turbo 1 series BMW it cost me £90 to fill my petrol tank, if I had to use it to commute to and from work it'd last a week and thats with no launching or standing quarter mile runs 😆

At 1:31 you should add a section that says "Running costs per year" that includes gas/electricity, oil changes, blinker fluid (hihi) and stuff like that over 5 years. Because right now the Mustang Mach-E seems like a silly expensive car, but it's actually not, when you compare it over 5 years of ownership.
It'd be cool if yall could do a Acura Type S race. Get all the Type S cars that you can. I remember yall did something similar with Type R cars
One sad thing about the clips, is that they often look out of sync. And from within the clips are often of poor quality, and do not seem to match the clips filmed from the outside. A little more realtime sync would have looked better.

It's interesting to note the increase of the number of gears over the decades for automatics, from 6 to now 10 where 8-10 are Overdrives and 7th is still a 1:1 ratio. Even though the automatics have gotten faster, they have more gears to downshift from. Unless its a DTC or CvK's Lightspeed Transmission. "It downshifted from 7th to 2nd" Used to have a 5 count between WOT and movement in the R35 sluggish auto and turbo lag
The mach e gt only gives you full power for 5 or so seconds. Then goes into a normal mach e mode. That's why 487hp runs such a slow time. Their trap speeds are crap.
Mach E basically jumped every start, brake lights were out before her hands were down, Mustang GT waited for her hands to be completely down before leaving, while still making every race close if not a win. No replacement for good old V8 power in this race.

Hi Matt, just curious though, could you try downshifts while braking hard, maybe that engine braking might improve the stopping distance (for Normal Combustion engines )
It's a not a manual, what u described is how u lose a Transmission lmao cause u have to change gears as fast as the car slows down, if you do too slow or fast, you're just messing up the Trans, cause u can easily go down too many gears and get fucked lol

Downshifting, without accelerating already slows the car down (engine braking) - i doubt you'll wanna time downshifts in an emergency braking situation..... All in all there still are a lota variables to work with - Tyre temperature, Tyre Sepc(all season, track, offroad), body mass of the vehicle, current level of the brake pads, list goes on and on..

Just bought the GT and love it! Coming from a Mclaren 650s and Ferrari 458. (All great cars in their own respect)

The mach-e gt should be in the mid-12 second range in the quarter. Something is off with this mach-e at 13.2. There's no mention of state of charge or which driving mode is used during the races.

You call that little HP from a big engine? Good joke. I own a 1990 Chevrolet Caprice with a 5 liter V8, which has 170 HP. Cadillac in the 1970s even had 8.2 liter V8 engines with just 190 HP. That's what i call little HP from a big engine.

For a naturally aspirated engine, 490hp is actually very good. Around 100hp per litre is more than satisfactory for a N/A engine.

Ya jumped twice. As for the GT it should be quicker so no it’s either tires or drivers,,,maybe both. You didn’t mention what mode the GT was in,,,,sport, track or drag race?
As for the Emach, it’s full power is limited for 5 seconds. Would be nice to see if you can program that limit out.
