My dad did 2 tours in Vietnam- in 66-67 as an ARVN advisor, then in 68-69 with the 101st. 30 years later in 1999 as an ROTC cadet I was able to catch a ride on a Virgina ARNG UH-1 from Fort AP Hill to a University of Richmond athletic field. One of the most memorable helo rides of my life.

When seeing Huey & hearing the sound of Huey , it reminds me about those old days flying with American troops to the combat zones. I had a chance to take a trip from Ai Tu Air field to Sarge fire base near Khe Sanh with one of the American team advisor back in 1972 , this fire base was occupied by one of South VN Marine unit , luckily we got the oder to fly back Dong Ha in the evening otherwise we would have been hit with 122 mm rockets launched by the NVA that night . I would like to say thanks & appreciations to all American service members who had served in VN to help us defend the South . The result was disappointed but will never forget your contributions.

As a former Huey Crew Chief, I would just to like to say this video is BO-RING! I was in Medevac, VIP, Ash/Trash and Troop Lift units. Never did I need to spend more than 60 seconds on start-up checks; EVERYTHING was already verified on the last flight's daily or current day's Preflight.
Good copy there... Have also taken off evac to a hot range with the fcu not wired down and hit 180 kts in a hard bank. But we don't talk about that shit...
My Dad and his brother both served USMC 1966 my dad did short runway launch and recover with the F4 and my uncle was a crew chief on the on the 46 and piloted a Huey. Thank you for your service.
In my unit in RVN, we flew without the cabin doors and often times even the cargo doors were removed. . I mostly flew D models but later in my tour we began to get H models. They were a big improvement in power and lift capability..
What is the inspection panel used for at start up? Or... What are the two guys outside looking for or doing while it starts up? They appear to use some instrument ...my guess is monitoring the temperatures or watching for a hot start?
@@MsTheCops He's looking at the engine from that panel.. It's spring loaded in the closed position.. The engine oil tank is also visible from that side.. That crewman is making a big mistake in the manner of his inspection.. Someone inside the cargo bay could slide that cargo door to the rear while the crewman was holding the inspection panel open, severing his fingers.. We would press our right forearms against the rear of the cargo door to feel if it was being opened and if so we would get out fingers off that inspection panel.. The crewmen are looking for an engine fire.. On the left side, they can see the fuel control.. Most likely he is holding a fire extinguisher in his hands.. It looks a bit small but it is red..
@@barsoom43 Hey ...thanks for the prompt reply. I see what you mean with the door. On another video concerning a SAR UH-1 ...the crewman was pointing an instrument into the panel that was tethered in the cargo bay via a curly cable ...where he returned it after starting up. Do you still fly?
@@MsTheCops No, I am retired.. I flew for the Army for 30 years, active but mostly reserves.. While a reservist, I also flew as an air ambulance pilot- B206, BK117, EC145.. That EC145 was the finest helicopter I ever flew but the UH-1 holds a special place in my heart.. I have 13K flying hours over 43 years with 1100 combat in the Huey.. I arrived in the combat zone at age 19 and left 11 months later for the hospital in Okinawa due to injuries from a power turbine failure coming out of a hole in the jungle.

I held a PPL in Canada ...got all of 36 hours on my old logbook in a Piper Tomahawk ...they were popular trainers long ago. Flying was an expensive hobby ...so I did some gliding. But work, houses, cars & life took up all the time I had. So flying is a dream that never came true for me.
I’ve only seen these wonderful helicopters in movies or videos I wasn’t around in he 70s when these were popular but I know they were the most durable helicopters out there maybe someday I’ll see one up close what a wonderful peice of aviation history

*Better" is a subjective term. No doubt the many different permutations of the Bell is the most successful helo ever. I used to drive Bell 212, I'd say it's got one thing making it "better" than a Huey. But with "workhorse" aircrafts, there really isn't much scope for making them better than they were.in the 60's. Aerodynamics and the forces of nature are the parameters for the designs, and has not changed. That's why the Bell, Charlie-130 & the Cessna Skyhawk still looks like they did in the 60's, and they are all the most successful aircrafts in their particular field. But none of them can be declared best.
The us equivalent of the British spitfire from ww2. Both are beautiful functional and dashing aircraft that have captured the imagination and hearts of the world. Superb Huey ❤
Dude the thump of a 2 blade huey never gets old to me. The 4 bladed ones just dont have the same sound. That deep "thwomp thwomp" you feel in your chest!

Remember on the prop aircraft upon exit, jump up a foot, out 3, on jets pretty much just get sucked out, I always had such a heavy pack I just fell out, never tried for proper exit, elbow tucked in etc, saw many a rivets along the side of the bird as I zipped by, risers were always twisted, time to bicycle, lol. Did the 123 Provider at jump school and back at Bragg on Saturdays "set up for pay hurts" at Sicily DZ, you could go get in hollywood jumps, build up jump count in your log book. Tailgating the 123, those were fun, Up n outs. Never did a chinook, was that similiar to other tailgates, normal static line and exits or extra long for them too? Ha, fools and birdshit, have not heard that one in a minute, gave me a chuckle. You a Marine? If yes, remember having you guys in our Army jump school. Remember at morning formation inspection a marine got a gig for jacked up boots, drop knock out 20. The two adjacent to him both looked at the Company NCOIC, "I was the Platoon Sgt (E-6 going through school), so I was watching the whole thing, they looked at us, then both intentionally drug their heels across the toes of their boots automatic gig, both dropped, all 3 were doing pushups together. That always stuck with me, like F U, we are Marines, in this together. Take care brother...13F3P, "Check can of peas!"", drop and knock em out, listen uppp! To much fun and seriousness.

Volunteered for airborne and then for rigger school (FT Lee Virginia). Then off to Okinawa. 549th Quartermaster unit. They had the marines out there loudly running around the fort early in the morning. I think the Chinook was marine. It was like a 14 month vacation. Did a lot of jumps and practice air drops. Never saw anyone who had been to nam. Talked to an army colonel after one jump. Man I landed like a sack of shit he said.

So yuou were an M.P. but the got airborne qualified, went to rigger school. So you final job slot was what M.P. A S.F. procurement team showed up at my army base in Korea (Camp Stanley), I apples a couple three months letter arrived, congrats you hav ebeen selected to attend Special warefare school at Ft. Bragg. Once I got the, I was in a critical shortage MOS (13F3P) and artillery branch refused to release me to go S.F. Q-Course. Next thing I knew, being a leg, I was getting orders for Ft. Polk. I never heard ANYTHING good about that place. I asked how I could stay here at Bragg, the NCOIC pointed to a door on the 2nd floor, says you see that door that says "Airborne Procurement" report in the and voulunteer to go Airborne, I did, got sent to Benning when I had a class date and eventually returned to my unit at Bragg with wings as a 13F3P). Funny I was a leg SSG (13F30). in charge of a squad of airborne 13F's, there was some resentment as one could imagine. But once they saw I was a competent NCO, we got along just fine. Go to shoot the shit with your Airborne brother!!
I love it. I am used to this machine for many botanical field excursions in the jungles of Brunei. They used the one with double engines. Great flying experience over jungles, river valleys and mountain tops. Great machine. I was on the Black Hawk as well. Awesome. But the one I enjoyed most was the Volco. Really superb.

I flew in one of these bad boys at Whistler heliskiing for one of the most memorable times of my life. The sound of the the silence in the backcountry being pierced by the rising volume of the twin blades as it approached was unforgettable 🚁
Im an old 82nd Airborne Paratrooper. I made a jump from A UH-1H at Ft Bragg NC, Sicily Drop Zone. Unbelievable!!!! It was fantastic having your feet dangle off the edge of the door bay. There are 2 Sounds in this world that are UNMISTAKABLE: 1) The racking of a Pump 12 Gauge Shotgun, and 2)..... THE HUEY!!!😇❤️😇❤️😇❤️😇
I was fortunate to have several hundred jumpers, not all at once, jump from Huey's I was flying during my career. For the pilot, when all would jump at the same time, the aircraft would rise up significantly, but we had to also make sure not to over compensate and settle down into a jumper.
I spent 7+ years in the UH-1. There are other helicopters faster, with more flight endurance, can give a more comfortable ride, offer better crash "resistance", but none are, all things considered, "better" than the Huey.

We did a lot of helicopter insertion / extractions down in Panama (77-79 B 3/5 193rd Inf. Bde.). Those ended up being the fondest days of my 9 years in the US Army. Never knew it then but the Huey rides were coming to an end as the Black Hawks started showing up. To this day I get misty eyed when I hear a Huey inbound or doing a fly by. The forest service was just using 1 on a fire here in Utah. I now have 3 videos of it coming and going. Just something about that sound and what went with it back in the day. Jumping off of them with your alice pack, blaster and getting off the lz and setting up a perimeter. We even did the Stabo rig, 3 of us suspended side by side under the Huey with the end guys having their outside arm outstretched to stop us from spinning. Then we would be flown out over the pacific for about 10 min. then returned back to the jungle training site. God I miss those days. Recently started drinking from my 2 qt. canteen again just for the plastic taste. It too is a memory. Did you ever give thought that you had taken your last canteen drink? I yearn for some return of those nasty, prickly heat, mosquito infested, black palm days and at least this I can control, a simple little canteen, take a drink with your eyes closed and for 1-100,00th of a second I'm back in the jungle. Hard to believe I have been out for 35 years, OMG, I was in for 09 years 73-83 and did not understand those memories would haunt me as the greatest days of my life. No one out here has your back like your buddies had it. Live on Huey, live on you big bad bird!!

When I hear the sound of this helicopter it reminds me of my youth when I was a parachutist and we jumped from these helicopters in Venezuela when this country was a democracy in the seventies and I will never forget the sound of these helicopter blades. some pleasant memories of this time.
In my 30 year Army career, beginning in 1969, I logged several hundred hours in a UH-1 (numerous models). I had the misfortune to ride one into the ground, but the good fortune to walk away with the crew. What an airframe.
I had the honor to ride in one of these last week thanks to Friends of The US Army Aviation over Gulf Shores Alabama(with the doors wide open I may add). I can't describe how incredible it was, I don't think my blood has ever pumped so much dopamine as I had being inside and feeling the vibration of the engines winding up from idle to lift us off the ground. Just outside my work the coast guard runs drills with the Blackhawks, while the Blackhawk is an amazing machine as well, it's got nothing on the sound of the Huey, that ride will be a standout memory of mine for the rest of my life
This video made the hair on my arms stand up. I was a door gunner on one these during the Vietnam war and the only thing missing is the smell of JP4 fuel burning. JOB WELL DONE.

Dude the thump of a 2 blade huey never gets old to me. The 4 bladed ones just dont have the same sound. That deep "thwomp thwomp" you feel in your chest!

Remember on the prop aircraft upon exit, jump up a foot, out 3, on jets pretty much just get sucked out, I always had such a heavy pack I just fell out, never tried for proper exit, elbow tucked in etc, saw many a rivets along the side of the bird as I zipped by, risers were always twisted, time to bicycle, lol. Did the 123 Provider at jump school and back at Bragg on Saturdays "set up for pay hurts" at Sicily DZ, you could go get in hollywood jumps, build up jump count in your log book. Tailgating the 123, those were fun, Up n outs. Never did a chinook, was that similiar to other tailgates, normal static line and exits or extra long for them too? Ha, fools and birdshit, have not heard that one in a minute, gave me a chuckle. You a Marine? If yes, remember having you guys in our Army jump school. Remember at morning formation inspection a marine got a gig for jacked up boots, drop knock out 20. The two adjacent to him both looked at the Company NCOIC, "I was the Platoon Sgt (E-6 going through school), so I was watching the whole thing, they looked at us, then both intentionally drug their heels across the toes of their boots automatic gig, both dropped, all 3 were doing pushups together. MP skool (Ft Gordon). Volunteered for airborne and then for rigger school (FT Lee Virginia). Then off to Okinawa. 549th Quartermaster unit.
They had the marines out there loudly running around the fort early in the morning. I think the Chinook was marine.
It was like a 14 month vacation. Did a lot of jumps and practice air drops. Never saw anyone who had been to nam.

I volunteered to go Airborne too. A S.F. procurement team showed up at my army base in Korea (Camp Stanley), I apples a couple three months letter arrived, congrats you hav ebeen selected to attend Special warefare school at Ft. Bragg. Once I got the, I was in a critical shortage MOS (13F3P) and artillery branch refused to release me to go S.F. Q-Course. Next thing I knew, being a leg, I was getting orders for Ft. Polk. I never heard ANYTHING good about that place. I asked how I could stay here at Bragg, the NCOIC pointed to a door on the 2nd floor, says you see that door that says "Airborne Procurement" report in the and voulunteer to go Airborne, I did, got sent to Benning when I had a class date and eventually returned to my unit at Bragg with wings as a 13F3P). Funny I was a leg SSG (13F30). in charge of a squad of airborne 13F's, there was some resentment as one could imagine. But once they saw I was a competent NCO, we got along just fine.

I love it. I am used to this machine for many botanical field excursions in the jungles of Brunei. They used the one with double engines. Great flying experience over jungles, river valleys and mountain tops. Great machine. I was on the Black Hawk as well. Awesome. But the one I enjoyed most was the Volco. Really superb.

Amazing takeoff I love this kind of beast not too fancy but simple I want to be a owner of one in the future I'm going to had another before takeoff to fight school this is my passion my love for aviation I'm now doing studies I can start it whenever I want it was a gift that was given to me that's part of my blessing .
Used to live near an airbase as a child, the sound of these and the Harvards are like old friends when I hear them today

I flew in one of these bad boys at Whistler heliskiing for one of the most memorable times of my life. The sound of the the silence in the backcountry being pierced by the rising volume of the twin blades as it approached was unforgettable 🚁
Im an old 82nd Airborne Paratrooper. I made a jump from A UH-1H at Ft Bragg NC, Sicily Drop Zone. Unbelievable!!!! It was fantastic having your feet dangle off the edge of the door bay.
There are 2 Sounds in this world that are UNMISTAKABLE: 1) The racking of a Pump 12 Gauge Shotgun, and 2)..... THE HUEY!!!😇❤️😇❤️😇❤️😇
I was fortunate to have several hundred jumpers, not all at once, jump from Huey's I was flying during my career. For the pilot, when all would jump at the same time, the aircraft would rise up significantly, but we had to also make sure not to over compensate and settle down into a jumper.
I spent 7+ years in the UH-1. There are other helicopters faster, with more flight endurance, can give a more comfortable ride, offer better crash "resistance", but none are, all things considered, "better" than the Huey.
I mean, the Bell 212, 412, UH-1Y, Mi-8/17 family, Aérospatiale Puma/Oryx/Super Puma/Cougar family **are** in every conceivable way...

come to florida. The forestry service only use the Huey for all forest fires using a bambi bucket. When they fly within a few miles of my house I always go out and watch them fly by. I always recognize that throaty engine sound from 21 years with them

We did a lot of helicopter insertion / extractions down in Panama (77-79 B 3/5 193rd Inf. Bde.). Those ended up being the fondest days of my 9 years in the US Army. Never knew it then but the Huey rides were coming to an end as the Black Hawks started showing up. To this day I get misty eyed when I hear a Huey inbound or doing a fly by. The forest service was just using 1 on a fire here in Utah. I now have 3 videos of it coming and going. Just something about that sound and what went with it back in the day. Jumping off of them with your alice pack, blaster and getting off the lz and setting up a perimeter. We even did the Stabo rig, 3 of us suspended side by side under the Huey with the end guys having their outside arm outstretched to stop us from spinning. Then we would be flown out over the pacific for about 10 min. then returned back to the jungle training site. God I miss those days. Recently started drinking from my 2 qt. canteen again just for the plastic taste. It too is a memory. Did you ever give thought that you had taken your last canteen drink? I yearn for some return of those nasty, prickly heat, mosquito infested, black palm days and at least this I can control, a simple little canteen, take a drink with your eyes closed and for 1-100,00th of a second I'm back in the jungle. Hard to believe I have been out for 35 years, OMG, I was in for 09 years 73-83 and did not understand those memories would haunt me as the greatest days of my life. No one out here has your back like your buddies had it. Live on Huey, live on you big bad bird!!

When I hear the sound of this helicopter it reminds me of my youth when I was a parachutist and we jumped from these helicopters in Venezuela when this country was a democracy in the seventies and I will never forget the sound of these helicopter blades. some pleasant memories of this time.

In my 30 year Army career, beginning in 1969, I logged several hundred hours in a UH-1 (numerous models). I had the misfortune to ride one into the ground, but the good fortune to walk away with the crew. What an airframe.

I had the honor to ride in one of these last week thanks to Friends of The US Army Aviation over Gulf Shores Alabama(with the doors wide open I may add). I can't describe how incredible it was, I don't think my blood has ever pumped so much dopamine as I had being inside and feeling the vibration of the engines winding up from idle to lift us off the ground.
Just outside my work the coast guard runs drills with the Blackhawks, while the Blackhawk is an amazing machine as well, it's got nothing on the sound of the Huey, that ride will be a standout memory of mine for the rest of my life
