  • One thing I love about sewing, is the community of beautiful sewing artists that define it. When I was told about The Quilting Marine, and what he was trying to do, it put a smile on my face.
Not only is he teaching people how to quilt, but he's highlighting the power of quilting to help alleviate stress, fight off some effects of PTSD, all while fostering a sense of community around a simple needle and thread.
I tip my hat to the man, and I've decided to sew my first quilt block (imperfect as it may be), and send it off for him to add to his community quilt.

You trimmed off all of your back tacks!
Glad I found your channel, I learned to hand sew in the boy scouts, it came in handy when I was in the Army...
My great-grandmother was a hooker (croche!) and my grandmother knitted and sewed...
They taught me to say the Rosary in French, but apparently knitting, croche, and sewing were not things boys did...
In college I had a girlfriend who was into sewing and she taught me a lot. My (soon to be ex) wife had a computerized Singer starter machine she was going to sell at a yard sale until I told her i wanted it... I used it to hem our curtains and kid clothes, I made a lunch bag and some other things... My dad is an iron worker and goes through jeans pretty regularly, I've been collecting his old jeans to use to make a quilt.
I've bough a Singer HD to replace the machine my wife took and when I move to my new place and set the machine up, I'm going to teach myself to sew from a pattern....

I followed Mark’s project as well. What a wonderful effort. I also made a block and will be uploading a 2 part video on that. I’ve been playing with the sewing machine since I was little. I grew up in a very small house where my Mom’s sewing machine was never 12 feet away. Lol. I’m a retired elementary educator so I’ve been told I know a little of everything and a lot of nothing. That applies to my sewing as well. Just nice to know there are other male sewers willing to ‘come out’. Keep preaching!

How did I miss this video when it was first posted? I'm a Quilting Marine fan, and a M*A*S*H fan. After watching this I might have to rewatch some M*A*S*H reruns. I have the complete series on DVD.

Yeah, I picked a really difficult material combination for my first try - why make it easy? hahaha I will DEFINITELY try a full quilt soon.
