  • Picked up a seized Ford Mustang engine project a year or so ago, in this video we carry out a engine teardown on the Ford Mustang engine and look into why this 170 six cylinder engine has seized. The seized 170 six cylinder engine was pulled from a Ford Mustang which came into the UK many years ago. The owner of the Mustang told me it was working fine in the US, once it arrived in the UK he pulled it and fitted a V8. Claimed over the years while stored in his barn it had seized.
This was sold a 200 FORD Mustang engine, that's what he was told when he purchased the Mustang. After a little research, its a 1961 170 engine which left the factory in a FORD Falcon. It is still a 1960's FORD engine, and a pleasure to work on.
Starting this project, anticipated seized piston rings, rod bearing issues and possible stuck lifters, could it be something else?

I have a 170 in my 1963 Ford Fairlane. Runs fine. Good to see what it looks like inside. Thank you. Hope you get this one running.

I just bought a spare L6 for parts and to practice on. Picked it up for $80 here in the USA. I’m an UK expat living in the USA.
    I have a 1966 Fastback.

That's maybe £60 in the UK - not get much for that over here, must be nice to be able to pop to your local parts store and have access to classic parts

@@FIXitBUILDitGARAGE Man, I never even thought about how bad it'd be trying to get parts for an American car out there. Technically an import for ya

It looked like water came out then a small amount of atf, meaning It had been stored mostly empty for who knows how long and probably got rained on. There is a place in Redding California called "The Damper Doctor" who rebuilds harmonic balancers. I have used him many times and highly recommend if the shipping to and from is worth it.

The falcon 170 was in sooo many mustangs. The crank has 6 main bearings if there are 5 freeze plugs and 4 main bearings if there are 3 freeze plugs, yours is a four main block.

Don't ever knock pistons out with steel punch . Use wood .if the crank is still good , it would make good rebuilt

What happened to the engine? I have a 62 Fairlane with original 170 still in it. And knowing how rare they are here in the UK ( north east) could do with some spare parts if they’re available.

Certain your right about the escalating cost of parts in the UK for this engine. A 170 c.i.d., plant is anything but desired, though a owner of a Falcon or Fairlane that was stock with a 170 might think twice about using it. If the crank were sound, and the offending rod and piston could be found cheaply the rest might be cleaned, new main and rod bearings installed. There would be only to hone and re-ring after a head inspection and valve lapping. This might have had a Carter YB-A single barrel carb originally, as Holley weren't offered on any of The mile-maker engines.

I agree, if you had a falcon of Fairlane with a stock power plant, it could be used for sure, maybe even a donor engine. Didn't know the Holley was not stock, good to know

Are you sure? I had a 63 1/2 Falcon Futura with a 170 and 3-on-the-tree and it had a 1 bbl Holley. The car was purchased new by my brother and handed down to me. He certainly didn’t have enough money to do any modifications.

Well... im going to re do a 170. What have you decided to do?

Your not doin anything wrong. But dont run it without full rebuild keep lifters in order maybe all ya need is pistons rings and bearing. And a full build could be machine crank and rods and bore block. Its a good core
