    The game originally allowed you to save mid missions, but the feature was removed because it made the game too easy and during the testing some people could complete it in under 4 hours.

      Exactly. And I really enjoyed the challenge and mission variety in the original. I even liked the random elements and the fact of having to hide bodies in rooms people don't go into makes sense to me...seems more realistic.

      How can an optional feature make something too easy? Some levels are unnecessarily frustrating because of the lack of it if you consider the "broken" mechanics.

    You know as frustrating and confusing the game feels at times I really still cant help but like it. Playing through this game is such an interesting experience.
    The game sets up a nice foundation that future games will expand on, while most of the missions dont feel very hitman those rare few like the Hong Kong resturant and the hotel assasionation really made me smile when I played them. Knowing that these missions are what hitman would eventually evolve into really makes me appreaciate this game even more.
    Codename 47, Silent assasin and Blood money. This trio of games is one of the best evolutions of a franchise Ive ever seen. The first is a heavily flawed game that lays some very important foundation and gameplay that is buried amongst a huge pile of problems.
    The second takes the best elements of the first, improves it and gets rid of most of the major flaws of the first.
    And the third one takes all that previous knowledge and uses it to perfect the formula.

    Trust me, nobody who just got done with Absolution would be surprised at having to go loud, with how broken the stealth mechanics are. Also I gotta say, I love the ending. That little bit of respect Ortmeyer got from 47 as he snaps his neck, giving him a quick death, and then 2 showing how all the events of this game really impacted 47, hating himself for what he'd done. I really miss the dark narrative the series used to have.

      @@vinilima1227 Yeah I like Absolution too. It's a great linear stealth action game, but it isn't as good as a Hitman game. Also Absolution's setting is weird. Definitely interesting to see that dark, grindhouse atmosphere, but I can understand how a lot of people don't like it. Also playing it right after Blood Money felt like a downgrade at times, but Absolution is still a good game imo. It introduced some mechanics we saw in the WoA trilogy and the graphics still hold up and unlike C47, H2: Silent Assasin or in some instances Blood Money (can't speak of Contracts, haven't played that one) it doesn't feel as clunky and dated. Overall, I'd say Absolution would be better received if it wasn't called "Hitman", it just feels like a black sheep of this series.

  • @uuuuNB
    @uuuuNB 2 года назад +3

    I still remember the first time I saw this game as a lil kid. I don't think I've ever been as mindblown by a game (maybe except for when GTA 3 came out, because 3D GTA was like unbelievably sick at the time I can't understate how crazy an open world game like that was at the time!).
    I truly sucked, and I didn't understand english so my little ass had a very difficult time to complete that much of the game. But man was it a sick experience, everything from the atmosphere and the KICK ASS soundtrack made me love the game! I remember the grittiness and darkness of this game really hit me back then, the ruthless malevolent nature of the game and the fact you're not really playing 'the good guy' made it truly special.
    I still remember the way I almost hold my breath IRL when I was trespassing in the game, how scared I was, lmao it was so incredibly intense for my little child brain.
    I mean technically this game is not very good. At all actually. It's clunky and has some very bad level designs some levels. However there was just nothing like it at the time, and the atmosphere was undeniably very heavy and striking, especially when paired with Jesper Kyds phenomenal sound!
    I've tried to replay this game, but it's not very good tbh lol, I would almost rather play absolution than C47 at least some gameplay in Absolution wasn't that bad if it just had some better level design. C47 on the other hand is a mess.
    With that said I actually still believe C47 has some things that's better than in any other game - for instance the godlike main menu theme, why didn't they include this in the rest of the series?! Also I really enjoyed the 'you need to buy equipment you want to bring on the mission' - I'm not a fan of the "you have x amount of slots where you can bring equipment". I really miss the binoculars in the newer trilogy! I also really miss the live map (although I don't remember if that was in C47) and perhaps what I miss the most is the ability to look through keyholes (because I never play with the minimap or instincts (aka cheatermode) in the trilogy, which can be a bit frustrating when you can't see what's on the other side of a door. It really baffles my mind that anyone thought it would be a good idea to remove "looking through keyholes" and just think that wallhack instincts solution is the answer.
    With that said, Hitman trilogy is my favorite of the whole series, simply because they are the best gameplay and level design wise. But it makes me sad that they threw away Jesper Kyds unique style and they moved away from the gritty dark brutal atmosphere of the first 3-4 games, to the more 007 style game we have in the trilogy. It's not bad, but I much prefer the old atmosphere, it is truly what really made the Hitman games so amazing in my mind.
    So far they've been somewhat good at listening to their fans (especially after the disaster that was absolution). So I really hope that if there comes a new Hitman game, that they go back to their roots with a real dark and gritty 18+ game. This is Hitman for christ sake, not James Bond or Mossad Simulator.

    The assassination of Lee Hong was such a pain in the ass, swear to Christ took me years when I was a kid to figure the level out and get through it, especially because if you got made you were fucked and there was no saving.
    No youtube tutorials either, I'm not even sure they existed at the time, but I just kept picking it up out of stubborness. Tbh the rest of the game was a breeze in comparison. And I have to admit I was never able to be half as efficient at hitman 2 as I was on this one, the stealth felt super inneffective (constantly getting made for no apparent reason). And btw, real champs only need the silenced 9 mm haha

      @killer1one1 5 лет назад +16

      I would argue the new games (2016+) undoubtedly have their own feel, although it's very different. Now it's kind of a James Bond meets House of Cards aesthetic with a bigger emphasis on "whacky" humor. It's not as original tho, so I get that. Just hire Jesper Kyd, I don't get it...

    • @VergilHiltsLT
      @VergilHiltsLT 5 лет назад +11

      @@killer1one1 It still lacks the "touches" the previous games had. The levels just were more memorable, because of the layout, little details and visual atmosphere, not just the score by Jesper Kyd. It's like every set of the level had a different "color". Now it's pretty much a realistic killing simulator, feeling less like a game. And most importantly, it's not about 47 as a character anymore, there are bits of him but only in dialogue or the intro cutscenes for 2016. That's why I like the first four games the most, because the games were more or less about him and his origins. A character game, so to speak.

    • @Digamortis
      @Digamortis 5 лет назад +2

      The older games really put you in the mind of 47 in a way. Even though the gameplay is more polished nowadays I miss the old atmosphere. I feel like it's something we can't recapture sadly. I'm getting really nostalgic just remembering the days of Timesplitters and the old Hitman games. On a side note Hitman: Contracts OST will always be my fave. Jesper Kyd really did a great job making it sound dreamlike and sinister at the same time. Love the synth in Streets of Hong Kong.

    2:36 - Those are the two things I miss about the modern Hitman games.
    Making 47 into more of a James Bond type character who saves the world is more commerciably viable I guess, but I prefer the more sombre mood of the old games, where you're like an underworld assassin taking out mobsters for money.
    I also don't like how contextual most kills are now. I prefer to just shoot the target in the head instead of dressing up like a goofy bunny and sabotaging someone's fireworks or whatever. Games are about roleplaying after all, and what I liked about Hitman was the fantasy of actually being a badass assassin.

    • @runi5413
      @runi5413 5 лет назад

      I thought the "new" Hitman games did a pretty good job with it. There's an overarching story told through the cut-scenes, but I think most players kinda just skipped through those anyway. I like how they told individual stories within each episode/level, that made me feel like an assassin who was travelling through that world and picking up information as I went along.

    • @JabPlayz-Gaming
      @JabPlayz-Gaming 4 года назад

      I don't think so every game's purpose is to roleplay. Killing targets in different ways and doing it by wearing many disguise in a open sandbox levels made hitman a badass game in my opinion. Shooting someone in the head is just a typical action movie style way to kill someone. And also it doesn't make you feel like a perfect assassin. And personally i don't want to just live with a fantasy that i am a badass master assasssin i actually want to feel it and thats what newer hitman games did so well it makes you feel like a perfect killing machine. Blood money is my personal favourite. You might assume blood money is my first hitman game it actually isn't. The first ever hitman game i played was hitman codename 47 back when i had a crap pc. Didnt complete it but after few years i truly got into the series (2014) and played all of the games in order. I love blood money because it actually makes me feel like a master assassin and just doesn't leave me with a fantasy. But then again its all about personal taste and opinions so, i totally respect your opinion.

    I decided to make this my first hitman game and oh man it was frustrating. So much to the point where I downloaded a completed save and skipped missions i couldn't stand. But no matter how frustrated I got. I'd always come back. I beat all but 1 mission I ended up liking it overall. I'm so excited for the games to get better and better throughout the series

    For the Colombia missions, the Sniper rifle thing is actually a feature. Normal guards are only allowed to carry AKs, you need to disguise as an officer (the darker uniforms with the yellow stripes) to carry the sniper and machine gun.

    The Hitman series has to have one of the greatest series of soundtracks, I would say up to Absolution. (HITMAN™ has a very minimal and average soundtrack, havent played The last one)
    But in my opinion Codename's OST is The best hands down, it really deserves your attention

    Cvit, don't know if you ever hung out on Hitman2Forum or Hitman2.net, I went by maniac there, was a mod back in the day. I'm a Hitman superfan, and this game was my first, and I beat it maybe 20 different ways. You, sir, are an inspiration. Thank you for the nostalgia. I quite enjoyed Pablo Ochoa missions, a guilty pleasure!

    Glad to find another Big Fan of this series.
    "Traditions of the Trade" is my all-time favorite level in a Hitman game.
    but aside from that, Codename 47 did not age well at all.

    I remember either playing the first one that ever came out or the second one and you’re on like a farm or something and you’re a priest or talking with a priest that’s what I remember my first experience playing the series around like 2003

    It would’ve been really cool if it had a map editor to create your own missions. Say hello to my little friend was also frustrating to get into the lab because you had to have the lighter green uniform. If you didn’t and snuck through the back door before entering you would get alerted even when the door is closed. It would have been cool if they reimagined the Columbia missions like the Rotterdam missions. Waiting 3 minutes for Ivan was always a drag. In the set up you don’t even need to kill the doctor. If you position yourself far enough to reach it and quickly run out, you can leave the level without having the swat team come out. I wish that had more than two ways to kill the red dragon negotiator in the first mission.

    Love the retrospective! I have some comments:
    Gamespot actually gave the game 5.2/10, citing among other things that the jank was so detrimental to the experience that the game as a whole was not enjoyable.
    It's so fun to see that you solved the puzzle on _The Jungle God_ by dragging a body when the intended solution is a pig. Only goes to show the open-ended vein they were going for was still there, buried under obscurity.
    I'd like to note that Gamefaqs was around in 2000 so it was easy to find a guide for the game even back then.

    I really loved the amount of levels we got in silent assassin and the dark rainy atmosphere in contracts.
    I’d be down with a contracts 2, not sure how it’d work but having a darker toned Hitman instead of the ‘wackier’ hitman that we’ve been getting as of late would be a nice change of pace imo.

    9:10 - as far as I remember reproduction of the level in 3rd installment, it was still about planning, but you needed to include information gathering from NPCs into your plan, which added extra variety to the game.

    I think the soundtrack to codename 47 was way ahead of it's time compared to blood money, my reason being blood money soundtrack was very repetitive for every mission and codename 47 wasn't! Even silent assassin was brilliant because it lacked repetitiveness and each mission had its own unique song!

    2:43 I disagree with you on that; when I originally played this game as a kid, the fact that you spend the first 3 missions doing all that manipulation and trickery to cause a war between the two biggest Triad gangs in Hong Kong, AND get the police pissed off at both of them, _just_ so you can get a crack at assassinating one of the most powerful men in the city's underworld? That all really sold me the notion that 47 isn't just some low-rent mob thug like Jules and Vincent from Pulp Fiction; he's a professional, world-class, mythical assassin who can pull off unthinkable kills, like The Jackal or Golgo 13. Just one hit of his sent shockwaves through Hong Kong's organized crime world that will be felt for a generation at least. For the Triads, Lee Hong's assassination was a life-changing event, a turning point in their history. For 47, it was Tuesday.

    As a kid I always wondered why the first hitman wasn't on console but never realized this was the first developed game for io, love the atmosphere for this game I can see where contracts pick it up from not to mention the levels that were later on remade for contracts still hold up in terms of level design. My only complaint is the fiber wire sucks in this game.

  • @pegasisvera
    @pegasisvera 4 года назад +1

    8:04 Just uh... just want to mention that the Fiber Wire's animation is completely skippable (and was previously shown in the video as happening). One of the easiest ways that I know of is to simply take the enemy's disguise while you're strangling them. Unless you were referring to the victim's animation which... alright, you win. :D

    I believe people that shet on this game are zoomers that never played them in their era, they just find out of the Hitman franchise and played the newer games and then try to play the first ones and obviously the controls are clunky, graphics are off and they don't like it.
    But this was amazing in the 2000. Having the tie flying while runnin, plant leaves to slide if you pass thru, breakable vases or lights, that was incredible at that time. Hitman 1 sold more than half of million copies and that was really good at that time. It didn't aged well, but it was a great game at that time.
