I've got a tenth of your collection, but I'm out every week buying DVDs and even rare VHS. My friends are always on me about the worthlessness of DVDs. They're into the streaming and the Ice films. But I love the physical disc. I love having a constant cache of films in my home that I haven't seen and I'm excited to see. You guys, Cooldude and Wetmovie1, inspire me to keep the collection going. Thanks for your videos. You're not the only dvd geeks out there.

Also, the virtual reality thing made me remember something. A year or so ago I read that some company in Japan is working on something called the Immersive Cocoon that's supposedly going to be kind of similar to the holodeck from Star Trek. I haven't heard anything else about it but it might be interesting to look up and read about.

This is why I am of the position that the Mom and Pop stores will make a comeback. The major movie sellers i.e. Blockbuster, Suncoast, FYE, ect. will shut down to accommodate for the streaming wave, but the locally owned shops that specialize in selling old formats will pull the customers that want to keep purchasing the tangible product.
There is a shop near my house called Edward McKay's used books and more. I exclusively shop there for movies. Can't get any better than a special ed. for $3.

Blu-rays and movies will be around or as long as consumers buy them en masse. Blu-rays especially will last because the hard core movie fans want the extras, the ability to collect, and the ability to "show" their collection. Streaming is like renting. That's why the rental market (e.g. Blockbuster) went out but sales are still good. ITunes has digital copies now and they have not put sales of blu-rays out of business for reasons I mentioned above.

Im older - I remember when Cable TV was new! In 1977-78 when we got cable, it was at the point where the OTHER side of the street had cable first and we had to wait a year until it came down the street and down to our side of the street!!!!

I pray to Kubrick that the era of DVDs or blu-rays will never end. I really enjoy all the special features that they come with on video and to wait for every other movie to be re-released on a software to download would be unfair.

It's sad that everything is trying to go digital and I think it all will in about 10 years from now. I grew up in the video generation as well. I still remember going to Block Buster every weekend and picking up my favorite movies on VHS. Then DVDs came around and I made a huge mistake by getting rid of our entire VHS collection just because DVDs were new back then. I know now that I won't ever get rid of my favorite DVDs in my collection. I will support DVDs and Blu-Rays for as long as I can.

I dont think that physical copies of movies will ever die out. There are still a large amount of people that like to go out and get the physical copy of the movie. When it does eventually die out, which I dont think will be for many many years, it will become sort of like record collecting or laserdisc collecting

I'm not a DVD collector (despite enjoying Shawn's videos) but where CDs are concerned, in the past 10 or so years I've only purchased probably a total of 5 CDs. Most of the time I only like a couple of songs on any given CD anyway so I like the option of buying per song. I love not having the extra clutter, too.

I would have to say it is tempting to buy a "virtual file" of a DVD that is now out-of-print and the sellers jacking the price up to $50+, while I can go on Amazon and buy the movie for $10 and watch instantly without having to worry if that $50 DVD I just bought will play or not. It really isn't a bothersome since most of us have PCs hooked up to televisions anyway, but I would rather have a physical copy of the disc to add to my collection.

In my opinion, the big problem (at least for me) isn't so much streaming or the death of the physical format. My problem is: IF the physical format dies, how do we convert the material on the disc (main movie, menus, extras) to streaming? If someone can invent a quick, convenient, one step process to do that, I think a lot of my anxieties (and those of a lot of other people) will be solved.

The machine you were describing that 'scans' the Blu Rays and DVDs you have, is literally the same concept of digital copies that come with Blu Rays. I think digital copies will dominate the market, because you have services like Apple's iCloud that places your digital items on all your devices. Digital Copies are the future.

I totally agree with your points here guys
I really hope DVD's and Blurays don’t die out, cause as a movie lover and collector, it’s just not the same seeing a movie/show streamed as opposed to owning the physical object and popping it into a DVD player
Plus, if something were to happen to the streaming services, like their servers going down or something happening to their databases… guess what, no one would be able to watch anything
So I’m keeping my movie collection, cause I love it

I believe the physical disc (or other) based medium will live on for a very long time. There are always people who like to collect physical things.
I'll stream things but I do buy many films, games, books etc and I don't get rid of them afterwards. It's just nice to have the physical item, what happens when your entertainment cloud company gets shut down or bankrupt and then all stored data and account info is destroyed.

I loooove collecting DVD's and Blu-Ray's but it almost feels redundant and a waste of money getting them now due to streaming. I use Apple TV for most of my movies now and Netflix. I'm hoping when illegal downloading gets put to a stop and people realize with online you get no features and that true movie feel, home media will make a comeback.

With cable services capping download speeds and charging extra if you go over your allotted amount is a big reason DVDs and Blu-rays are going to stick around for the foreseeable future.
The other reason is that people like to physically be able to touch and hold what they own. However stores like Best Buy are going to go the way of Borders.

  • @DeanOfDVD

You still see music CDs for sale because audiophiles want the quality of the CD versus the lower quality of digital music (unless lossless). Also people collect the CDs just like they do blu-ray movies. I think you guys are missing it.

ya, i'd say almost everything with be digital in 5 years. they could definitely make it sooner but im sure they will want people to buy as many blu rays as possible within that time. it's hard to think that people wouldn't want to buy blu rays and go completely digital, people like to have physical collections.

  • @CaneFu

DVD and Blu Rays have just been given an extended life and may be around for a very long time now! Comcast and other huge greedy internet providers are in the process of introducing bandwidth caps for subscribers of 250-300 GB per month. Since streaming just one HD movie can burn up as much as 5 GB and using Skype video chat will burn one GB an hour it's pretty easy to use up 300 GB in one month. This will mean a resurgence of DVD and Blu Ray rentals and they ain't going away no time soon.

For me I will forever buy blu rays and DVDS as they have subtitles fixed on them which for me, as someon'e who's hearing impaired, is the better option. From what I've seen the digital age, streaming films, restricts that and DVDs have always been fantastic for subtitles. I've yet to find any streaming service to display subtitles so I'll stick with the hardware.

I think streaming is the future, but I think they have to completely change their business model before it can have a shot at making physical media obsolete. The idea of licensing each individual movie is a nightmare when it comes to widespread streaming -- Netflix streaming needs a much wider selection before I'd consider paying for it.

Personally, I'm against digital for a multitude of reasons. I love collecting dvds and blu-ray's and having the actual box in my hand. But also, I have bought a couple digital movies on Amazon and you can't really do much with them. The only place you can watch them is on your computer or an Amazon capable device. With Netflix, it seems more often than not I'll go to watch a movie and they either don't have it or it was pulled due to the contract being up.

I'm an extras geek, streaming doesn't have them. I DO have netflix and DO love it but like you touched upon titles can be gone in no time. I thought about using netflix, all the ads and stuff say 6.99 per month and fine you pay that just for netflix, but if I watched a movie everyday for a month my broadband bill would be over it's limit so there'd be extra charges. So getting 4 or 5 blu-rays for $£€25 whatever, you can have them whenever you want and you only pay once

I'm so frustrated with the digital format. Certain titles are available for a limited time only. It's really annoying when you've waited to purchase a particular digital title and it's no longer available. In addition, I've noticed in digital certain scenes are missing as opposed to the hard copy. Because of this I'll stick to purchasing dvd/blu ray copies. It seems every time I go shopping for a particular copy I can't seem to find one locally. I'm finding that the dvd section in the department stores are shrinking much like the cds did. Anyways, I hope you never have to move because that's a lot of movies to pack.

  • @kev0802
    @kev0802 12 лет назад

I think another problem that comes from streaming everything, will be with the internet providers. Can they really offer unlimited internet access to everybody ? Everything uses internet now, so it's highly possible the internet providers will limit how much we can download to save money. Then you find yourself with the problem of not being able to stream if you watch a lot of films. With DVD or Blu-ray you can watch as many as you want, as many time as you want.

  • @StaticBlaster
    @StaticBlaster 4 года назад

Digital media sucks because you don't actually own the movies even the movies you buy on vudu, fandango, Amazon prime and Microsoft. Buying movies on those digital platforms is just an indefinite rental and it's contingent on the contract between the retailers and movie distributors. If the contract expires well there goes your movie. That's why physical media is much better because you actually own your DVDs and blurays. The only way for your collection to suddenly disappear is if someone robbed you or your house caught on fire but that stuff generally doesn't happen. What are the odds that's going to happen to you? It's very low. LONG LIVE PHYSICAL MEDIA!!!

I definitely think streaming will be (and is now but that's not the point) very popular but I think there will still be people who would rather own blu-rays or just don't have the internet access or whatever. It very well could happen but I don't think BRs will go, at least for a while.

DVD's HAVE been around for a long time.... since 1995. It's a cycle. When something new comes in, DVD for example, they will continue to ride out the VHS tapes until there is no profit left. Blu Ray's probably only need about 1-2 more years before DVD's are done being produced.

  • @kassemir

CD's are still around because the audio quality is better than MP3, it's sort of an elitist format right now.
When they figure out how to do high quality compressed audio that doesn't take up too much disc space, or simply stream in CD quality, it'll probably die out.
    But there'll probably always be a niche-market for both CD's and LP's.

I even purchase and bid on vhs on ebay. But I don't know, it just seems that many people still want the tangible item, with all the artwork, and the special editions, directors cuts, with all the extras. Sadly, this is coming, and the studios are jumping for joy for this to happen. They have been combating the home video market for over a decade now, especially in light of how popular dvd became and people waiting for the dvd to come out instead of going to the movie. They want you to only rent the movie for a limited time and then when they felt like they need to make money on the movie again, they will kill your stream and make you purchase it again.

I could definitely see physical movies end up being like records are today, plenty of bands still release their music on vinyl and I think most movies will still be physically released but in much more limited quantities so collectors can still get them. I think it will take at least 20 years, who knows!

Look at iTunes you can get just about any album on there... netflix will get to that level of maturity eventually.

Don't be stupid, HD (blu ray) is here to stay, because you simply can't stream HD quality movies (not 25 GBs worth anyways, because it takes too long, it would take a whole day just to download and stream a blu ray quality movie. The only thing I see happening is disks going away and thumb drives taking over, because they are smaller, and easier to store. The price on those are dropping, once they are cheaper to manufacture they will replace disks, HD movies will then be placed on them.

@jack2breeze Same here. Most of the time, I find myself preferring the VHS artwork over DVD/Blu-Ray artwork.

I'm sure DVDs and Blu Rays will be around for a while with netflix and streaming.

I don't think it will ever get to the point of just streaming. There's too big of a market with all us collectors. At least I hope it won't ever get to that point. Our Best Buy here in town used to be incredible as far as the in store stocked DVDs a few years ago. Now they have absolutely no selection at all. It sucks. We had two Blockbusters here and they both closed down.

I know what you mean about stores closing I live in Northern Ireland my city use to have a lot of stores selling movies like Woolworths, Caroline Music, ViginMegastores, Zavvi and Head now all of them have closed all is left HMV which could be closing down soon and supermarkets. Supermarkets dont really carry most things i want so most of my purchases have to be online which annoying as sometimes I like just to go out have a look around to see what I find .

i can see dvd's being around for the next ten to twenty years. just because there is a huge amount of people who changed formats from VHS to DVD and don't want to change again. i will never change formats after disks i don't see a huge difference in a disk or card. maybe the next generation of kids will be all about streaming but they will never have a chance to see rare classics that dvd collectors have in their collection. so i think when dvd's do go out of format they will be ultra valuable

@dreno4618 you're being ignorant. I said "im not saying it's coming sometime soon". 11 years really isn't much, and I do realize that some people still buy CD's - but are they going to do that in 20 years from now? Physical form is going away, of course it is. And how would the studios lose money? They would make more, considering the elimination of packacking and stuff.

I thought once a movie was on netflix, it was there permanently. So a given movie is only on there for a limited time?
