Ur so cool! Ive been a "jack of all trades" artist for years. Learned more in this one video than i have surfing the web since the internet was born. Thanks so much!!
Ugh!! I'm so glad I found this. I'm a lifelong artist (sewing, leather, cricut machine, painting, YOU NAME IT), and my most recent hobby is woodburning. I knew I was getting a cheaper pen, but my god, I'd rather watch paint dry lol!! I do, however, use finger oven mitts and use watercolor pencils for my sketches, so after the burn I just take a damp cloth and wipe my sketch away! I'm definitely investing in a better, wired pen.
I just orders 4 things from Amazon to get me started in wood burning . I got a decent wood burner …it was over $100 but it comes with both types of burners and a bunch of tips. I got 4 pieces of 8x8 wood, some stencils and some carbon transfer paper…oh and some sand paper. Wish me luck
@BurnSavvy I can't wait for it to get here! Ordered it from the store you linked as they had the cheapest price. Hopefully it gets to Missouri before the winter weather hits later this week. I'm holding off my next project till it gets here. By the way is there a specific grit of aluminum oxide you use to clean the nibs? And what's the best way to deal with the smoke while using it inside?
I started wood burning about a year ago but have taken the last few months off to focus on house projects. Decided to watch a couple videos before i start back up, glad i found you. Your energy is great and advice was easy to understand and follow.
I'm not experienced with pyrography yet...but, I am an artist and like to paint what I draw on wood in addition to the canvas. A .05 mechanical art pencil is fantastic, using a light hand. A plastic eraser works wonderfully for any mistakes as it doesn't spread the graphite all over. I hope this helps anyone who wants to draw their own designs without problems.

I was wondering what are your thoughts about using linseed oil to finish it? I recently bought some for my wood carving and was wondering how well it works for wood burning? Thank you for the great video.
So pleased i found your channel! You're very infectious and very honest! Sounds like very good advice and you explain why to do or not to do things and use great analogies 😊 Its a new sub from me! Just got an lh30 wire nib machine form the oh ❤ cant wait to give it a go. Didnt know transfers were a thing been doing freehand doodles .. probably should have look this all up earlier 😂
That’s a great question… annnnnnd a tough one. See, pricing is complicated and varies based on lots of things. A common equation people use is (materials x 2) + hours = price. Being a beginner, sometimes it takes longer and customers aren’t always willing to pay hefty prices for long hours. Soooo you could tell them the base price is (whatever materials x2 is) then tell them you charge per hour after. If they’re concerned, you could cap the price of labor at a price point you both are happy with. And as with anything, you will learn more as you gain experience with your target market 🙌🔥
Great video :) I almost never sketch directly on the wood because the pencil is such a pain to erase, but I may need to buy a sand eraser, didn’t know that was a thing. I transfer sketches with plain tracing paper, it’s really easy and low tech and there’s no chemicals :)
When buying a wood burner for the first time (wire nib, with temperature control through a dial), would you say it's worth doing the jump to get a 100w one, or should one get a 60w one? I imagine 100w would give more ranges to work with and be more "future proof", but not sure if it'd also make it much harder to control in general
Great question. I have found that the watts don’t really matter. Watts are how much power the machine pulls from the wall. But what’s more important is how much power the machine delivers to the nib. That’s measures by the quality and gauge of the wire from the machine to the pen as well as the quality and gauge of the wire nib itself. It’s hard to tell how high quality the burner is without using it yourself and comparing it to other tools though. So make sure you check reviews. My favorite burner is only 35w and it burns a huge range. Here’s a link to it if that helps - code SAVVY gets you a discount too: www.bearwood.com/savvy-professional-kit.html?aff=14 Happy shopping!
@@BurnSavvy Thank you for the explanation! Maybe I won't fuss about getting the higher wattage then (one brand I was looking at has models ranging from 45w to 100w but the price increase is significant) and try to prioritize other qualities. I wish we had more options in my country (and more people sharing the experience with the few we do have), you all seem to have some really nice stuff overseas, specially when it comes to tips! 🥹
Just wanted to say thanks for some great info. I'm looking forward to the other videos. Been a woodworker (scrollsaw) for decades, hoping to add to that.
how do you know if the wood is toxic? I bought some craft wood from walmart but I cant find out what type of wood it is! Also, is it safe to do indoors if I use a fan and do it near a window?
Craft wood is usually safe. Personally, I would just pay attention to myself. If you feel like you’re getting headaches or feeling sick or light headed, stop. Sometimes it means the wood is toxic. Sometimes it means you don’t have enough ventilation. Sometimes that means that you are burning a sealant.
Older wood is okay, just gets porous and foamy and more difficult to get a clean line. The problem with barn wood is that it’s usually treated with something. Burning chemicals can create toxic fumes. So typically I recommend not burning barn wood and I don’t like burning old wood either
I have done bare minimum using the cheap tool and got discouraged. I was not sanding my piece good enough and not having the best wood to start out on I was constantly getting my pen in small dips in the wood and I wasn’t applying the even pressure because of this so of course it looked liked crap. I did so much research but like you stated the professional burner is almost a requirement in my view to prevent the discouragement that I went through. I haven’t used the professional burner yet because I thought first I’m going to feed my brain with all the knowledge of this burner. When I was using the basic burner I didn’t watch videos from those who used the professional burner simply because I figured it was not worth it if I’m not using it. You just have no idea what you shared in this video I’ve not heard 85% of the tips and tricks. I regret I don’t have the wood right now to start but I’m forcing myself to take it slow and let my growth be the guiding factor on next steps. I’m so so glad I found your channel so thanks for all that you’ve done to inspire me just from this one video. I’m going now to binge watch more of your content now. One question if you by chance get to see this comment. What color medium looks the best on balsa wood? Can you use gouache on wood? I want my work to pop but not drown out my burning either. Thanks again!
There's being able to turn the heat down so you can take your time. Then there's having it hot enough so that it doesn't take forever to burn the simplest of designs.
I’ve been burning off and on since 2005. More so within the last year or two. But my issue is pricing my work, and selling it. I can’t seem to sell it as quickly or well as I’d like, and I always tend to undercharge myself.. And I also do mostly wood but I’d like to try other things such as leather and bone and paper.. and I know there’s other materials too like certain hats but can’t remember what it is
Felt hats are definitely popular right now. They smell terribly but so do a lot of other mediums. Here’s a video I did on mediums, besides wood: 8 Best Things to Woodburn [That Are NOT Wood] ruclips.net/video/NJK7WVLf74k/видео.html Pricing is a tricky one. I am definitely planning to do a video on that. Wayyyyyy too many variables to stuff in a comment. But I totally hear you on this, and it is a common problem.
Hello, would anyone have the link to the wire nib kit she has? I've been looking for one that I can hold closer to the point like the one she has but I can't find one! Someone please help me!
One more question? I read somewhere a while ago that a person was actually carving and burning their pieces. Is that really possible? I don’t see how both can be used on the exact portions together, maybe one could be carving using a Dremel tool for the lettering and painting the lettering but burn other portions of the piece. Do I have that right or can you burn and carve say the lettering? Sorry for two lengthy questions!
Oh, my! NUANCED tips that are perfect answers to this beginner's questions! ;A; Thank you so much! I was wondering what those beautiful wire-nibbed machines were, and I had no idea I could turn a fan around to help with the smoke. My lines look more like a streak of ugly dots. I can't tell how much pressure to use... Luckily, I knew not to burn over any chemicals already! x)
Hello, thank you for the tips! I’m completely new to this. I am working on a hiking stick for my nephew at the moment but I’m very interested in this. Any tips for burning on hiking or walking sticks? Thank you 😊
Glad you found them helpful! Round surfaces can be tricky. Place the stick on a flat surface and on a towel or something that will keep it from rolling. Then prop your hand up on something else (bean bags, books, boxes) to raise your hand to the same level as your burning surface.
Absolutely. I’ve got an entire playlist on beats ne worst wood. Hope this helps! 👇 Best Wood for Wood Burning ruclips.net/p/PLlOnZI-MNsnFYwCARY_sRAK9zTh3YvUK5
Great question. It is not necessary, but the burn will fade a lot faster without it. Finishing also helps keep the wood from checking (aka cracking) as it dries out over time.
Sounds like a regular solid point burner. If it has a way to turn the heat up or down aside from just plugging it in, then it should be just fine for a solid point burner. I prefer a wire nib machine, but those are almost 10 times the price but they cut my burn time in half and definitely make things easier. If price isn’t an issue, then yes definitely upgrade!
I picked up the walnut hollow creative creative wood burner from Michael’s. It’s a wire nib one that’s $99. I got a really really cheap one over 4 years ago and did one project, for my gf at the time, which didn’t come out that bad. I got into clay sculpting and interested in wood carving as well. Any way my interest in burning is growing. That’s why I got that model. Hopefully it works well and lasts long enough for development. I got it bc it want to much and I’m going to do a couple quick projects for Christmas gifts which will be a little late. lol Do you know anything about the walnut hollow creative wood burner wire nib one?
I do. It’s one of the many burners I plan to review. Mine has always worked well, but I have friends who have had lemons. It seems hit and mess, but if you get a good one, and you take care of it, it can last you a long time.
@@BurnSavvy I used it for the first time the other day. I love it. It doesn’t retain heat like I imagine a higher grade one would but it’s way better than the “soldering iron” I used a long time ago on my first burn. This is the perfect beginner machine in my opinion. Is a nice price point and very easy to use. It heats up fast and cold down pretty fast. It’s extremely easy to change the tips. Now this is my first wood burner like this but I like it.
Here's a link to my favorite smoke absorber: amzn.to/3kCksdo In the future, you can just click the three dots next to the video and tap the description 👍🔥
I’ll have to look those up! I haven’t heard of them. But I do know that heat sets carbon and graphite into wood. So once the pencil marks are heated, it doesn’t come off without being sanded off. I would be hesitant to use it without testing it out first
One thing I learned is finger covers (the things that look like mini condoms at the pharmacy 😂) on my thumb and index finger when burning hot. I’ve ended up getting an orange thumb MANY times, so when I’m burning super hot or for a long time, I wear those in order to not stain my fingers brown/orange. It also makes my fingers super grippy to my pen, which is a plus! The stain normally ends up staying for a week or two, and since I work as a barista, I know a customer doesn’t appreciate a “dirty” thumb around something they will consume. I love this option because gloves normally throw me off, and take a little time to adjust to. With the thin finger covers, it just feels like skin! It also comes in a multi-size pack for cheap, and has like 50 in there! I re-use them since it’s not being used for an open wound, so its great!

I'm starting to build my own guitars, and need a good way to put designs/logos on the headstocks... wood burning sounds like a good option, so I'm giving it a shot. Thank you for these tips, they should definitely make things easier lol
Happy to help!
I was wondering what are your thoughts about using linseed oil to finish it? I recently bought some for my wood carving and was wondering how well it works for wood burning? Thank you for the great video.
I personally have not used linseed oil, but lots of pyros use it and love it
@BurnSavvy That's fantastic to hear about it. Thank you so much your videos are turning out to be amazing 👏
I just got a qood and it's a really good one. I Subscrib to your channel so I can learn .thank you for sharing good advice
Happy you’re enjoying it! 🔥👍
Thank you!! Your videos are super informative and helpful. I appreciate you sharing your talent so that I can develop mine!
I’m delighted to hear it! 🙌🔥 Happy burning
So pleased i found your channel! You're very infectious and very honest! Sounds like very good advice and you explain why to do or not to do things and use great analogies 😊 Its a new sub from me! Wood has its very own beauty for sure but how wonderful to be able to enhance it and respect it! Im very much looking forward to binge watching your other videos! So glad i found you 😊 Thank you
This comment made my day! Glad you’re enjoying the videos 🙌🔥
Thanks for all the tips😉!!!
Happy to help!
Just got an lh30 wire nib machine form the oh ❤ cant wait to give it a go. Didnt know transfers were a thing been doing freehand doodles .. probably should have look this all up earlier 😂
😂 we’re always learning. Have fun with your new toy!
as someone who used a wood burning tool for the first time earlier today, how do I price something like, say, woodburning a tree into a 5x8' board..?
That’s a great question… annnnnnd a tough one. See, pricing is complicated and varies based on lots of things. A common equation people use is (materials x 2) + hours = price. Being a beginner, sometimes it takes longer and customers aren’t always willing to pay hefty prices for long hours. Soooo you could tell them the base price is (whatever materials x2 is) then tell them you charge per hour after. If they’re concerned, you could cap the price of labor at a price point you both are happy with. And as with anything, you will learn more as you gain experience with your target market 🙌🔥
Thanks for this! In the text description you have 6. As before you burn 😮 I was relieved to see you meant after! 😅
😂 my bad! Updated
Super informational, thank you.
Happy to help!
Great video :) I almost never sketch directly on the wood because the pencil is such a pain to erase, but I may need to buy a sand eraser, didn’t know that was a thing.
I transfer sketches with plain tracing paper, it’s really easy and low tech and there’s no chemicals :)
Yep! Same. 🙌🔥 Although sometimes I get tired of drawing it 3 times - sketch, trace, burn. 😂
@@BurnSavvy yeah totally 😆
Would a projector showing an image be a good idea? Whether you trace it or just go right for the burning.
Yep! That’s a great method.
Here’s a link to it if that helps - code SAVVY gets you a discount too:

Happy shopping!
Awesome! I’m happy to be helpful! Welcome to the pyro family 🙌🔥
how do you know if the wood is toxic? I bought some craft wood from walmart but I cant find out what type of wood it is! Also, is it safe to do indoors if I use a fan and do it near a window?
Craft wood is usually safe. Personally, I would just pay attention to myself. If you feel like you’re getting headaches or feeling sick or light headed, stop. Sometimes it means the wood is toxic. Sometimes it means you don’t have enough ventilation. Sometimes that means that you are burning a sealant.
What about using older wood such as old barn wood?
Yep that’s hard. Any color works for balsa, I would use something less watery because of balsa’s wood grain. Yes to gouache. Good luck!
There's being able to turn the heat down so you can take your time. Then there's having it hot enough so that it doesn't take forever to burn the simplest of designs.
Exactly 🙌🔥
I’ve been burning off and on since 2005. More so within the last year or two. But my issue is pricing my work, and selling it. I can’t seem to sell it as quickly or well as I’d like, and I always tend to undercharge myself.. And I also do mostly wood but I’d like to try other things such as leather and bone and paper.. and I know there’s other materials too like certain hats but can’t remember what it is
Felt hats are definitely popular right now. They smell terribly but so do a lot of other mediums. Here’s a video I did on mediums, besides wood:
8 Best Things to Woodburn [That Are NOT Wood]
ruclips.net/video/NJK7WVLf74k/видео.html
Pricing is a tricky one.
Here’s a link if it helps. Coupon code SAVVY gets you a discount too: www.bearwood.com/savvy-professional-kit.html?aff=14
I just started today. I'm making some Christmas ornaments .
Excellent 🔥🙌 have fun!
Your tip about Angling your easel was incredible. It works so well thank you!😊👍🔥
So happy it was helpful!
Yes, you can do both. A lot of people do carvings and then use woodburning to decorate it. 👍
Luckily, I knew not to burn over any chemicals already! x)
THIS is is the kind of response that makes it all worth it. 🙌🔥 Keep burning, pyro!
So glad I’ve found your channel xXx
Happy you’re enjoying it! 🔥🙌
Use a little rubbing alcohol on a rag to remove pencil marks from wood-just a little and let it evaporate before burning
I’ll have to try that one too, thanks!
Thanks. This video is what I was looking for ❤
Glad I could help! 🙌🔥
I put small pieces of wood to practice with since I'm a beginner. But it's not burning well. Could it be the type of wood I have?
Absolutely. I’ve got an entire playlist on beats ne worst wood. Hope this helps! 👇

Total newbie here. Is 'finishing' or 'sealing' the wood necessary? What is it for?
Great question. It is not necessary, but the burn will fade a lot faster without it. Finishing also helps keep the wood from checking (aka cracking) as it dries out over time.
@@BurnSavvy thank you!
Is finished birch wood hood for wood burning?
Yes. Here is a playlist you might find helpful:

lol "I had no idea when you turn a fan away from you it pulls smoke in. I had no idea that was a thing" best part of the video.
😂 glad you enjoyed it
Mine is a decorative wood burner is it OK or should I take it back and get a better one? I just got this for V-Day
Sounds like a regular solid point burner.
I’m wondering if I could use it to melt plastic? I don’t really want to do wood burning.
Yep. That’s a common practice too
NICE❤ I use carbon paper to transfer designs onto wood 👍
That’s my favorite method too 🙌
Excellent tutorial 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Happy you enjoyed it 🙌🔥
I just bought a live edge board to do a wood burning but the edge is very brittle. What should I do before I start burning ?
I would continue to burn it, then glue the bark back on after
I picked up the walnut hollow creative creative wood burner from Michael’s. I got it bc it want to much and I’m going to do a couple quick projects for Christmas gifts which will be a little late. lol
Do you know anything about the walnut hollow creative wood burner wire nib one?
I do. It’s one of the many burners I plan to review. Mine has always worked well, but I have friends who have had lemons. It seems hit and mess, but if you get a good one, and you take care of it, it can last you a long time.
@@BurnSavvy
Ty I haven’t used it yet. I’m a little under the weather so after work I just want to lay down. Lol
Hopefully it’s not a lemon.
@@BurnSavvy
I used it for the first time the other day.
An air purifier with a carbon filter on high next to you while burning will work great to suck the smoke in and filter it.
Yep! I like this one from Kotto: amzn.to/46TnMmH
Sorry I couldn’t find the link for the carbon filter you mentioned in your short video.
Here's a link to my favorite smoke absorber: amzn.to/3kCksdo
In the future, you can just click the three dots next to the video and tap the description 👍🔥
why don't you use one of those heat-erasable friction pens? wouldn't the ink just "erase" with a little heat, which is what you're using, right?
I’ll have to look those up! I haven’t heard of them. But I do know that heat sets carbon and graphite into wood. So once the pencil marks are heated, it doesn’t come off without being sanded off. I would be hesitant to use it without testing it out first
I should have seen your video before investing in the “cheaply” appro😜
😂 welllll darn it!
Ty for sharing!!
Happy to help 🙌
Sounds pretty great! I’ve tried several options and have a few favorites myself. It’s definitely important to protect those fingers! 🙌🔥
