It is okay to burn on cedar. However, some people find the fumes are an irritant to their lungs. Even if they don’t have an issue with it, the other people in the house may find it irritating. You can use a carbon-activated filter fan to reduce the fumes in the air. The other thing to consider with cedar is that burning on the outer sapwood, which is a light color, shows up well but burning on the red heartwood is hard to see. As the wood ages, the red heartwood will get darker. In addition, the heartwood will darken when you add a clear finish to the piece. Both will make it hard to see your burning. You can burn the image darker than usual to keep it visible. Also, do not use lacquer as a finish because it will deepen the heartwood to a dark red/black color. I recommend using polyurethane or polyacrylic as a finish.

Update: I received my rotating table in Dec 2020 and find it to be a great tool; especially since it allows you to adjust the angle of the project should you need to burn at a different angle, and rotating the project is easy to do, using the accompanying wedge to keep the turntable in one place.

One comment on the commercial about Lomi, which I know you have no control over. I'm just making a comment for everyone on this product - they claim "stop food waste." I've been doing many crafts in the past and I got into ''torch paste'' which I really enjoyed tho I have ''entertained the idea of ''wood burning''. Well,my three son's have so much confidence in me and they invested a ''wood burning tool kit'' as a Christmas gift. A question we all had was ''can you go over your ''torch paste'' heat gun burnt image and give it more of the ''wood burning" effect(tho I thought it might give off fumes from the torch paste). I hope this question makes sense. Thank you and I've learned alot from your video.

Hi this is very helpful, I got a wood burning kit for Christmas but not anything like yours. It's the Weller 15-piece wood burning and hobby iron kit. I was wondering if this one works too?

Hi I bought a razor tip wood burner ssd10 it’s used and there is a little hole on top above the knob to control the heat setting it has a small screw like on the inside what is it for it has little bars and goes to bigger bars is that another way to turn the heat up
That is the SSD-10’s calibration hole for extra low-end temperature adjustment. It is used for turning down the heat if the “1” setting is too hot, like when you are sculpting or burning with wax. Thanks for watching!
Good Question. Since it's more of a European product, we do not have hands on testing with it. But looking at the specs online, looks like a great starter/novice unit because you have heat settings and plenty of tip options. Thanks for watching!
Brilliant, very informative, thanks for that. The only thing I did not like was the camera angle on the shots in which you illustrate the different types of tips, because the point of view made it hard for me to make out the different shapes on the sheets. Beside that, very good and useful indeed.
Can you paint your wood before you brand your wood ? Thank you this video is awesome just bought me a wood burner I’m new to this I like it but it is time consuming
Thanks for watching Jessie, it's not a good idea to paint before you burn, as you'll be burning the paint. Depending on the paint, it can smell pretty bad, like melted trashbags. It's an experience we do not recommend lol.
@@jessiegbrown1520 Yes, you can do that or you can burn the design, apply masking tape to the letter, razor blade around to cut the tape to the shape you don't want to paint, and then paint. That way you don't risk paint getting on the letter. Hope that helps
You can, but soldering tips are larger, broader, and aren't designed for long periods of heat extraction. They are meant for fast heat transfer to metal conductors. This means when you put these on wood they cool faster, losing heat and making it not a smooth process to wood burn. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
We recommend www.woodworkingshop.com/product/RZ00021 and compound www.woodworkingshop.com/product/HRBD1/ The main reason so many opinions is the amount of options. Buffing compounds are like abrasives, where they have a grit and each one does a different level of cleaning/polishing. Depends on the tip, wood, burner style and what you are trying to do. No one set temperature is going to work for everything. Set to 350, and try it if it's burning to hot to fast or too dark, then back it down until you find where you are happy with the results.
Hi, this video is very good for beginners, but I have a solid-point woodburner. Do I need to buy a new one (like yours) to get those (good) results? Or can I do everything with mine?
There are limitations to the solid point burners. Most have a skew or chisel point to them so you wouldn't be able to have writing tips or shaders on that style of burner.
Michele, Is it OK to woodburn on cedar? Thank you.
