Ta-Nehisi Coates must be protected at all costs! He is a gift to humanity to our generation and we are blessed to have him in our presence and read his words and listen to his voice. Excellent interview!
These conversations are a must and should be required for all those who care about Palestine and the world at large. I hope these kind of conversations become the norm... all this knowledge is desperately needed in this country right now. Ta-Nehisi continues to race the bar, his courage, empathy and integrity continue to inspire. Thank you to the Makdisi brothers, I'm glad to learn about you and everything you have to share.
Thank you for such a wonderful conversation about Palestine. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "the message" and truly grateful to have such a courageous voice on your podcast. A wonderful quote from an exceptional intellectual Howard Zinn: "We don't have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world."
Around a year ago I watched a wonderful documentary called "Roadmap to Apartheid" and I just couldn't believe my eyes and ears. Like Ta-Nehisi said "different roads? What?" - I just couldn't stomach that up and I went straight to the Google maps... And there they were, separate roads. And then I searched for "roads clothed for Palestinians West Bank" and there they were again. All the information is out there available, it's public, it's widely known to anyone who looked into the matter for some decent amount of time. And yet media is acting as if it doesn't exists pretending that Israel is a normal state, calling it civilized.
Difficult conversations are necessary for healing. Mr. Coates has opened the door for difficult conversations. Hopefully there will be others courageous enough to enter the door.
From Ireland My daughter just completed a university essay with quotations from Edward Said. Ive been following your stuff for a while now, but didn't know your collective connection to him. Thanks so much much for the content.
Great and refreshing discourse and perspectives! In addition to-or even above-Ta-Nehisi Coates' recommendation of The Unspoken Alliance: Israel's Secret Relationship with Apartheid South Africa by Sasha Polakow-Suransky, I highly recommend The Israeli Connection by Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi. The chronology and details in the latter are remarkable.
Israel’s oppression of Palestine me and the West’s complicity clarified for me why the west silences and resists unpacking of colonialism. Once you see it, you cannot unsee it.
Fantastic interview, thank you! I would love a full episode discussing your uncle’s impact on your thought process, scholarship, and understanding of the Palestine question. And hopefully some great stories from your time with him.
I really appreciate how Te-Nehisi was challenged in this conversation regarding violent resistance. I especially enjoyed Karim's comment of surrender being the other option. That framing was so crisp amidst a thought experiment that can get very muddied by personal preferences. Oppression is not fair or reasonable. Liberation has a cost, and the oppressed aren't the ones that set that price it is the oppressor.
What I love about Ta-Nahisi's interviews is that he is open to explore new ideas and learn during the interview interaction. He doesn't repeat marketing piches. He expands his and our understanding.
So nice to see an intelligent interview with Ta-Nehisi. He says that the facts of apartheid are incontestable. Yes of course but the media here in the UK at least just ignore that and have always focused instead on "the conflict", where they try to make out that it's an intractable conflict between two equal sides. They don't talk about the oppression of one side by the other.
Why if woman finally get leadership role, it would not change anything because they are chosen to be female version of masters of the system, not those who would offer critiques of a bad system
Thank you very much! Great conversation again. In German speaking Europe we do not get these informations. Even most alternative media has no clue about the context of the Palestine struggle (with few exceptions).
One of the big arguments for Israel as it currently exists is the “antisemitism is everywhere!” argument. This is ubiquitous in most western media. This same media doesn’t make much of a distinction between Palestinian advocacy and actual antisemitism.
@ Yes, you are totally right. That just does not compute in the pro-Israel narrative. It’s all about how Palestinians and Arabs in general are just violent and want to kill Jews and destroy Israel. This is the “tough neighborhood” argument. There is also the “you don’t understand what it is like to live here” argument.

I'd like to recommend a travel channel with the last ten or so episodes are in Palestine 22/23. He's a foul mouthed Irish darling, the channel is called Shite Guides.
The 2017 charter covers their goals. The book Understanding Hamas and Why That Matters covers Palestinians life re women, education, they don’t deny Christianity, or the Jewish religion.
The question applies in reverse. Over the same period of time how many Palestinians were aware of the Black experience in America. Human history cannot be compared. Every human being has FIRST understood the world according to the world they were born in.
@ You are being defensive rather than rational. Reread the inquiry. “How many” was rhetorical. You responded with an absolute generalization. “Palestinians r educated”.
@@deliberatedmind Palestinians are one of the best educated populations in the world. Many people don't realize the traditional importance of education to them
Your podcast is unbelievably insightful and important. Thank you. This conversation in particular reminded me of Nan Goldin's important recent speech, "Germany are you listening?" in Germany: ruclips.net/video/E5lJtGfEV6E/видео.html
One thing I hope gets mentioned more in regards to his questions re hezb and 7amas vision after liberation and to reconcile with those groups is that those groups didn't just exist because of the occupation, they are the result of years of trying and succeeding in killing any secular resistance that came before ie George habash or ghassan kanafani and the likes. The reason these groups are the leaders of the resistance is because their ideology has allowed them to survive irregardless of how many times they get hit. This is very evident especially recently with how hizb still managed to survive despite losing their entire top military brass. You don't have to agree with their ideology but it's their ideology the resistance is still alive.
surrender under circumstances of genocide is not an option compared to resistance, under circumstances of genocide, your v bare existence becomes resistance, that's all you have left, under today,s circumstances of genocide in Gaza, your breath has become your resistance.
Everyone should endeavor to read "The Message" as it's beautifully written and quite enlightening. See how stories of oppression are weaved together, almost calling us all to action to act and advocate for justice. It pains me a great deal to see the painful experiences Palestinians are going through. Israel’s genocidal war and its practice of apartheid.
The old Left has a Western history linked to "Humanitarianism" which IMO has a hard time recognizing, accepting and dealing with psychopathy. "Identifying" with moral purity can narrow how we relate to "evil" actions. And how we respond. I appreciate that both H's have considered where they're coming from and are disciplined in their actions dealing with people who lack the conscience to respond to such techniques as passive resistance.
the relationship is to US native laws (indian removal, etc) and genocidal practices, Patrick Wolfe writes about it in Settler colonialism and the elimination of the native. Black people are wanted for the labor, therefore slavery. Native people are standing between the colonizer and land, therefore they want to eliminate/displace them.
This is why Harris struggles when speaking. She is afraid to misspeak instead of speaking her truth. The only time she gives definitive answers is when she says she is not in favor of progressive policies

Zionism is the antithesis to the Palestinians as a people, not only Palestine itself.
The interviewers are asking questions as if there are not ANY Palestinians who seek power and prestige at any immoral price.
