Arrowhead stadium is the iconic home of the Kansas City Chiefs. Ground was broken for the stadium complex on July 11, 1968 with Arrowhead finally opening on August 12, 1972, making it the third oldest currently used NFL stadium after Soldier Field and Lambeau Field.
The history of Arrowhead Stadium dates back to a 1967 bond that was issued to the tune of $102 million dollars. The original plan for the complex called for the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs to have two side by side stadiums with a shared roof, and other utility areas under the stadium. The common roof between the stadium would have been incredibly innovative, but ultimately proved to be too costly. The idea was scrapped, leading both stadiums to be open air.
In addition to the innovative shared roof idea, team owner Lamar Hunt also requested an extensive owner’s suite be built into the stadium. The suite was built with three bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room. The feature is incredibly unique, and remains at the stadium to this day. Other unique design aspects include the upper bowl of the stadium being placed at a steep incline to increase seating. Although the feature increased seating at the stadium, it limited access for those with disabilities and could not be replicated at modern NFL stadiums due to new regulations.
The stadium’s design remained unchanged for nearly two decades, although in 1984 a study was introduced to see if a fabric dome could be placed over the stadium. The concept was thrown out as it was deemed too expensive. No further renovations were done until 1991 when two screens shaped as footballs were added to both end zones of the facility. Natural grass eventually replaced the astro turf in 1994.
By 2006 Arrowhead Stadium was beginning to show its age, so a new $850 million dollar bond was approved to finance renovations for both Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadium. In part due to the renovations, the NFL awarded Kansas City the right to host Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, with the caveat that a permanent roof be installed on the stadium. Studies again showed that the roof would not be feasible, and the plan to host the Super Bowl was dropped.
Additional renovations at the stadium including updating the video boards, a new Chiefs Hall of Honor, and additional luxury seating were added. The stadium’s renovations were completed in time for the 2010 season. Further renovations were undertaken in 2019 with the aging seats in the lower bowl replaced. Renovations to the locker room had to be put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Arrowhead Stadium continues to be an iconic and beloved NFL venue nearly 50 years after its grand opening.

Lifelong Broncos fan but I’ve always loved this stadium. Pure football atmosphere. When they switched it grass, it looked even better. Class.
During the playoffs I told my wife to look at Arrowhead when they showed an exterior shot on tv. I told her how beautiful and unique it is, and how it feels retro and new all at the same time. Simply put, it’s a work of art.
Drove by on a road trip when I was 8 in 1983. Was amazed.

I absolutely love this place. It takes my breath away every time I walk out the tunnel to the seats. I was there for the AFC Championship game against the Titans, nothing like celebrating with 76000 of your closest friends.
Being from the Ozarks and being at a game there in the upper deck felt like looking down into a giant sinkhole
The most unique thing about Arrowhead (and Kaufman stadium next door for the royals) is when they were built them they built 2 separate stadiums!! They were built as a 1 sport stadium right next to each other! At the time everything being built was that cookie cutter 1 stadium dual purpose crap like RFK veterans stadium San Diego etc. I think I saw somewhere the Kansas City stadiums were the only non dual purpose stadiums built in a 20 year span (it might have been just for MLB stadiums can’t remember). Everything else built being built and designed was dual. The Chiefs and Royals went against that trend which is why their houses are loved to this day and still stand being used today while pretty much every dual purpose stadium built in the 60s and 70s is long gone, about to be gone or sitting unused falling apart. I think the only one being used is Oakland and it’s about done. If the city wasn’t broke that place would have been replaced 20 years ago. Heck the royals released a statement last year that they are looking at building a new one downtown to add shopping and bars (stupid I know) and the city went nuts they were pissed they do not want Kauffman Stadium to ever go away. I don’t think people cared one bit about places like RFK and if the A’s made that kind of statement today saying they building new for sure the fans of Oakland would cheer in excitement at the thought of the hated Colosseum going bye bye. Kansas City never gets the credit it deserves for what they did back in the 60s going against what was cool hip and cheaper at the time. Kemper was cool as well. Anyway
Sadly, Royals Stadium will probably be torn down and new, smaller stadium build downtown without one new parking space added. Vote no on April 2nd.
This is what happens when you build a premium high-end stadium dedicated to one sport from the get-go You get a quality legendary venue That can simply be renovated for years to come unlike the cookie cutter dual purpose stadiums built at the same time
Lambeau field is the oldest. Soldier field was geared down. They kept a little of of the remnants of the old, but it was a whole new stadium
The cool thing about it is in 1970 when it was being designed it wasn’t designed to be loud.

The reason it did not get a roof in 2006 is because the voters did not approve. There was two ballot measures, one to upgrade the stadiums and one to put on the rolling roof. The voters only approved the upgrades. Please correct this.
I studied this in college. It’s one of the most bizarre public responses I’ve seen in civics. They voted yes to a public tax and no to a private paid commercial tax and lost billions of revenue. Kansas City has a long and unique history of intentionally restricted growth. From the tiny airport to the lack of public transit in a train hub city, KC inherently wants to stay a small Big city.
@@jeffwilliams2828 It was a close call on either side. The public tax was approved by about 5K votes, the rolling roof did not pass and was about 4K votes shy. Both stadiums are gorgeous, but to think about a rolling roof parked out there - and how massive it would have to be - I think the voters made the right call, no matter who was going to pay for it. The airport was not tiny by any standards when it was built and ultra convenient. TWA going under years later was a blow and 9/11/2001 was its death sentence. The new airport will be great. Kemper Arena was a mistake from the get-go, but KC has done OK otherwise. I lived here my entire life and have traveled the world. The more I travel the more I appreciate KCMO. Just big enough, but not too big.

Arrowhead always looked like a weird stadium design to me. It wasnt a complete bowl but it was angular either. it was like the designers were going for a bowl with sharp edges type of hybred design.

I have been searching for something for us to emulate in the progressive, cultural meccas of our east and west coasts...when we should really just realize the only valuable parts of our nation are on the coasts! (Not the Gulf Coast)..they are as hillbilly as we are! If only NYC and LA could only be a bit closer for convenience...just eliminate 3000 miles of worthless flyover land.

Sadly, not for long. The new owner of the Royals wants to tear down the Royals Stadium. He wants to build a new, much small baseball stadium downtown where there is no parking.
There are not degrees of uniqueness; something is either unique or it isn't. This IS a unique stadium, but each one is too.

It was done because the Hunt family make their money from Texas oil. Therefore, they still live in Texas. This suite is used by the family on game weekends.
allthough they reside in dallas. they have a TON of ventures here in KC and are extremely important to our local economy. sports aside. they have an empire of businesses and property that operates here.
now if you want to dislike a hunt look into lamars brother. the one who worked with Muammar Gaddafi to invest and flesh out Libyan oil fields. or that time the brothers got caught trying to literally corner the silver market and drive the price up. the hunt family is a fantastic read if you get into it. the patriarch is known as the naturally wealthiest person on earth at one point in time when banking and railroad tycoons were dominating the economic landscape.
The Hunt family actually paid for the suite. There wasn't many hotels around the stadium and since they traveled to the stadium for every game they built a apartment. That fireplace is from France built in the 15th century that Mrs Hunt picked her self

@@ArchiveofEverything it is sad that the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers at the time did not hire Engineers that would use clever designs to reconstruct their stadiums. Both these stadiums could have been saved just like how Chicago and Kansas City and even Green Bay save their old stadium structures but upgraded it to where it almost looked new
ok. i am 61 years old and i was born and raised in virginia. the first time i saw the chiefs on a color tv i was about 10 or 11 years old and i immediately told my parents THAT is now my favorite team. it just so happens this was the stram/dawson/lanier team that had just won the super bowl a couple of years earlier, but i didn't know that. all i knew was they looked COOL. fast-forward to this past september, when i had the chance to visit arrowhead stadium two days before their season-opening game. we were not allowed inside, so my entire visit was spent on the outside of the stadium. to say i was disappointed is the extreme of understatement. maybe the interior looks good, but the exterior of the stadium is, in a word, PATHETIC. the parking lot is in horrible condition, the sidewalks are cracked, and the landscaping is severely neglected. the iconic "chiefs" oval needs repainting; the letters aren't even red; they are a dull brownish-something. i've made the pilgrimage, but it wasn't the memory i was hoping for. somebody get to work.

The steep angle of the upper bowl seating is not in any other NFL stadium. Only stadium left that was completed in the '70s.

Sir, perhaps we don't get out as much as we should (we are provincials, alas!) Arrowhead Stadium is located in Kansas City, MISSOURI. You may not realize it, but MISSOURI is a separate state from KANSAS. We in the state in which Arrowhead is located don't dwell on the ass bowl design for exclusivity, we just love it as our NFL stadium. I am so ignorant of other parts of our nation, I hope you realize the Chiefs don't play in KANSAS. This is not my decision, but the decision of the U.S. Congress in admitting MO as the 24th state in 1821, and KS as the 34th state in 1861. But, don't 'fret' about it..being from KCMO, I have been an unhonorary Kansan all my life!

I may be biased but the current Buffalo Bills stadium in its original form is a much more look appealing stadium - nothing was said about the seating capacity of Arrowhead but I do know the Bills current stadium seats 75,000 - and when the new Bills Stadium is completed it will seat 62,000 with a standing area for an additional 5,000. The existing Bills stadium and the new stadium will have the traditional oval shape which is historic to the NFL- Arrowhead Stadium is open at either end and is not a true oval. Not knocking Arrowhead (this is the first time I have seen any true image of Arrowhead) - I just prefer a true and complete oval stadium. Looking into the past I can remember the days when football fields were made to fit in original baseball stadiums - do many of you remember those days?

The royals are asking about a downtown venue.
Both stadiums wile dated amenities are still in very good shape, there is no reason to hold the city hostage to support a profitable business by granting tax dollars tax bonds to pay for somthing we do not need. Not wile we have sold Keppra arena for 1 dollar becuse the city could not pay to keep it up. Or an empty sprint center. And a next door venue thats over 100 years old and still used. Or the govners building we put up for the American royal to only have them move to Kansas.
The sports complex has a new hwy system next to it to deal with traffic the state foot the bill for.
St Louis has a few empty sports venues they spent big money on without a team.
It cost about 100 bucks to go to a football game in the noise bleed section and parking is 50 bucks fir 3 or 4 hours.
Why should tax payers shell out billions to pay for somthing new?

In cheifs stadium only the top is not accessible to hand caped people and how many times have you seen an entire parking lot of handicapped parking spots? Why does the whole complex need to fit this bill when 40 to 60% is more then enough?
I've sat in the nose bleed section of both stadiums its not that bad and id rather that view then sitting a whole lot futher back becuse by current standards your 30 yards futher away from the field.
Take a look at the new Raiders complex

If this stadium were in San Diego, I would say keep it. Its a beautiful outdoor stadium. I would rather see a Championship Professional Team like Chiefs play in new climate controlled stadium. They deserve it and the city deserves it. I always want to see the true best team play, not the teams that gets lucky in snow and ice.

Because Arrowhead is a unique, beautiful, family-gathering destination that actually has a soul. The stadium you speak of in St. Louis, though functional, is dark, unwelcoming and has no area around it for the opportunity for tailgating, gathering and the types of added-value experiences that the Truman Sports Complex has had since Day-1. On top of that, the city of St. Louis should have been way more proactive/creative/flexible way back when the St. Louis Football Cardinals occupied Busch Stadium. Had the city been more accommodating to the Bidwell family who owned the Cardinals, they'd still call St. Louis home and probably would have their own stadium already built down by the Mississippi near LaClede's Landing, or possibly even over on the Illinois side next to the river. The city of Kansas City and Jackson County have done a very good job of sustaining the properties over 50 years and it's my hope they're there for at LEAST 50 more!
if you think arrowhead is outdated youve never even stepped foot near it. definitely never been inside in the last decade. it does not look its age. and the age it has is the definition of character. every last amenity has been upgraded in the last 10 years, including new seats this past year. the suite level looks like a 4 star hotel and the food is amazing.. ive been in in the ed jones dome on several occasions, for multiple events. its a great venue! but at the end of the day it has zero charm. It has the feel and aesthetic of a convention center. and it quite literally doubles as one.....the area its in allows for minimal tailgating. its just a bad NFL venue... Arrowhead feels, looks, smells, and sounds EXACTLY like what the NFL experience is. Even opposing players will tell you that nothing feels more genuine and proper than playing a football game in arrowhead. it's the energy of 78k fans right on top of you. the elements beating down and the bright lights illuminating the field. its one of a handful stadiums that is actually playing proper football. and its a hell of an outdoor concert venue come summertime too.
Because Arrowhead has ALWAYS been a nicer stadium than the Edward Jones Dome. The dome wasn't all that great even when it was brand new. Arrowhead was way, WAY ahead of its time when it opened, so much so that it has influenced the design of virtually every NFL stadium that was built after it opened. The Dome was barely up to par the day it opened and obsolete a few years after it opened. If you have ever been to both stadiums you would know how superior to EJD Arrowhead really is, especially after the renovations 10 years ago. To give you an idea of the difference between the two, The Chiefs NEVER wanted Arrowhead replaced, but it DID need some repairs and upgrades by the time it was renovated at 35+ years old. The EJD was HALF that age when the Rams wanted it REPLACED because upgrading it enough to get it where it needed to be wasn't really feasible. The ONLY thing You can argue the EJD dome has going for it is the fact that it has a roof, which can be considered to be a bad thing when it comes to football stadiums, especially when they are soul-less and lifeless inside like EJD is. Arrowhead on the other hand is an icon. Go to a Chiefs game some time. Give yourself plenty of time to walk through the stadium before game time. Experience the game itself. Maybe then you'll understand WHY Arrowhead has the reputation it has.
