The NFL's Secret Stadium Apartment - Arrowhead Stadium's Secret Apartment Built By Lamar Hunt

  • Arrowhead Stadium has a secret. A three floor and three bedroom secret to be exact. If you’ve seen my video on Arrowhead Stadium from a few months back you know what I’m talking about. When the stadium was being designed by architect Charles Deaton and team general manager Jack Steadman, Lamar Hunt had them include a very special owners suite.
An owner's suite is meant to be the utmost luxury for the owner of a team. Take Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for example. He is known for his extravagant stadium and training complex for the world famous Dallas Cowboys. Even he doesn’t have a three bedroom apartment built into AT&T stadium.
Going back to the Lamar Hunt apartment at Arrowhead Stadium, it was built for truly a different time. The suite when it was first constructed included a full kitchen, living room, and three bedrooms and additional bathrooms. The most surprising of the features included has to be the bedrooms. During the course of an NFL game as the owner I’m not sure when you would need a bedroom, let alone 3. Having a full kitchen and no doubt staff to make meals in it would definitely the pinnacle of luxury that I’m sure other stadiums may have.
Other features of the suite that we can gather from the limited photos that exist of it are a cigar store Indian standing next to a grand staircase, and some kind of trophy room that looks to contain awards associated with the Chiefs team. The windows facing the field look like more general stadium style seating found in other luxury boxes, although it appears a small dining room also shares in the incredible view. My favorite piece of the apartment has to be the stained glass window above what I assume is a bar. The window which looks to be original has a Chiefs player holding a football about to be tackled by an opposing team. To me it looks a lot like the Cardinals away jerseys but I’d love to hear your opinion on what team the opposing player is supposed to represent.
This secret apartment is from a bygone era where stadium luxury had a whole different meaning. You probably would never see anything like this in modern stadiums where they are mostly funded by taxpayers and every square foot is designed to get the most money out of fans. The Lamar Hunt apartment is perhaps my favorite unique stadium.

2:20 - the stain-glass window is Ed Podolak scoring the first touchdown in Arrowhead during an exhibition game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Hunt family lives there. Back when the stadium was built Lamar Hunt and still to this day the Hunt family lived/lives in Dallas. The team moved to KC from Dallas and during the football season they would live in the apartment so they didn't have to travel so much back and forth. They still use the apartment to this day for the very reason. They maintain a home in the Dallas area and use the apartment during the season. Think of it as a vacation home. The apartment is pretty cool too. Yes they have a viewing area to sit and watch games and also invite people to join them. But it's not just an owners suite it is a full on family vacation home.

You mean even the hunt family finds the city of Kansas City boring and repulsive?

And the stained glass was the Kansas City Chiefs versus St Louis Cardinals. At that time there were two NFL teams in Missouri.

Strangely the Royals want a new stadium when Royals Stadium is still beautiful and was updated only a few years back.

Someone has a silly dream of a baseball team in downtown Kansas City. Kansas City is so spread out it makes no sense to have the stadium downtown with no parking just to have a couple bars and restaurants in the neighborhood is not a reason to move the stadium downtown

I think what they should do is invest in better public transportation to and from the complex (whether it be better bussing or a train/tram system) and then convert the parking section between the stadiums into commercial real estate.

Lamar Hunt maintained his home in Dallas, so that is the most logical explanation.

Cool video! Yes, that’s a cardinal player in the stain glass. I would think an apartment in a stadium is very handy for late nights preparing for the next week. It doesn’t seem unusual at all. I’m suprised more stadiums don’t have something like that.

I went to the First Chiefs game in Arrowhead in 1972. The Chiefs played the then St Louis Cardinals in a pre season game.

The obvious comp to this apartment is the one Roy Hofheinz built for himself in the Astrodome in the 1960s. It was much more opulent and gaudy than this.

It’s no secret, we’ve known about this suite since the beginning. I use to work at the stadium as a part time job, only particular people could go into it for cleaning. So your news isn’t that much a secret.

And this is why the hunt family does not want a new stadium!! Even as the state of Kansas 3-4 miles west of arrowhead on the Kansas City Kansas side of the Kansas City State line ( the team is on the Missouri side of Kansas City Missouri remember the state line for Kansas and Missouri goes down the middle of the city basically) are willing to fund a new stadium for them but they aren’t jumping on it. You’d think they too because They know it would be approved etc fast because it’s the same area the area just happens to have the state line go down the middle. They’d still be in Kansas City. Not rebranding etc. But since there is no way a new stadium even if it’s only 2% funded by public would be allowed to have an apartment for the owner inside. Would have to be 100% funded by the hunts nowadays to get a new apartment and despite being the second richest owner in the NFL he is too cheap to do 100% of it or even 1% of it so they don’t want to move!! The only reason it got approved in the 1960s is because Kansas City Missouri at the time was so desperate to get a football team so that was part of the deal. Because remember in the 1960s, you had three TV stations nationwide and one newspaper in Kansas City so who’s gonna report it to make some outrag?! No one! Anyway If they were smart now they would say well arrowhead is the Fenway of football because it’s the second oldest stadium in nfl football. But instead they just say I don’t wanna stadium. And well now you know why they don’t wanna lose their apartment!! Maybe they’re being smart and not calling at the Fenway football because if they somehow get a new apartment approved by the state of Kansas, then who would want to bulldoze the Fenway of football?? That might be smarter than I’m guessing. Or I am haha. The family live in Texas and only come up to KC for a few games a year. Till they started getting good and they never came up. I wouldn’t be surprised if hunt hired Andy Reid just so he didn’t have to do anything ever and never have to come up KC. He probably never thought in a millions they would be the next dynasty he just hire the guy who wins regular season games gave him control and thought he’d never see KC again I bet. I wouldn’t be surprised if they helicopter into the stadium too from the airport! They don’t wanna be out there with the public the common folk!! They even wear ear protection when they’re out in their stadium even when it’s half empty!! After all the last three generations didn’t earn a single dime the great great grandpa did all the work for them so why after 100 years be around common folk??? I’m partly joking, but partly not they are a holes all of what I said is possible with them and they do Think they’re better than everybody despite none of them working since no joke they’re great great grandpa!! True story Lamar, who technically founded the Chiefs but really it was just give the kid money to buy or start a team so to get him out of his dad‘s hair anyway Lamar he left his first family, wife, kids, everybody because what he though was a hot waitress gave him some attention. What a pos. He even tried to screw them out of everything!! He basically denied them denied ever being with them and being their father. It took his dad and grandpa to step in and say he’s an idiot forcing him to pay. I probably reminded him he was nothing just living off their money. Hit the sperm jackpot. Later on part of that abandoned family did move to Kansas City and unlike the rest of them and they do work for the Chiefs but not in the ownership role! Daddy said no there. Hell he probably didn’t even give him the job!! Apart from old old old, man hunt Lamar and his son well sons he likes are terrible humans. Somehow, the abandoned ones turned out OK. Probably cause they weren’t around Lamar! Yes thats the stories that have been shared about them and I’ve heard most if not all is true. Anyway that’s why hunt don’t want a new stadium they know the apartment will be the first thing to go especially if they took any public funding or tax break!! I’m guessing Lamar only did it back in the 1960s because fellow Texan and the original set up of Astrodome had a apartment for its owner. But once The Astrodome got huge public money for a remodel like 40 years ago, that was the first thing removed. Somehow, the Hunts got public money for a remodel 20 years ago and kept the apartment and they sucked back then so they’re not pushing their luck this time.

The opposing player in that stained glass window looks like the Patriots possibly.. However the Cardinals sounds good too..

The "Flying Elvis" logo you're thinking of was first introduced in 1993; their logo at the time Arrowhead was built would've been Pat Patriot (the minuteman hiking the football).

I think the player on the glass mural was a St.Louis Cardinal player. The symbolism could be that both teams represented the state of Missouri
with the Kansas City player being on the left representing the west side of the state where Kansas City is, and the Cardinal player being on the right representing St.Louis, which is on the eastern side of the state.
For years, Kansas City and the St.Louis Cardinals met each year in the preseason to play for the Governor's cup. After the Cardinals
left for Phoenix in 1988, the trophy was defunct until it was revived when the Rams moved to St.Louis in 1995.
      Just a theory.

@@TheLAGopher I think you might be right on. I'll add that the first game ever played at Arrowhead was a preseason game between the Chiefs and the then St. Louis Cardinals. I'm sure the fact that the first game ever held there was against their cross state rivals was NOT an accident.
